Wanda Corliss

Funeral services for Wanda Ann Corliss, 60, of Lissie, were held Tuesday at Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle Lake with Rev. Bill Ramsey officiating. Burial followed in Lissie Cemetery.

Mrs. Corliss died Jan. 24, 2004, at the Christus St. Catherine Hospital in Katy after an extended illness. She was born April 10, 1943, in Eagle Lake, to Roy and Hazel Wilson Tise.

She and had been a resident of Wharton and Colorado counties all her life and was Baptist by faith. Mrs. Corliss was a graduate of Eagle Lake High School and attended Wharton County Junior College. She married Walter Corliss on March 30, 1963, at the First Baptist Church in Eagle lake. They made their home in Lissie where Mrs. Corliss was a homemaker while working alongside her husband. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter.

Survivors include husband, Walter, of Lissie; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Kenneth Sliva of Inez; brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Lisa Tise of Eagle Lake; and two grandchildren.

Ruth Patton

Memorial services for Ruth Springfield Patton, 90, of Tyler, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating.

Mrs. Patton died Jan. 21, 2004. She was born on Aug. 17, 1913, in Kose, to B.F. and Effie Irene Springfield Sr.

She was a resident of Wharton until her relocation to Tyler in 1995. Mrs. Patton was a society editor of the Wharton Journal-Spectator newspaper and was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Wharton Hospital Auxiliary, Philomathians, AARP, as well as several other civic organizations. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond Samuel Patton; brother, B.F. Springfield Jr.; and sister, Lt. Col. Nora Gray Springfield, (U.S. Army, Ret.)

Survivors include daughter, Sammye Patton Woodward; brothers, Wyche Springfield, Oscar Springfield and wife, Imogene, and Rev. Hansel Springfield; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, the Wharton Hospital Auxiliary or the American Diabetes Association.

Leon Spanihel

Funeral services for Leon J. “Sonny” Spanihel, 77, of Eagle Lake, were held Tuesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with Rev. Dan Kahlich officiating. Burial followed in Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake.

Mr. Spanihel died Jan. 24, 2004, at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital in Houston following a brief illness. He was born in Eagle Lake to Rudolph F. and Bertha Mikulenka Spanihel.

He was a lifelong resident of Eagle Lake and a graduate of Eagle Lake High School Class of 1943. Mr. Spanihel served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Tech 4 with Co. B 1631th Engineering Construction Battalion and awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Ribbon-Japan, Victory Ribbon and two Overseas Service Bars. He returned to Eagle Lake and joined the family business, Spanihel & Son Dry Goods in Eagle Lake. Mr. Spanihel married Charlyne Stephenson April 5, 1948. He closed the business in 1987 a year after he was elected Commissioner of Colorado County Precinct 4. Mr. Spanihel served his community and county for three terms until retirement in 1998. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus, Knights of Columbus Council No. 4843 in Eagle Lake, Christopher Columbus Kights of Columbus No. 1136, 4th Degree of Columbus. He was also a member of the V.F.W. Post No. 8783 in Eagle Lake and American Legion Post No. 108 in Eagle Lake. Mr. Spanihel also served for more than 50 years in the Eagle Lake Volunteer Fire Department and served as fire chief for 25 of those years.
Survivors include wife, Charlyne S. Spanihel of Eagle Laker; children and spouses, Cynthia Anne and Edward Sunderman of Eagle Lake, Joe Mike and Diane Spanihel of Eagle Lake, Teresa Marie and Frank Briscoe of Alleyton, Mary Jo Spanihel of Rosenberg, Stephen Patrick and Vivian Spanihel of Garwood and Shawn Kevin Spanihel of Harlingen; sister, Grace M. Spanihel of Eagle Lake: 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, John Dullahan of Orange and Draper and Patty Stephens of Eagle Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dolores Dullahan.

The family has requests memorials be made to the Eagle Lake Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 38, Eagle Lake, TX 77434; Rice Medical Foundation, P.O. Box 277, Eagle Lake, TX 77434; or St. Anthony’s School, 635 Bonham, Columbus TX 78934.

Jose Flores

Funeral services for Jose Flores, 75, of Lane City, was held Tuesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary was recited Monday at the Chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Flores died March 6, 2004, in a Wharton hospital following a sudden illness. He was born Sept. 16, 1928, in New Braunfels, the son of the late Manuel Flores and Delores Sara Flores.

He was a resident of Lane City for the past 36 years and was Catholic by faith. Mr. Flores was a self-employed auto mechanic and formerly worked with Lonnie Lindberg. He married Inez Castillo in 1951 in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Inez Flores of Lane City; daughters, Esther Flores of Wharton, Delores Cooper of Nacogdoches and Mary Mata of San Augustine; son, Manuel Flores of Freeport; sister, Rachel Flores of Pledger; brother, Elias Flores of Wharton, nine grandchildren and 15 Great Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews survive.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Avenue Wharton, TX 77488.

Jack Hawes

Jack Rust Hawes Jr., 81, of Galveston, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2004, at his residence.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 10, at Malloy and Son Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Baumann officiating. Burial will follow the service at Oleander Cemetery. The family received visitors after Tuesday at Malloy and Son Funeral Home. An Elks memorial service was held led by Galveston Elks Lodge No. 126.

Mr. Hawes was born Sept. 14, 1922, in Lawton, Okla., but moved to Galveston when he was five. He graduated from Ball High School in 1941 and served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Navy. After the war, Mr. Hawes played football for two years at the University of Texas, and he remained a lifelong UT fan. Jack worked in the construction business for a number of years before opening his own steel building company, B & H Steel, which he owned and operated for more than 20 years. He was also a lifelong farmer, owning and farming many rice fields in the area.
He had a true zest for life and enjoyed many and varied interests during his life. He loved hunting and fishing and was a member of The Moose Den, a hunting club he formed, since 1957. He was also active in bowling and could often be found watching car racing, the Astros or UT games, or listening to sports radio. Jack was a member of the Texas Exes, AARP and a 44-year member of the Galveston Elks Lodge No. 126.

Jack is preceded in death by his wife, Cleo H. Hawes; son, Roy “Stoney” Hawes; parents, Jack Rust and Carrie Hawes Sr.; and his sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Ailes Mathis, and their son, Ailes Mathis Jr.

He is survived by his grandchildren: Sean Rust Hawes, Brooke Shannon Hawes, both of Houston; and Stratton Weekley, of Austin; daughter-in-law: Diane Johnigan and husband Robert, of Houston; brother-in-law: Harry Hughes and wife, Cecilia, of Bolivar; special nieces, Kathy, “Tookie” and Debbie; and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Pallbearers will be J.B. Kennedy, George Helmond, Steve Hawes, Gene Austin, Richard Biffle Jr. and Jake Lupher.

Honorary pallbearers will be William J. Redman, Ed Campbell, Carlos “Ippy” Ippolito, Bobo Conde, Sonny Milos and Robert Johnigan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 129, Texas City, TX 77592-0129.

Lola Ingram

Funeral services for Lola Mae Ingram, 71, of San Antonio, will be held Saturday at Sutton Chapel in San Antonio with Rev. M.E. Matthews officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Sam Houston Cemetery.
Mr. Ingram died March 7, 2004, at Paramount Nursing Home. She was born July 12, 1932, in Pierce, Okla., to Booker T. Palmer and Mary Seal.

She was a San Antonio resident for 33 years. Mrs. Ingram was a housewife and Baptist by faith.
Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Kathryn Palmer and Argean and Keith Gordon; sons, James Ingram Jr., Gregory Ingram and Rodney Ingram; sisters, Gerlean Harold, Jo Anne Green, Nadine Cleveland and Tressie Dean; brothers, David Palmer, Troy Palmer, Elmer Palmer, Ray Caldwell, Leon Caldwell, John Caldwell, Leroy Palmer and Booker Palmer Jr.; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Jerry Fink

Funeral services for Jerry E. Fink, 47, of Wharton and former longtime resident of Eagle Lake, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, at United Methodist Church with Rev. David King officiating. Entombment will follow in the Lakeside Mausoleum in Eagle Lake.

Mr. Fink died May 2, 2004, at the Gulf Coast Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Pasadena on Sept. 27, 1956, to W.A. “Bill” and Betty Jean Redmond Fink.

He resided in Eagle Lake most of his life, was reared in the Methodist Church and was a graduate of Rice Consolidated High School. Mr. Fink was supervisor for Nan Ya Plastics since 1985.

Survivors include his parents, Bill and Betty Fink of Weatherford; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dennis and Georgi Fink of Houston and Gary and Merit of Lipan. He was preceded in death by his son, Kyle Ryan Fink on Aug. 16, 1996.

Dennis Guthman

Funeral services for Dennis Lee Guthman, age 56, of Bastrop, were held Monday at Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle Lake with Rev. Bill Ramsey and Rev. Ken Jones officiating. military honors and burial followed in Lissie Cemetery under the auspices of American Legion Post No. 143 of Schulenburg.

Mr. Guthman died July 2, 2004, at his residence. He was born Oct. 12, 1947, in Eagle Lake, to Lee Roy and Inez Wilson Guthman.

He graduated from East Bernard High School Class of 1966, attended Wharton County Junior College and Sam Houston State University. Mr. Guthman served his country in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1976, was a member of the Lissie United Methodist Church and American Legion Post No. 143 of Schulenburg. He had careers in rice farming, truck driving and electrical utility operator and lineman. Mr. Guthman married Robin Correll in Schulenburg on June 6, 1992, and has been a resident of Bastrop for the past 10 years.

Survivors include his wife, Robin; daughter, Dana Guthman Clipson and husband, Richard III, of Eagle Lake; son, Jonathan Lee Guthman and wife, Jenny, of Orchard; step-son, Garron Giffen of Bastrop; two grandchildren; father, Lee Roy Guthman of Lissie; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Stanley and Joann Correll of Schulenburg; brothers, David Guthman, Tommy Guthman and wife Gail, all of Lissie; brother-in-law, Andrew Correll and wife, Kym, of New Braunfels; sisters-in-law, Chris Carvajal and husband, John, of St. Petersburg, Fla., Janet Allen and husband, Mike, of Frisco, and Amanda Rivers and husband, Shane, of Schulenburg. He was preceded in death by his mother, Inez Wilson Guthman, on Nov. 5, 1993.

Warrene Malek-Genzer

Funeral services for Warrene Malek-Genzer, 86, of Houston, were held June 24 in the Chapel of the Oaks at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.

Mrs. Malek-Genzer died June 21, 2004. She was born March 12, 1918, in Columbia, Miss., the daughter of Eugene Slade and Agnes O. Herrington Slade.

She graduated from Columbia High School and attended Hinds Junior College. Mrs. Malek-Genzer was a successful realtor in Northwest Houston for many years. She was active in the Houston Association of Realtors as well as many other real estate organizations until her retirement.

Mrs. Malek-Genzer was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Loyce Slade Campbell; infant son, Robert Chavers III; and husband, Jerome H. Malek. She is survived by husband, William A. Genzer; son Walter J. Malek and wife Mary Lee; one grandson and one great-granddaughter; and brother Kenneth Slade of East Bernard; and several nieces.

William Mozisek

Funeral services for William Joseph “Willie” Mozisek, 71, of Ganado, were held Tuesday at St. Mary’s Church with Rev. John Peters officiating. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Mr. Mozisek died July 2, 2004. He was born June 26, 1933, in Hallettsville to the late Felix Fred and Clara Holik Mozisek.

He worked as a farmer and was a member of St. Mary’s Church. He married Rose Marie Kreschke in Wharton on April 2, 1976.

Survivors include wife, Rose Marie Mozisek; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and John Sanchez of Wallis; son, Kenneth Lee Mozisek of Louise; and one granddaughter.

If desiring, memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Church in Ganado or the American Cancer Society.

Ronald Kielman

Ronald Joe Kielman, age 58, of Wharton, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton. He was born on April 15, 1946, in Wharton, the son of Almus and Dorothy McCurry Kielman.

Mr. Kielman graduated from Wharton High School in 1964, where he excelled as an athlete in football and basketball. He was chosen as a member of the Fort Worth Star Telegram’s All State Football Team in 1964. Mr. Kielman attended Wharton County Junior College and played football for the Pioneers. He served in the National Guard for six years. Mr. Kielman married Cynthia Dianne Whiddon on Feb. 28, 1969, in Wharton. He was a member of Pipeliners Local Union No. 798 and spent the past 30 years working on pipelines across the United States. He married Sherry Ann Gage on June 9, 1991, in St. George, Utah.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at Wharton Funeral Home with Sherrell Speer officiating. Interment follows in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Dorothy McCurry Kielman Pontiff and Alvin Pontiff of Wharton; daughter and son-in-law, Shelly Jo and Keith Janac of College Station, TX; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Jonica Kielman of Wharton; grandchildren, Jordan Ferrell, Riley Ferrell and Dillon Janac of College Station and Thomas Wayne Kielman of Wharton. He was preceded in death by his father, Almus “Babe” Kielman, sister, Deborah Leah Kielman Rodriguez and brother, Carlton Gary Kielman.

Pallbearers were Tommy Coker, Pat Sappington, Fibber Houseworth, Ronnie Boedeker, August Brandl, A.J. Sitka and Freddie Pyka.

Honorary pallbearers included all of the members of Pipeliners Local Union No. 798.
