Horace Putnam Dansby Jr.
Horace Putnam Dansby Jr. lived a long and happy life. He passed from this life and into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 24, 2001. Horace, affectionately known to his family as “Pappy”, was born on July 9, 1910 in the small community of Steep Hollow, just east of Bryan. He was the youngest of three sons. His father, Horace Putnam Dansby Sr., and mother, Minnie Morgan Dansby (both deceased) were long time residents of Brazos County. His older brothers, Norman Dansby and Mit Dansby, also deceased, lived their entire lives in Bryan.
Horace was reared and educated in Bryan, spending much of his time on the family ranch. He attended Texas A&M College where he distinguished himself as quarterback on the Aggie football team and catcher on the baseball team. One of the highlights of his athletic career was hitting a ninth inning home run against the arch rival Texas Longhorns.
Horace married Gussie L. Odom, of Kurten, Texas, on February 9, 1933. Their four children, Ann Kelbly, Horace P. Dansby III, Norma Smith and Daniel M. Dansby were reared and educated in Bryan. Horace and Gussie currently have 14 grandchildren: John Kelbly III, Kay Kelbly, Carolyn Allen, Jeff Kelbly, Sandra Smith Singer, Diane Smith Adamez, Sharon Smith Pittman, Katherine Dansby Powell, Emily Dansby Kaler, Leah McAllister, Rachel Kruger, Jonathan Dansby, Ami Dansby and Jennifer Kelly. They have 22 great-grandchildren: Jacob Ellis McAllister, Joshua Thomas Kelly, Benjamin Samuel Kelly, Daniel Mark Kelly, Ashlyn Marie Kelbly, Erin Michelle Kelbly, Kalyn Nicole Kelbly, West Gregory Allen, Justin Dansby Allen, Kristin Marie Singer, Andrew Robert Singer, Courtney Michelle Adamez, Matthew Jeffrey Adamez, Jennifer Marie Adamez, Morgan Elizabeth Adamez, John Spencer (Jack) Burley, Melissa Renee Pittman, Bradley Allen Pittman, Patrick Dayton Powell, Margaret Gray Powell, Christopher Bradley Powell and Andrew Dansby Kaler.
During his career, Horace owned and operated a successful clothing store, W.S.D., in downtown Bryan until 1958. He served as President of Production Credit Association in Bryan until his retirement in 1975.
He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Bryan, where he served as deacon. He served as President of the Board of Directors of the Bryan Independent School District in the early 1960s. His strong interest in farming and agriculture placed him in leadership roles in FFA, 4-H and the Young Farmers Association. He owned and managed a successful cattle ranch until his retirement in 1990. From April 1, 1943 to April 1, 1984, he was a director of Producers Cooperative Association.
Horace’s main focus in life was serving his Lord and his family. He was a devoted husband and father who always made his family the highest priority. His daughter, Ann Kelbly currently manages the cattle ranch in Steep Hollow. His son, Horace P. Dansby III, M.D., is a practicing cardiologist and lives in Fort Myers, Florida, with his wife, Norma Kay. His second daughter, Norma Smith, lives in Bryan with her husband, Richard A. Smith. His youngest son, Daniel M. Dansby, M.D., is a practicing otolaryngologist and lives in Dallas, Texas, with his wife, Gray.
During his life, Horace was an inspiration to his family and friends through his positive and optimistic spirit. He was the spiritual leader of his family and delighted in the arrival of each new grandchild and great-grandchild.
His legacy of love and caring will live on through many generations of his family and friends. “Proverbs 13:22: A good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children.”
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 26, 2001 at the First Baptist Church in Bryan at 2 p.m. The pallbearers are: grandsons, John Kelbly III, Jeff Kelbly and Jonathan Dansby; and grandsons-in-law, Jeff Singer, Jeff Adamez, Steve Pittman, Greg Allen, Brad Powell, Jacob Kaler, John McAllister, Marc Kruger and Kevin Kelly. His three granddaughters-in-law are Elaine Kelbly, Kelly Kelbly and Amelia Dansby, and his step-grandson is Rick Mohaupt.

Services for Horace P. Dansby Jr., 90, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Bryan.
The Rev. Tim Owens of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Kurten Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.
Mr. Dansby died Saturday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.
He was born in the Steep Hollow community of Brazos County and was a retired rancher. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bryan.
Survivors include his wife, Gussie Dansby of Bryan; two sons, Dr. Horace P. Dansby III of Fort Myers, Fla., and Dr. Daniel M. Dansby of Dallas; two daughters, Norma Smith and Ann Kelbly, both of Bryan; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Georgia Frances Miller
March 18, 1912 — March 23, 2001
Services for Georgia Frances Miller, 89, of Bryan are set for 3 p.m. Sunday at Callaway-Jones Chapel in Bryan.
The Revs. Henry Stovall and Bob Owens will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Prairie Mound Cemetery in Argyle, Texas, in Denton County.
Viewing will be from noon until the time of the services Sunday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Miller died Friday at her home.
She was born in Argyle and lived in Bryan for 25 years. She was retired from the Food Service Department of Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Bryan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Johnnie W. Miller.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Yvonne and Bob Owens of Bryan and Elaine and Roger Weisser of Las Cruces, N.M.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Lessie A. Hollie Rouse
Dec. 4, 1918 — March 22, 2001
Services for Lessie A. Hollie Rouse, 82, of Bryan are set for noon Monday at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Bryan.
The Rev. John F. Foster Sr. of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Peoples Mortuary in Bryan.
Mrs. Rouse died Thursday in Brazos County.
She was a lifelong resident of Brazos County and was retired from Texas A&M University. She was a member of Galilee Baptist Church, where she was Mission I vice president and secretary, member of the senior choir and the food service committee. She sang with the Spiritual Echoes and was a member of the NAACP.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis “Kit” Rouse.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and James Chambers of Bryan; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Willie B. and Norma Rouse of Houston; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Rosa and Davis Edwards of San Angelo; a brother and sister-in-law, John E. Sr. and Johnnie M. Hollie of Houston; two stepsisters, Odessa Sneed of Houston and Mamie Young of Lubbock; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Hollie of College Station and Jessie M. Lights of Houston; and two grandchildren.

James ‘Jimmy’ Walton Payne

CENTERVILLE — Services for James “Jimmy” Walton Payne, 58, of the Old Bowling community near Marquez are set for 3 p.m. Sunday at the Clear Creek Baptist Church near Marquez.
The Revs. Ray Payne and Ray Grissett will officiate. Burial will be in the Concord Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.
Mr. Payne died Friday at his home.
He was born in Houston and was a longtime resident of Leon County. He was a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Paula and Bo Williams of the Old Bowling community; a nephew, two nieces, a great-nephew and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Charley V. Wootan
Charley V. Wootan, 74, of College Station died Saturday at his home. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Benjamin Aurand, rector, officiating. Burial will follow in College Station Cemetery.
Born on Oct. 9, 1926, in Junction, Wootan retired as director of the Texas Transportation Institute in 1993 and was named director emeritus by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents. He had served as director of the institute since 1976. He was also a professor of economics at Texas A&M University.
Wootan was a 1950 graduate of Texas A&M, with a bachelor of science degree in agricultural administration and agricultural economics. He received a master of science in agricultural economics in 1951 and a doctorate in the same discipline in 1965, both from Texas A&M.
Wootan held several major awards, given in recognition of his contributions in transportation research, his field of professional interest. He received the George S. Bartlett award from the Transportation Research Board, the American Association of Highways and Transportation and the American Road and Transportation Builders Association in 1988 for his outstanding contribution to highway progress. In 1981, he was recipient of the International Right of Way Association's Y.T. Lum Award for his contributions to that association.
In October 2000, Wootan received the Council of University Transportation Centers' award for distinguished contribution to university transportation education and research. He was a founding member of CUTC in 1985 and served as the organization's first president. He was again elected president in 1990. He also received the Luther DeBerry Award in 2000 for his contributions to the State of Texas in the field of transportation.
After he retired, Wootan pursued his interest in student loans as a member of the boards of the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corp. and the Greater East Texas Servicing Corp. He and Doxie, his wife of 50 years, also traveled extensively.
A U.S. Marine from 1944-46, Wootan served in the South Pacific and in China. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1950-56.
Wootan was a member and past president of the College Station Lions Club and Briarcrest Country Club. He was chairman of the College Station United Fund Drive in 1978 and of the College Station Planning and Zoning Commission in 1968-69. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
Wootan is survived by his wife Doxie of College Station; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard C. Wootan and Jean Wootan of Dallas; and a daughter and son-in-law, Debra A. Roberson and Gary T. Roberson of Menard. He had five grandchildren, Clint Charles Roberson, Thomas Ross Roberson and Steven Paul Roberson, all of Menard, and Mary Elizabeth Wootan and Samuel Patrick Wootan, both of Dallas. He is also survived by three sisters, Alberta Nelson and Mozelle Benton, both of Menard, and Yvonne Parker of Junction.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, College Station, or Hospice Brazos Valley.
Marvin Lueckemeyer
April 10, 1923 — March 25, 2001
BRENHAM — Services for Marvin Lueckemeyer, 77, of Brenham are set for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in the William Penn community.
The Rev. Matthew Jacobs will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery .
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.
Mr. Lueckemeyer died Sunday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.
He was born in the William Penn community and was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of William Penn. He retired in 1983 from the Brenham ISD. He served in the U.S. Army and received the American Theater Campaign medal and the World War II Victory medal.
Survivors include his wife, Rosa Lee Kohring Lueckemeyer of Brenham; two sons and daughters-in-law, Daryl and Mary Lueckemeyer of Brenham and Duane and Leah Lueckemeyer of Georgetown; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Paul Koska of DeSoto; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Edwin “Jim” and Thekla Lueckemeyer and Harold “Pete” and Johnnie Mae Lueckemeyer, all of Brenham; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Elsie and Walter Mertins and Anita Kohring, all of Brenham; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Harry A. Reue
Oct. 28, 1921 — March 24, 2001
BRENHAM — Services for Harry A. Reue, 79, of Brenham are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Lutheran Church in Brenham.
The Rev. Blair Lundborg will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.
Mr. Reue died Saturday in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham.
He was born in the Prairie Hill community. He retired after 42 years with Washington County State Bank. He was a member of the Germania Mutual Insurance Local Chapter 14 for 25 years, 17 years as vice president and eight years as president, and was past director of the Maifest Association and past treasurer of the Washington County Fair Association. He served in the U.S. Army and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Lehmann Reue of Brenham; two daughters and a son-in-law, Peggy and Jim Hooker of Plano and Marcella Bennett of Brenham; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Libby Reue of Coppell, Texas; a sister-in-law, Lonie Reue of Brenham; five grandchildren; a nephew; a niece; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Jean McIlhenny Speich
April 24, 1926 — March 25, 2001
NAVASOTA — Services for Jean McIlhenny Speich, 74, of Plantersville are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Navasota.
The Revs. Lacy Largent of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Ben Shawhan, retired, will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Lindley-Robertson-Holt Funeral Home in Navasota.
Mrs. Speich died Sunday at her home.
She was born in San Antonio and lived in Plantersville for 21 years. She was a homemaker and volunteer. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where she was a member of the Episcopal Church Women. She was also a member of the Navasota Garden Club and the Music Study Club of Navasota.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph J. Speich Sr. of Plantersville; three sons and daughters-in-law, John Jr. and Carolyn Speich and Sam and Sandy Speich, all of Houston, and David and Tracy Speich of Springtown, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Carrie and Mike Childers of Houston; a brother-in-law, Don Brett of Dallas; a sister-in-law, Sara McIlhenny of San Antonio; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Ennis E. Williams
Sept. 24, 1909 — March 23, 2001
CENTERVILLE — Services for Ennis E. Williams, 91, of Centerville and formerly of Houston are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Walters Funeral Home Chapel in Centerville.
The Rev. Billy Bob Evans of Marquez Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery in Concord.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., and from 8 a.m. to the time of the services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Williams died Friday in a Centerville nursing home.
He was born in the Ephesus community near Jewett and lived most of his life in Houston. He retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in 1974 after 28 years of service.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Joan Fife and Nancy Barnes.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Williams of the Robbins community in Leon County; two sons, Larry D. Williams of Sargent, Texas, and John M. Williams of Houston; two daughters, Jean Isbell of the Robbins community and Dorothy Garcia of Houston; three sisters, Irene Graham and Frances Crenshaw, both of Houston, and Jewel Simon of Casper, Wyo.; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
