Zora Doris Chaka

Mrs. Zora Doris Chaka, age 79 of Wharton, died Sunday, July 13, 2003 in a Wharton hospital following a brief illness. She was born on October 4, 1923 in Comal County, the daughter of the late Albert Klatt and Rosalie Kunde Klatt.
A Rosary was recited Tuesday, July 15, at the Wharton Funeral Home. A funeral mass was held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Father Joe Vrana officiating. Burial followed in the Holy Cross Memorial Cemetery in El Campo.

Mrs. Chaka had been a life-long resident of Wharton County. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boling and the SPJST. She was married to Edmund Martin Chaka for 62 years. She was a homemaker and raised four sons who loved her very much. More than anything else, she loved visiting with her relatives and friends every chance she got. She and her husband loved dancing, and they loved traveling. She also enjoyed helping others as evidenced by the work she and her husband did for St. Joseph's annual bazaar for many years. Mrs. Chaka was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include her beloved husband, Edmund Chaka of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Rilla Chaka of Round Rock, Ron and Kathy Chaka of Wharton, Sid and Cynthia Chaka of Katy and Thomas Chaka of Richmond; sisters, Roma Stancliff of El Campo and Delrose Stevens of Wharton; brother, Rochus Klatt of El Campo; seven grandchildren, David Chaka, Kristina Chaka, Travis Chaka, Ashley Cha-ka, Brittney Chaka, Jason Chaka and Kevin Chaka. One granddaughter-in-law, Tanya Chaka, wife of Travis Chaka, three great-grandchildren, Shayelynn Chaka, Mason Chaka and Merek Chaka.
Pallbearers were Jerry Fabrygel, Jay Schroder, Al Klatt Jr., Travis Chaka, Jason Chaka, and Kevin Chaka.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, 11251 Northwest Freeway, Suite 300, Houston, TX 77092.
Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Elcenner Cheatham

Funeral services for Elcenner Cheatham, 94, of Wharton, were held July 12 at New Mount Olive Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmie Wright officiating. Burial followed in New Mount Olive Cemetery.
Mrs. Cheatham died July 10, 2003 at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born June 29, 1909 in Mackay to James Henderson and Rosa Mitchell Hill. She had lived all her life in Wharton County, was a member of Order of Eastern Star and a homemaker. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include daughters, Rosa Martin of Brusly, Louisiana, Gladys James of Los Angeles, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Mary Lee Hill and brothers Jessie, Charlie, Lonzo, Morris and Oliver Hill.

Robert "Bobby" Dornak

Following cremation, a rosary/wake service Robert “Bobby” Dornak, 57, of Boling, will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at the Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 17 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Joe Vrana officiating.
Robert “Bobby” Dornak passed away Sunday, July 13 at his home in Boling. He was born Dec. 2, 1945 in Pledger, the son of John and Rosie Shimek Dornak.
He was a 1964 graduate of El Campo High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Texas A&I. He was a Veteran of the Vietname War having served in the United States Air Force. He married Linda Lee Brown on May 16, 1980 in Kingsville. Mr. Dornak worked for the Kleberg County Sheriff’s Dept. for 16 years as chief deputy, then for South Texas Nuclear Plant in Security for 11 years and then was self-employed as a carpenter for five years. He was a resident of Boling for the last 16 years and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Boling. Mr. Dornak was a member of the El Campo American Legion and VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Dornak of Boling; daughters and son-in-law, Bobbi Lynn and Wes Prince of San Antonio and Lilly Didear of Richmond; son and daughter-in-law, Shawn and Stephanie Didear of Boling; sisters, Norma Lee Treybig of Victoria, Florence Paladino of Lumberton and Bernice Buss of El Campo; brothers, Johnny Dornak of Wharton, Victor Dornak of El Campo and Jerome Dornak of El Campo; and 4 grandchildren, Trent Prince, Troy Prince, Richard Didear, and Kory Didear.
If desiring, memorials may be sent to the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Lalla Rookh Road., Boling, TX 77420.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Willie Jackson Jr.

Funeral services for Willie Jackson Jr., 56, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19 at Sand Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday July 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home in Wharton.
Mr. Jackson died July 13, 2003 in Rosenberg following a brief illness. He was born February 12, 1947 in Eagle Lake to May Lou Jackson. He had lived in Wharton County all his life. Mr. Jackson was married to Rita Bluntson and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He was a Viet Nam veteran. He is survived by his wife, Rita Bluntson Jackson; daughters Chaudie Jackson, LaKeisha Jackson and Brittany Flowers and three grandchildren.

A.J. Vasina

Funeral services for A.J. “Lefty” Vasina, 84, of Lissie, were held July 14 at Dulany Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Bill Ramsey, pastor of Lissie United Methodist Church officiating. Burial followed in Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake.
Mr. Vasina died July 11, 2003 at his residence. He was born February 11, 1919 , in Plum, Texas, to Joseph and Ludmilla Holik Vasina. He married Gladiola Hartman on March 4, 1946 at East Bernard and had been a resident of Lissie for 57 years. He was retired from Tennessee Gas Pipeline on July 1, 1982 after 32 years of service. He was a member of Lissie United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Gladiola Vasina of Lissie; daughter Marilyn Frank and husband Paul of Alpharetta, Ga.; sons Kenneth and Terry Vasina, both of Houston; sister Lydia Mechura, Rogers Ark.; 2 grandsons, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Vlasta Elolf and Mary Cervenka; brothers Joe and Jerry Vasina.

Ray Knott

Funeral services for Ray Knott, 59, of Nacogdoches, were held July 15 at Laird-McGill Funeral Home in Nacogdoches with Rev. Don Forrester officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Park.
Mr. Knott died July 12, 2003 in Nacogdoches. He was born march 30, 1944 in Olney, Ill., to Nadine Magers and William Knott Sr. He was a purchasing agent for Foretravel for over 25 years, a Mason and Baptist by faith.
He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Martha Knott Blair.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Schroeder Knott of Nacogdoches; mother, Nadine Knott of Odessa; son and daughter-in-law Jay and Brenna Knott and daughter Regina Knott of Nacogdoches; sisters and brother-in-law Barbara and Harlan Speidel of Wharton, Betty Knott of Odessa; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or American Lung Association.

Patricia Duran

Patricia Duran, age 77, of Wharton, died Monday July 14, 2003 in Wharton. Funeral mass services were held 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with Father Raymond Jackson officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Tuesday evening at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church.
She was born on January 18, 1926 in Bonus, Texas, the daughter of the late Augustine Nunez and Macaria Badio Nunez.

Mrs. Duran was a homemaker and a 53-year resident of Wharton. She was a member of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and Mt. Carmel Catholic Church Choir. She was employed by Caney Valley Memorial Hospital as a nurse’s aide in the nursery until her retirement. She married Pete Duran on May 5, 1945 in Wharton County and was preceded in death by him on March 22, 1983.

Survivors include her daughters, Lupe Duran of Houston, Andrea Duran, Mary Olga Duran and Susan Duran all of Wharton; sons, Pete Duran Jr. and Rick Duran of Wharton; stepson, Gilbert Duran of Palacios; brother, August Nunez of Houston; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a step son, Robert Duran.

Willie Jackson Jr.

Funeral services for Willie Jackson Jr., 56, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19 at Sand Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday July 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home in Wharton.
Mr. Jackson died July 13, 2003 in Rosenberg. He was born February 12, 1947 in Eagle Lake to May Lou Jackson. He had lived in Wharton County all his life. Mr. Jackson was married to Rita Bluntson and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He was a Viet Nam veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Bluntson Jackson; daughters Chaudie Jackson, LaKeisha Jackson and Brittany Flowers and three grandchildren.

Lawrence Pettit

Funeral services for Lawrence Pettit, 79, of Wharton, are pending at Gooden-Hatton funeral Home in Wharton. Mr. Pettit died July 17, 2003 at Gulf Coast Medical Center.

Lloyd Wayne Terrell

Lloyd Wayne Terrell, 67, of Boling, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003 in a Wharton hospital following a sudden illness. He was born on April 21, 1936 in Muldoon, Texas, the son of the late Only Terrell and Rebecca Meneley Terrell.

Mr. Terrell had been a resident of Boling since 1958 and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Boling. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for 47 years with Soloco L.L.C. in Bay City. He married Lucille E. Harrison on May 23, 1958 in Lyford, Texas. His favorite past time was gardening and growing tomatoes. A sister, Frances Beck, and two brothers, J.C. Terrell and Bobby Ray Terrell, preceded Mr. Terrell in death.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 18, at the Chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with the Rev. Darlene Perez and the Rev. Skip Holman officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Terrell of Boling; daughters and son-in-law, Peggy Terrell of Boling and Lori and Jack Gibbs of Waller; sister, Lorene Hunger of La Grange and grandchildren Mindy Terrell and Noah Gibbs.
Pallbearers were Jack Gibbs, Billy Beck, Michael Terrell, Andy Gibbs, Johnnie Byrd, Dwayne Byrd, Bob Blair and Walde Schiurring.
Honorary pallbearers were Noah Gibbs, Lee Rogers, Larry Taylor, Joe Perez, Rudy Hunger and Douglas Beck.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the First Baptist Church of Boling, P.O. Box 210, Boling, TX 77420 or The Texas Baptist Encampment, Palacios, TX 77465.
Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Charles Ervin White

Charles Ervin White, 59, of Wharton, died Monday, July 14, 2003 in a local hospital. Following cremation, memorial services were held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, at the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. A. J. Jones officiating. Private graveside services followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

He was born on March 12, 1944, in Cameron, the son of the late Charlie White and Erva Lee Klimple White. Mr. White was a life long resident of Wharton and Assembly of God by faith. He was employed as a truck driver for 30 years until his retirement. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of Viet Nam. He married Kathleen Daugherty on March 18, 1989 in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen White of Wharton; daughters, Dawn White of Willis and Brandi White of Houston; stepdaughter, Connie Bernard of Wharton; sons, Frank White of Wharton and Jason White of Austin; stepson, Chad Bernard of Wharton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanette and Robert Nicholson of Hallettsville, Brenda and Donnie Guess of Boling, Sherrie and Woodie Townsend of Wharton; brother, John Thomas and Linda White of Wharton; and seven grandchildren.

Charles Ervin White

Following cremation, Memorial Services for Charles Ervin White, 59, of Wharton will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2003 at the Chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Mack Matthys officiating. Mr. White died Monday, July 14, in Wharton following a brief illness.

Marvin Henry

Marvin O. Henry, age 78, of Wharton died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, in a Houston hospital following a brief illness. He was born on Sept. 14, 1924, in Edna, the son of the late William Marvin Henry and Virginia Gholson Howland.

Mr. Henry had been a resident of Wharton since 1957 and was Baptist by faith. He was the former co-owner of Coastal Warehouse in Wharton until his retirement in 1976. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Army Air Corps. Mr. Henry married Bonnie Aills on Jan. 30, 1949, in Tatum. He was a past president of the 100 Club of Wharton County. Mr. Henry was also a member of American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton and was active in Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball.
Following cremation, memorial Services were held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at First Baptist Church in Wharton with Rev. Mack Mathis officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Henry; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Damon Parker and son, Michael Henry, all of Wharton; sister, Margaret Works of Houston; grandchildren, Amanda Henry, Ashley Parker, Nicholas Henry Parker and Theresa Henry.

Honorary pallbearers were all of his business associates, golfing and hunting friends and neighbors.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to: First Baptist Church, 507 N. Fulton, Wharton, Texas; or The Wharton County 100 Club, P.O. Box 868, Wharton, Texas 77488; or The American Heart Association, 2626 S. Loop West, Suite 510, Houston, Texas 77054.

Fannie Williams

Funeral services for Fannie Mae Williams, 64, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 13 at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. L.C. Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.
Ms. Williams died Sept. 3, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Dec. 16, 1938, in Wharton, to Coy and Lula Mae Kuykendall Williams.

Survivors include sons, Wayne Williams of Wharton and Robert McCoy Williams of Houston; daughters, Barbara Hearne and Debra Byrd, both of Wharton, and Sharon Yates of Houston; 18 grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

Marcus Williams

Marcus Robert “Buddy” Williams, age 75, of East Bernard, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at his residence following a brief illness.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today, Sept. 4, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Paul Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Mr. Williams was born July 29, 1928 in Oakwood, the son of the late George Williams and Velma Lois Wallace Williams. He had been a resident of East Bernard since 1951 and was a member of the Abell Street Church of Christ. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a farmer with his father from 1945 to 1949. He was a dairy owner-operator from 1971 until 1976. He also was a truck driver for many years with George Joines, worked in warehouse maintenance with Hudson Engineering in Houston and retired in July 1986. He married Dorothy Louise Stewart on Dec. 3, 1971 in East Bernard.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Williams of East Bernard; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Patrick F. Stavena, Diane and Craig Taylor all of East Bernard; sisters and brother-in-law Dixie and Donny Runnel of Columbus and Lois Williams of Kentucky; brothers and sisters-in-law, T.W. and Earlene Williams of Kentucky, Gidie and Betty Williams of Hempstead; grandchildren, Shane Stavena, Lorinda Stavena, Lisa Stavena, Patrick James Stavena, Bryan Taylor and Carrie Taylor; great-grandchildren, Abigale Lounsbury Stavena and Brittany White; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Will Mazel, Lester Wallace, Danny Runnel, Joe Joines, Bill Joines and Kyle Brown. Honorary pallbearers were Darren Vacek, Joe Mike Spanihel, Vance Duncan, Danny Eppes, John Murrile, Sherrill Speer, Buck Boettcher, all of his nieces, nephews and friends.

Beverly Wright

Beverly Lois Wright, 79, of Wharton and a former longtime resident of Bridge City, died early Tuesday morning, Sept. 2, 2003, in a Wharton hospital following an extended illness. She was born on May 27, 1924, in Rome, N.Y., the daughter of the late Loren Bailey and Lois Haines Bailey.

Mrs. Wright had been a resident of Bridge City for the past 26 years before moving to Wharton in August of 2003. Prior to her living in Bridge City she was a longtime resident of Rome, N.Y. Mrs. Wright worked as an office manager for a State Farm Insurance Agency prior to her retirement. She married Benard Wayman Wright on Dec. 5, 1961 in Pennsylvania. Mrs. Wright was Presbyterian by faith and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Following cremation, memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at First Presbyterian Church in Wharton with Rev. Michael Alexander officiating.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Rev. Debbie Cenko and Russell Cenko of Houston; son and daughter-in-law, David Alan and Colleen Franz of Caledonia, N.Y.; and grandchildren, Paul Michael Cenko and Catherine Helene Cenko.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the First Presbyterian Church, 1602 John Knox, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Allen Kovar

Funeral services for Allen Kovar, 85, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church. Wake services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Wharton Funeral Home. Friends may call for visitation starting at 6 p.m. Monday.

Mr. Kovar died Nov. 13, 2003, in Webster.

Frank Macek

Funeral services for Frank Henry Macek Sr., 87, of Edna and formerly of Louise, were held Friday at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo with Rev. Jim Lane officiating. Burial followed in Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo with military honors furnished by American Legion Post No. 251.

Mr. Macek died Nov. 11, 2003. He was born May 27, 1916, in Burleson County to the late Tom and Mary Foyt Macek.

He worked as a farmer and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Macek was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include wife, Martha Helen Cerny Macek of Edna; daughters, Joyce Faglie of Edna, Karen Ham of Inez and Ada Martin of Bryan; sons, Frank Macek Jr. and Clarence Macek, both of Louise, Edwin Macek of Beeville and Allan Macek of Austin; sisters, Frances Matura and Annie Sobotik, both of El Campo; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth McCollum

Funeral services for Elizabeth McCollum, 100, of Wharton, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday before the services. Graveside services will be held at noon Monday at Mission Park South Cemetery in San Antonio.

Mrs. McCollum died Nov. 12, 2003, in a Wharton nursing home after an extended illness. She was born May 25, 1903, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Roberts.

She had been a resident of Wharton for the past 10 years and was a former longtime resident of Corpus Christi. Mrs. McCollum was a lifetime member of Grace United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi, a member of the Corpus Christi Garden Club and A.A.R.P. She married Joe A. McCollum on Dec. 4, 1931, in Floresville and he preceded her in death in November of 1974.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law; Bette Jo and William Kelso of La Grange; son, Edward McCollum of La Grange; 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
