William Harper
Funeral services for William Riven Harper, 92, former resident of Wharton, known to his friends as “W.R.” or Riven, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Saturday, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness in West Columbia.
Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall. Burial will follow in Cedar Lawn Haven of Rest Cemetery in West Columbia.
A reception will be held after graveside services at the San Jacinto Room in West Columbia.
Mr. Harper died July 2, 2002, at the Angleton-Danbury Hospital in Angleton. He was born in Downing on Oct. 22, 1909, to Nancy Melverdie Pounders and Clearance Clinton Harper.
He became an ordained minister of Jehovah’s Witnesses on July 8, 1936. He served in many missionary assignments in Texas and Louisiana. Mr. Harper has served as an elder in the West Columbia Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses for more than 30 years. Along with his ministry work, he was well known in the community as a self-employed carpenter and painter.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Elsie Melofsky Harper; daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah Jane and Gary Epperson and Susan O’Dell and John Dale Hardesty; son and duaughter-in-law, Joseph William and Judith Harper; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sister, Katherine Williams of Dickinson.

Gloria Parson
Funeral services for Gloria Ann Parson, 69, of El Campo, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Saturday, at Mother Zion Baptist Church with Rev. C.L. Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Callies Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Parson died July 2, 2002. She was born Aug. 14, 1932, in Louise to the late Tommy Long and Lina Perkins.
She was a homemaker and member of Mother Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
Mrs. Parson married Charles A. Parson and he preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughter, Carolyn Haywood of Wharton; sister, Lorenzo Edwards of El Campo; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Juanita Clark
Glen Flora lost its oldest remaining native-born citizen when Juanita Clark died on Sept. 17, 2002. She was born on Sept. 30, 1914, the youngest of four daughters born to Otto Herman Meyer and Lillie Koenig Meyer. Preceding her in death were her three sisters, Elda Meyer Plaster, Sidell Meyer Hansen and Evelyn Meyer Bickley, and a niece, Betty Plaster Bacon.
Mrs. Clark was first employed by the U.S. government during World War II in San Antonio and later reassigned to the Officers’ Receiving Station at a military base in Sebring, Fla. After the war, she was transferred to Grand Prairie, Texas, in the War Assets Administration. After several years, she retired to accept employment with Texas Wesleyan College in Fort Worth as Recorder for the Registrar and an advisor in the veterans’ education program. She remained employed in these positions for 32 years until her retirement June 1, 1980. Glen Flora again became her home at this time.
Mrs. Clark was a member of First United Methodist Church in Wharton. Prior to that she had been a member of Polytechnic Methodist Church in Fort Worth for 35 years. There she was a member of the Co-workers Sunday School Class and president of the class in 1973-1974.
Mrs. Clark is survived by one remaining immediate family member, her nephew Harold E. Bickley of Glen Flora and numerous cousins.
After cremation, there will be a private graveside ceremony at Wharton City Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at First United Methodist Church in Wharton.

Sanford Junious
Funeral services for Sanford Junious Sr., 89, of Beasley, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church in Kendleton with Rev. Leo Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow in Powell Point Cemetery in Kendleton.
Mr. Junious died Sept. 15, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born April 12, 1913, in Columbus to Henry and Nancy Lee Alley Junious.
He worked as a farmer and was Methodist by faith.
Survivors include daughter, Reba Kindred of Stafford; son, Sanford Junious Jr. of Houston; sister, Daisy Jones of Columbus; 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Fermin Patina
Funeral services for Fermin Patina, 54, of West Palm Beach, Fla., are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Patina died Sept. 17, 2002, in West Palm Beach, Fla., after a sudden illness.
Fayetta Strickland
Funeral services for Fayetta Looper Strickland, 82, of Wharton, were held Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Debbie Cenko officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Strickland died Sept. 15, 2002, at her residence. She was born on Jan. 29, 1920, in Wharton County, the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Looper and Sallie Riley Looper.
Mrs. Strickland was a three-year resident of Wharton and a former longtime resident of Sugar Land. She was a former beautician and most recently a cafeteria worker for Alief Independent School District for 15 years until her retirement in 1986. She married Winiford Wayne “Babe” Strickland Sr. on Dec. 27, 1939, in Wharton. He preceded her in death on Feb. 18, 1969. Mrs. Strickland was Presbyterian by faith and she was a former member of the Wharton Chapter of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Ron Strickland Brown of Sugar Land and Vicky Juneau and Willis Beckworth of Gonzales, La.; son and daughter-in-law, Winiford Wayne and Amanda Strickland Jr. of New Orleans, La.; sisters, Melba Meyer of Wharton and Judy Henson of Waco; brother, Faghan Looper of Wharton; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jarva Nixon, and by a grandson, Mark Brown.

James Jackson
Graveside services for James Edward Jackson, 45, of Compton, Calif., will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Powell Point Cemetery with Rev. W. Paul officiating.
Mr. Jackson died Nov. 12, 2002, at his residence. He was born Jan. 20, 1957, in Wharton to Melton Eugene and Madlyn Graves Jackson.
He worked as a carpenter and was Methodist by faith.
Survivors include mother, Madlyn Jackson of Kendleton; sisters, Felicia Craver and Brenda Davis, both of Houston, Sherry Motley of Mebleton, Ga., and Rona Awofeso of Sugar Land; brothers, Nathan Jackson of Atlanta, Ga., and Montague Jackson of Waco.

Virginia Lowe
Virginia Dagmar Lowe, age 94 of Wharton, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 1 3, 2002 in Wharton
following an extended illness. She was born on Oct. 11, 1908, in Fairmont, Minn., the daughter of the late Gus and Mamie Floy Wood Jorgenson.
While volunteering for the USO she met Edward Lowe and married him on May 22, 1946, in Houston. He preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 1994. From 1929 to 1935 she worked for the War Department where she was a private secretary to Gen. Joseph E. Greene, head of Coast and Antiaircraft Artillery, who was a staff officer under Gen. George C. Marshall. After moving to Mackey, she worked as the secretary for the principal of Alabama Road School in Wharton until her retirement. She moved to Wharton in 1961 and was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was a volunteer at SHARE and enjoyed playing bridge.
Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating.
Survivors include son, Michael T. Lowe of Sr. Louis, Mo., and a niece and her husband, Pam and Van O’Quinn of Wharton. She was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.

James Mahavier
James A. “Sonny” Mahavier Jr., 77, of Bay City died Nov. 14, 2002, at Methodist Hospital in Houston. He was born June 6, 1925, in Mt. Pleasant, to the late James A. and Johnnie Jewell Allen Mahavier Sr.
Mr. Mahavier was a resident of Bay City the past year and a former longtime resident of Matagorda and Mt. Pleasant. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Matagorda. He retired in 1982 as an operator from Texas Gulf Sulphur Company with 35 years of service. He was a 55 year member of and past master of the Wharton Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include wife, Dorothy McClung Mahavier; daughter and son-in-law, Gloria Beth and David Crockett; sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael Clyde and Judith Mahavier and John Charles Mahavier, all of Bay City; sister, Beth Petter of Houston; brother, David Mahavier of Spring; two grandchildren, Michael Shawn and wife Ivana Mahavier of Houston and Michelle Pena and husband Nick of Houston; and two great- grandchildren:, Nickie and Sky Pena of Houston.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at First Baptist Church of Matagorda with Reverends Oliver Southall and C.J. Molmen officiating. Burial followed in Matagorda Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Clyde Hauff, Jose Martinez, Alan Dalyrmple, Jimmy Brannon, Mac Hill and Frank Cooke.

Wilber Mitchell
Funeral services for Wilber Jackson “Pee Wee” Mitchell, 78, of El Campo, were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo with Rev. Rick DuBroc officiating. Entombment will be made in the Swedish Lutheran Cemetery.
Mr. Mitchell died Nov. 14, 2002. He was born May 17, 1924, in Lakeview Community to the late Dan and Minnie Mitchell.
He married Erma Frazier Waters on Dec. 31, 1949. Mr. Mitchell was a retired deputy sheriff with 19 years of service to Wharton County having served under Sheriff Mike Flournoy as chief deputy. He graduated from Crescent High School, was a member of First Baptist Church and a past member of the Elks Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Wade Waters.
Survivors include wife, Erma Mitchell of El Campo; step-sons and step-daughter-in-law, Bobby Ray Waters of El Campo and Wayne and Susan Waters of Waters; and sister, Hallie Mae Mitchell Johnston of El Campo; grandchildren Kenny Waters and wife Kelly of Rosenberg, Shirley “Tito” Waters Nelson and husband Brian of Alvarado, Wendy Waters Garner and husband Kelly of League City, Carolyn Waters Bubela and husband Brent of Houston, Robin Waters of College Station, Crystal Bard Bacak and husband Brad of Beasley and J.T. Bard of El Campo; great-grandchildren, Kaiti, Kelcie and Kent Waters of Rosenberg, Tatum Nelson of Alvarado and Amber Bard of El Campo.

Erma Mitchell
Erma Estell Mitchell of El Campo passed away on Sept. 12, 2006, at the age of 85. She was born on June 10, 1921, in Glen Flora to the late Ellison and Lottie Cromeans Frazier.
She is survived by her sons Wayne Waters and wife Susan of Wharton and Bobby Ray Waters of El Campo; daughter, Rhonda Mitchell of El Campo; seven grandchildren, Wendy Garner, Carolyn Bubela, Robin Waters, Kenny Waters, Shirley Nelson, Crystal Baca and J.T. Bard; and nine great-grandchildren, Cage Garner, Zane Garner, Kate Bubela, Katlyn Waters, Kelsey Waters, Kent Waters, Tatum Nelson, Zane Thurmond and Amber Thurmond.
She is preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Ed Ray Waters; and second husband, PeeWee Mitchell; brother, Marion “Punkin” Frazier; and grandson, Wade Waters.
Visitation began on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at noon at Triska Funeral Home. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, at the funeral home.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, Sept. 15, 2006, at 2:30 p.m. at Triska Funeral Home with Rev. Rick DuBroc officiating.
Pallbearers were Kenny Waters, Brad Baca, Brent Bubela, Kelly Garner, J.T. Bard and Brian Nelson.
Honorary pallbearers were Raymond Zbitowsky and Tom Welfel.
Entombment was held at Swedish Lutheran Cemetery.

Johnnie Muse
Funeral services for Mrs. Johnnie Muse, 72, of Wharton will be held at Stroud Funeral Home in Clute on Monday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in the Restwood Cemetery in Lake Jackson.
Friends may call for visitation Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Muse died Aug. 3, 2006 in a Houston hospital following a brief illness.
Charles Myers
Funeral services for Charles Culberson, Myers, 57, of Spanish Camp, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Camp Zion-Rising Star United Baptist Church with Rev. B. Sanford officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Friends may call after 1 p.m.
Mr. Myers died Sept. 13, 2006, at his residence. He was born Nov. 11, 1948, in Wharton to John and Catherine Hawks Myers.
Survivors include wife, Patricia Ann Smith Myers of Spanish Camp; sons, Charles C. Myers II, Sonny Smith and Malcolm Smith, all of Wharton; daughters, Alicia and husband Richard Coleman, Andrea Myers, Adrian and husband Brian Alameda and Anitra and husband Gardner Myers, all of Wharton; sisters, Vernita Scott of East Bernard, Ann Anderson of Wharton and Jacqueline Bailey of Houston; and 17 grandchildren.
