Byron Mariner
Byron Edison Mariner, age 99, of Cooper, formally of Wharton, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at his residence. He was born on Sept. 16, 1907, son of the late Phillip and Effie Mariner of Corona, N.M.
Mr. Mariner was a resident of Wharton for many years. He married Kittie Zelle Strickland of Richland Springs. Mr. Mariner was known in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana as a pecan grower and an authority on pecans. For many years, he not only planted and grew pecans but was a nurseryman, farmer and a restaurant owner in Wharton.

He had many hobbies, but mostly he enjoyed fishing and woodworking. Survivors include his son, Glenn Mariner and wife Kathy of Cooper; son-in-law; Marcus Melnar of Wharton; grandchildren, Linda Potter and husband Richard of Boling, Garland Melnar of Wharton, Sandra Craig and husband Jeff of Wheeling, W.V.; great-grandchildren; Kyle Clark of Boling, Jeffery Craig, of Wheeling, W.V., Heather Melnar of Wharton and Hollie Melnar of Baytown.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Mariner was preceded in death by his wife, Kittie Zelle Mariner; daughter, Marie Ann Melnar; brothers, Crawford Mariner and Howard Mariner; and sister, Doty Mariner.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 11, at 10:30 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with reception following.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 204 Second St., Wharton, TX 77488; or American Heart Association, P.O. Box 15186, Austin, TX 78761.

Corey Boyer

Funeral services for Corey Ebau Boyer, 29, of Sand Ridge community, will be held at 11 a.m. today at Sand Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. C. Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Ridge Cemetery.

Mr. Boyer died Oct. 29, 2006, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born May 17, 1977, in Houston to Frankie M. and Rita Blunston Jr.

Survivors include father, Frankie M. Boyer Jr. of Woodhill, Calif.; mother, Rita Jackson of Sealy; daughter, Chaudie E. Jackson of Sealy.

Bryant Compean

Funeral services for U.S. Army Pfc. Bryant Christopher Compean, 19, of El Campo, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in El Campo with Rev. Rick DuBroc and Rev. Lawrence Matula officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Triska Funeral Home.

Mr. Compean died on Oct. 25, 2006, from injuries sustained in training incident in Arizona. He was born on May 21, 1987, in Pasadena.

He was a graduate of El Campo High School class of 2005 where he served as a Derby Doll Escort. He enlisted in the US Army in January 2006 and completed basic and advanced infantry training at Fort Benning, Ga., and obtained the position of squad leader on May 19, 2006. He was stationed at Fort Lewis and had been awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Medal.

He received a promotion from Pvt. 2 to Private First Class posthumously.
He is survived by his parents, Paul and Iris Pita Smith of El Campo; sister, Amber Smith of El Campo; brother, Mason Smith of El Campo; paternal grandparents, Carl and Marjorie Steubing of Deer Park; and maternal grandfather Reynaldo Pita of Monterrey, Mexico.
Burial with full military honors under the auspices of Fort Sam Houston Honor Guard will be at the Holy Cross Memorial Park Cemetery in El Campo.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pfc. Bryant Compean Scholarship Fund, C/O 1st State Bank, El Campo Branch, 1808 W. Loop, El Campo, TX 77437.

Elsie Dobesh

Funeral services for Elsie Hinze Dobesh, 86 of East Bernard, were held Tuesday in the Chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. Burial followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. Rev. Gilbert Olivarez officiated the services.

She was born Jan. 7, 1920, in Brenham, to Leo and Louise Schumacher Hinze. Mrs. Dobesh worked for East Bernard Independent School District for more than 20 years until her retirement. She died Oct. 28, 2006, in Wharton.

Mrs. Dobesh is preceded in death by her husband, Louis Dobesh; parents; son, Darwin Dobesh and her sister, Lillie Krueger.

She is survived by children, Eloise Vacek, Shirley Bohacek and husband, Ronnie, and Larry Dobesh; seven grandchildren and five grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

James Edwards

James William Edwards, age 82, of Boling, formerly of Huntsville, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, in a Houston hospital following an extended illness. He was born on Feb. 6, 1924, in Bragg, Okla., the son of the late William Lafayette Edwards and Julia Plunkett Edwards.

Mr. Edwards was reared in Boling and attended school there. From April 30, 1943, until Jan. 8, 1946, he served his country in the United States Navy. Mr. Edwards worked for Texas Gulf Sulfur as an airplane mechanic for 36 years, retiring in 1982. On Dec. 31, 1969, he married Ruth Anna Ramos in Houston. Mr. Edwards has lived in Boling for the past two years. He was a member of the Church of Christ and the Wharton Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers.

Following cremation, private family memorial services will be held at a later date.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Anna Edwards of Boling; daughters, Barbara Jean Bickham and husband, Burlis, of Boling and Sherry Lynn Ridley and husband, Larry, of Webster; and son, James Dale Edwards and wife, Bev, of Richmond; grandchildren, Amber Renee Odle and husband, Tom, Burlis Chad Bickham and wife, Laura, Lauren Ashley Ridley and Justin Colin Edwards, and great-grandchildren, Kassie, Devyn, Alex, Kade, Sydney, Olivia, Laelah and Percy.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the American Red Cross or a charity of personal choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Dr. Lloyd Jones

Dr. Lloyd Clark “Ace” Jones, 81, is lovingly remembered by his family, colleagues, and friends after passing on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006 from respiratory failure. Dr. Jones was born on Feb. 4, 1925, in Houston, to Christopher Lloyd Jones and Anne Gifford Jones. He was reared in Wharton, where he lived at the time of his death with his adored wife of 31 years, Catherine Jones.

Dr. Jones graduated high school from the Texas military Institute in San Antonio in 1942. He then went on to become the youngest ensign in the U.S. Navy, where he captained a landing craft and was training in the Navy underwater SEAL program at the end of World War II in 1945. From 1945 to 1951, he received his undergraduate and medical education at Rice University, Louisiana State University, and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston from where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1951. He undertook his medical internship from 1951 to 1952 at Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston.

From 1952 to 1955, he completed his internal medicine residency and infectious disease fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. He established his medical practice with his Associate, William Morse “Mo” Hicks in Victoria, where they practiced together for more than 40 years. Dr. Jones was an adjunct professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, and also served as chief of staff at Citizens Memorial Hospital in Victoria. Patients and colleagues remember him as an exceptionally dedicated, talented and compassionate physician, and his excellent medical care bettered the lives of countless individuals.

Dr. Jones worked with the Office of Hearing and Appeals for more than 30 years, where he was dearly loved and highly respected for his expertise in the field of medicine. He initiated the physician assistant program in Victoria and was the first physician in specialized medicine to come to Victoria.

Aside from his dedication to his family and medical career, Dr. Jones loved the sea and was an avid sportsman, sailor and fisherman. The center of his heart was, and will always be, in the water surrounding Port O’Connor, where he developed St. Christopher’s Haven Marina, and, where his ashes will be scattered on the bay.

He is survived by his beloved wife Catherine Jones; his children, Derek Jones, MD, from Los Angeles, Calif.; Randolph Jones, Christopher Jones, Susanne Jones, David Lindsey and Penny Pavlica, residing in Texas; his sister, Priscilla Shand from Colorado, and loving nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The primary memorial service will be held for friends and family at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at Trinity Episcopal Church located at 1501 N. Glass in Victoria. A secondary service will follow in Wharton at a later date to be announced.

Arrangements are under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home.

Helen Martin

Funeral services for Helen Marie Martin, 82, of Pledger, were held Monday at the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Willard Hill officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Martin died Oct. 27, 2006, in Sugar Land, following a lengthy illness. She was born on May 9, 1924 in Hungerford, daughter of the late Herman Scholz and Lydia Planka Scholz.

She was reared in the Hungerford area and attended school there. Mrs. Martin was a former resident of Freeport and lived in the Pledger area since 1981.

She retired from Brazosport ISD where she worked as a manager of the cafeteria and from Van Vleck ISD where she was a school bus driver. She married Clarence Boyd “C.B.” Martin on June 3, 1943, in Wharton. He preceded her in death on March 15, 2003. Mrs. Martin was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pledger.

Survivors include daughter, Sandra Siegel and husband, Paul, of Lane City; sons, Ted Martin and wife, Melody, of Brazoria and Bobby Martin and wife, Sandra, of Beaumont; sisters, Genieve Shedyak of Hallettsville and Bernice James of Bay City; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Pablo Ramirez

Funeral services for Pablo S. Ramirez Sr., 92, of El Campo, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at St. Robert’s Catholic Church in El Campo. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Wheeler Funeral Home.

Mr. Ramirez died Oct. 29, 2006. He was born Feb. 2, 1914, in Galeana, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, to Miguel and Eusebia Salazar Ramirez.

He was a retired farm laborer and grounds keeper. Mr. Ramirez was a member of St. Robert’s Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Manuela Vallejo Ramirez; his brothers and sisters.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Gilbert and Delia Ramirez of Clute and Pablo “Paul” and Chris Ramirez of Cedarburg, Wis.; daughters and sons-in-law, Sylvia and Margarito Cervantez Jr. of Wharton and Juanita “Janie” and Henry Delgado Jr. of El Campo; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Bertha Brown

Bertha Eva “Avie” Brown passed away peacefully at her home in Houston on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, at the age of 89 years. Mrs. Brown was born to parents Sandor and Bertha Doszpoly Horvath in Westfield on Oct. 21, 1917. She was a longtime resident of Pledger, where she met her husband, Ernest Wesley Brown, who she married Nov. 29, 1939. They enjoyed 44 years of marriage until his passing in 1984.

Mrs. Brown was deeply committed to her family, and was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandma and great-grandma. She was a devout member of Pledger Baptist Church with a deep and abiding faith in God and Jesus Christ.

Mrs. Brown enjoyed gardening and derived great pleasure from tending her roses and other beautiful flowers. She was a wonderful cook, particularly of dishes and desserts from her parents’ native Hungary.

Mrs. Brown also was an accomplished seamstress, spending countless enjoyable hours designing and sewing for her children and grandchildren. Her gentle, caring nature, ever-present smile and easy laughter will be missed by all the lives she touched.

She is survived by her daughter, Bertha Rudin and husband Fred of Houston; by her son, Ernest Sandor Brown and wife Lori of Houston; by her grandchildren, Michael Rudin and wife Julia of Houston, Michelle Sebesta and husband Jim of Richmond, Sharyl Taylor and husband Kent of Houston, Andrew Brown, Erin Brown and Bethany Brown, all of Houston; great-grandchildren, David Klen, Caitlin Rudin, Skye Rudin and Cameron Rudin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Johnny Horvath and Edward Horvath; and sisters, Pearl Horvath and Louise Galloway.

Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 31, at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Willard Hill officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City.

Theodore Jablonski

Funeral services for Theodore “Ted” Jablonski, 83, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg.

Fr. Dominic Boasiako will officiate the services. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. with a rosary being recited at 7:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg.

Mr. Jablonski was born Sept. 9, 1923, in Kyle to Tone and Pauline Kalinowski Jablonski. After serving in World War II in the U. S. Army from 1943 until he was wounded and discharged in 1945, he became a life member of VFW Post No.3903 in Rosenberg and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was also awarded the Purple Heart.

Mr. Jablonski retired from Quantex in 1988 after 30 years of service. He was also a life member of the Fort Bend County Fair Association. Mr. Jablonski passed away Jan. 28, 2007, at Gulf Coast Medical Hospital in Wharton.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Tone and Pauline Jablonski, and a brother, Alex Jablonski.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Margie Batchelor Jablonski of Wharton; son, Theodore “Teddy” Jablonski and wife, Pat, of Rosharon; daughter, Rossana Kettler and husband, Alvin Jr., of Needville; grandchildren, Warren Jablonski and wife, Marilyn, of Palmdale, Calif., Cody Kettler and wife, Gina, of Damon, Kelsey Mach and husband, Steven, of Damon; great-grandchildren, Cody Kettler Jr., John and Jacob Jablonski; along with other relatives and many friends.

Pallbearers will include C.D. Kalinowski, Cody Kettler, Danny Zwahr, Tommy Jablonski, Niki Batchelor and James Jakubec.

Service arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg.
