Maria Aguilar
Maria “Mary” Aguilar, age 61, of Wharton, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, in a Houston hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Wharton County on April 1, 1941, the daughter of the late Ramon Hernandez and Frances Ramirez Hernandez.
Mrs. Aguilar had been a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. She was active in the choir and prayer group at Mount Caramel Church. Mrs. Aguilar worked in the cafeteria at Wharton Junior High School for six years until her retirement in 1991. She was a former worker at the Department of Human Services and Cartwheel Lodge. Mrs. Aguilar married Miguel “Mike” Aguilar on Sept. 18, 1964, in Wharton. She was preceded in death by an infant son and daughter.
A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Father Raymond Jackson officiating. Cremation and burial followed at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
Survivors include her husband, Mike Aguilar of Wharton; son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Rebecca Aguilar of Wharton; sisters, Santos Rivera and Shirley Castro, both of Wharton, and Margaret Garcia of El Campo; brothers, Frank Hernandez and Eliseo Hernandez, both of Wharton, Johnnie Hernandez of Mandeville, La., Raymond Hernandez Jr. of San Antonio and Gregorio Hernandez of Rosenberg; grandchildren, Krista, Jesse, Aaron and Deanna Aguilar, all of Wharton.
Pallbearers were Michael Hernandez, Rudolph Rivera, Joseph Rivera, Mercedes Dominguez, Steve Sanchez and Jesse Aguilar.
Honorary pallbearers were Adolph Sanchez, Greg Aguilar, Arthur Aguilar, Jonathan Hernandez, Matthew Hernandez, Bennie Ferrel Jr., Michael Ferrel and all of her many family and friends.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church Building Fund, 506 5. East Ave., Wharton, Texas 77488.

Willie Bankston
Funeral services for Willie Bankston II, age 87, of Eagle Lake, were held Thursday, at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home with Rev. N. Lemons officiating. Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Bankston died June 23, 2002, at his residence. He was born Jan. 30, 1915, in Wharton to Mr. and Mrs. Willie Bankston Sr.
Survivors are many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Harvey Dixon
Following cremation, memorial services for Harvey Herman Dixon, 75, of Wharton, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Burial followed in Wharton City Cemetery.
Mr. Dixon died June 19, 2002, at his residence after a brief illness. He was born on Oct. 31, 1926 in Eagle Lake, the son of the late Elmer Herman Dixon and Minnie Beulah Carpenter Dixon.
He was a 22-year resident of Wharton and a former resident of Freeport and Hamburg, Ark. Mr. Dixon was employed as a diesel mechanic for various companies including Hughes Tools until his retirement in 1994. He married Evelyn O’Dell Grantham on Dec. 29, 1967, in Freeport, and was preceded in death by her on Nov. 30, 1989. Mr. Dixon was a member of the Chula Vista, California Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his daughter, Pamela Shipp of Lovington, N.M.; sisters, Joyce Hayhurst of Wharton, Elizabeth Foster of Richwood and Grace Marie Brown of Corpus Christi; brother, Thomas Lee Dixon of Santa Barbara, Calif.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Dixon.
Memorials are requested to the Shriners Children’s Hospital, 6977 Main Street, Houston, Texas 77030-3701.

Paul Hardy
Paul Ted Hardy, age 87, of Wharton, died Monday, June 24, 2002, in at Gulf Coast Medical Center following an extended illness. He was born on July 28, 1914, in Wallis, the son of Tom Albert and Elnora Kasper Hradecky.
Mr. Hardy was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He received a Purple Heart for wounds received in action. Mr. Hardy married Martha Mary Orsak on May 22, 1949, in Wharton. He worked as a butcher and store manager for A.B. Stallings, Lockwood’s Grocery and Dee’s Grocery. He was a former member of American Legion post No. 87 in Wharton. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Hardy was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and five sisters.
A rosary was recited at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church and a funeral mass followed at 10 a.m. with Father Joe Vrana officiating. Interment followed in the Wharton City Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton.
Survivors include; wife, Martha Hardy of Wharton; daughter and son-in-law: Deborah and David Cline of Richmond; son and daughter-in-law, Gary Paul and Regina Hardy of Olive Branch, Miss.; sister, Ann Toomey of Santa Rosa, Calif.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were: Jonathan Kaluza, Danny Kaluza, Jacob Hardy, Melvin Buenger, Dennis Keprta and Harvey Stelzel.
Honorary pallbearers were all of his many friends and neighbors.
In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorials to Holy Family Catholic Church, 2011 Briar Lane, Wharton, Texas 77488; or a charity of personal choice.
Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Robert Lee
Funeral services for Robert Sanford Lee, 76, of Angleton, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, July 1, at Palms Funeral Home in Angleton with Rev. Ben Pomales officiating. Burial will follow in Angleton Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home today, Saturday, from 5-8 p.m.
Mr. Lee was born in Venus to V.V. and Edna Barksdale Lee on Oct. 18, 1925. He passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Country Village Care Center in Angleton. His wife, Lena, preceded him in death on Nov. 1, 1996.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Christine Lee of Old Ocean; daughters and sons-in-law, Bobbie Jean and Pete Giles of Angleton and Lisa Ann and Mark Goff of Boling; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Jimmy Kingston of Venus; grandsons, Joseph “Jo” Giles and fiancé Sherry of Angleton, Robert “Bo” Giles and fiancé Terri of Anglelon, Matt Lee of College Station, Adam Dvorak of Dallas, Andrew Goff of Boling, Allen Goff of Boling, Jadon Lee of Old Ocean, Jordan Lee of Old Ocean; granddaughters, Kristi Lee Smith and husband John of Angleton, Teri Elaine Cullen and husband Eric of Tomball, Jennifer Kay Hernandez and husband Rene of Austin, Hannah Lee and Faith Lee of Old Ocean; great-grandchildren, Kaden Smith, Cross Hernandez, Madeline Dvorak and Lena Goff.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Joseph “Jo” Giles, Robert “Bo” Giles, Matt Lee, Adam Dvorak, Andrew Goff and Allen Goff.

Frank Farley

Graveside services for Frank Farley, 87, of Wharton, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Saturday, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Farley died Sept. 12, 2002.

Lavaughn Haynes

Funeral services for Lavaughn Haynes, 52, of Houston, will be held Tuesday at New Zion Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. A.J. Hattfield officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Monday at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Monday.

Mr. Haynes died Sept. 11, 2002, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston. He was born March 17, 1950, in Wharton to Willie and Eulalia Moore Haynes.

Survivors include father, Willie Haynes of Wharton; mother and step-father, Eulalia and Floyd Swearengin of Houston; sons, Adrian Clark, Patrick Clark, Kevin Haynes, Trevon Treadwell, Anthony Haynes and Tristan Treadwell, all of Houston; daughter, Christina Davis of Wharton; brothers, Andrew Haynes and Chris Haynes, both of Wharton; sisters, Gladys Haynes, Ernestine Haynes and Lori Haynes, all of Wharton.

Mansfield Parson

Funerals services for Mansfield Parson, 66, of Lane City, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Lane City with Rev. Charles Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in Sandies community.

Mr. Parson died Sept. 8, 2002, at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center after a lengthy illness. He was born June 6, 1936, in Sandies community to the late Ellen Callis Parson and Chance Parson.
He had been a resident of the county for 35 years and married Veola Merchant. Mr. Parson was a contractor and was Baptist by faith.

Survivors include wife, Veola Merchant Parson; daughter, Veosa Jammer; sons and daughter-in-law, Ricky Parson, Mansfield and Diane Parson Jr., Alfred Parson, Anthony Calvin Parson, Gary Parson and Eric Parson; sisters, Clairine Matis of Corpus Christi, Marie Parson Soda of Ganado, Viola Caesar of El Campo and Betty Joyce Deinus of San Antonio; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Patrick Parson.

Walter Hayhurst

Walter C. Hayhurst Sr., 80, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, after a three-year courageous battle. He was born Dec. 10, 1921, in Wharton, to George and Ester Hayhurst.

Mr. Hayhurst married Lillian Tracie Hajducek on March 15, 1941, in Wharton. After serving in the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II he returned to Wharton as a loving father, volunteer fireman for 25 years and local business owner. He was a self-employed auto mechanic and owner of Hayhurst Garage in Wharton from 1959 until his retirement in 1985. Mr. Hayhurst was a member of American Legion Post No. 87 in Wharton for 45 years. He enjoyed raising bananas, gardening, canning jelly and pickles, fishing and playing dominos with good friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Wharton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Lillian Tracie Hayhurst; his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. Hayhurst Jr. of Centennial, Colo.; his daughter and son-in- law, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Matthys of Sugar Land; his grandson and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Troy Matthys, who have given him two great-grandchildren, Nathan Paul and Cana Bethany Matthys; his brother, George “Sonny” Hayhurst of Wharton; sisters, Ruth Caldwell and Wilma Goode, both of Wharton; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Vivian Peterson.

Pallbearers were Vernon East, Bill Kincer, J.R. Goode, A.J. Rath, Vernon Tyus and Troy Corbin Matthys.

If desiring, memorials may be made to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo, Texas 79174-9989.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Lovie Matthys

Mrs. Lovie Lavern Noles Matthys, age 85, of Wharton died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at her residence following a sudden illness. She was born on June 19, 1917 in Tarrant County, the daughter of the late Gilbert Noles and Lula Alice Mathews Noles.

Mrs. Matthys had been a resident of Wharton County for most of her life and was a devout member of First United Methodist Church in Wharton. She married Werner Carl Matthys on Dec. 9, 1934, in Columbus and he preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 1995. She was also preceded in death by a son, Craig Werner Matthys in 1954, and one brother and one sister. She took pride in her family, friends and farm.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at First United Methodist Church in Wharton with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Burial followed in Wharton City Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Thomas Van Pelt of Wilmington, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Deaine Matthys of Hurst; grandchildren, Thomas and Roger Van Pelt, Carl Matthys II, Tara and Paige Matthys; great-grandchildren, Kate Matthys Van Pelt, Michael Werner Van Pelt, Thomas Van Pelt III and Grace Katherine Van Pelt.

Pallbearers were Thomas Van Pelt, Roger Van Pelt, Carl Matthys II, Tara Matthys, Paige Matthys and Al Cerny.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the Lovie Matthys Memorial, c/o First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Tracy Shelton

Tracy Lane Shelton, 38, died Monday Oct. 28, 2002, at his home in Houston after a lengthy illness. He was born Dec. 4, 1963, in Wharton, to Jackie Shelton and Adeline Zgabay Kulak.

Mr. Shelton was a graduate of Boling High School. He had a landscape business for several years until he became ill. He loved fishing, hunting, the outdoors, working in his garden and cooking. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Mary and Arnold Zgabay.

A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 1805 West Alabama at Woodhead, in Houston. A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton over the Thanksgiving holidays, with date and time to be announced later.

Survivors include his best friend, Darrell Cameron; dog and best friend, Seiko; mother and step-father, Adeline and John Kulak of Boling; dad and step-mother, Jackie and Shannah Shelton of San Antonio; sister and brother-in-law, Kye and Steve Fishkin of Bradford, Pa.; brother, Kevin Shelton of Blessing; nephews, Aaron and Justin Fishkin of Bradford, Pa.; niece, Chelsi Taylor Shelton of Brazoria; aunt and uncle, Mickey and Mack Hill of Pledger; uncle, A.C. Shelton of Wharton; aunt, Mimi McCart of Wharton; cousins, Guy Shelton, Vana Hill Fender, Marsha Hill Sperry and Delona Hill Novak.

Margot Armour

Margot Boyd Armour, age 70, of Live Oak House, Pierce Ranch, Pierce, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 in Houston. She was born on Dec. 31, 1932, in Atlanta, Ga., the daughter of the late James Boyd and Margaret Matthews Boyd.

Mrs. Armour was a graduate of the Latin School of Chicago and attended The Sorbonne in Paris, France. She married Laurance Hearne Armour Jr. on April 7, 1954 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Mrs. Armour attended both St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Bay City and St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Wharton.

Mrs. Armour and her husband resided in Lake Forest, Ill., from 1954 until 1988. She served on the women’s board of The Field Museum and on the women’s board of Passavent Hospital and its successor Northwestern Memorial Hospital. After moving to Texas, Mrs. Armour was active on the board of the Wharton County Historical Museum.

Funeral services for Mrs. Armour will be held 4 p.m. today, Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Wharton with Rev. Hoss Gwinn and Rev. Bruce Bonner officiating.
Survivors include her husband, Laurance H. Armour Jr.; daughter, Brooks Armour Diesel and her husband, Henry Diesel of Houston; sons, Steven Shelby Armour of Houston and Laurance H. Armour III and his wife, Suzanne Nicksick Armour of Richmond; seven grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers are The Honorable James A. Baker III, Jesse Couch, W.D. McMillan, Max B. Rotholz, Carl N. Reynolds, Allen B. Craig III, Woodie E. Townsend and John W. Hughes.
Pallbearers in abstentia are Henry Hoffstot and Hempstead Washburne.

Arthur Herrera

Graveside services for Arthur David Herrera, infant son of Jose Antonio Herrera and Nancy Cantu, were held Friday at the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating.

Arthur died Feb. 18, 2003, in Houston. He was born Jan. 5, 2003, in Houston.

Survivors include parents, Joe Herrera and Nancy Cantu, both of Wharton; twin brother, Alfred Jesse Herrera of Wharton; half-brothers, Joe Anthony Herrera, John Edward Herrera, Hector David Herrera and Pete Garza Herrera, all of Boling; sisters; Anna Lopez, Desiree Lopez and Destiny Herrera, all of Wharton; grandparents, Rose Cantu of Wharton and Feliciana Herrera of Arizona; and great-grandmother, Ramona Valdez of Arizona; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Domingo Lopez

Funeral services for Domingo Reyes Lopez, 79, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Joel Ramirez officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Lopez died Feb. 20, 2003, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born Sept. 18, 1923, in Edna, the son of the late Joe Lopez and Josefina Jimenez Lopez.

He was a former resident of Edna and Beaumont and had been a resident of Wharton since 1946. He married Aurora Franco on March 3, 1946, in Edna. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Mr. Lopez was Protestant by Faith. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Otilia Perez and Anita Lopez.

Survivors include his wife, Dora Lopez of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Linda Lopez of Austin, Daniel and Alma Lopez of Port Arthur and Roy and Sandy Lopez of South Houston; brother, John Lopez of Crestview, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons and nephews.
