Cindy Waligura
Funeral services for Cindy Waligura, 42, of Garwood, were held April 20, 2002, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nada with Rev. Joseph Koebel officiating. Burial followed at Lehrer Memorial Cemetery near Garwood. Rosary services were held April 19 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Mrs. Waligura died April 16, 2002. She was born Aug. 18, 1959, in El Campo to Frank and Ann Tymel Hallinger of El Campo.
She was a homemaker and member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nada. Mrs. Waligura was a member of the Nada Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Survivors include husband, Mark Waligura of Garwood; daughter, Holly Waligura of Huntsville; sisters, Cheryl Roach and Becky Hardin, both of El Campo; and brother, Frank Hallinger Jr. of El Campo.
A memorial fund in memory of Cindy Waligura has been established at First State Bank, P.O. Box 967, El Campo, Texas 77437.

Randy Welch
Randy Carl Welch, 48, of Wharton, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, in a Houston hospital following an extended illness. He was born on July 18, 1953, in Wharton, the son of Dan Carl and Doris Helen Canada Welch.
Mr. Welch was a graduate of Boling High School and attended Wharton County Junior College. He was married to Jeanne Spencer. Mr. Welch has been a resident of Wharton since 1999 and was a former resident of California. He was a telemarketer until his retirement. He was Baptist by faith. Mr. Welch was preceded in death by his mother in 1985.
Private funeral services were held with cremation and interment following at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
Survivors include wife, Jeanne Welch of Wharton; step-sons, Adam Rumpf and fiancée Nicole Arnett and Wes Patten, both of Wharton; father and step-mother, Don and Fannie Merle Welch of Wharton; brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Lisa Welch of Richmond; niece, Leslie Welch, and nephew, Andrew Welch both of Richmond; two step-sisters and two step-brothers also survive.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to: Methodist Hospital Foundation Liver Transplant Program Fund, 6565 Fannin, M.S. STB1-30, Houston, Texas 77030.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Mary Badger
Funeral services for Mary Lou Badger, 75, of East Bernard, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg with a graveside service held at 3 p.m. Friday at South Park Cemetery in Pearland with Rev. Don Ruppert and Rev. Michael Holcombe officiating the services. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg.
Mrs. Badger died June 16, 2002, at her residence. She was born Feb. 15, 1927, in Youngstown, Ohio, to William Briggs Lewis and Anne Shalkey Lewis. She came to Houston on the recommendation of her war time boss and was a secretary for Humble Pipeline, volunteered for the TIRR and was a secretary for the Graduate Psychology Department at the University of Houston. Mrs.Badger was a member of the PhT., “Putting Hubby Through,” Group at Rice University in 1963. She helped establish the Houston Chapter of the Spina Bifida Association and the Gulf Coast Welsh Pony Association of Texas. Mrs. Badger was a life member of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society of America. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her brother, William B. Lewis Jr.; and daughter, Susan Elaine Chester.
Survivors include her husband, Algernon Sidney Badger, Ph.D., of East Bernard; daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth Anne Badger and Lansing Pugh of Austin, Margaret and James E. Blackert, DVM, of East Bernard and Lynn Chester of Richmond; son, John Algernon Badger of Austin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Elaine Lewis of Warrin, Mich., and Richard and Marie Lewis of Alpena, Mich.; and six grandchildren.
If desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Welsh Pony and Cob Foundation.

Allen Border
Allen Border, age 64, of Magnet, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, in a Wharton hospital following a sudden illness. He was born on Dec. 10, 1937, in Pitcairn, Pa., the son of the late Harry Border and Zena Hyett Border.
He was a 1956 graduate of Pitcairn High School and attended the University of Miami. Mr. Border was a veteran, having served in the U. S. Navy. He married Eva Jo Long on Feb. 16, 1985 in Wharton. Mr. Border was employed in the transportation department of Timpte Inc., in Colorado for numerous years and be retired in 1995. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Bay City. Mr. Border enjoyed bowling, fishing, camping and caring for his lawn.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Chester Sassman officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call for visitation from 3-7 p.m. today, Wednesday, June 19, at Wharton Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Jo Border of Magnet; daughters and son-in-law, Kathy Jane Border of Pitcairn, Pa., and Valorie and Rick Aho of Thornton, Colo.; sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Kathy Border Jr. of North Huntington, Pa., Brian Border of Pitcairn, Pa., and Rick and Kathy Clark of Magnet; brother, Fred Border of Pitcairn, Pa.; grandchildren, Tina Cleveland, Jessica Clark, Marvin Clark, Wesley Wilson, Danyelle Wilson, Angela Aho, Shayne Aho, Kimberley Border, Michael Border and Katiln Border; and great-grandchildren, Dakota Cleveland, Samantha Wilkerson and Thomas Wilkerson.
Pallbearers are Marvin Clark, Wesley Wilson, Jack Vasquez, David Jansky, Sandy Szienbach and Sheldon Wilson.

Pearlie Brown
Funeral services for Pearlie Mae Green Brown, 60, of Wharton will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. R. Glover officiating. Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery in Kendleton. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Friday at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.
Mrs. Brown died June 17, 2002, at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. She was born in Kendleton June 28, 1941, to Louis Hicks and Lola Bell Green.
Survivors include husband, Johnny Brown of Wharton; sons, Larseen Thompson Jr., Darell Waddell and Eric Waddell, all of Wharton, Terry Joe Green, Robert Lee Brown, both of Houston; daughters, Mildred Scarlett, Patrice Greer, both of Wharton, and Alfreda Hicks of Rosenberg; brothers, John Green Sr. of Kendleton and Louis Hill Jr. of Austin; sisters, Lillie Bell Green of Wharton and Myrtle Shaw of Houston; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Clyde Edwards
Funeral services for Clyde Edwards, 78, of Rosenberg, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in El Campo with Rev. R. Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in El Campo Community Cemetery.
Mr. Edwards died June 17, 2002, at Rosenberg Health & Rehab Center. He was born June 18, 1923, in Morales to Amial Edwards and Sarah Barnes.
He married Lorenza Long Edwards. Mr. Edwards was a truck driver and Baptist by faith.
Survivors include wife, Lorenza Long Edwards; daughters, Bobbie Williams, Jo Anne Edwards, Ruby Edwards and Jurlene Thornton; sisters, Dorothy Whitehead and Lucille Hawkins; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter, Helaire; son, Clyde Edwards Jr.; sisters, Grace Williams and Jurlene Edwards; and brother, Curtis Edwards.

Maurice Gage
Funeral services for Maurice Thomas Gage, 67, of Oden, Ark., and formerly of Chicota, were held Tuesday at Gene Roden’s Sons Funeral Home in Paris with Rev. Charles Fisher officiating. Burial followed in Forest Cemetery.
Mr. Gage died June 15, 2002, in Oden, Ark. He was born Sept. 12, 1934, in Upshur County to Odell and Ellen Beatrice Kelly Gage.
He married Dixie M. Cass Gage on June 16, 1995. Mr. Gage was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a retired director of Field Operations for Dover Elevator Company.
Survivors include wife, Dixie M. Cass Gage; daughters, Sherry Ann Kielman and Marsha Sherryl LaPoma, both of Wharton; son, Maurice Jerryl Gage of Wharton and Perry Lynn Gage of Yellville, Ark. ; and sister, Patsy McPeek of Gilmer; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Melvin Smith
Graveside services for Melvin Smith, 38, of Wharton and formerly of El Campo, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Garden of Memories Cemetery Arbor in El Campo. Visitation will begin Friday at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo.
Mr. Smith died June 13, 2002. He was born Nov. 28, 1963, in Marshall to Hubert and Maggie Cornett Smith of Fouke, Ark.
He was a truck driver for B&B Services.
Survivors include parents, Hubert and Maggie Cornett Smith of Fouke, Ark.; daughter, Shayla Smith of El Campo; sisters, Cathy Baird of Big Sandy, Charlotte Genby of Hallsville and Debbie Johnson of Hawkins; and brother, Tim Smith of Texarkana, Ark.
If desiring, memorials may be made to the Shayla Smith Scholarship Fund.

Gertrude Ford
Funeral services for Gertrude “Dot’O” Ford, 75, of Wharton, were held Monday at New Mount Olive Baptist Church in Mackay with Rev. Jimmie Wright officiating and Elder Eric Mosley delivering the eulogy. Burial followed in Wharton City Cemetery.
Mrs. Ford died Aug. 28, 2002, at Wharton Manor Nursing Home. She was born Sept. 20, 1926, in Iago to Will and Gertrude Hendon Allen.
She was a lifelong resident of Wharton County and married Nathaniel Ford. He preceded her in death on June 21, 1993. Mrs. Ford was a housewife.
Survivors include son, Michael D. Allen of Wharton; sisters, Annie Peugh, Pearline Allen, Ruth Oliver and Hazel Shanklin, all of Houston; and four grandchildren.

Adele Garner
Adele Marie Garner, age 79, of Wharton, died Sunday Sept. 1, 2002, in Wharton. She was born on Feb. 18, 1923, in Wallis, the daughter of the late Anton Sliva and Christine Kucera Sliva.
Mrs. Garner was a lifelong resident of Wharton County, having lived for 60 years in Lane City before moving to Wharton in October of 2000. She married Clay Garner Sr. on Dec. 8, 1945, in Wharton. He preceded her in death on Feb. 11, 1973. Mrs. Garner was employed for many years as a cosmetic salesperson for various pharmacies including Vineyard Drug, Wharton Drug and Wilson Drug. Most recently she worked as a secretary for Perma Pom Inc. in Lane City until her retirement in 1996. She was Methodist by faith.
Graveside services and interment were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday Sept. 3, 2002, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Chris Voulgaris of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Clay and Linda Garner of El Campo and Dale and Nancy Garner of Victoria; sisters, Elsie Valenta of Lane City, Sidonia Tomaczak of Lane City, Mildred McCart of Wharton and Marie Manofsky of Rockport; brother, Robert “Bob” Sliva of Wharton; grandchildren, Crystal Burditt and husband, Jason, Micah Clay Voulgaris and Michael Garner, three step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Tony and Sylvester Sliva.
Honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren.

Gloria Keprta
Funeral services for Gloria L. Keprta, 71, of Brenham, formerly of East Bernard, will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in East Bernard with Rev. Michael Holcomb officiating. Visitation will begin prior to the service at noon. Burial will be in the United Methodist Cemetery in East Bernard,
Mrs. Keprta is survived by her loving husband, George Keprta of Brenham; son and daughter-in-law, Kelly and Sandy Keprta of Plano; daughter, Karen Kaye Markette of Austin; brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Jo Ann Tumlinson of Sinton; and five grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 421 Pietzsch Street, East Bernard, Texas 77435 or to a charity of personal choice.

Idabeth McFarlane
Graveside services and interment for Idabeth McFarlane were held Tuesday at Morton Cemetery in Richmond.
Miss McFarlane passed away in Houston on Aug. 29, 2002. She was born in Richmond on Sept. 28, 1914, the daughter of Ida Culshaw and Earl McFarlane, sister of Bessie Lee McFarlane Bryant and half-sister of Lynn McFarlane.
She graduated from Richmond High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Texas Women’s College in Denton. Miss McFarlane later received a graduate degree in medical laboratory sciences at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston. She subsequently was employed by the Rugeley/Blasingame Clinic in Wharton, where she resided until she became ill in 1997.

Floyd Sanford
“When I come to the end of the day and the sun has set for me, I want no ties in a gloom-filled room, why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little while, but not too long, and not with your head bowed low. Remember the love we once shared, miss me but let me go.”
Our husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Floyd L. “Joe” Sanford Sr. entered into Eternal Rest the 30th day of August, 2002. The family will come together to give thanks for his life on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in Spanish Camp. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home.
He leaves in God’s care his loving wife, Betty Sanford; children, Mattie Fay, Floyd Jr. and Angela Diane; grandchildren, Clifton, Telly, Falona and Jerimee; seven great-grandchildren; one brother and sisters-in-law, Alex and Oscar Mae Sanford, Eula Callis, Geraldine Sanford, Verma Maxwell and many devoted nieces and nephews.

E.H. “Bob” Wozniak
E.H. “Bob” Wozniak, 87, well-loved by family and friends, died Sunday, Sept. 1, at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton after fighting a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Father Joe Vrana officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Wozniak was born Feb. 9, 1915, in Bremond, the son of the late Joseph William and Mary Andreweski Wozniak. He graduated from Reagan High School in Houston and was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II. Mr. Wozniak married Mary Lou Moore on Jan. 7, 1939 in Wharton. He worked for Weingarten’s and was a salesman for Reynolds Tobacco Company prior to moving to Wharton in 1938. In 1946 he became a co-owner of Wharton Tractor Company with J.C. Meyer and F.I. Moore. He became sole owner in 1982 and later partners with his two sons Vance and Dick Wozniak. His contributions to Wharton will live on as a memorial of his active involvement and participation in the life of our community. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church since 1938, former member of the Knights of Columbus, charter member of the Wharton Rotary Club, former Wharton Independent School Board member, 1968 National Ford Tractor Dealer Council Member, instrumental in building both the Wharton Little League and Babe Ruth League ballparks, longtime manager and coach of the Wharton Little League and Babe Ruth League and an avid supporter of Wharton County Youth Fair and 4-H Clubs.
His awards include the FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer, 1988 Wharton County Youth Fair Agricultural Man of the Year, 1995 Wharton Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture Friend of Agriculture Award and in 2001, the first ever Wharton Little League Hall of Honor Coaches Award.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Wozniak of Wharton; daughter, Kathleen Wozniak of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Dick and Valorie Wozniak of Wharton and Vance and Nora Wozniak of El Campo; sister, Natalie Peck of Houston; and grandchildren, Lindsay Wozniak, Austin Wozniak, Karl Wozniak and Brenna Wozniak.
Pallbearers are Karl Wozniak, Austin Wozniak, Carter Moore, Jim Peck, Hank Meyer, Lou Barkholtz, Michael Powell and Tony Martin.
Honorary pallbearers are Sylvan Miori, Temple Koonce, Dan Sweeney, Bob Nilson, Willie Willbeck, Bobby Kleas, Lawrence Brock, John Reed, Pete Wilson and Willie Gooden.
