Vivian Faulkner

Funeral services for Vivian Faulker, 69, of Houston, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. L.C. Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Faulkner died Aug. 13, 2000, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Houston. She was born Nov. 28, 1930, in Wharton to James and Mable Branch Edwards Sr.

Survivors include daughter, Linda Edwards Allen of Houston; brothers, Herman Edwards, Edwin Edwards and Johnny Edwards, all of Seattle, Wash., James Edwards and Cleveland Edwards, both of Texas City, Robert Edwards of Dallas and Larry Edwards of Wharton; sisters, Thelma Jackson of Seattle, Wash., and Millie Goodson of Houston; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home.

Jeannine Hager

Memorial services for Jeannine Dale Hager, 71, of Milford, Con., will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Jan Putnam officiating. Private Graveside services will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.

A former Wharton resident, Ms. Hager died May 30, 2000, at her home from heart disease. She was born in Crockett to the late Sherman and Marguerite Hager and spent her early years in Wharton.

She played trombone in the Wharton High School Band and was noted for singing at local events. Ms. Hager attended Baylor University and earned her bachelor and master’s degrees from Chicago’s Conservatory of Music with a major in operatic singing. At Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, she held an appointment as associate professor and director of Performing Arts Theater. In her later years she lived in New York City and Connecticut working in marketing and sales. Ms. Hager served as an account executive for the Olsten Corporation, a national employment service based in Manhattan, vice-president of sales at Weatherby Associates, a Norwalk, Con., executive search firm.

Survivors include brother, Beau James of New York City. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Earl Evans Hager, on June 25, 1999.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Wharton County Historical Museum, P.O. Box 349, Wharton, Texas 77488; or First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Anna Laura Hudgins

Funeral services for Anna Laura Smith Hudgins, 64, of Wharton, were held Tuesday at Wharton Funeral Home with Gene Polvado officiating. Burial followed in Wharton Cemetery.

Mrs. Hudgins died Aug. 13, 2000, at Gulf Coast Medical Center after a sudden illness. She was born July 24, 1936, in New Orleans, La., to James Hunter and Laura B. Verret Smith.

She had been a resident of Wharton since 1966 and was Catholic by faith. Mrs. Hudgins married Thomas Eugene Hudgins on June 28, 1957, in Hungerford. She as a member and past president of the Philomathians. Mrs. Hudgins was active in the bridge club and wrote “Round About Town” articles for the Wharton Journal. She enjoyed designing floral arrangements and home interiors and always enjoyed helping others.

Survivors include husband, Thomas Hudgins of Wharton; daughter, Laura Anna Hudgins of San Antonio; son and daughter-in-law, Carlton and Dawn Hudgins of Wharton; grandsons, Dayne Hudgins and Taylor Hudgins, both of Wharton. She was preceded in death by one brother, James Odell Smith, in 1972.

Pallbearers were Dick Hudgins, Dr. Larry Caldwell, Henry Burger, Chuck Merritt, Darrell Zurn Mallen and Sheriff Jess Howell.

Honorary pallbearers were Ronald Caldwell, Sonny McCurry, Don Walker, Dale Hardeman, Delbert Brod, Jerry DiFranco and Dayne Hudgins.
In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorials to the East Wharton County Heart Association, P.O. Box 226, Hungerford, Texas 77448; or the American Diabetes Association, 2400 Augusta Drive, Suite 420, Houston, Texas 77057.

Leona Shavers

Funeral services for Leona “Lee” Shavers, 76, of East Bernard, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Little Zion Baptist Church in Kendleton with Rev. Richard Booker officiating. Burial will follow in Powell Point Cemetery in Kendleton.
Mrs. Shavers died Aug. 14, 2000, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born June 29, 1924, in Columbus to Green and Pearl Grace Johnson.

She married Jessie Shavers Sr. on May 30, 1942, and he preceded her in death on March 31, 1996. Mrs. Shavers was a homemaker and a Baptist by faith.

Survivors include daughters, Joyce Robinson of Beasley, Helen Shavers of East Bernard and Jessie Mae Clemmons of Los Angeles, Calif.; sons, Jessie Shavers Jr. and Robert “Bobby” Shavers, both of East Bernard, Henry Shavers of Houston, Willie Shavers of Needville and Charles Shavers of Austin; sister, Jennie Johnson of Kendleton; brother, Woodrow Johnson of Houston; 27 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Faye Shavers on June 2, 1960, and son, Charlie Shavers in 1950.

Pallbearers are Kenneth Shavers, Irby D. Robinson, Robert L. Shavers Jr., Jeffrey Shavers, Henry H. Shavers and Cedric Shavers.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Boone Funeral Home.

Marie Vanoski

Funeral services for Marie Vanoski, 91, of El Campo, were held Tuesday at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo with Rev. Richard Gould officiating. Burial followed in Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo.

Mrs. Vanoski died Aug. 13, 2000. She was born Aug. 19, 1908, in Czechoslovakia to the late Frank and Mary Mischerling Stehno.
She was a homemaker and lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church and Sons of Herman.

Survivors include son-in-law, W.D. McMillan of Wharton; sisters, Sophie Elias, Albina Baklik and Jo Kovar, all of El Campo; sister-in-law, Mary Stehno of Louise; granddaughters and spouse, Barbara Ann McMillan of Bellaire and Sherry Lynn Roberts Griffin and Lee of Horseshoe Bay; great-grandchildren, Anne L. Roberts of Austin and Ryan and Brent McMillan of Bellaire. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis F. Vanoski; daughter, Ann Marie McMillan; and brother, Charles Stehno.

Pallbearers were Anne Roberts, Ryan McMillan, Brent McMillan, Lee Griffin, Skip North, Bryan North and Mike Gregorakis.

Honorary pallbearers were nieces and nephews and entire staff of Czech Catholic Home in Hillje.

Herman Wendel

Funeral services for Herman Henry Wendel, 77, of Wharton, were held Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Vrana and Deacon Edward Wendel officiating. Burial followed in Wharton City Cemetery. Rosary services were led by Deacon Alvin Matthys Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Wendel died Aug. 11, 2000, in Houston. He was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Hillje to Otto H. and Emilie Schindler Wendel.

He was a graduate of Louise High School. Mr. Wendel was a resident of Wharton for more than 60 years and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He married Ruth May Billy on Aug. 17, 1957, in Wharton and she preceded him in death on Oct. 20, 1983. Mr. Wendel was a former manager of Sansing’s West End Superette and most recently worked as a route salesman for Allison Distributing until his retirement in 1981. He was a former member of the Sons of Herman and Wharton Chapter of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include step-son and step-daughter-in-law, Robert and Loretta Brandon of Belleville, Mich.; sister, Martha Janik Moritz of Alvin; brother, Herbert Wendel of Bay City; step-grandson, step-great-granddaughter, numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by sisters, Trudy Moritz and Elsie Drescher.
Pallbearers were Gary Moritz, David Leazar, Daniel Janik Jr., Dale Janik, Conrad Janus and Steve Brandon.

Clara Kurtz

Graveside services for Clara Anne Kurtz, 87, of San Antonio and former longtime resident of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Wharton City Cemetery with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. A wake service was held Tuesday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kurtz died Oct. 1, 2000, in a San Antonio hospital after an extended illness. She was born in Wharton County on Dec. 24, 1912, to Joseph and Emma Louisa Miller Coward.

She had been a lifelong resident of Wharton County before moving to San Antonio in 1990. Mrs. Kurtz was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton and a member of its Catholic Daughters of the Americas organization and former member of the church’s Altar Society. She married Theodore Edgar “Dutch” Kurtz on Jan. 3, 1940, in Wharton and he preceded her in death on Oct. 6, 1984. Mrs. Kurtz was also preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include daughter, Sunni Putnam and son-in-law, Glenn Ross, of San Antonio; sisters, Florence Korenek of Galveston and Lorraine Kelley of Texas City; grandchildren, Larry W. Putnam II and Kristina Putnam; great-grandchildren, Niccole Putnam, Shelby Lee-Anne Putnam and Jaden Putnam Smith.

Pallbearers are Larry Putnam II, Key-Wayne Christensen, Brad Baker, James Bruce, Keith DeFehr and Sonny Kurtz.
Honorary pallbearers are Frank Allen Kurtz, Roy Kurtz and Dr. Ron Michelina.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Dan Perry

Funeral services for Dan Corman Perry, 64, of Hungerford, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Perry died Oct. 2, 2000, in Wharton after an extended illness.

Louie Wishert
Memorial services for Louie William Wishert Sr., 81, of Yakima, Wash., and former resident of Wharton County, were held Friday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Mack Mathis officiating. Funeral services will be held Dec. 8, 2000, at the Keith & Keith Funeral Home in Yakima, Wash. Burial will follow in West Hills Memorial Park Cemetery in Yakima, Wash.

Mr. Wishert died Nov. 29, 2000, in a Pasadena hospital due to a heart attack. He was born in Colorado County Oct. 17, 1919, to Willie Max and Hattie Louise Weid Wishert Sr.

He was a veteran of World War ll having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Wishert married Rutha Alene Wilson on March 2, 1944, in Tyler and she preceded him in death on March 9, 1997. He moved to Washington in 1946.

Mr. Wishert worked as a construction superintendent for J.A. Jones Construction Company at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation until his retirement in 1986. He was also a member of the Laborers International Union of North America, Local No. 348, and received his 45-year membership pin in 1998. Mr. Wishert was a member of the Apple Valley Saddle Club, Over the Hill Gang, The Sunshine R.V. Club, J.A. Jones Old Timers Group, the VFW and the American Legion. He was also a Boy Scout leader for many years.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Lynda and Craig Trudeau of Wapato, Wash., and Cheryl and Patrick Culwell of Kennewick, Wash.; sons and daughters-in-law, Louie and Jackie Wishert Jr. of Yakima, Wash., and Ron and Terri Wishert of Maple Valley, Wash.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene Giese of Brazoria, Esther and Charles Fitzgerald of Lane City, Ethel and Charles Nelson of Palestine, Hattie Jo and Edward O’Briant of League City, and Dorothy and Joe Ziober of Lane City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Pete and Bonnie Wishert of Wharton and J.J. “Bubba” and Retha Wishert of Brazoria and Charlottie Wishert of Boling; 10 granddaughters and eight great-grandchildren; and very special friend, Mary Shak of Pasadena. He was preceded in death by a sister, Adele Giese, and three brothers, Robert Wishert, George Buddy Wishert and Willie Wishert Jr.

In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorials to the American Heart Association or a charity of personal choice.
