Aubrey Leveridge

Aubrey Thomas Leveridge Jr. was born on June 21, 1918, in East Bernard, in a small house across from the bank that was founded by his grandfather, John Grant Leveridge. His grandfather, who had also started the first school in East Bernard, lived a half block away, instilling the importance of education and hard work to the young Leveridge. He attended elementary school in East Bernard and high school in Wharton. After high school, he was accepted to Kemper military Academy from 1935 to 1936 in Booneville, Mo. Upon completion of his studies, he entered the University of Texas in Austin from 1937 to 1940, receiving his bachelor’s degree. Fully believing in service to his fellow man, he accepted a commission in the United States Army Air Corps, and was accepted to flight school. While he was stationed at Randolph Air Station in San Antonio, he received the call for all soldiers to return to the base, nearly 63 years ago this month, on Dec. 7, 1941, as the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He served three years on the island of Saipan with the B-29 Group that bombed Japan. When he returned home he entered the University of Texas Law School. There he met his wife, the former Mary Ann Kolle of Houston, and they were married on July 19, 1947. They moved to Houston, where Mr. Leveridge practiced law for several years, and they began their family. In January of 1954 they built a home and moved to East Bernard. Mr. Leveridge built his law practice in the building where his father, grandfather and uncle, W.C. Leveridge, had operated a general merchandise store. He practiced law in the same building for more than 55 years, and was a cornerstone to the whole community. In 1958 he was introduced to the United States Supreme Court to practice law by the senior senator from Texas. He was president of the Wharton County Bar Association, the East Bernard Lions Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the American Legion, served several terms on the East Bernard School Board over his lifetime, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in East Bernard. In recent years, as one after another of his grandchildren graduated from A&M University, he became an ardent fan of that school and of its philosophy of soldier, statesman, and knightly gentleman. He told his children to always enjoy their life’s work, and that it should always provide a service to the people. “Be where you should be, as you should be, when you should be.” For a number of years his children and family have lovingly referred to him as “Ol’ Goat” which simply stands for “Good Ol’ A.T.”. Mr. Leveridge was the most honest person you could find; his word was as good as any contract. He was a truly genuine person. He was a man who would never quit. He was proud to be a Texan, a farmer and a rancher.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Leveridge, of East Bernard; daughters, Linda Carden and husband, Butch, of Stockdale; Mary Hodges and husband, Bascom, of East Bernard; sons, Thomas Leveridge and wife, Tinney, of Schertz; Mike Leveridge and wife, Gloria, of Brazoria; daughter, Frances Gorman and husband, Phil, of Sealy; grandchildren, Katie Carden Summers, Virginia Carden Waymer, Joe Leveridge, Mary Alice Leveridge, Henry Leveridge, Christine Zieschang, Aubrey Leveridge IV, Capt.
