Jo P. Waits

Graveside services for Jo P. Waits, age 86, of Hensley Ark, will be held Friday, July 22, 2005 at 11 a.m. in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Family visitation was held July 19 at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway, Ark.
Jo P. Waits passed away Sunday, July 17, 2005 in Hensley Arkansas. She was born on August 24, 1918 in Cross Roads, Texas, to William Henry Brown and Mary Harriett Toole Brown.
She retired from Conway Human Development Center as a medication aid, was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a member of Lorance Drive Church of Christ in Hensley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Oscar Lee Waits; sisters Erin Cheatham, Jim Humberson, Lena Humberson and Stacy Rudin; and infant brother R.C. Brown.

Her survivors include her daughter Sondra Derks and husband Fred of Spring, Tex.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Pat Waits of Hensley, Ark., Gary and Wilma Waits of Damascus, Ark.; four grandsons, Lance Derks of Houston, Eric Derks of Spring, Micah Waits and Joseph Waits of Hensley; two granddaughters and spouses, Alicia and Jimmy Weser and Kristy and Doug Palmer all of Conway; two great-grandsons Will Palmer and Noah Weser of Conway; several nieces and nephews; as well as her dog Sasha. All of her family was special to her and she loved them very much.

Albert F. Wuthrich

Albert Frederick Wuthrich was born to Fred Wuthrich and Martha Schoeneberg on November 24, 1920 in the family in the Crescent community. He died on Sunday, July 17, 2005 at his home following an extended illness.
Albert Wuthrich graduated from Crescent High School in 1939. While a student at Crescent he began his work in agriculture during the 1936 session and held various offices in the Crescent FFA until his graduation.
His completion of six years of farm projects and his studies of vocational agriculture earned him the National American Farmer Degree making him the first young man in Wharton County to receive this degree. It was conferred on him in absentia due to his service in the Air Corps.
Albert Wuthrich was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church in Wharton. He served as elder and trustee. In recent years he had been confined to his hospital bed at home.

S.Sgt. Albert F. Wuthrich served his country during World War II in the 916th Air engineer Squadron from 1942-1945. He served in campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. His citations include four overseas Service Bars, EAME Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars, Distinguished Unit Badge Hq. 445th, one Service Stripe and Good Conduct Medal.
El Campo Independent School District awarded Mr. Wuthrich with the Honorary Board Member certificate in appreciation of his service for 20 years as a school board member of Crescent and El Campo schools.
He also received an award of recognition for exceptional ability in the field of farming and devoted community service by the Wharton Chamber of Commerce in 1964. He was a member of Wharton County Farm Bureau and served as its president for many years.

Mr. Wuthrich was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Norbert A. Wuthrich and Edward E. Wuthrich and grandson Nathan Frederick Denton.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann Wuthrich; daughters Nancy Denton of Galveston and Jane and Thomas E. Smith of Crescent; grandchildren and their spouses, Dr. Darrell G. and Sioux Smith of Holland, Tex., Jenna Christen Smith, Kendra Joy Smith of Bryan, S.Sgt. Joseph D. Denton of Georgia, Airman Micah S. Denton of Kentucky, Ensign Anna Elizabeth Denton of California and Laura Jane Denton of Galveston; brother and sisters-in-law Harold E. and Mary Wuthrich of Palacios, Helen Wuthrich of Wharton, Geraldine Wuthrich of Pierce and Lee and Arnold A. Wuthrich of Henrietta, Georgia; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held for Albert Frederick Wuthrich, 84, of Wharton, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wharton with Rev. Barry Sharp officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
Pallbearers were Dr. Darrell Smith, Keith Kresta, Barry Wuthrich, Dennis Wuthrich, Kenneth Wuthrich, Glenn Wuthrich, Robert Wuthrich and David Wuthrich. Honorary pallbearers were Arnold A. Wuthrich, Tommy E. Smith, Delvin Wuthrich, Vernon Ullmann, Robert Baker, Harold W. Wuthrich, Bill Hubenak, Mark Wuthrich and Bill Younger.
In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorial to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 614 Pecan St., Wharton TX 77488 or Hospice Support Care, 1102 N. Mechanic, Suite B, El Campo, TX 77437.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Debra Burton

Funeral services for Debra Burton, 50, of Alvin, were held Friday at Wheeler Funeral Home in El Campo with Rev. Clyde Grier officiating. Burial followed in Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo.

Mrs. Burton died July 25, 2005, in Webster. She was born Dec. 19, 1954, in El Campo to the late Sullivan and Joanne Henke Helfer.

She worked as director of receiving at Wal-Mart in Alvin. Mrs. Burton was Lutheran by faith.

Survivors include husband Jerry Burton of Alvin; daughter, Leslie Lynnette Budaus of Brenham; sons, Michael Gene Budaus Jr. and Christopher Ross Budaus, both of Brenham; brother, Phillip Randy Helfer of Brenham; sister, Cindy Ware of Lane City; and four grandchildren.

Florence Kubena

A memorial service for Florence “Zeke” Kubena, 77, of East Bernard, was held Wednesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. Rev. Don Ruppert officiated the service.

A rosary was held Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Mrs. Kubena was born Nov. 24, 1927 in San Felipe to Ernest Oldag and Hattie Reznicek Oldag. She passed away July 24, 2005, in Houston.

She is survived by her husband, Edwin Kubena Sr.; sons, Edwin Kubena Jr. and wife, Judi, and their family, Tessa, Todd, Cody, Hope, Denise, Blaine, Cael and Katie; Jerry Kubena and wife, Joyce, and their family, Connie, Miya, Crystal, Richard, Savannah, Evvalee, Missy, Brandon and Tatum; James Kubena and wife, Sherry, and their family, Bryan, Marty, Braden, Brandy, Jimmy, Robert, Amanda and Peyton; Patrick Kubena and wife, Karen, and their family, Matthew, Eric and Jonah; David Kubena and wife, Phyllis, and their family, Abram, Zachary and Jacob; John Kubena and wife, Monica, and their family, John Jr., Brady, Kelly, Sara and Tara; Joseph Kubena and wife, Laura, and their family, Adam and Andrew.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Mrs. Kubena to the Tara Kubena Medical Fund, c/o Prosperity Bank, 700 Church St., East Bernard, TX 77435; or the Jerry Wayne Kubena Medical Account, c/o Amegy Bank, 9212 N. Highway 60, East Bernard, TX 77435.

Service arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg.

Leroy Sanchez

Funeral services for Leroy L. Sanchez, 81, of Hungerford, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 3 to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Sanchez died July 29, 2005, at his home in Hungerford.

J.W. Blackwell

J.W. Blackwell, age 79, of Wharton, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, in a Houston hospital. He was born on April 25, 1926, in Houston, son of the late Willis Blackwell and R.J. Key Blackwell.

Mr. Blackwell was a 28-year resident of Wharton and a former resident of Rock Island, Eagle Lake and Pledger. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Blackwell married Lena Joyce White on Feb. 7, 1953, in Wharton. He worked as a contract welder for most of his life and most recently was a self-employed rancher. He was a member of the Texas Cattleman’s Association and was a member of the Dairy Queen Coffee Club.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, at the Wharton Funeral Home with Mr. Mickey Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow in the Wharton City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Blackwell of Wharton; daughters, Donna Tydlacka and husband, Woody, of Boling, Wendy Foisner and husband, David, of Boling and Cynthia Courtney and husband, Dennis, of Des Moines, Iowa; sons Raymond Blackwell and wife, Cyndie, of Coldspring and Wesley Blackwell of Wharton; sisters, Geraldine Sanders of Mathews and Joyce Barnhill of Wharton; grandchildren, James Larry Capps, Samantha Foisner, Melanie Foisner, Jake Foisner, Brandy Courtney, Ryan Blackwell, Sarah Tydlacka and Sonny Scott Tydlacka and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Lois Boerner, Izora Rice, Darlene Loocke, Billie Mayfield, Aileen Sanders and grandson, Christopher Capps.
Pallbearers are Ryan Blackwell, James Capps, Aaron Prihoda, Robbie Sanders, Randy Sanders and Justin Porter.

If desiring, memorials may be made to a charity of personal choice.

George Hodge

George Washington Hodge, age 96, of Wharton, died Feb. 19, 2006, in Wharton. He was born on May 27, 1909, in Beasley, the son of Oliver Jefferson Hodge and Martha Estelle Walden Hodge.

Mr. Hodge was a former resident of Pledger and Newgulf before moving to Wharton in 1964. He married Alma Ruth McGilvray on Jan. 26, 1935, in Newgulf.
Mr. Hodge was an administrative assistant in the Field Department at Texas Gulf Sulphur Company at the time of his retirement. He enjoyed all aspects of farming and hydroponic gardening. His greatest earthly treasure was his wonderful wife of 68 years. With this union came a large and loving family who are so proud to call him Daddy and Granddaddy. Mr. Hodge was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wharton where he showed his love for God and his church family. For many years one of his contributions to his church was mowing the lawn on a weekly basis.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church with The Reverend Paul Thomasson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Ruth Koonce and husband, Allen, of Taft, Marjory Hurta of West Columbia and Etta Mayfield and husband, Alec, of Wharton; daughter-in-law, Jackie Hodge of Wharton; brother-in-law, Gaylon McGilvray and wife, Frances, of Smithville; sister-in-law, Dorothy McGilvray of Onalaska; grandchildren, Becky Koonce-Meyer, Nancy Humberson, Lori Dawson, Sharon Johnson, Terri Hutchins, Jeanne Smith, Sandy Williams, Ronald Barker, Steven Barker, David Koonce, Keith Barker, Brent Barker, Wayne Hodge and Sammy Hodge; 34 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers are his grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers are Alec Mayfield, Allen Koonce, Gene Barker, friends, neighbors, nieces, nephews, Dr. Jody Gilstrap and his outstanding nurses at Gulf Coast Medical Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Alma Ruth; son, George Wayne; eight sisters; four brothers; and one granddaughter.

If desiring, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, TX 77488; Polycystic Kidney Foundation, 4901 Main Street, Suite 200, Kansas City, MO 64112; or to a charity of personal choice.

Pauline Powers

Funeral services for Pauline Maxine Tyson Powers, 86, of Edna and formerly of Wharton, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel in Edna.
Mrs. Powers died Feb. 20, 2006, in Edna. She was born Jan. 18, 1920, in Wichita Falls.

She married Charles Roy Davis in 1942 and moved to Louise where they reared their two children. In 1972 she married Ira W. Powers, an apartment contractor of Houston. They made their home in Rosenberg. She moved to Edna in 1999 to be close to her children and grandchildren. The last four years she has been a resident at Southbrooke Nursing Home.

Mrs. Powers is preceded in death by an infant daughter; her husband, Ira W. Powers; a brother and a sister.

Survivors include son, W.A. “Billy” Davis and his wife Carol of Edna; daughter, Doris D. Farquhar of Edna; four grandsons and four great-grandchildren.

Johnny Shorter

Funeral services for Johnny Lee Shorter, 56, of Bonus, were held Saturday at Sand Ridge Baptist Church in Egypt with Rev. A.C. Gardner and Rev. Coby Shorter Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Sand Ridge Cemetery.

Mr. Shorter died Feb. 15, 2006. He was born July 29, 1949, to Dolly and Dan Shorter Sr. in Wharton County.
He joined Sand Ridge Baptist Church at an early age and remained a member there. Mr. Shorter was ordained a deacon in 1979 and also served as church treasurer. He attended Bonus Elementary School and graduated from Hungerford High School in 1967. Mr. Shorter was employed by Imperial Sugar for 24 years.

Mr. Shorter was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ernest Lee Shorter.

Survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law, Johnathan and Bobbie Shorter, Dan and Pat Shorter Jr. and Sherman and Regina Shorter; sisters and brother-in-law, Evada Shaw and Savannah and Alex Gardner; and a number of nieces and nephews, one great-nephew, aunts, uncles and other relatives.

Brandi Ward

Brandi Nicole Ward was born Dec. 30, 1980, in Wharton. After a courageous battle with a brain tumor, Miss Ward entered Heaven on Feb. 17, 2006.

She was reared in East Bernard and attended East Bernard Independent School District, where she participated in athletics, UIL, 4-H and band. Miss Ward was a member of the First United Methodist Church in East Bernard. Graduating from Texas A&M University in 2003, she began her teaching career in Bryan and spent the last two years teaching kindergarten at East Bernard Elementary. Her love of teaching is evident in the many young lives she has touched and her legacy will live in the children that she loved so dearly.

She is survived by her mother, Marguerite Ward, and her sister, Jamie Ward, both of East Bernard. She is also survived by her grandparents, Jim and Patricia Caraway of East Bernard; aunts and uncles, Kenny and Dinah Ward of Wallis, Rudy and Bonnie Hibbeler of Jewett, Augie and D.J. Sommers of Wallis, Donna and Jay Newsom of Marble Falls, Robbin and Roberta Ward of Snook; great-aunt, Twyla Kellogg of Victoria; cousins, Rose Caraway, Dink and Amanda Weeks, Nathan Ward, Jason and Monica Ward, Britney Hibbeler, Sierra and Savannah Sommers, Macy Ward, Wendy Tankersley, Quinton Quiros, Suzy Hickerson, Jayda Ward, Caitlin Ward and Aaron Ward-Weeks. Miss Ward is also survived by special friends, Sheree Beal, Holly Wagner, Sabrina Duffy, Lorie Hicks, Amy Viertel, Emilie Naiser, Rachel Bosworth, Shae Stelzel, Sandra and Brannon Dusek, Danny and Cindy Gertson, Mike and Mickie Farrell, Roland and Shirley Orsak, Mark and Rita Jochec, and many, many other good friends.

Miss Ward was welcomed into Heaven by her Daddy, Ronald Dale Ward. Others there to greet her were John B. and Penny Ward, and her great-grandparents Elmer and Rita Stone.

Pallbearers were Chris Young, Dustin Guthman, Jarrod Beal, Tanner Stade, Nathan Ward, Jamie Reber, Daniel Gertson and Christopher Gertson.

Honorary pallbearers were Miss Ward’s students and little friends from school, and her “adopted” children, Catie, Colin and Quinn Dusek.

A scholarship fund has been set up in Brandi’s memory at Amegy Bank, East Bernard, TX 77435. The family has asked that any memorials be made to the Brandi Ward Memorial Scholarship.

Thies Autry

Funeral services for Thies B. Autry, 52, of Needville, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Greater New Prospect Baptist Church in Needville with Rev. A.I. Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Thursday.
Mrs. Autry died May 26, 2006, at her residence. She was born June 26, 1953, in Wharton to Otis and Ellen Edwards Brooks.

Survivors include mother, Ellen Brooks Egypt; husband, Calvin Autry of Needville; daughters, Natalie Jack and Shari Watson, both of Needville; brothers, Otis Brooks of Egypt and Davy Brooks of Houston; sisters, Genniffer Moore of Richmond, Carol Aldridge of Kendleton, Joyce Jackson and Kayland Jones, both of Wharton; and three grandchildren.
