Funeral services for Horace “Boots” Hill, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Hill died Sept. 8, 2003 in an Eagle Lake hospital.

Margaret Varela

Funeral services for Margaret Varela, 80, of Wharton, were held Tuesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary service was held Monday, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Varela died Sept. 7, 2003, in a Wharton nursing home after an extended illness. She was born Jan. 10, 1923, in Refugio, the daughter of the late Carlos and Maria Guadalupe Martinez Sedillo.
She had lived in Wharton for the last 20 years and was a former resident of Houston. She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Survivors include, daughter and son-in-law, Elma and Johnny Samora Sr. of Wharton; son, Joe Galvan; sisters, Louisa Gaona of El Campo, Maria Villareal of Angleton, Lupe Gaona of Wharton and Janie Compian of Wharton; brothers, Mike Sedillo of Lane City and Manuel Sedillo Sr. of Wharton; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Christina Valdez, and brother, Ignacio Sedillo.

If desiring, memorials may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Avenue, Wharton, Texas 77488.

John White

Funeral services for John T. White Jr., 71, of East Bernard, were held Tuesday in Rosenberg.
Mr. White died Sept. 6, 2003.

He was a member of IBEW Local Union No. 716.

Survivors include wife, Betty White of East Bernard; son and daughter-in-law, Schuyler and Connie White of Sugar Land; daughter and son-in-law, Nanette and Don Laas of Katy; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dinah Bowers

Dinah Jean Bowers was born Sept. 16, 1939, in Wharton County to Ruby Bowers Gordon. While her mother pursued her higher education, Mrs. Bowers lived with god-parents Henry and Cordelia Johnson in Glen Flora.

She attended T.L. Pink School in Glen Flora, Travis State School and Richmond State School. Later in life she moved to the Felice Swartz Group Home in Schulenberg, where she lived a wonderful and fulfilled life.

Four years ago, she moved to Austin to live with her aunt, Jessie Bowers Pinkney, and near her cousins Leroy and Harriett Jones.

After her health declined, she moved to the Sagebrook Assisted Living Center where she expired on Nov. 15, 2003.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at New Mount Olive Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmie Wright officiating. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Allen Kovar

Funeral Services for Allen C. Kovar were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. John Kunnathukuzhy officiating. Pallbearers were Daniel Jansky, Michael Gebert, Michael Ferguson, Greg Kucera, Mark Kucera and Nelton Schulz. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Allen C. Kovar, 85, left this world peacefully at The Cornerstone Hospital in Webster on Thursday, Nov. 13. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Kovar, in October of 1999.

Mr. Kovar was born on April 21, 1918, in Fayetteville to Louis and Frances Cmajdalka Kovar.
He attended school in Fayetteville. Mr. Kovar entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the U.S., New Guinea and the Southern Philippines. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Purple Heart Medal, World War II Victory Medal and an American Theater Service Medal. Mr. Kovar was discharged in 1945 with the rank of staff sergeant.

After his Army service he came to Wharton and worked for McGlothen Buick Company. Mr. Kovar also worked for and retired from the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America in Wharton.

He was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church. After retirement Mr. Kovar continued to be an avid fisherman and enjoyed working in his yard with his flowers and always had a small garden.
Mr. Kovar is survived by his brother and sisters-in-law, Charles and Bernice Kovar of Lafayette, La., and Goldie Kovar of Fayetteville; step-son, Roland Gebert of Houston; grandchildren, Terrie Ferguson and husband, Michael, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Michael Gebert and wife, Sandra, of Alvin; and great-granddaughter, Megan Gebert of Alvin. He also has several nieces and nephews who survive.

If desiring, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 204 Second Street, Wharton, TX 77488; or to Holy Family Catholic Church, 2011 Briar Lane, Wharton, TX 77488.

George Kulcak

Funeral services for George Joe Kulcak, 77, of Needville, were held Saturday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Needville. Interment followed at Davis Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Rosenberg.

Mr. Kulcak died Nov. 11, 2003, in Brazoria. He was born Jan. 24, 1926, in Needville to Joe F. and Annie Kolenovsky Kulcak.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Florine Urbanek Kulcak; one daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and August Vacek of East Bernard; sister, JoAnn Kulcak Hozek of Houston; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Ervin Muegge

Funeral services for Ervin Charles “E.C.” Muegge, 75, of Glen Flora, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Muegge died Nov. 18, 2003, at his residence.

Nola Stone

Graveside services for Nola Cook Stone, 88, of Victoria, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Paul Jones, minister of the Abell Street Church of Christ, officiating.
Mrs. Stone died Nov. 18, 2003, in Victoria. She was born Sept. 16, 1915, in Granger to Herman and Katie Lee Cook.

She had been a dietary clerk at De Tar Hospital until her retirement and she was a member of the church of Christ. Mrs. Stone was preceded in death by her husband, Hugo Stone, parents, Herman Cook and Katie Lee Goss; son Kenneth E. Stone; sisters Lorene Lowe and Katie G. Kemp and brother Edward Glenn Cook.

Survivors include daughters, Virginia Hamman and Evelyn Argabright; sister, Edris Toney of Wharton; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Rosell Baines

Funeral services for Rosell Baines, 62, of Wharton will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. B.B. Willis officiating. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery.
Ms. Baines died Feb. 3, 2004, at CLC Lexington Place. She was born April 7, 1941, in Wharton to Sherman Bledsoe and Eunice Rogers.
Survivors include mother, Eunice Rogers of Wharton; son: Keith Baines of Odessa; daughters, Gaylen Baines of Houston, Leslie Holmes of Atlanta, Ga., and Kimberly Jackson of Houston; brother, Henry Rogers of Wharton; sisters: De Joyce Anderson, Wilma Johnson, Deloris Curtis, Estell Gibson and Willie C. Baines, all of Wharton, and Frankie Moseley of Los Angeles, Calif.; and 9 grandchildren.

Eunice Rogers

Funeral services for Eunice Rogers, 98, of Wharton, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. B.B. Willis officiating. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Rogers died Sept. 18, 2006, at Avalon Place. She was born July 26, 1908, in Wharton to Thorn and Lucy Phoenix Rogers.

Survivors include son, Henry Rogers of Rosenberg; daughters, Willie B. Baines of Wharton, Frankie Mosley of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., De Lois Curtis, De Joyce Anderson, and Estelle Gibson, all of Wharton, and Wilma Jean Johnson of Houston; 53 grandchildren, 122 great-grandchildren and 70 great-great-grandchildren.

Alberta Smith

Alberta Smith died Sept. 19, 2006, following a long illness in Houston.

Mrs. Smith was born in Glen Flora to the late Ned B. Robertson and Geraldine Robertson.

Wake service will be Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home in Houston. The funeral will be held Monday at Augustina Church in Houston. Burial follows in Veterans Cemetery.

Henry Stolle

Henry John Stolle, age 95, of Wharton, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, in a Wharton Hospital following an extended illness. He was born on Dec. 27, 1910, in Fayette County, the son of the late John F. Stolle and Millie Christensen Stolle.

Mr. Stolle was a longtime resident of Wharton and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. He married Vlasta Mary Danek on Nov. 10, 1931, in Wharton and she preceded him in death on March 29, 1999. Mr. Stolle was also preceded in death by two brothers, Elo Stolle and Alfred C. Stolle. He was a farmer and rancher all of his life. Mr. Stolle was a former member of the ASCS Committee and served as a Trustee for Wharton Independent School District from 1947 until 1960. He was a member of the Wharton County Sheriff’s Auxiliary which was formed by H. R. “Mike” Flournoy and helped build the first Little League baseball field in Wharton.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Roger Hawes officiating.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Ann Stolle of Wharton; grandsons, Keith Stolle of Wharton, Geoffrey Stolle and wife, Sarah of Lincoln, Neb.

Pallbearers are Keith Stolle, Geoffrey Stolle, James Ferguson, B. J. Konvicka, Elo Stolle and Joe Stolle.
Honorary pallbearers are Charles Briggs, Mack Malone, Edward Gordon, Vernon Ullmann, Vernon East, Verlie Sherrill, Edward Stolle, Irvin Ullmann, Joe Mask, A. J. Stolle, Jimmy Ferguson, Ed Korenek, Dr. Merrell Barfield Jr., Houston Plunkett and all of his many close friends and neighbors.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to a church or charity of personal choice.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Erlinda Torres

Erlinda G. Torres, age 64, of Wharton died Monday, Sept. 18, 2006, in a Webster hospital following an extended illness. She was born on Dec. 8, 1941, in Lampasas, the daughter of the late Albert Garza and Paula Rodriguez Garza.

Mrs. Torres has been a resident of Wharton since 1964 and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton. She married Andrew Gomez Torres on May 12, 1957, in Lampasas, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 1994. Mrs. Torres was also preceded in death by one daughter and one sister. She was a homemaker.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, at Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Carlos Lynch officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Dolores and Steve D’Amore of Elverson, Pa., and Christine Torres of Vidor; sons and daughters-in-law, King and Sandra Torres of Houston, Mike Torres of Wharton, Danny Torres of Glen Flora and Andrew and Anita Torres Jr. of Crossville, Tenn.; brothers, Albert Garza and Zaragosa Garza, both of Lampasas, and Frank Garza of Austin; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Chris D’Amore, Michael Torres, Andrew Torres III, Danny Torres Jr., Joey Torres, Brian Torres, King Torres Jr. and Ken Torres.

James Fifer

Funeral services for James Forrest Fifer, 64, of Walnut Springs, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Stephenville with Rev. Sam McClain officiating. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at Glenwood Cemetery in Crockett.
Mr. Fifer died Feb. 4, 2004, at Goodall-Witcher Hospital in Clifton after a short battle with cancer. He was born Sept. 19, 1939, in Dever, Colo., to the late John E. and Echo Maxine Fifer.
He was a teacher and coach for more than 30 years in Wharton, Plano and Walnut Springs. Mr. Fifer was a lifelong soldier having served in the U.S. Navy and 49th Battalion from age 17 to 60.
Survivors include wife, Judy Fifer; sons, Kenneth James Fifer and James “Tad” Forrest Fifer II; daughter-in-law, Amy Therese Fifer; brother, John Fifer Jr.; sister, Echo Mason; step-sons, Danny Caudle and Monty Pack; 1 granddaughter and 2 step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas R. Fifer; son, Kenneth Edward Fifer; and daughter, Margaret Lynn Fifer.

Charles Jackson

Funeral services for Charles Jackson, 66, of Texas City, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Greater New Prospect Baptist Church in Needville with Rev. L. Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Peaceful Rest Cemetery in Wharton.
Mr. Jackson died Jan. 30, 2004.
He has relatives in Wharton.
