Funeral services for Agnes M. Pilcik Chmelik, 85, of East Bernard, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery in East Bernard. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and a rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Mrs. Chmelik died Jan. 29, 2004, in Wharton. She was born March 2, 1918, in Fort Bend County to the late Frank and Josephine Laitkap Pilcik.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester Chmelik; parents; daughter, Angela Svoboda; and grandchildren, Lori Chmelik and Coy Helton.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Joe Chmelik of East Bernard, John and Donna Chmelik of Wharton and Charlie and Patricia Chmelik of East Bernard; daughters and sons-in-law, Lillie Palmer of Alvin, Martha and Edward Kanak of Wallis, Josephine Helton of Alvin and Doris and Craig Pietzsch of Tomball; brother, Pete Pilcik of East Bernard; sister, Lillian Pilcik of East Bernard; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Carlos Jackson
Funeral services for Carlos Edward Jackson Sr., 82, of Wharton will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Hatton officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Zion Cemetery.
Mr. Jackson died Jan. 28, 2004, at Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct. 24, 1921, in Pledger to Ishman and Ollistine Spradley Jackson.
Survivors include wife, Mildred Runnels Jackson of Wharton; sons, Carlos Jackson Jr. of San Antonio, Michael Jackson of Austin and Vernon Jackson of Beaumont.; sisters, Leola Roberson and Leotis Hanchett, both of Port Arthur; 6 grandchild and 3 great-grandchildren.
Ann Ponder
Funeral services for Ann Ponder, 82, of Wharton, were held Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary service was held Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Ponder died Jan. 28, 2004 after battling Alzheimer’s Diease. She lived the past seven years with her daughter Bobbie Hajovsky and family in Rosenberg. She was born on July 12, 1911, in Weimar, the daughter of the late Alois and Rosalie Macha Svetlik.
She married Robert Compton Ponder on Feb. 22, 1934, in Galveston and he preceded her in death on Feb. 6, 1985. Mrs. Ponder was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and the Holy Family Altar Society.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Lou Ann and Richard Vasek of Starkville, Miss., Mildred and David Sanders of Jackson, Miss., Jo and Jimmy Edwards of Ethel, Miss, and Bobbie and Tim Hajovsky of Rosenberg; brothers, Ray Svetlik and Willie Svetlik, both of Bay City; 19 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, three sisters, three brothers and one great-grandson.

Memorial services for Benjamin Morris Shoaf, 77, of Kendleton, were held 7 p.m. Friday at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home with Rev. M. Gray officiating.
Mr. Shoaf died Jan. 24, 2004, at Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Austin to George and Ezetta Harris Shoaf.
Survivors include sons, Oscar Shoaf of Wharton and Rev. Louis Cole of East Bernard; daughter, Marla Shoaf of Kendleton; sisters, Joyce M. Rector, Blanche Miller, Charity Cooper, all of Houston, and Patty Shoaf of Los Angeles, Calif.
Obbie Tisdale
Funeral services for Obbie Tisdale, 86, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Mother Zion Baptist Church with Rev. C.L. Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Scott Cemetery.
Mr. Tisdale died Jan. 28, 2004, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born July 2,1917 in Wharton to Sam and Rebecca Bryant Tisdale.
Survivors include wife, Luveria Scott Tisdale of Wharton; daughters, Jeralean Money and Flora Tisdale, both of Pearland; brothers, Otto Tisdale and Nolan Tisdale, both of Wharton; sister, Edith Jackson of Wharton; 3 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Melba Anderson
Funeral services for Melba Ann Anderson, 69, of Lake Jackson, will be held 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Alex Lupo officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call for visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Saturday, at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Anderson died March 17, 2004, in a Lake Jackson hospital. She was born on Dec. 6, 1934, in Longview, the daughter of the late Edward and Laura Ruth Kennedy Ware.
She married Darrel Anderson on March 17, 1957. He preceded her in death on Aug. 23, 1980. She was a former resident of Wharton, Pledger and Freeport.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Derwood and Gail Anderson of Corpus Christi, Darren and Teresa Anderson of Sweeny and Naomi Anderson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry Ware of Van Vleck, Billy and Pat Ware of Van Vleck and Jerry and Juanita Ware of Bay City; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Dennis Anderson; brother, Eddie Ware; and sister, Jean Kirkland.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to a charity specializing in causes for the deaf or a charity of personal choice.
Genevieve McGuire
Genevieve Matula McGuire, age 76, of Wharton, died Thursday, March 18, 2004, in a Wharton hospital following an extended illness. She was born on May 28, 1927, in Hungerford, the daughter of the late Julius C. Matula Sr. and Cecelia Sulak Matula.
Mrs. McGuire graduated from Wharton High School. She married Charles A. McGuire Jr. on May 19, 1951, in Wharton. She was a former resident of Beaumont and had lived in Wharton since 1983. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and a longtime member of the Wharton Country Club where she enjoyed playing golf, mahjong and dominos.
Funeral mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Saturday, March 20, 2004, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Interment will follow in the Wharton City Cemetery.
Survivors include husband, Charles A. McGuire Jr. of Wharton; daughters and son-in-law, Patty and Paul Shannon of Wharton and Debbie McGuire of Houston; son and daughter-in-law, Charles A. McGuire III and wife, Rebecca of LaPorte; sister, Bessie LaVictoire of Washington, N.C.; brother, Julius Matula Jr. of Wharton; and grandchildren, Chase McGuire, Jennifer McGuire and Preston Shannon. She was preceded in death by her brother, Eugene Matula.
Pallbearers will be Chase McGuire, Preston Shannon, Ricky Matula, Paul Shannon, Tommy Matula and David Lawrence.
Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Wharton Country Club Women’s Golf Association.

Bettie Taylor
Funeral services for Bettie A. Taylor, 65, of Kendleton, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Saturday, at Boones Bend Church of God. Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery in Kendleton.
Ms. Taylor died March 17, 2004, at her residence. She was born March 22, 1938, in Wharton County to John Taylor and Lucille Jackson Taylor.
She worked in nursing.
Survivors include siblings, Doris Taylor, Thomas Taylor, Chancy Taylor and Perry Taylor.

Elinda Wetz
Elinda Faye Wetz, 60, of Wharton, died Monday, March 15, 2004, in a Houston hospital. She was born Oct. 7, 1943, in Palestine to Jesse Henry Kidd and Bonnie Faye Cummins Kidd.
Mrs. Wetz grew up in Baytown. She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1962 and married Albert M. Wetz on May 30, 1964, in Wharton. She was a member of Christ Is Life Church and Women’s Aglow, and volunteered at CDC, First Baptist Church in Wharton. She took great pleasure in spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Albert M. Wetz; children, Butch Wetz and wife Amanda, Gaye Mathis and husband Gene and Alice Wetz; mother, Bonnie Kidd; mother-in-law, Betty Wetz; brother, Jesse H. Kidd II and wife Ada; grandchildren, Beau Wetz, Emili Storey, Cheyanne Mathis and Elaina Fuentes-Wetz and numerous members of her extended family.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 19, 2004, at the Christ Is Life Church in Wharton with Rev. Mike Atherton officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Eugene Garza
Eugene Ramirez “Gino” Garza, age 49, of Wharton, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, in a Houston hospital following a brief illness. He was born on Dec. 11, 1954, in Wharton, the son of Albert Garza Jr. and Geneva Ramirez Garza.
Mr. Garza had been a resident of Wharton for the past six years and was a former longtime resident of Boling. He graduated from Boling High School in 1974 and was Catholic by faith. Mr. Garza was employed by the Wharton Independent School District in the maintenance department for the past 2 1/2 years. He married Irma Bermudes on Feb. 15, 1975, in Wharton.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
Survivors include his wife, Irma Garza; daughters and sons-in-law, Nadia Barron and Bubba Matula, Valarie and Antonio Solis III and Regina Garza and Victor Delgado, all of Wharton; parents, Albert and Geneva Garza Jr. of Boling; sisters, Stella Cruz of Denton, Evelyn Pina of Sweeney, Debra Arias and Sandra Gangstad, both of Wharton; brothers, Robert R. Garza of Wharton, Albert Garza III and Kenneth R. Garza, both of Boling; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Pallbearers are Bubba Matula, Antonio Solis III, Victor Delgado, Victor Mata, Jason Gangstad, Brad Barron, Kenneth Garza Jr. and Michael Pina.
Honorary Pallbearers are all members of the Wharton I.S.D. Maintenance Department.

Earnest Gibson
Funeral services for Earnest Gibson Sr., 82, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. M. Gray officiating. Burial will follow in Jake Ford Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Friday.
Mr. Gibson died Jan. 31, 2005, at his residence. He was born Sept. 8, 1922, in Victoria to Patrick and Ivory Johnson Gibson.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Freeman Gibson of Wharton, Lenwood and Geraldine Gibson of El Campo and Tim and Leatha Green of Wharton; daughter, Linda D. Gibson of Wharton; sisters, Versie Brown of San Antonio and Dora Crenshaw of Calif.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Eulalio Quijas
Eulalio “Larry” Quijas, age 61, of Wharton died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, in a Houston hospital following an extended illness. He was born on Dec. 14, 1943, in Newgulf, the son of Antonio Quijas and Trinidad Castillio Quijas.
Mr. Quijas had been a lifelong resident of Wharton County living in Newgulf and Wharton. He worked at Texasgulf Sulphur Company for more than 20 years until his retirement. Mr. Quijas most recently had worked at Maxim Egg Farm. He was a veteran of the Viet Nam Conflict and served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Quijas was a member of Bethel Church CLADIC in Wharton. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and landscaping. Mr. Quijas was preceded in death by his father and by two brothers, Daniel Quijas and Raymond Quijas.
A prayer service was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Joel Ramirez officiating. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Basilio Perez officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with military graveside honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton.
Survivors include his sons, Paul Anthony Longoria of Arcola and Larry Arthur Quijas of Georgia; mother, Trinidad Quijas of Wharton; sisters, Frances Gonzales of Beeville and Mary Elva Quijas of Boling; brothers, Abram “Buddy” Quijas of Tyler and Antonio “Rocky” Quijas of Wharton; grandchildren, Andrew Scott Longoria, Anthony Michael Longoria, Bailey Victoria Longoria and Victoria Quijas.
Pallbearers were Roland Gomez, Richard Gomez, Moe Martinez, Robert Samora, Oscar Diaz and Chris Luna.
Honorary pallbearers were Robert Campos, Robert Lopez, Andy Reyes and Joe Huerta.
