Santana Rivera

Santana Andrade Rivera, age 51, of Wharton, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, in Wharton following an extended illness. She was born on Sept. 29, 1953, in Wharton, the daughter of the late Ynes Andrade and Andrea Becerra Andrade.

Mrs. Rivera had been a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton. She worked as a shipping and receiving clerk for Cardell Cabinets in El Campo. Mrs. Rivera also worked at Texas Instruments in Stafford and at Pepco Poms in Lane City. Her hobby was playing bingo.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law; Sara and Randy Jaquez of Wharton; son and daughter-in-law, Ernest and Angie Rivera Jr. of Wharton; sister, Isabel Garcia of Wharton; grandchildren, Arianna Andrea Guerra, Alyssandra Renee Herrera and Christopher Elias Rivera.

Pallbearers were Shirley Arriaga, Irene Valdez, Stella Rodriguez, Gracie Gutierrez, Linda Fira and Estella Garza.
Honorary pallbearers were Rene Rodriguez, Chendo Rodriguez, Roy Garza, Tino Zavala, Miguel Zavala and Arthur Guerra.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Rosa Mikeska

Rosa Lee Mikeska, age 97, of Wharton, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, in a Wharton nursing home following an extended illness.

She was born on Aug. 11, 1908, in Brookshire, the daughter of the late John Parenica and Rosa Kristoff Parenica.

Mrs. Mikeska had been a resident of Wharton County for the past 91 years and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wharton.

She married Edwin Mikeska on Dec. 23, 1925, in Brookshire, and he preceded her in death on March 3, 1992. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Dzierzanowski on Dec. 17, 2004 and one brother, Joe Parenica.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today, Friday, March 10, 2006, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Debbie Cenko officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Gladys and Alvin G. Cerny of El Campo; grandchildren, Gary Cerny, Lloyd Cerny, Glenn Cerny, Cindy Mahalitc and David Dzierzanowski; 10 great-grandchildren, Laura Dorotik, Kristi Walton, Kara Cerny, Garrett Cerny, Brandy Cerny, Jody Cerny, Troy Cerny, Kyle Chandler, Cory Chandler and Kaylee Chandler; two great-great-grandchildren, Kellen Dorotik and Jaydin Cerny.
Pallbearers were Gary Cerny, Lloyd Cerny, Glenn Cerny, David Dzierzanowski, Anthony Mahalitc, Vern Guinn and Raymond Mikeska.

Honorary Pallbearers were Sam Houston IV, Cindy Mahalitc, Dianne Cerny, Diane Cerny, Brenda Brown, all of her great-grandchildren, the staff of Avalon Place Nursing Home and Rose Partap.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Hospice Support, Inc., P.O. Box 1417, El Campo, TX 77437; or First Presbyterian Church, 1602 John Knox, Wharton, TX 77488.

Alice Dzierzanowski

Funeral services for Alice Dzierzanowski, 68, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dzierzanowski died Friday morning in a Wharton hospital following a sudden illness.

Walter Harris

Funeral services for Walter Lee “Pop” Harris Jr., 71, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. L.C. Humphrey Jr. officiating. Burial follows in Old Bethlehem Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Thursday.

Mr. Harris died June 11, 2006, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Oct. 21, 1934, in Wharton to Walter Lee and Lucy James Harris Sr.

Survivors include brothers, Willie Harris of San Antonio and Rev. Harry Higgins of Houston; and sister, Billie Jean Thomas of Tucson, Ariz.

Debbie McSweeney

Graveside services for Debbie McSweeney, 52, were held Saturday at SouthPark Cemetery.

Ms. McSweeney died June 6, 2006, at a hospital.

She was preceded in death by her mother Eula Van McSweeney.

Survivors include father, Joseph McSweeney; brother, Gary McSweeney; and other relatives.

Anna Ripptoe

Funeral services for Anna Marie Ripptoe, 90, of Bay City, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Center Union Baptist Church with Rev. D. Anderson officiating.

Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Ripptoe died June 12, 2006, at Matagorda General Hospital. She was born Aug. 19, 1915, in Wharton to George and Mary Rosetta Hill Pines.

Survivors include son, George Andrew Lowe of Dallas; daughter, Roversia Dixon of Houston; brothers, Toney C. Jackson and Toney J. Johnson, both of Galveston; sister, Frankie Lee Lewis of Markham, Carrie D. Johnson of Hungerford and Arlene Miller of Hungerford.

Reuben Sepulveda

Funeral services for Reuben Dario Sepulveda, 51, of Farmers Branch, were held June 1 at the Houston National Cemetery with full military honors by a U.S. Marines Corps color guard and bugler. A rosary was held May 31 at the Arlington National Funeral Home in Houston.

Mr. Sepulveda died in Dallas after a sudden illness. He was born on Aug. 23, 1954, in Newgulf to Julio and Mary Louise Sepulveda. Mr. Sepulveda graduated from Boling High School. He served in the U.S. Marines Corps and was a corporal during the Vietnam era. After his tour of duty he lived in the Dallas area. Mr. Sepulveda owned a remodeling company and worked on commercial and residential construction.

He was preceded in death by his father, Julio Sepulveda Sr., and his brother, Richard Salinas.

Survivors include his daughter, Heather Nicole Finney and her husband, Billy, and 3 grandchildren, all of Plantersville, Miss.; his mother, Mary Louise Sepulveda of Boling; brothers, Julio Sepulveda Jr. and Ramon Edward Sepulveda, both of Houston, and Baldemar Sepulveda of Rosenberg; and sisters, Mary Sepulveda of Siler City, N.C., Velia Garcia and Conception Rodriguez, both of Houston, Irene Rodriguez of Rosharon, Rosalia Sepulveda and Guadalupe Sepulveda, both of San Antonio, and Deborah Ferrel of Boling; and a host of nephews and nieces.

Raymond House

Raymond Dorwin House, age 67, of Houston, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, in his home. He was born on Sept. 16, 1939, in Los Angeles, Calif., son of the late Robert House and Marjorie Richardson Ellis.

Mr. House was reared in Rochester, Ind., area and attended school there. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps from August 1958 until July 1962 rising to the rank of corporal. Upon completion of his active duty, Ray worked in restaurant management. He enjoyed fishing, his flower garden and his dogs.

Visitation began at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, from the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with a rosary starting at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his sons, Raymond Zimmerman and Eric Zimmerman both of Peoria, Ill.; daughters, Rhonda Speed and husband, Rodney, of Lancaster, Calif., and Christine Speed and husband, Ronnie, of Rosemond, Calif.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brother, William House and wife, Elaine, of Katy; niece, Margie Smith and husband, Johnathan, of Houston; and a special friend, Jose Trevino of Houston.
Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Oscar Perry

“My heart is filled with happiness and sweet rejoicing, too. To walk with God is perfect peace, joy forever new.”

Oscar Lee Perry had his transition on Dec. 20, 2006. The celebration of his life will be held at Camp Zion Rising Star United Baptist Church in Wharton at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006.

Visitation was held from 1 to 8 p.m.
Friday in the Rose Chapel of Mabrie Memorial Mortuary in Houston.

In God’s care he leaves his loving son, Michael Perry; loving mother, Edna Anderson; five sisters and six brothers; eight grandchildren; ex-wife, Lorcia Perry; and many other dear relatives and friends.

Lillian Elkins

Lillian Elkins, age 90, of Wharton, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2007, in Wharton following a brief illness. She was born on Oct. 4, 1916, in Damon, daughter of the late Phillip F. Keszler and Elizabeth Stotz Keszler.

Mrs. Elkins had been a resident of Wharton since 1941. She was a graduate of West Columbia High School. She married Francis Mack “Bougie” Elkins on Dec. 6, 1937, and he preceded her in death on May 30, 1992. She was also preceded in death by 10 elder brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Elkins was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Wharton. She enjoyed playing golf, bridge, dominoes, cards and visiting with all of her family and friends. Mrs. Elkins was a 50-year member of the Wharton chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 1, 2007, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Mack Mathis officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Visitation for friends and family was held on Wednesday Feb. 28, 2007.

Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Josephine Vonderau of Needville; grandchildren, Kimberley Rebecca Miller and husband Chad of Cypress, and Elizabeth Ann Montalvo and husband Domingo of Wharton; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Rebecca Montalvo, Charles Mack Montalvo, Zoe Elizabeth Miller, Lillian Alicia Mozelle Montalvo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are Domingo Montalvo, Chad Miller, Charles Montalvo, Walter Curtis Brisch, Michael Brisch, and Allen Brisch.

Honorary pallbearers are Phil Salazar, Pete Salazar, Milbert Keszler, Raymond Keszler, and all of her many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
The family of Mrs. Elkins wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Andrea Salazar and Yeni Mata for their special loving care.

Damon Lackey

Graveside services for Damon Lackey, 65, of Wharton, were held Friday at Pawnee Cemetery in Beeville with Rev. Walter Gilbert officiating. Visitation was held earlier in the day at Angelus Funeral Home in Beeville.

Mr. Lackey died Feb. 26, 2007, in Wharton. He was born Sept. 28, 1941, in Weslaco to the late Willie and Aliene Cox Lackey.

He was a retired TABC officer. Mr. Lackey married Rachel Armendariz on Nov. 22, 1990, in Wharton. He remained a commissioned officer until the time of his death. Mr. Lackey was preceded in death by his parents and an uncle, Lloyd Cabiness.

Survivors include wife, Rachel Lackey of Wharton; son, Brandon Cruz of Wharton; daughter, Sandra Rodriguez of Wharton; three grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Terry and Kaye Lackey of Mercedes and Randy and Gayle Lackey of Bakersfield, Calif.; and numerous other family members.

Christopher Stavinoha

Christopher Alan Stavinoha, age 31, of Louise, died early Wednesday morning, Feb. 28, 2007, in an automobile accident near Wharton. He was born on Jan. 29, 1976, in Wharton the son of Donald Lee Stavinoha Sr. and Mildred Marie Machart Stavinoha.

Mr. Stavinoha had been a resident of Louise for the past two years and was a former resident of Palacios. He was Catholic by faith and enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking and spending time with his son, Chase.

A Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2007, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, March 3, 2007, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Columbus with Rev. Dan Kahlich officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery in Columbus.

Survivors include his son; Chase Andrew Stavinoha of East Bernard; parents, Donald Lee and Mildred Marie Stavinoha Sr. of Palacios; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol Ann and Benny Husinecky Jr., Karen Sue and Douglas Eugene Koehler, all of Wharton, Sandra Jean Graeber of Hungerford, Tina Marie Stavinoha of Bay City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald Lee “Buddy” and Trudi Stavinoha, Kevin Lee and Christina Stavinoha, all of Columbus, Jody and Amy Stavinoha of Wharton. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Pallbearers are Eddie Russell, Bradley Stancik, Kyle Lewis, Stephen Dirba, Johnny Gresham, Dan Mazza, Ray Stavinoha and Frank Miculka.

Honorary Pallbearers are his son Chase, and his brother Riley Henke and all of Chris’ nieces and nephews.

Angie Tomasek

Angie Weller Hessler Tomasek, 93, of Edna and formerly of Blessing, passed away Feb. 13, 2007. She was born in Hallettsville on June 27, 1913, to the late Gus and Agnes Jurak Weller. She was a member of Catholic Daughters Our Queen of the Clergy Court No. 1990 in Wharton.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Julius Hessler; her second husband, Victor C. Tomasek; daughter, Barbara Nell Sablatura; and grandson, Stephen Sablatura.

Mrs. Tomasek is survived by her daughter Mary Dean Maresh of Edna; sister, Laurine Schwertner of Wharton; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at Oaklawn Funeral Home. A rosary was recited at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 16, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna. The funeral service followed at 10:30 a.m. with Msgr. M.A. O’Shaughnessy, Rev. Johnson Owusu-Boating and Rev. Sam Appiasi officiating. Burial was held at 2:30 p.m. in Evergreen Memorial Park in Wharton.

Pallbearers were Terry Schwertner, Billy Schwertner, Tommy Schwertner, Stanley Sablatura, Stewart Sablatura, Sterling Sablatura and Michael S. Maresh.
Memorials may be made to St. Agnes Catholic Church of Edna; St. John Bosco Catholic Church of Vanderbilt; St. Peter’s Catholic Church of Blessing; Hospice of South Texas; or a charity of personal choice.

Bob Hubenak

Bob Wayne Hubenak of Point Comfort, formerly of El Campo, died Feb. 26, 2007, at the age of 61. He was born May 9, 1945, in El Campo to the late Robert and Josie Nitsche Hubenak.

He was a control operator for Alcoa-Point Comfort, retiring in 2000. Mr. Hubenak was a U.S. Army veteran of Viet Nam where he earned a Purple Heart Medal. He was a member of the Blessing American Legion and a lifetime member of the VFW.

Mr. Hubenak is survived by his wife Sue Ann Mitchell Hubenak of Palacios; daughters, Rebecca Hubenak-Harness and husband Kent of Austin, Judy Perry and husband James of El Campo; grandchildren, Nathan and Ethan Harness and Kalynn Perry; brothers, Bennie Hubenak of Arizona, Lawrence Hubenak of Arkansas, Daniel Hubenak of El Campo, Leon Hubenak of Freeport and Leonard Hubenak of El Campo; sisters, Betty Lou Urbanovsky of Schulenberg, Beatrice Olsovsky of Victoria and Linda Schilhab of El Campo. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gene Hubenak; sister, Dorothy Cormier; and granddaughter, Jacie Perry.

Visitation will begin 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Triska Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Triska Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Janak officiating.

Graveside services under the auspices of the Blessing American Legion Post will follow at Holy Cross Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Royce Hubenak, Darren Hubenak, Jeffrey Schilhab, Dwayne Schilhab, Richard Olsovsky and John Olsovsky.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of personal choice.

Donicio Munoz

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2007 at a 10 a.m. Catholic Mass will be in St. Jude Catholic Church, 6825 Gladys Ave. in Beaumont, for Donicio Richardo Muñoz, 58, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette, La. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Beaumont. Rev. T.R. Blanco, T.S.A., will be the celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Maria Dodge Muñoz of Lafayette; one son, Don Richard Muñoz and his wife, Stacy of Dallas; one daughter, Miranda Johnson and her husband, George, of Silsbee; four grandchildren, Lauren, Megan, Tommy and Katie; one step-daughter, Tracy Ross and her husband, Jeff; and four step-grandchildren; three brothers, Fred Muñoz and his wife, Debbie, of Vidor, Cesar Muñoz and his wife, Patricia of Port Arthur, and William Muñoz of Houston; three sisters, Rose Gonzales and her husband, Jesse, of Beaumont, Emelda Broussard and her husband, Robert, of Beaumont and Norma Martinez and her husband, Johnny; nine nieces and nephews; three brothers-in-law, Walter Dodge and his wife, Judy, Aaron Dodge and his wife, Janet, and Timothy Dodge; five sisters-in-law, Annette Dodge, Andrea Istre and her husband, Kenny, Angela Holstead and her husband, Billy, Effie Robin, and Lillian Guidroz and her husband, Ricky, all from the Lafayette, La., area.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dionicio and Hermelinda Muñoz.

Mr. Muniz was a retired United States Air Force Veteran, having served more than 22 years in various Middle Eastern countries, England and other European countries. He also served in the West Pacific during the Vietname War, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 10293 in Lafayette, La. Mr. Munoz was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend to all. He was a good man, and adored his family very much.

He never met a stranger, and befriended everyone that he met. He loved to fish, bowl, and dance. Donicio often enjoyed socializing with his family and friends. He was a people person who always had a smile and a joke for everyone. He will be sadly missed by family and friends, and all that knew and loved him.

The family requests that visitation be observed on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, from noon to 9 p.m., with a Rosary at 7 p.m. in Broussard Mortuary, 1605 N. Major Dr. in Beaumont. Visitation will continue on Thursday, March 1, 2007, from 8 a.m. until time of services.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Muñoz’s name to the American Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.

Richard Sewell

Funeral services for Richard “Kenny” Sewell, age 49, of Needville, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2007, at the Garmany & Carden Funeral Directors Chapel in Needville with Rev. Carl Spradley officiating. Burial will follow in Guy Public Cemetery in Guy.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Sewell, Bryan Sewell, Scott Sewell, Mike Sewell, Terry Sewell and Robby Sewell.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, at the Garmany & Carden Chapel in Needville.

Mr. Sewell was born July 22, 1957, in Marlin, to Forrest and Juana Westmoreland Sewell. He died Feb. 25, 2007, at St Luke’s Hospital in Houston,. He was an administrative director of engineering for medical facilities. He loved fishing and going to the beach and barbecuing. He will be remembered as a loving husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Sewell of Needville; daughter, Christine Sewell, of Needville; son, Thomas Sewell of Needville; brothers, Scott Sewell and wife, Heather, of Bryan, Mike Sewell of Manvel, Terry Sewell and wife, Sharon, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Robby Sewell of Francistas; and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. Mr. Sewell was preceded in death by his parents.

Adolph Chilek

Adolph B. Chilek Sr., age 85, of Boling died Sunday, April 15, 2007, in a Sugar Land Hospital following a brief illness. He was born on Jan. 8, 1922, in DeWitt County, the son of the late August Chilek and Annie Micola Chilek.

Mr. Chilek was a resident of the Boling area most of his life and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boling. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a prisoner of war for 22 months.

He married Elsie Mae Werner on Jan. 9, 1950. Mr. Chilek worked as a station operator for Texasgulf Sulphur Company for 32 years until his retirement in 1982. Mr. Chilek was a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post No. 87 in Wharton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mary Matcek, Annie Pavlas and Therese Wearden; brothers, Johnnie Rudy Chilek, August Chilek and Joe Chilek.
Friends may call for visitation after 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at Wharton Funeral Home and a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 19, 2007, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Dominic Antwi-Boasiako officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with military graveside honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Mae Chilek of Wharton; son and daughter-in-law, Bernard and Sherlene Chilek Jr. of Boling; grandson and wife Shawn and Jacquelynne Chilek; and great-grandchildren, Colby Jack Chilek and Azalynne Maerose Chilek.

Pallbearers will be Frank Chilek, Clem Chilek, Daniel Chilek, Julius Pavlas, Charlie Matcek and Billy Wearden.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church c/o Holy Family Catholic Church, 2011 Briar Ln., Wharton, TX 77488.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Grover Edwards

Funeral services for Grover D. Edwards, 79, of Egypt, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Gilead Baptist Church with Rev. R. Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Gilead Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Edward died April 14, 2007, at his residence. He was born Feb. 1, 1928, in Wharton to Earlie and Julia Gillis Edwards.

Survivors include wife, Charlene McCarter Edwards of Egypt; sons, Dwain Smith and Clarence Smith, both of Houston; daughters, Velma Ann Edwards, Linda Kaye Heard, Dora Jackson, Sue Anne Robinson, Deborah Smith and Charlene McGown, all of Houston; brothers, Mallory Edwards and Preston Edwards, both of Houston; sister, Senora Jefferson of Houston; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
