Lawrence Barnhill

Funeral services for Lawrence Everet Barnhill, 80, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, at Iago Federated Church with Mickey Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Barnhill died March 28, 2001, in Wharton after an extended illness. He was born July 2, 1920, in Pittsburgh County, Okla., to Alva Edwin Barnhill and Voisie Donaldson.

He moved to Wharton in 1936 and was a 1938 graduate of Boling High School. Mr. Barnhill married Joyce Marie Blackwell on Dec. 20, 1941, in Wharton. He was Baptist by faith and a member of Iago Federated Church. Mr. Barnhill served as a member of the church board and Sunday School superintendent for many years. He was a farmer and rancher having retired in 1998. Mr. Barnhill was a former member of the Wharton County Farm Bureau and was named most outstanding farmer for Wharton County by the Wharton Chamber of Commerce in 1961.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Barnhill of Wharton; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmie Edwin and Gentra Barnhill of Wharton; sister, Wilma Fay Barnhill King of Wharton; grandchildren, William Edwin “Bill” Barnhill, Laure Barnhill Harrell and Emily Jane Barnhill. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Tommy George Barnhill in June of 1969; and a brother, Herbert Claude Barnhill.

Pallbearers are Devoy Shaw, John Donaldson, Gerald Donaldson, David Looper, Wayne Guess and Tommy Chapman.
Honorary pallbearers are all of his friends and neighbors, members of the Men’s Bible Study Class of Iago Federated Church, Valerio Llanes, Steven Salazar, Ray Cordero, Kris Gertson and Jarrod Harrell.
If desiring, memorials may be made to Iago Federated Church, Rt. 1, Box 208, Boling, Texas 77420.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Clayton Britton

Cremation was held Tuesday for Clayton Wilburn Britton, 72, of Wharton.
Mr. Britton died March 26, 2001, at his residence after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 31, 1928, in Eldridge to Benson and Ellen Pickett Britton.
He was a 40-year resident of Wharton. Mr. Britton was a disabled veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired carpenter.

Survivors include daughter, Carol Ann Young of California; son, Christopher C. Britton of California; sister, Clara Talafuse of Wharton; and brother, Lloyd Britton of Wharton. He was preceded in death by a son, Mike Britton; two sisters, Lucille Tedder and Betty Briggs; and by a brother, Norbert Britton.

Joe Koenig

Funeral services for Joseph Earnest “Joe” Koenig Jr., 87, of Wharton, were held Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul Kersten officiating. Burial followed in the Swedish Lutheran Cemetery in El Campo.
Mr. Koenig died March 26, 2001, in a Wharton nursing home after a brief illness. He was born Jan. 2, 1914, in El Campo to Joseph E. and Martha Schulz Koenig Sr.

He had been a resident of Wharton since 1955 and was a former resident of Bay City. Mr. Koenig was one of the founding members of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Bay City. He married Dagmar Viola Carlsen on Feb. 15, 1940, in El Campo and she preceded him in death on Sept. 10, 1998.
Mr. Koenig was also preceded in death by two sons, Ronald J. Koenig and Charles Lee Koenig; a grandson, Christopher Koenig; and four brothers. He was founder and owner of Koenig Welding Service in Wharton until his retirement in 1972. After his retirement, he was the owner and operator of a mobile home park in El Campo. Mr. Koenig was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and member of Bay City Masonic Lodge. He was a former member of Good Sams Camping Club, having served in various offices, the Golden Gulf Coast Square Dancers and the Men’s Club of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Mr. Koenig was active with the Senior Citizens Center at Wharton County Junior College.

Survivors include son and daughters-in-law, Gary and Carol Koenig and Delores Koenig, all of Wharton; sisters and brother-in-law, Alma Rinehart of Lake Jackson and Annie and Oscar Galow of El Campo; sisters-in-law, Mattie Koenig of San Angelo and Nannie Koenig of Huntsville, Ala.; grandchildren, Ron Koenig, Greg Koenig, Lacy Koenig and Amy Koenig; great-grandchildren, Hailee Koenig and Grant Koenig.
Pallbearers were Jerald Coates, Bill Fisher, Donald Galow, Eric Hanys, Bobby Koenig, Jerry Marek, Jack Shiplette and Craig Ullmann.

Jerald Coates

Following cremation, memorial services for Jerald D. Coates, 67, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Monday, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wharton with Rev. Laura Olsen officiating.

Mr. Coates died Feb. 4, 2005, in a Houston hospital following an extended illness. He was born on March 11, 1937, in Wills Point, the son of the late Nathan Lemuel Coates and Mary Frances Lovell Coates.

He graduated from Taft High School in 1955 and then attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. Mr. Coates married Betty Striedel on Jan. 18, 1963, in Alice. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Coates worked in retail sales for many years and managed Diamond S Restaurant in Wharton until his retirement in 1999. He was currently serving as records director for Thrivent Financial. Mr. Coates was a very active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Coates of Wharton; daughter, Melissa Coates of Wharton; son, Jerald Drayson Coates of Egypt; sister, Sue Mayfield of Sinton; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by three brothers, Harold Coates, L.L. Coates and Bobby Coates.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to St. Paul Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 325 N. East Ave., Wharton, TX 77488.

Marie Melnar

Marie Ann Mariner Melnar, age 63 of Wharton, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born on Dec. 10, 1941, in Wharton, the daughter of Byron E. Mariner and the late Kittie Zelle Strickland Mariner.

Mrs. Melnar had been a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford. She married Marcus E. Melnar on Dec. 26, 1960, in Wharton. Mrs. Melnar was a graduate of Wharton High School and Wharton County Junior College. She worked as an LVN for Caney Valley Memorial Hospital and Gulf Coast Medical Center. Mrs. Melnar later worked as a home health nurse for Transmed until her retirement in 1995. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters and was a former girls softball manager and served as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader.

A rosary was recited at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. today, Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include her husband, Marcus E. Melnar of Wharton; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Richard Potter of Boling; son and daughter-in-law Garland Michael and Colette Melnar of Wharton; father and step-mother, Byron and Ruth Mariner of Durant, Okla.; brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Kathy Mariner of Dallas; and grandchildren, Kyle Marcus Clark, Heather Marie Melnar and Hollie Michelle Melnar.

Pallbearers were Trent Barker, Doyle Carter, Donald Tuttle, Donald Schunka, Marshall Melnar, Greg Willey and Jeff Willey.

Honorary Pallbearers were Kyle Clark, Keith Dornak, Charlie Boatwright, Wilbur Schunka, Gene Karasek, Junior Bennetsen, John Melnar, Leland Treybig and Glenn Ray Willey.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the American Cancer Society, 204 Second Street, Wharton, TX 77488; or Hospice Support Care, 1102 N. Mechanic, Suite B., El Campo, TX 77437.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Anita Martinez

Funeral services for Anita G. Martinez, 83, of Boling, were held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Rene Prunida officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Martinez died March 27, 2001, in a Pasadena nursing home after an extended illness. She was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Orange to Trinidad and Domitila Rodriguez Gonzales.
She was a 29-year resident of Boling and former resident of Newgulf. Mrs. Martinez was a homemaker and enjoyed working in her garden. She married Jose A. Martinez on Nov. 12, 1937, in Newgulf an he preceded her in death in June of 1982. Mrs. Martinez was a member of the Boling Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include daughters, Consuelo Garcia of Houston, Olga Estrada of Bay City, Aurora Buentello of Houston and Jean Martinez of Houston; son, Jesse Martinez of Sugar Land, Frank Martinez of San Bernadino, Calif., and Mario Martinez of Webster; sister, Guadalupe Rodriguez of Houston; 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Guadalupe Martinez; a sister, Aurora Gonzales; and by one brother, Felix Gonzales.
Pallbearers were John David Buentello, Peter Estrada, Kevin Martinez, Charlie Campos, Ric Campos, Eli Estrada, Frank Martinez, Ramon Castillo and Joseph Hinojosa.

Pablo Garcia
Funeral services for Pablo Pedro Garcia, 77, of Wharton, were held Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Garcia died Aug. 7, 2001, in Wharton after an extended illness. He was born July 25, 1924, in Mercedes to Antonio and Maria Trinidad Benavidez Garcia.
He was a 60-year resident of Wharton and member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Mr. Garcia married Candelaria Garcia in 1941 in Wharton and she preceded him in death on Jan. 16, 1998. He worked construction for various companies and most recently was employed as a custodian for Wharton Manor Nursing Home until his retirement in 1987.
Survivors include daughter, Lula Diaz of Wharton; son, Martin Garcia Sr. of Wharton; brothers, George Garcia of Rosenberg and Alvino Garcia of Edna; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Martin Garcia Jr., Rosendo Garcia, Manuel Garcia, Thomas Martinez, Antonio Luna and George Garcia Jr.

Elaine Talas
Funeral services for Elaine Faye Talas, 48, East Bernard, were held Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with Rev. Don Ruppert officiating. Burial followed in Holy Cross Cemetery in East Bernard. Rosary services were held Thursday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard.
Mrs. Talas died Aug. 8, 2001, at her residence after an extended illness. She was born Aug. 21, 1952, in East Bernard to Charles and Billie Kasmir Pelzel.
She was a lifelong resident of East Bernard and member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. Mrs. Talas married Allen Talas on Sept. 30, 1978, in East Bernard. She worked as a receptionist at Union State Bank for 11 years and as a secretary for East Bernard Independent School District for the past 10 years.
Survivors include husband, Allen Talas of East Bernard; mother, Billie Harlan of Temple; father, Charles Pelzel of East Bernard; grandmother, Sophie Kasmir of Needville; sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and Phil Koester of Sugar Land; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Chad Eckelberg, Jimmy Talas, Joey Talas, Ryan Eckelberg, Jason Talas and John Talas.
Honorary pallbearers were Anton Dybala, Louis Konarik, Syl Marik, Louis Stolar, Edward Talas Jr., James Talas, Joe Talas Jr., Kenneth Talas, Ronald Wicke, Steve Naiser, Charles Verm and Gary Eckelberg.
If desiring, memorials may be made to Hospice Support Care, 1102 N. Mechanic, El Campo, Texas 77437; American Cancer Society, 204 2nd Street, Wharton, Texas 77488; or Holy Cross Catholic Church, P.O. Box 280, East Bernard, Texas 77435.

Isabel Gallegos
Funeral services for Isabel Gallegos, 60, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Gallegos died Dec. 10, 2001, in Wharton.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Willie Heard
Funeral services for Willie “Dennis” Heard Jr., 53, of New Braunfels, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Tree of Life Church. Burial will follow at Comal Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. Thursday until noon Friday at Zoeller Funeral Home in New Braunfels.
Mr. Heard died Dec. 3, 2001, in New Braunfels. He was born March 23, 1948, in Wharton.
He moved to New Braunfels and graduated from New Braunfels High School and later attended St. Phillip’s Junior College and Texas A&M School for electrical engineering.
Survivors include wife, Rena Heard of New Braunfels; mother, Lillian Heard of New Braunfels; children and spouses, Shaurice “Bookie” and Camelia Heard of New Braunfels, Jermaine and Irma Heard of New Braunfels, La Toya and Levii Shocklee of Patuxent River, Md., and Samantha Hadlock of New Braunfels; sister, Callie Simon of New Braunfels; five grandchildren, one nephew and two nieces.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Zoeller Funeral Home in New Braunfels.
