Julia Shannon

Funeral services for Julia Mae Shannon, 79, of Spanish Camp were held Monday at Camp Zion Rising Star Baptist Church with Rev. C. Owens Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Ridge Cemetery.

Mrs. Shannon died Nov. 14, 2002, at East Houston Regional Medical Center. She was born Sept. 4, 1923, in Wharton to William and Cora Washington Wygal.

Survivors are: husband, Johnnie Shannon of Spanish Camp; daughter, Johnnie Lemons of Houston; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.

J.B. Spears

Funeral services for J.B. Spears, 63, of East Bernard were held Tuesday at Greater New Faith Church in Wallis with Rev. C. Spears officiating. Burial followed in Powell Point Cemetery in Kendleton.

Mr. Spears died Nov. 15, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Oct. 2, 1939, in Wharton to Clyde and Emma Scott Spears Sr.

Survivors include wife, Billie Jean Richardson Spears of East Bernard; sons, Scott and Troy Richardson, both of Kendleton; daughters, Lisa Oliver of East Bernard, Debra McCall of Huntsville, Cynthia Roberson of Houston and Terri Lynn Jones of Compton, Calif.; brothers, Clyde Spears Jr. of Richmond, Charles Spears of Houston and Sam Shelton of Wallis; sisters, Thelma Hayes and Bertha Sowell, both of East Bernard, Emma Richards of Kendleton, Corine Tumor of Altair and Stella White of Houston; 22 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mary Ziegenhals

Graveside services for Mary Beth Ziegenhals, 84, of El Campo, were held Tuesday at Hawley Cemetery with Rev. Keith Gibbons officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Triska Funeral Home in El Campo.

Mrs. Ziegenhals died Nov. 16, 2002. She was born Aug. 1, 1918, in Wharton to the late C.E. and Ida Damron Jopling.

She was a housewife and her husband, Oscar Ziegenhals, preceded her in death on Oct. 21, 1985. Mrs. Ziegenhals was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, El Campo Garden Club, Women’s Club, Wharton County Historical Commission and was a past director for the Blessing Cup.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Ronnie Schubert of Fedor; sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Frances Ziegenhals of Wharton, Bill and Cindy Ziegenhals of El Campo, Allen and Martha Ziegenhals of El Campo and Lee and Anita Ziegenhals of Boerne; sister, Jeanette Gardner of Tomball; grandchildren, Courtney Sanderson, Karl Ziegenhals, Adam Ziegenhals, Robert Alford, Dustin and Sean Foster and Liesl Ziegenhals; great-grandchild, Bradley Alford. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Fred Ziegenhals; brothers, C.E. Jopling Jr. and Tom Jopling.

Edna Kassler

Funeral services for Edna Kassler, age 92, of Damon, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Needville with the Rev. Fred Banda officiating. Burial will follow in Needville Public Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers are John Dietz, Warren Smalley, Marvin Mesecke, Ernest Mesecke Jr., Alton Mesecke, and Marvin Preuss.

Mrs. Kassler passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Oct. 25, 1910, in Needville to parents, Ernst and Jane Heuvel Mesecke.

She and her husband, Otto Kassler, farmed cotton most of their lives. She owned the Farmerette Cafe in Damon and was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Vernon Gorka, and a son, Curtis Kassler.
Her grandchildren, Carla Dietz and husband John of Seattle, Wa.; Jimmy Kassler and wife, Sharon, of Arlington; Janet Smalley and husband Warren, of Friendswood; and Harlan Kassler of Austin, survive her. She is also survived by her beloved great-grandchildren, Breanna, Sarah and Andrew Dietz; Devon and Katie Kassler and Sheldon, Hailey and Cierra Smalley and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel United Church of Christ, 9018 Church St., Needville, Texas 77461.

Funeral services are under the direction of Garmany & Carden Funeral Directors, Inc., 3103 School St., in Needville.

Adeline Kughn

Funeral services for Adeline T. Kughn, 82, of Wharton are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Kughn died March 21, 2003, in Hillje.

Alice Maloy

Funeral services for Alice Ruth Bunch Maloy, 58, of Wharton, were held Friday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Don Hurley officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Maloy died March 18, 2003, in a Houston hospital following an extended illness. She was born on May 13, 1944, in Stevenson, Ala., the daughter of Charles Luther Bunch and Allie Pearl Johnson Bunch.

She had been a resident of Wharton since 1975 and was a member of College Heights Baptist Church in Wharton. She married James V. Maloy on Jan. 3, 1974, in Boling. Mrs. Maloy helped her husband at Dairy Queen in Wharton. She was preceded in death by her step-father, Lloyd C. James; and brother, Charles Luther Bunch Jr.

Survivors include her husband, James Maloy of Wharton; daughters and step-daughters, Yvonne Karlette Pfertner of Round Rock, Lori Lynnette Mata of Wharton, Cheryl Wolcott of Marietta, Ga., Candace Hays of Dripping Springs, Dawna Maloy of Austin and Tammy Payne of Bullard; mother, Allie Pearl James of Boling; father, Charles Luther Bunch Sr. of Ohio; sisters, Carolyn Gerdes of Boling and Sheila Sanor of Alliance, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to College Heights Baptist Church, P.O. Box 106, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Catarino Vega

Funeral services for Catarino M. Vega Jr., 88, of Temple, were held Wednesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Tuesday at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Vega died March 17, 2003, in Temple. He was born on Nov. 27, 1914, in Victoria, the son of the late Catarino Vega Sr. and Dolores Molina Vega.

He married Angelita Carrillo in 1939 in Victoria and she preceded him in death on Jan. 8, 1993. He was employed as an electrician for the Forester Air Force Base in Victoria and the Todd Shipyard in Galveston. He also worked in the maintenance department of the Brazosport High School and as a building engineer for the El Monte School District in El Monte, Calif., until his retirement in 1970. He attended St. Lukes Catholic Church in Temple.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia Campos and husband, Alonzo of Temple; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Rodriguez of Manitoba, Can., Catarino Vega III and wife, Joanmarie of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ramon Vega and wife, Doris of La Puente, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel Vega Salinas; son, Geronimo Vega; sister, Ester Cervantes and brother, Ted Vega.

Edwin Hanzelka

Mr. Edwin Alois Hanzelka Sr., age 90, of Rosenberg, and a former longtime resident of Hungerford, died Thursday, May 1, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born on Sept. 29, 1912, in Smithville, the son of the late Joseph Hanzelka and Emilie Polasek Hanzelka.
Mr. Hanzelka had been a resident of Hungerford for many years until moving to Rosenberg in 1994. He married Mary Antonio Haas on Oct. 20, 1941, in Weimar, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 15, 1986. Three brothers and two sisters also preceded him in death. Mr. Hanzelka was a farmer and worked for J.D. Hudgins, Inc. until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford. Mr. Hanzelka was also a member of the SPJST and the KJT. He was an avid Astros fan. He loved to garden, play dominoes and work word-find puzzle books. He also loved playing his accordion.

Friends may call for visitation after 4 p.m. Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2003, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Gladys and Dick Laxton of Rosenberg and Catherine and Richard Harris of Wharton; son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Shirley Hanzelka Jr. of Rosenberg; sister-in-law, Frances Hanzelka of East Bernard; grandchildren, Kevin Harris, Diana Prihoda, Dana Ezell, Dawn Meynier, Robert Meynier Jr., Amanda Hanzelka and Cristy Hanzelka; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Harris, Kenny Prihoda, James Ezell, Robert Meynier Jr., Eric Palacios and Kevin Wolff.

Honorary Pallbearers are all of his great-grandchildren.

If desiring, memorials may be sent to St. John’s Catholic Church, P.O. Box 121, Hungerford, Texas 77448.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Ellen Kennedy

Funeral services for Ellen Kennedy, 88, of Bonus, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Kennedy died May 1, 2003, in a Sugar Land hospital following an extended illness. She was born in Travis County on Aug. 5, 1914, the daughter of the late Thomas William Jenkins and Olivia Bandy Jenkins.

She had been a resident of Bonus for the past 10 years and was a former longtime resident of Wharton. Mrs. Kennedy worked as a nurse’s aide until her retirement in 1987. She married Gerald Albert Kennedy on March 29, 1940, in Wharton and he preceded her in death on March 21, 1987. Mrs. Kennedy was also preceded in death by a daughter, Wilma Wise, 12 brothers and sisters, two grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was a member of Peace Tabernacle Church in Wharton.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Geraldine Waller of Bonus, Sue and Bobby Caldwell and Martha and Wayne Frankum, all of Wharton, and Valrie and Larry Gann of El Campo; son and daughter-in-law, Gerald Wayne and Patricia Kennedy of Wharton; brother, Leonard Jenkins of Breckenridge; 18 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be her son and grandsons.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Charles Svatek

Charles F. Svatek, age 74 of Wharton, died Wednesday April 30, 2003, in Wharton. He was born on Oct. 11, 1928, in Flatonia, the son of the late Adolph Svatek and Annie Tupa Svatek.

Mr. Svatek was a Wharton resident for more than 50 years and a former resident of Flatonia, Iago and El Campo. He married Helen M. Buenger on May 30, 1951, in Wharton. She preceded him in death on June 21, 1999. Mr. Svatek was employed as a maintenance technician for the Texas State Highway Department for 25 years until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, KJZT, Wharton American Legion Post No. 87 and was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was a former CYO sponsor. Mr. Svatek enjoyed gardening, cooking and attending his grandchildrens’ special events.

Funeral mass services will be held 10 a.m. today, Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating.Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by the Wharton American Legion. Wake services were held at 7 p.m. Friday at the Wharton Funeral Home.

Survivors include his daughter, Patrice Volek of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Lee and Linda Svatek of Sugar Land, Dale and Rita Svatek of Needville; sisters, Mary Jane Foyt of Victoria, Angie Cummings of Sweeny, Lorraine Roesler of Bryan; brothers, Frankie Svatek and Bernard Svatek, both of Wharton; grandchildren, Jessica Volek, Chris Svatek, Raeven Hoover, David Hoover, Trey and Candacy Hoover with expected great-grandchild, Fayth Alyse Hoover.

Pallbearers are Kenny Roesler, Richard Ramsower, Daniel Buenger Jr., Carlile Pond, David Wynand and Ed Baca.

Honorary pallbearers are Robert Svatek, Timmy Carle and all members of the Wharton Knights of Columbus.

If desiring, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 204 2nd Street Wharton, Texas 77488; Hospice Support Care, 1102 N. Mechanic, El Campo, Texas 77437; or to the Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation.

Annie Joost

Funeral services for Annie Mae Joost, 82, of La Grange, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in La Grange with Rev. Robert Groenke officiating. Burial will follow in La Grange City Cemetery.

Mrs. Joost died Nov. 8, 2003, in La Grange. She was born on March 29, 1921, in Warrenton to Fritz and Martha Tiedt Havemann.

She married Milton Joost on June 3, 1940, in Victoria and he preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1996. Mrs. Joost was a homemaker and Lutheran by faith. She was a member of Sons of Hermann Lodge No. 238.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Victor Sylvia of San Antonio; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Wrenda Joost of Plum, Robert and Virginia Joost of Victoria, Larry and Kim Joost of Plum, David and Sheryl Joost of Wharton, Wesley and Elizabeth Joost of Lubbock and Darryl and Glenda Joost of Plum; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Freddy Ullmann

Frederick Paul “Freddy” Ullmann, age 60, of Wharton died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born on May 9, 1943, in Wharton the son of the late Louis Oscar Ullmann and Annie Wendel Ullmann.

Mr. Ullmann was a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. He graduated from Wharton High School in 1963 and attended Wharton County Junior College. Mr. Ullmann married Patricia Louann Hunt on July 31, 1965, in Freeport. He was a farmer and rancher all of his life and served on the Wharton County Youth Fair Board. Mr. Ullmann was active in Wharton Girls Softball League as a coach, manager and past president.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Monday at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday Nov. 11, 2003, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Ullmann of Wharton; daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Bryan Janda of El Campo; son and daughter-in-law, Clayton and Donna Ullmann of Wharton; sisters, Mary Hartfield of Needville, Anna Chumchal and Loraine Dusek of Wharton and Kathryn Kainer of El Campo; brother, Irvin Ullmann of Wharton; grandchildren, Kevin Hamby, Staci Paul, Traci Paul, Christopher Janda and Matthew Janda; his dog Sparky; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Pallbearers were Darlyn Polak, Sharon Stehno, Barbara Schoelberg, Kevin Hamby, Stephen Ullmann, Marvin Hartfield, Peggy Sherrill and Alton Hartfield.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Donnie Mahaltic, Butch Stolle, Laddie Prihoda and Sidney Triche and all of his nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to the Charity of your Choice.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.
