Joe Dusek

Funeral Services for Joe S. Dusek, 86, of East Bernard, were held on Tuesday at Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Wallis with Rev. Richard Johnston officiating. Burial followed in Guardian Angel Catholic Cemetery.
Mr. Dusek died Jan. 24, 2004, in Houston. He was born in Wallis, to E.J. and Sophie Petrash Dusek.
He was reared Krasna and attended Central School. Mr. Dusek married Otillie Poessel on Oct. 25, 1938, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. He was a farmer and member of was a member of Guardian Angel Catholic Church, K.J.T., Knights of Columbus, Catholic Workmen, served on the board of directors of Orchard Fireman’s Co-op, was past president of the Orchard School Board and was on Guardian Angel Perish Council for more than 15 years.
Survivors include wife, Tillie Dusek of East Bernard, daughters and sons-in-law, Joan Ann and Eugene Demny of Orchard, Cynthia and Lonnie Beseda of East Bernard and Mary and Roger Crisswell of Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe W. and Cynthia Dusek of Orchard, Pat and Carolyn Dusek of Tavner; 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Vacek; brothers, Frank and Charles Dusek Sr.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Brandi Ward Cancer Benefit Fund, c/o First United Methodist Church, P.O, Box 231, East Bernard, TX 77435.

Belia Garza
Funeral services for Belia Garza, 79, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Matthews Funeral Home.
Mrs. Garza died Feb. 1, 2004, at Wharton Manor Nursing Home. She was born Sept. 8, 1925, in Falfurias to Ramon Garza and Jesusa Gutierrez.
She worked in domestic care.
Survivors include daughter, Delores Bower of Wharton; son, Gilbert Garza; sister, Ramona Sedillo; 2 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Martha Graff
Funeral services for Martha Hrineck Graff, 101, of Sealy, were held Monday at First United Methodist Church in East Bernard with Rev. Michael Holcomb officiating. Burial followed in The Methodist Cemetery in East Bernard.
Mrs. Graff died Jan. 29, 2004, in Katy. She was born April 19, 1902, in Fort Bend County to the late Frank and Rosa Lee Trleca Hrineck.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Graff and her parents.
Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.

Inez Johnson
Funeral services for Inez Johnson, 90, of Boling, are pending at Matthews Funeral Home.
Ms. Johnson died Feb. 3, 2004, at Gulf Coast Medical Center.

Bessie Prochaska
Funeral services for Bessie Prochaska, 88, of East Bernard, were held Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at 10 a.m. from Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Wallis with Rev. Richard Johnston, S.C.J., celebrating the mass and rite of committal. Entombment was at the Guardian Angel Mausoleum in Wallis.
Pallbearers serving were Thomas Kramr, Darryl Kramr, Chris Kulcak, Michael Merta, Alan Merta, Joe D. Prochaska, John Prochaska and James Prochaska.
Born in East Bernard, Mrs. Prochaska was the daughter of Frank and Otillie Vacek Prazak. She was reared in East Bernard and attended Holy Cross Catholic School. On April 20, 1938, the former Miss Bessie Prazak was joined in marriage to Mr. Joe J. Prochaska with a ceremony held at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. She was a member of K.J.Z.T., K.J.T., Guardian Angel Altar Society and Guardian Angel Catholic Church. Mrs. Prochaska died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Ann Kramr and husband Syl of East Bernard, Wilma Kulcak and husband Jim of Missouri City and Barbara Merta and husband Lawrence of Brownsville; son, Joe F. Prochaska and wife Martha; brothers, Joe Prazak and wife Lucy of Houston and Henry Prazak and wife Anne of East Bernard; brother-in-law, Charlie Muras of Houston; grandchildren, Thomas Kramr and wife Sarah, Kathleen Fuhrmann and husband Alex, Darryl Kramr and wife Donna, Chris Kulcak and wife Amy, Karen Levine and husband Ron, Sharon Kulcak, Rev. Lawrence Merta (serving as a priest in Rome, Italy), Alan Merta and wife Becky, Rachel Rodriguez and husband Sergie, Michael Merta, Arlene Valdez and husband Cesar, Joe D. Prochaska, John Prochaska and James Prochaska; 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by parents Frank and Otillie Prazak; husband, Joe J. Prochaska; grandson, Timmy Kramr; sisters, Mary Viktorin, Annie Macha, Tillie Dusek, Frances Viaclovsky and Agnes Muras; brothers, Vencil, Frank, Albert and Blase Prazak; infant sister, Angeline; and infant brothers, Johnny and Sylvester.
Funeral services were under the direction of Knesek Funeral Chapel in Wallis.

Marcella Sevcik
Funeral services for Marcella Ann Sevcik, 85, of Wharton, were held Sunday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with Rev. Don Ruppert officiating. Burial followed in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Mrs. Sevcik died Jan. 30, 2004, in a Wharton nursing home. She was born on Aug. 25, 1918, in LaGrange, the daughter of the late Hugo and Vlast
a Kubala Sevcik.
She attended the School for the Deaf in Austin. Prior to retiring, she worked as a seamstress. She was a former resident of El Campo and Catholic by faith.
Survivors include sisters, Georgia Wicke of East Bernard, Sylvia Kieler of Wharton, Mary Kieler of Hillje and Florence Adimitis of El Campo; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by sisters, Ellen Winzeried and Lydia Konarik.

Lucy Buzek

Funeral services for Lucy Buzek, 90, of El Campo, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nada with Rev. Joseph Koebel officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo. Rosary will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nada.

Mrs. Buzek died March 22, 2004. She was born Jan. 19, 1914, in Nada to the late Joseph and Annie Drlik Labay.

She married the late Paul Kubecka and later married Louis Buzek Sr., who also preceded her in death. Mrs. Buzek was a homemaker. She was a member of the Nada KJZT No. 17 and Christian Mothers.
Survivors include daughters, Connie Schoellmann of Nada, Juliana Kotulek of El Campo and Anna Lee Peikert of Egypt; sons, Leroy Buzek and Louis Buzek, both of El Campo; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, eight sisters and five brothers.

Willie Jones

Funeral services for Willie Lee Jones, 77, of Wharton, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. A.J. Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Jones died March 19, 2004, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born in Wharton Feb. 19, 1927, to Alvin and Tennessee Newmon Hargrove.

Survivors include son, Kenneth Jones of Wharton; sisters, L.V. Steele of Wharton and Mildred Brown of El Paso; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-granchildren.

Nofrio Schiro

A memorial service for Nofrio Monty Schiro, 61, of Wharton, will be held at a later date.

Mr. Schiro died March 20, 2004, at Wharton Manor Nursing Home. He was born Jan. 30, 1943, in Houston to George Schiro and Myrtle Booth. He worked as a fence builder.

Ann Stanfield

Funeral services for Ann Rhodes Stanfield, 96, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Wharton Funeral Home with Dr. Donnie Melton officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Cemetery in Garrison.

Mrs. Stanfield died March 20, 2004, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born in Garrison on Aug. 11, 1907, the daughter of the late Thomas Edward Rhodes and Mary Ophelia Lee Rhodes.

She grew up in Garrison and graduated from Garrison High School. Mrs. Stanfield attended Stephen F. Austin University where she received her bachelor of science and master’s degrees. She taught in Garrison where she met Curtis Stanfield and they were married on July 17, 1928, in Garrison. He preceded her in death on May 12, 1983. They taught in several small towns before moving to Wharton in 1955. Mrs. Stanfield taught in the Wharton Independent School District until her retirement in 1974. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Wharton.
Survivors include numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

If desiring, memorials may be sent to the church or a charity of personal choice.

Martha Bradshaw

Funeral services for Martha M. Bradshaw, 57, of Houston, are pending with Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home.

Valara Honc

Valara Schunka Honc, age 84, of Wharton, died Sunday, May 9, 2004, in Wharton. She was born on Sept. 20, 1919, in New Ulm, the daughter of the late Adolph and Caline Kech Schunka.
Mrs. Honc married Joseph “Joe” Anton Honc on Jan. 6, 1936, in Wharton. He preceded her in death on March 14, 1998. She was a lifetime resident of Wharton County having lived in Pierce, Burr and Wharton. She was Lutheran by faith and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2004, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Barry Sharp officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Velma and Leland Treybig of Wharton, Lorene and Tommy Strothers of Irving and Betty Emshoff of Wharton; son and daughter-in-law, Clifford and Sandra Honc of Hungerford; sister, Lucille Foster of Wharton; 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Tallas and Hulda Bennetsen and brothers, Charlie Schunka, Johnny Schunka and Frank Schunka.

Pallbearers were Leland Treybig Jr., Philip Treybig, Kenneth Wittig, Forrest Wittig, Calvin Mathis, Martin Mathis, Melissa Honc and Rebecca Honc.

Honorary Pallbearers were Robert McMicken Jr. and David Voulgaris.

Leighton McDonald

Funeral services for Leighton “Buddy” S. McDonald, 75, of El Campo, were held Tuesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Barry Sharp officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Memorial Park Cemetery in El Campo.

Mr. McDonald died May 9, 2004. He was born Aug. 3, 1928, in El Campo to the late Leighton Smoot and Anna R. Fischer McDonald.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was salutatorian of his 1946 graduating class at El Campo High School. Mr. McDonald graduated summa cum laude with a BS in chemistry from Texas A&I University and did his post graduate work at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas A&M University. He was a retired chemical engineer in 1984 after 29 years of service with Dow Chemical as a senior research specialist. Mr. McDonald held numerous patents and had been awarded the Dow Product Stewartship Sentry Award. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and held the offices of church president, elder and teacher.

Survivors include wife of 50 years, Emma Dell Torchta McDonald of El Campo; daughters, Karen Ann McDonald of Arlington and Patricia Ardell Benson of Montgomery; and three grand children. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Anna Marie McDonald and Eddie Charlene Hendrick; and nephew, Joseph S. Hendrick.

Louis Berberich

Louis John Berberich passed away peacefully on July 20, 2004. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 26, at 5 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Kersten officiating.

Louis is survived by his son, Rick Berberich of Burr; daughter, Amy and son-in-law, Keith Ermis, of Burr; and daughter, Mona and son-in-law, David Zimmerman, of Jersey Village; and his grandchildren, Kayci and Kelli Ermis and Paul and Jessi Zimmerman.

Raymond Carranza

Funeral services for Raymond Carranza, 35, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Grace Community Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Carranza died Sept. 17, 2004, in a Houston hospital following a motorcycle accident.

Friends may call for visitation from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Marvin Gerke

Funeral services for Marvin S. Gerke Sr., age 83, of Rosenberg, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at Friedens United Church of Christ, 7526 Avenue I in Beasley. The Rev. Michael Doane and the Rev. Mirjam Berger will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery . Bill Gerke, George Isleib, Marvin Gerke III, Kyle Gerke, Kody Gerke and Justin Lindemann will serve as pall bearers.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today, Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at Garmany & Carden Funeral Home in Rosenberg.

Mr. Gerke died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital in Richmond. He was born Sept. 7, 1921 in Beasley to parents, Fred and Lena Gindorf Gerke.

He was a local farmer and rancher. Mr. Gerke was a member of Friedens United Church of Christ. He also served his country in the United States Army.

His wife, Leona Albright Gerke, preceded him in death, along with a sister, Leona Myska, brother Fred “Firecracker” Gerke, and brother-in-law George Isleib.

He is survived by two sons, Marvin S. Gerke Jr. and wife, Jenny, of Henderson, Paul Allen Gerke and wife, Jacque, of Rosenberg; one daughter, Janet Buller of Rosenberg; grandchildren: Jana Lindemann and Julie Buller of Rosenberg; Marvin “Trey” Gerke III and wife, Rhonda; Joey Gerke and wife, Sara; Jenna Millis and husband, Marshall, all of Richmond; Kyle Gerke and Kody Gerke of College Station; great-grandchildren, Jami, Justin, Jessica, Jo Anna, and Joshua Lindemann, all of Rosenberg; sister, Alma Isleib of Fredericksburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial gifts may be made to Friedens United Church of Christ, 7526 Avenue 1, Beasley, TX 77417.

Funeral services are under the direction of Garmany & Carden Funeral Directors in Rosenberg.

Erma Taylor

Erma Lee Taylor passed away Nov. 21, 2004, in Kendleton, at the age of 90. She was born in Booth to Frank and Amonia Fisher Simpson.

Mrs. Taylor graduated from Dayton Industrial High School in Dayton, in 1933. She met and married William Taylor Jr., and to this union one son was born. Mrs. Taylor was a faithful member of Newman Chapel United Methodist Church for many years, and attended church regularly until her health failed. She was very active in all church activities and served as president of the choir as well as president of the Woman Mission. Mrs. Taylor was also a member of the Kendleton Floral Club, The Eastern Star and The Court of Calanthe.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and five brothers. She is survived by William, her beloved husband of 71 years; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Hazel; four grandchildren; Gregory and wife, Eva, William, Robert and Charlexia Taylor McQueen and husband, Willie; two great-grandchildren; Mallary and Vincent Taylor; four sister-in-laws and one brother-in-law. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends to cherish her loving memory. Her physical presence will be greatly missed, but she will remain in our hearts forever.

Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Newman Chapel United Methodist Church in Kendleton. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.
