May Duncan

May Shelmire Duncan of Carbondale, Colo., passed away Saturday, Sept. 15, 2006. One of five children, she was born in San Antonio, May 7, 1955, to Genevieve Lykes Duncan and G. Cameron Duncan.
Mrs. Duncan was a loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, great-aunt, cousin and friend.

She was preceded in death by her father, G. Cameron Duncan and her brother, James McKay Duncan.

She is survived by her husband, Wendell “Skip” Doty; her mother, Genevieve Lykes Duncan; her siblings, Genevieve Duncan and husband, Keith Snodgrass, Cameron Duncan Jr. and wife, Susan, F. Bowie Duncan and wife, Helen; seven nieces and nephews, one great-niece and one great-nephew.
Mrs. Duncan grew up in San Antonio attending St. Mary’s Hall and graduating high school from The Selwyn School in Denton. She attended the University of Denver, graduating from the University of Colorado, Boulder, with a degree in anthropology and a minor in art. She had interests in many areas and was always very artistic. Ms. Duncan kept in close contact with her siblings, nieces and nephews, and traveled back to San Antonio often to visit her parents and attend to business in Texas. She had close friends from the schools she attended, keeping in touch with many of them throughout her life.

May met Skip in college and they were married after having moved to Boston where Skip attended graduate school at MIT. From Boston they returned to Colorado to settle first in Glenwood Springs and then in Carbondale. Mrs. Duncan had a strong connection to the Unitarian Universalist Church in Glenwood Springs and would continue to attend the church services and events with close friends she had met there. In Carbondale she became closely familiar with the Mt. Sopris Montessori School, and was a substitute teacher and devoted supporter of the school. She spent many hours there getting to know the directors of the school at that time, the late Mark Ross and Kathryn Ross, and loved working with school projects, the children and other teachers. Mrs. Duncan also had a special interest in and helped support the Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale.

In countless ways Mrs. Duncan touched the lives of many people. She was always interested in getting to know a person well. She was thoughtful, loving, supportive of many charities, and interested in helping out where ever she could. Having lived in Colorado for much of her life, she came to love the landscape, wildlife and communities that surrounded her. Mrs. Duncan will be deeply missed by all, and we know that she will live on in our hearts with her openness, warmth and the smile with which she greeted everyone. She made us laugh, she sat with us while we cried and she always encouraged us to do our best.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Mt. Sopris Montessori School, 876 Euclid Ave., Carbondale, CO 81623; the Colorado Rocky Mountain School, 1493 CR 106, Carbondale, CO 81623; the San Antonio Area Foundation, P.O. Box 120366 San Antonio, TX 78212-9566; St. Mary’s Hall, 9401 Starcrest Dr., San Antonio, TX 78217.
