Robert McMicken

Robert Charles “Bob” McMicken Jr., age 49, of Wharton, died Saturday, March 4, 2006, at his residence following a sudden illness.

He was born on Jan. 9, 1957, in Wharton, son of Robert C. McMicken Sr. and Helen Marie Pospisil McMicken.

Mr. McMicken was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford. He was a1976 graduate of Wharton High School and attended Wharton County Junior College. Mr. McMicken married Janice Anne Treybig on May 29, 1982, in Wharton. He worked as a District Sales Manager for Frito Lay Corporation for the past 21 years. He was a former coach in both the Wharton Little League and Wharton Youth Soccer League.

Mr. McMicken was preceded in death by his father and brother, Ronald William McMicken.

A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today, Tuesday evening, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Janice McMicken of Wharton; daughter, Whitney McMicken of Wharton; sons, Jarrett McMicken and Ryan McMicken, both of Wharton; mother, Helen McMicken of Wharton; brothers and sister-in-law, Rodney McMicken of Wharton and Richard and Vickie McMicken of Freeport; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Pallbearers are Ricky McMicken, Leland Treybig Jr., Philip Treybig, David Voulgaris, Mickey Gelber, Raymond Wittig, Aaron Dittmar and Steven Dittmar.
Honorary pallbearers are all Frito Lay Region 6, District No. 639 employees, Freddie Siska, Shawn Wittig, Gene Schumaker, Stanley Kristynik and Mitch Kumaga.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the East Wharton County Heart Association, P.O. Box 226, Wharton, TX 77488; or to St. John’s Catholic Church Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 121, Hungerford, TX 77448.

Funeral services are under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Ann Simmons

Memorial services for Ann Simmons, 69, of Sealy, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, at First Baptist Church in Sealy with Rev. John Morris officiating.

Mrs. Simmons died March 5, 2006, in Sealy. She was born in Paducah to William G. and Jewel Applegate Kirk. She was reared in the Lubbock area.

Mrs. Simmons worked at Fort Bend Feed in Richmond for many years.

Survivors include husband, Jack Simmons of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Dianna and Vincent Lombardi of College Station, Sandra Simmons of Houston, Suzanne and Terry Perralt of Hector, Ark., and Dawn Simmons of Houston; sisters, Sherry Jones of Roanoke and Jackey Wygal of Scottsville, Ark.; twin brothers, Doug Kirk of Idalou and Dennis Kirk of Grandbury; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, William G. “Bill” Kirk.

Alvin Venglar

Rowland “Alvin” Venglar, age 83, of Wharton, died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at his residence. He was born on Feb. 7, 1923, in Fayetteville, the son of the late Paul Peter Venglar and Carrie Cervenka Venglar.

Mr. Venglar was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton and was a member of Wharton Knights of Columbus. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Venglar married Margaret Marie Scholz Venglar on Nov. 21, 1949, in East Bernard and began working for the U.S. Postal Service. He enjoyed gardening and his stained glass hobby.

Rosary services will be held Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at 7 p.m. from the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home. Funeral mass services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 9, 2006, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Joseph Vrana officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his daughters, Catherine Haraldsen and husband, John, of Denison, Yvonne Wrench of Richmond, Mary Ann Skoog of Victoria, and Karen Davis of Brighton, Ma., sons, Thomas Venglar and wife, Caroline, of Aurora, Colo., Paul Venglar and wife, Kim, of Fort Worth, Joe Venglar and Pam Schmidt of Boling, Keith Venglar and wife, Sandy, of Virginia Beach Va., and James Venglar and wife, Mollie of Poland, Ohio; sisters, Lillian Dry of Bay City and Doris Strauss of Caldwell; grandchildren, Kirsten Haraldsen, Peter and Erik Haraldsen, Joseph Aitken, Carrie Venglar Healy, Christina Venglar, Brent McClure, Anthony and Victoria Wrench, Rikki Wilkins, Andrea Venglar, Gideon and Dylan Venglar, Kimberly Mach, Matthew Skoog, Jeremy Davis, Lisa Venglar, Leslie and Zachary Venglar, Emily Venglar, Stacy McClure and Clint Skoog; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Venglar was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Margaret Venglar, and sisters Wilma Strauss, Lydia Price, Martha Carter, Mildred Crosswell and Annie Foyt.

William Mitchell

Following cremation a family gathering will be held at a later date for William “Bill” Mitchell, 58, of East Bernard.

Mr. Mitchell died Oct. 10, 2006, in East Bernard after a lengthy illness. He was born April 9, 1948.
Survivors include wife, Jeannine Mitchell; daughter, Mary Kay Mitchell of Sugar Land; son, and daughter-in-law, W.C. and Danielle Mitchell of East Bernard; and step-sons, Sam Lackey of East Bernard and George Lackey of Dallas.

Hallie Moore

Funeral services for Hallie Moore, 99, of Rosenberg, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Booth with Rev. J. Johnson officiating. Burial will be on Monday at Houston National Cemetery. Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Moore died Oct. 10, 2006, at her residence. She was born Nov.7, 1906, in Rosenberg to Mr. and Mrs. George Jones.

Survivors incude three grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ramon Padia

Ramon Padia went to be with the Lord on Dec. 15, 2006. He was born in Newgulf on May 21, 1932, to Pedro and Josefina Gonzales Padia.

Mr. Padia served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Bremerton during the Korean War.

He passed away from Small Cell Lung Catcinoma and Asbestosis. After serving in the Navy, he worked many years as a heavy equipment operator, a poultry and dairy farmer in Westville, Okla., and worked for the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation and was full of the entrepreneurial spirit.

He has been retired for 12 years.
Mr. Padia married Jo Ann Arthur Bagwell Padia on Sept. 3, 1976. He loved to work on projects, visit the local restaurants, joke with people, travel with his wife and spend time with his family and friends.

Mr. Padia was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Manuel, Larry and Pete, Meliton and Joe Padia; sisters, Mary, Guadalupe and Janie Padia; grandson, Dillion Boyette; and great-grandchild, Ian Robertson.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jo Ann; brother, Tom; sister, Susan Padia; and children, Carolyn Hoyle, Kim Padia Albertson, Johnny Ray Padia and wife Jean, Rita Padia, Price, Martha Bagwell white and husband Robert, Randy Bagwell and wife Brenda, Todd Adams, Wendy Bagwell and James Byron Bagwell and wife Monica.

He is also survived by grandchildren, Tony Hoyle and Cherlyn Hoyle Jenson, Honey and Lacey Nokelby, Wendy and Deana Padia, Danniella Price Pruitt and Doranda Price, Robin and Leigh White, Jamie, Jimmie, Brandi and Ethan Bagwell, Cade, Madeline and Isabella Bagwell; and great-grandchildren, Bryee, Maddy, Dalton and Ashton Hoyle, Katrina Munn, Hank and Case Pruitt, Lia Monet Roberson, Gabriel Studer, Sabrina and Charlie Wilkins and Haileigh Bagwell; numerous nieces and nephews as well as friends.

The family and friends of Mr. Padia would like to say thank you to the Odyssey House at 233 I-45, Conroe, TX 77301.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Odyssey Hospice House.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

The family will received friends afterwards.

Betty Harris

Funeral services for Betty Jean Harris, 61, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at New Faith Church in Wharton. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.

Mrs. Harris died April 10, 2007, at Memorial Hermann Southwest. She was born Dec. 17, 1945, in Fayette County to the late Isadore and Cora Fields Thompson.
She worked as a house keeper and home health provider.

Survivors include daughters, Dian Williams and Delores Harris; brothers, Isadore Thompson Jr. and Clifton Thompson Sr., both of Wharton, and Leroy Thompson Sr. and ReuLehonest Thompson Sr., both of Kendleton; sisters, Minnie P. Jackson, Emma Jean Byars and Barbara Jean Navarro, all of Wharton; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Leah Hodges

Leah Marie Storey Hodges, age 49, of Wharton died Thursday, April 12, 2007, in Wharton. She was born on June 21, 1957, in Houston, daughter of the late Latham C. Storey and Opal P. Alldredge Storey.

Mrs. Hodges was reared in the Houston area and attended school there. She was a resident of Wharton since 2006, formerly residing in Houston and the Rosenberg area. Mrs. Hodges married William E. Hodges on Sept. 25, 1993, and he preceded her in death on May 28, 2003. Mrs. Hodges worked as the office manager for Sanford Brown Educational Center in Houston. She enjoyed going to the movies and dancing and also loved to shop.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today, Saturday, April 14, 2007, at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Quiggins officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include her daughters Laurielea Nesbitt of Rosenberg, Kristen Curry of Channelview, Maegan Curry of Rosenberg and Jeanna Hodges of Brenham; sons, John William Nesbitt Jr. of Rosenberg and William E. Hodges IV of Brenham; sister, Sharon Davis and husband Kenny of Houston; and brother, Rev. Don Storey Sr. of Wharton. Three grandchildren, Shannon Nesbitt, Daniel Salinas and Kayla Nesbitt also survive.
Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Ervin Motl

Funeral services for Ervin J. “Moe” Motl, 86, of East Bernard, were held Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with Rev. Don Ruppert celebrating the Funeral Mass and Rite of Committal. Burial was in Guardian Angel Catholic Cemetery in Wallis.

Mr. Motl died April 5, 2007, in Wharton. He was born in Industry to Bernard and Amalie Svajda Motl.

He was reared in Wallis and attended Wallis Catholic School. Mr. Motl married the former Miss Emilie Drabek on Nov. 18, 1951, in Wallis. He worked for Allied Concrete as a plant manager in the Concrete Plant Division. Mr. Motl was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and KJT in East Bernard.

Survivors include wife, Emilie Motl of East Bernard; son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Lori Motl of East Bernard; sister, Doris Vitek of Lake Jackson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Louis and Catherine Motl of Hitchcock and Gilbert and Willie Mae Motl of Huntsville; granddaughters, Mandi Motl, Lacy Motl and Haley Motl.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Motl; brother, Ben Motl; and sisters, Bessie Janik and Mary Motl.

Pam Shanks

Pam Shanks, age 44, of El Campo died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born on Jan. 24, 1963, in El Campo the daughter of Alvin Kuretsch and Pearl Reinke Kuretsch.

Mrs. Shanks was a lifelong resident of El Campo and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wharton. She graduated from El Campo High School in 1981. Mrs. Shanks married Kenneth Shanks on Sept. 3, 1994, in Wharton. She was preceded in death by her father in 1998. Mrs. Shanks worked as a legal secretary and escrow officer in El Campo and was a former member of several local civic organizations. She enjoyed helping friends and family as well as being a devoted wife and mother. Her smile and infectious laugh will be forever missed. Mrs. Shanks was truly a gift from God to so many people. She battled cancer with the same determination and grace that she lived life.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, April 14, 2007, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Barry Sharp and Rev. Rick DuBroc officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Park Cemetery in El Campo.

Survivors include her husband, Ken Shanks, their son, Grant Shanks, her mother, Pearl Kuretsch, all of El Campo; sisters and brothers-in-law; Jane and Ruel Wiley of Missouri City, and Susan and Steve Horak of El Campo; sister-in-law, Kelly Shanks, mother-in-law, Sherry Stanley, both of El Campo; niece and nephews, Warren, Michael and Rachel Wiley and Ross and Reid Horak.

Pallbearers will be Steve, Ross and Reid Horak, Ruel, Warren, Michael and Rachel Wiley.

Honorary pallbearer will be Kelly Shanks.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Hospice Support, Inc., P.O. Box 1417, El Campo, TX 77437; or St. John’s Lutheran Church, 614 Pecan St., Wharton, TX 77488; or First Baptist Church, 206 Depot, El Campo, TX 77437.
Visitation was from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton.
