Nancy Alexander
Nancy Katherine Alexander, age 91, of Wharton, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, in a Houston hospital after an extended illness. She was born Feb. 11, 1911, in Lincoln County, Ken., the daughter of the late John Russell and Maggie Buchanan Russell.
Mrs. Alexander was a homemaker, former resident of Stanford, Ken., and had resided in Wharton for the last 57 years. She married Charles Earl Alexander in 1945 in Wharton and was preceded in death by him on Jan. 30, 1980. She was Baptist by faith.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 3, 2002, at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Bill McLeod officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Elaine Alexander of Wharton; sister, Ruth Kurtz of Glendora, Calif.; grandchildren, Russell and Kathy Alexander, Stephen and Debbie Alexander; great-grandchildren, Travis, Jacob, Grace, Jason and Dylan Alexander.
Pallbearers were Stephen Alexander, Russell Alexander, John Alexander, Nathan Alexander, Charles Hahn and William Latham.

Christopher Campos
Funeral services for Christopher Elias Campos, 30, of Boling, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, at Wharton Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Benjamin Harris
Funeral services for Benjamin Harris Jr., 70, of Texas City, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Williams officiating. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery in Wharton.
Mr. Harris died April 27, 2002, at Mainland Medical Center. He was born Jan. 15, 1932, in Wharton to Benjamin and Elizabeth Hogan Harris Sr.
He was a laborer and Baptist by faith.
Survivors include sister, Lula B. Grays of Wharton; and brother, Albert Harris of Houston.

Manuel Sanchez
Graveside services for Manuel Paul Sanchez, infant son of Manuel Sanchez and Christina Valdez, were held Friday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating.
Manuel died April 30, 2002, after a sudden illness. He was born April 10, 2002, in Wharton.
Survivors include parents, Manuel Sanchez and Christina Valdez, both of Hungerford; sister, Heaven Marie Valdez of Hungerford; brother, John Ray Jimenez Jr. of Hungerford; grandparents, Paul Sanchez and Rosemary and Felix Carmona, all of Hungerford; great-grandparents, Leroy Sanchez of Hungerford and Matilda and Daniel Partida of Wharton.

Bernice Coates
Funeral services for Bernice Delaune Coates, 84, of Pearland, were held Monday at St. James Major Church in New Orleans. Burial followed in St. Patrick Cemetery No. 3 in New Orleans.
Mrs. Coates died May 2, 2002. She was born Oct. 12, 1917, in Lockport, La., to Sidney and Josephine Claudet Delaune.
She moved to New Orleans, La., in 1933. Mrs. Coates married J. Henry Coates Jr. on April 20, 1940, and they resided in New Orleans, La., until their move to Pearland in 1991. She was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church in Pearland; Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, Lady Commander with Star; Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court of St. Helen. Mrs. Coates was a former member of St. James Major Catholic Church in New Orleans, La.; Gentilly Kaycee Ladies Auxiliary, past president; Sultanas of Alhambra, Darro Caravan, past Grand Sultana; Green Lawn Garden Guild, past president; St. Mary’s Dominican High School Mother’s Club, past president; St. James Major High Parents Club; St. James Major School Cooperative Club, past vice-president and board member; Council of Catholic School Cooperative Clubs, past board member.
She is survived by her husband, Henry; son, Patrick H. Coates Jr.; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen C. and Russell Joseph, Margaret Butler, Mary and Tobin Coates of Wharton and Colleen C. Milner; grandchildren, Patrick Coates Jr. and wife Bonnie, Michelle Reamer and husband Christopher, Janel Bernard and husband Sean, Michael Joseph and wife Sheri, Harold Joseph, Lucy Clifte and husband Terrence, Ronald Hartley and wife Nancy of Wharton, Jennifer Thomas and husband Scott, Sean Hartley, John Lucchese, David Lucchese; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother, Josie Nunez, Madeleine Landry, Myrtle Delaune and Alfred Delaune Sr.

Robert Clarke
Graveside memorial services for Robert Abel Clarke, 68, of Terlingua and formerly of El Campo, will be held at 4:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Wharton City Cemetery with military honors by El Campo American Legion Post No. 251.
Mr. Clarke died Oct. 28, 1998, in Newton, Kan. He was born May 15, 1930, in Wharton to the late F.W. and Cora Sanders Clarke.
He graduated from Schriener Institute in Kerrville and served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. Mr. Clarke married Melody Heidebrecht. He earned his bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees in educational administration and criminal justice from the University of Houston. Mr. Clarke was a Texas peace officer for 40 years in Harris and Brewster counties.
He taught school in Spring Branch, Houston and Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.
Mr. Clarke was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Texas Sheriffs’ Association, Texas Parks & Wildlife, Texas Game Wardens Association, Texas Peace Officers Association and other veteran and peace officers organizations.
After his death in 1998 his corneas were donated for transplantation and his body to the Kansas University Medical School for scientific study.
Survivors include wife, Melody Clarke; daughters, Kathryn Johnson of Austin and Kandi Brasseaux of Louisiana; sons, Robert Clarke Jr. of Austin, Roberto Askew Clarke of Argentina and Juan Askew Clarke of Argentina; brother, F.W. Clarke Jr. of El Campo; and one grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Elsie Clarke Lincecum Langdon, Amy Clarke Smith and Naomi Clarke Chappell; and brothers, F.W. Clarke Jr. and Horace Clarke.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of personal choice.

Velma Rainwater
Velma Louise Rainwater, age 83, of Wharton, died Thursday, May 9, 2002 in Wharton. She was born Oct. 18, 1918, in Henderson, the daughter of the late Sam and Lonie Fears Houston.
Mrs. Rainwater, a devoted Christian mother, graduated from Henderson High School in 1935. She married Howard Berry Rainwater on June 27, 1937, in Henderson. He preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 1992. She was employed as a receptionist at Rugeley-Blasingame Clinic for 22 years. She also helped her husband manage Duke & Ayers prior to retiring in 1980. Mrs. Rainwater was a former resident of Henderson and Palestine and had lived in Wharton since 1948. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and served on the calling committee. After her retirement she volunteered as a receptionist at Gulf Coast Medical Center. Mrs. Rainwater was a direct descendant of Sam Houston, the commander of the Texas Army during the Texas Revolution and the first President of the Lone Star Republic.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church in Wharton with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Edwin and Lucille Rainwater of Rockport, and Capt. Tom and Capt. Leslie Rainwater of Amarillo; sister, Kay Nash of East Bernard; grandchildren, Keith Rainwater, Terri Paterson, David Rainwater, Randy Rainwater and Todd Rainwater and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant sister and a brother.
Pallbearers were Chris, Todd, Keith, Randy, David and Kenneth Rainwater and Richard L. Trout.

Eula Richardson
Funeral services for Eula Mae Gul Richardson, 53, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. R. Glover officiating. Burial will follow in Jerusalem Cemetery in Spanish Camp. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.
Mrs. Richardson died May 13, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born March 6, 1949, in Wharton to Maurice and Susie Waddell Neal Sr.
Survivors include mother, Susie Adams of Wharton; husband, Johnnie Richardson of Wharton; son, Robert McGrew Jr. of Wharton; daughters, Charlotte McGrew, Robin McGrew, both of Wharton, and Rosylin Batiste of Richmond; brothers, Maurice Neal Jr. of Wharton and Burnell Neal Sr. of Missouri City; sisters, Juanita Heard of Rosenberg, Lou Alice Phillips and Claudette Edwards, both of Missouri City, Gloria Heard and Evelyn Davis, both of Wharton; and 10 grandchildren.

Susie Adams

Funeral services for Susie Adams, 68, of Wharton will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Martin Luther King Church of Christ with Eddie Brinkley officiating. Burial will follow in Jerusalem Cemetery.

Mrs. Adams died June 23, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Oct. 9, 1928, in Wharton to Fred and Sarah Scott Waddell.

Survivors include sons, Maurice Neal and Burnell Neal, both of Wharton; daughters, Juanita Heard of Rosenberg, Lou A. Phillips of Missouri City and Gloria Heard of Wharton; brothers, Gordon Waddell and Lewis Waddell, both of Houston; 19 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, with a host of other relatives and friends.

Charles Butterworth

Memorial services for Charles Andrew Butterworth III, 76, of Lafayette, La., were held June 9 in Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers in Lafayette, La.

Mr. Butterworth died June 6, 2003, at his residence. He was born in Gulf to Carl E. and Alice M. Butterworth.

He had been a resident of Lafayette for 30 years. Mr. Butterworth was reared in Newgulf. He attended Boling High School and Allen military Academy in Bryan. Mr. Butterworth was an Eagle Scout and later served as an assistant scoutmaster and served on the local Boy Scout Council in Lafayette. He graduated from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy, where he played clarinet in the marching band. Mr. Butterworth earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Houston. In his early career he was employed by Lykes Brothers SS Company and sailed the world as a chief engineer. On one of his voyages he met his bride from England. Most of his career, he was employed by Chevron Oil as a senior mechanical engineer. Mr. Butterworth was an active member of the Audubon Society and participated regularly in the annual Christmas Bird Count. He was also a life member of the Louisiana Ornithological Society. A strong swimmer, he was able to save a woman's life from a rain-flooded Houston bayou during Hurricane Carla.

Survivors include wife, Celia Butterworth; children, Anne Wheeler of Austin, Charles Andrew Butterworth of Kerrville, and Robin John Butterworth of Lafayette, La.; sister, Mary Engstrom of Ames, Iowa; and two grandsons.

Leola Edwards

Funeral services for Leola Hayes Edwards, 78, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at New Faith Church with Rev. M.E. Matthews officiating. Burial will follow in Jawbone Cemetery.
Mrs. Edwards died June 22, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Feb. 23, 1925, in Wharton County to the late General Hayes and Alice Stearns.

She was a lifelong resident of Wharton County. Mrs. Edward married the late George Edwards. She was a housewife and Baptist by faith.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Kay Whalon and Debra and Larry Amos; sons and daughters-in-law, Kerry Edwards Ford, Calvin Edwards, Wayne and Janice Edwards and Donald and Ivory Edwards; sister, Arrana Brooks; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Richard O'Neal

Funeral services for Richard O'Neal Sr., 86, were held Friday at Union Baptist Church in Pledger with Rev. E. L. Bonner officiating.

Mr. O'Neal was born June 8, 1917, to the late Ella Matthews and Charlie O'Neal Sr.
He made a confession to Christ at a very early age and was a devoted member of Union Baptist Church. Mr. O'Neal served as a member of the church choir, a member of the United Brotherhood Choir and was ordained as a deacon in September 1976 under leadership of Pastor A.L. Jones. Mr. O'Neal married the former Iola Jefferson on Dec. 23, 1937. She preceded him in death in April of 2002.

Survivors include their nine children and their spouses, Robert and Claudette, Ella Mae, Richard and Sharron, Beulah Mae and Robert, Jeffery and Delores, Shirley Ann and Curtis L., Rose Marie, Jessie Ray and Patricia and Johnnie Lee and Marva; foster daughter, Tiffany West; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one foster granddaughter and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters.

Paul Penrice

Funeral services for Paul Penrice, 87, of Newgulf will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Old Bethlehem Baptist Church in Newgulf with Rev. Ray Felder Penrice officiating. Burial will follow in Old Bethlehem Baptist Cemetery.

Mr. Penrice June 25, 2003, at his residence.

Survivors include wife, Eleanor Penrice of Newgulf; sons, Paul Penrice Jr. of Newgulf, Bobby Penrice of Pledger and Ray W. Penrice of West Columbia; daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Archie Branch and Brenda and Bennie Washington, all of Angleton, and Ada L. and Luther Johnson Jr. of Houston; brother, Wallace Penrice of Houston; sisters and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Quiller of Hempstead, Mable Roberts of Rosenberg, Doretha and Joe White of Houston, Doris Hillard of Palacios and Martha Williams of Bay City; sister-in-law, Eva Davis of Bay City; one uncle and one aunt; 21 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services for Elmer Sweeney, 73, of Boling will be held 2 p.m. today, Saturday, June 28, at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church. With Rev. L.T. Hurd officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery.

Mr. Sweeney died June 26, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Jan. 23, 1930, in Wharton to Robert and Rosa Brightman Sweeney.

Survivors include wife, Romie Gardner Sweeney of Boling; son, Dale Sweeney of Wharton; daughter, Helen Manning of Houston; five grandchildren and a host of other relatives.
