Tommy Metcalf

Louis Thomas “Tommy” Metcalf, age 83, of Wharton, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004 in Wharton. He was born on Sept. 29, 1920, in Wharton, the son of the late Louis Terrel Metcalf and Beatrice Kemp Metcalf.
Mr. Metcalf was a graduate of Wharton High School and a lifelong resident of Wharton. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Metcalf married Opal Dell Ingle on Dec. 6, 1941 in Edna. She preceded him in death on Jan. 1, 1996. He worked as a machinist for Texasgulf Sulphur Co. for 40 years prior to retiring in 1982. Mr. Metcalf was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wharton and the Wannabe Sunday School Class. He loved gardening, repairing small machinery and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Mack Mathis and Rev. Orville Roberts officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include nieces, Patsy Cox of El Campo, Nancy Zupec of El Campo, Carolyn Strnadel of Port Comfort and Linda Ingle of Houston; nephew, Grady Ingle of Rockport; and special friend, Billie Jones of Wharton. Numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews also survive.
Pallbearers were Lynn Cox, Charles Borak, Tommy Lee Cox, Grady Ingle Jr., Larry Wayne Kotulek and Harold McVey.
Honorary pallbearers were Lonnie Garcia, Bailey Williams, Dr. Keith Dowell, Ray Reed, Gene Frankum and all other members of the Wannabe Sunday School Class.
If desiring, memorials may be made to the charity of personal choice.

Frank Mican

Funeral services for Frank Mican, 88, of Hungerford, were held Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004 at 10 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry C. Rachunek celebrating the funeral mass and rite of committal. Interment was in St. John Cemetery in Hungerford.
Serving as pallbearers were Bennie Orsak, Daniel Orsak, David Minks, J.D. Mican, Gilbert Mican and Christopher Mican.
Honorary pallbearers were Michael Banse and Jonathan Mican.
Mr. Mican was born in East Bernard, to parents Anton and Elizabeth Krejcicek Mican. He was reared in the Hungerford area and attended school there and in East Bernard. Mr. Mican married Isabel Okruhlek on Oct. 23, 1939. A farmer all his life, he also made sausage for many people. Mr. Mican was a member of the Knights of Columbus, K.J.T. and St. John Catholic Church. He died on Monday Feb. 2, 2004, in Hungerford.
He is survived by his wife, Isabel Mican of Hungerford; daughters, Agnes Minks and husband Charlie of East Bernard and Bridget Stunz and husband David of Boling; son, Michael Mican and wife Betty Jo of East Bernard; grandchildren, Tricia Banse and husband Michael, David Minks and wife Susan, Tiffany Zapalac and husband Jason, Christopher Mican and Jonathan Mican; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Alicia, Jacob, Luke, J.J. and Brandon; brother, Anton Mican Jr. and wife Josie; sister-in-law, Irene Mican; and brothers-in-law, Charlie Orsak and Ike Twardowski. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Elizabeth Mican; daughter, Rita Mican; brothers, Victor, Henry and Pete Mican; sisters, Mary Orsak, Martha Twardowski and Lillian Knippa.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Knesek Family Funeral Chapels in Wallis.

Ellis Allen

Funeral services for Ellis Stanley Allen, 77, of Houston, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Pat H. Foley & Company Funeral Home in Houston with Rev. David Barclay officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Columbia Cemetery in West Columbia. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Pat H. Foley & Company Funeral Home, 1200 W. 34th Street in Houston.

Mr. Allen died March 25, 2004. He was born Dec. 25, 1926, in Elida, N.M., to the late Ellis Oscar and Hattie Mae Ewing Allen.

He was a property tax consultant, founding member of TAPTP and a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include wife, Mildred Donihoo Allen; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn Wells, Linda and Johnny Butterfield and Susan and Don Averre; sons, James Ellis and Chris Weber; five grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Murl Kay, Dorothy and Frederick Bertram and Ann and David Foster; and other relatives in Wharton.

Peggy Wicke

Funeral Mass for Peggy Wicke, 63, of Rosenberg, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 29, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. Rev. Dan Warden will officiate at the services. Visitation will be from 5 until 9 p.m. Sunday, March 28, in the Chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg with a rosary being recited at 7 p.m.
Mrs. Wicke was born Jan. 9, 1941, in Richmond to Lee Vyvial and Annie Bednar Vyvial. She passed away March 24, 2004, in Houston. Mrs. Wicke is preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Annie Vyvial.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Charles Wicke, of Rosenberg; children, Deborah “Debbie” Korenek and husband John Lee Jr. of East Bernard, Darryl Wicke of Richmond and Duane Wicke of Rosenberg; grandchildren, Jacob and Jonah Korenek, both of East Bernard; sister, Margie Patterson of Houston; brothers, Lee Vyvial of Houston and Jerry Vyvial of Rosenberg; and numerous other relatives and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, for those wishing, donations may be made in Mrs. Wicke’s memory to the Holy Rosary School Fund, 1408 James Street, Rosenberg, TX 77471; the Holy Rosary Catholic Church Organ Fund, 1416 George Street, Rosenberg, TX 77471; or the Holy Cross Catholic Church Bell Tower Fund, P.O. Box 1325, East Bernard, TX 77435.

Martha Bradshaw

Funeral services for Martha Mary Bradshaw, 57, of Houston, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Camp Zion Rising Star Baptist Church with Rev. M. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Zion Cemetery.

Mrs. Bradshaw died May 10, 2004, at Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston. She was born Oct. 24, 1946, in Wharton to Herman and Dorothy Mae Howard Bradshaw Sr.

Survivors include son, Edward Bradshaw of Houston; brothers, Herman Bradshaw Jr. of Glen Flora, Carl Bradshaw of Angleton, Glen Bradshaw of Wharton, Stan Bradshaw and Anthony Bradshaw, both of Houston; sisters, Ruby Bradshaw Rasmus, Debra Bradshaw and Sharon Davis, all of Houston; and two grandchildren.

Ardath Dotson

Ardath “Art” Rayburn Dotson, 87, retired real estate broker, died unexpectedly on May 12, 2004, at Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton, Va.

Mr. Dotson was born in McKinney. He graduated from high school in Wharton in 1935 and from Sam Houston University in 1942. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served four years in Alaska. After discharge he went to linotype school in New York and spent the next 20 years in the printing business. Mr. Dotson received his real estate broker’s license in 1967 and continued in real estate until his retirement in 2002. In 2002 he and his wife, Bobbie, moved to Warrenton, Va., to be close to family. In retirement Ardath and Bobbie loved exploring the Virginia countryside, playing on his computer and e-mailing old school buddies and playing with his six great-grandchildren.

Survivors include wife, Bobbie Cole Dotson of Warrenton, Va.; son and wife, Billy and Pattie Cole of Amissville, Va.; son and wife, Gordon and Billie Jo Shelton of New Braunfels,; son-in-law, Chuck Kleebauer of Orem, Utah; sister, Mildred Davis of Wharton; nephew and wife, Tim and Vivian Davis, Katy; grandchildren, Lt. Col. Kevin and Janice Cole of Honolulu, Hawaii; Brett Kleebauer of Chicago, Ill.; Kristen and Matt Buckwalter of Farmington, Con.; great-grandchildren, Preston, Trent and Spencer Cole, Chase Kleebauer, Courtney and Robbie Buckwalter.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 19, at 11 a.m. at the Bethel United Methodist Church, 6903 Blantyre Road, Warrenton, Va. 20187.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church, Warrenton, Va.

Marjorie Muhlhausen

Funeral services for Marjorie Cordelia “Muhly B” Muhlhausen, 85, of Wharton, were held Friday at Wharton Funeral Home with Doug Warfel officiating. Private graveside services followed at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Mrs. Muhlhausen died May 11, 2004, in a Wharton Nursing Home following an extended illness. She was born on Feb. 13, 1919, in Oklahoma City, Okla., the daughter of the late Harry Jones and Julia Ragland Jones.

She had been a resident of Wharton since 1940 and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Mrs. Muhlhausen married Bennie Lee Muhlhausen on Feb. 16, 1940, in Bay City. She worked as a sales clerk with Sears & Roebuck and in 1962 she opened the original Montgomery-Wards Store in Wharton. Mrs. Muhlhausen and fellow church members made and sent quilts to missionaries overseas. She was preceded in death by three brothers.

Survivors include her husband, Bennie Muhlhausen of Wharton; son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Donna Muhlhausen of Wharton; sister, Helen Marie Parker of Edna; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Henrietta Barta

Henrietta Marie Barta, age 74, of Bonus, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at her residence following a sudden illness. She was born on April 27, 1930, in Shiner, the daughter of the late John Svatek and Angelina Hajek Svatek.

Mrs. Barta was a former longtime resident of Wharton prior to moving to Bonus in 1954. She was a graduate of Wharton High School and in 1951 she received her nursing certification from St. Joseph’s Nursing School. She married John E. Barta Jr. on Nov. 26, 1951, in Wharton. He preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 1993. Mrs. Barta was employed for 40 years as a registered nurse with Gulf Coast Medical Center until her retirement in 1991. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters.

She was well-known for a passionate devotion to her profession. Although a woman of few words, she loved those close to her with a passion, leaving behind surviving siblings and children to pass on her legacy of an all encompassing love and devotion for one another.

Funeral mass services will be held 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with co-celebrants Rev. Joe Vrana and Rev. Joe Koebel officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake. Wake services were held Tuesday evening at the Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating.

Survivors include her daughters, Rebecca Koenig and husband, Scott, of Denton, Patricia Brown and husband, Gary, of Austin and Jennifer Johnson and husband, Stephen, of Austin; son, Michael Barta and wife, Marilyn, of Bay City; sisters, Agnes Labay of Nada, Janice Toman of Rosenberg and Bernadette Toman of Rosenberg; brothers, Johnnie Svatek of Wharton, George Svatek of Temple, Tony Svatek of Rosenberg, Laddie Svatek of Wharton, Jody Svatek of Wharton, David Svatek of Rosenberg, Tommy Svatek of Sugar Land and Billy Svatek of Needville; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by a son, John E. Barta III and by brothers, Jimmy and Benjamin Svatek.

Pallbearers were her brothers.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton.

Max Hoffman

Graveside services for Max Richard Hoffman III, 73, of Alvin, were held Sunday at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Gene Tipton.

Mr. Hoffman died July 8, 2004, in Houston. He was born Dec. 23, 1930, to Max and Mary Jones Hoffman II in Iago.

He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Alvin and was an Alvin resident for the past 40 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Wilda Jean Kennedy Hoffman.

Survivors include daughter, Michealee Hoffman Franz of Alvin; son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Karen Hoffman of Alvin; brother and sister-in-law, Don and Jane Hoffman of Bay City; sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and A.C. Shelton of Wharton; sisters-in-law, Nora Beth Stone and Louise G. Smith, both of Bay City; four grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Morris

Mary Elaine Morris, age 78, of El Campo, passed away on July 12, 2004, in Wharton. She was born Dec. 26, 1925, in Smithville, to the late Adolph and Helen Evicic Zimmerhanzel. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Morris is survived by her husband, Jesse Morris of El Campo; sons, Larry E. Morris and wife, Carol, of Rockport, James Morris and wife, Tamara, of Wharton; grandchildren, Chad Morris and Kimberly Morris; and brothers, Stanley Zimmerhanzel of Kovar, Anton Zimmerhanzel of Smithville and Alvin Zimmerhanzel of Giddings. She was preceded in death by her parents and nine brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo with Rev. Don Storey officiating. Interment will be at Oaklawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers are A.C. Rooker Jr., Edward Patik, Donald Beal, Ronald Wittig, William Vaclavik and Charles Mazel.

Memorial donations in memory of Mary Morris may be made to Hospice Support, Inc., P.O. Box 1417, El Campo, TX 77437; or Wharton Manor Nursing Home, 418 N. Rusk, Wharton, TX 77488.

Pauline Amaro

Pauline Hernandez Amaro, age 89 of Wharton, died Tuesday, September 28, 2004 in Wharton. Rosary services will be today, Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Wharton Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be Thursday, Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with Father Charles Lynch, CSB, officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 1 at the San Fernando Cemetery in San Antonio.

Dorothy Mae Guin

Funeral services for our loving wife and mother, Dorothy Mae Guin, age 77 of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at Peace Tabernacle Church in Wharton with Rev. Charles Fisher officiating, Rev. Guy Broadway and Rev. Leon Cross assisting. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Visitation was held Tuesday evening at Peace Tabernacle Church.
Dorothy passed away September 26, 2004 in her home following an extended illness. She was lovingly cared for by her husband, her daughters, and her provider, Margaret Perez. Mrs. Guin was born May 5, 1927 in Lane City to Earl Hopper and Myrtle Weaver Hopper.

Survivors include her husband, Oard Harold Guin of Wharton; daughters, Diane Lockhart and husband Archie of Fort Stockton, and Sharon Phillips and husband Thomas Lee of Pittsburg; grandchildren, Jennifer Hightower, Deanna Parkinson, Karen Phillips, Brian Phillips, Tracy Lockhart and Kimberly Lockhart; great-grandchildren, Madison and Preston Hightower and Carson and Alix Parkinson; sister, Ellen Galloway of Victoria; brothers, Henry Hopper of Avinger, Bobby Hopper of Pearland and Daniel Ray Hopper of Friendswood.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lois Toll; brothers, James Hopper and Earl Hopper, Jr.; and grandson, Michael Lockhart.
She married Oard Harold Guin on April 11, 1947 in Boling. She was a Tupperware sales lady. She loved doing things for her church, especially making peanut brittle and pizza. She was also a volunteer at Share.

Pallbearers are Brian Phillips, Tracy Lockhart, Danny Hopper, Jr., Mike Craft, Jeff White and Chase Fisher. Honorary pallbearers are Frank Stains, Ricky White, Ronnie Meyers and Gerald Gage.
If desiring, memorials may be made to Peace Tabernacle Church, 1416 N. Alabama Rd., Wharton, TX 77488. Arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Jesus Daniel Mata

Jesus Daniel Mata, infant, of Wharton, died Sunday, September 26, 2004 in Wharton. Arrangements are under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home.

Louis Navratil

A funeral mass for Louis Anton Navratil, age 80 of Wharton, was held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 27, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father John Kunnathukuzhy officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A wake service was held at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Wharton Funeral Home.
He died on Friday, September 24, 2004 in an El Campo nursing home. He was born on February 23, 1924 in Wharton, the son of Anton Louis and Mary Chumchal Navratil.
Mr. Navratil married Annie Slansky on Nov. 3, 1942 in Frydek, Texas. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army. He owned and operated Louis Western Wear and Louis Shoe Service until retiring in 1998. He was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He was also a 45-year member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of SPJST and the Rotary Club. He was an amateur ham radio operator and loved Czech music.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Navratil of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Don Brown of Houston, Ludmila and Thomas Gramann of Houston, Jean and Greg Carlson of Milwaukee, Wis. and Janet and Mark Tanner of Dallas; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lasta Longoria.
If desiring, memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church, 2011 Briar Lane, Wharton, TX 77488.

Texana Thompson

Funeral services for Texana Thompson of San Antonio, formerly of Wharton, will be held Saturday, October 2, at 11 a.m. at Rising Star Baptist Church in Spanish Camp. Rev. Clarence Owens will officiate and burial will follow in the Camp Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be held October 1, from 1 to 9 p.m. and the family will receive friends and others from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mrs. Thompson died September 24, 2004, at her residence in San Antonio. She was born March 14, 1928 in Wharton to Sherman and Fanny Mae Owens Lockridge. She was a Baptist by faith and a homemaker.
Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Marie Walker and Leta Jeanette Thompson of San Antonio, Peggy Lois Thompson, Verna Mae Leaks and Darlene Woods of Houston, Emma Loretta Galicia of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Sons, Joe Isaac Thompson of Wharton, Thomas Robert Thompson of Spanish Camp; sister Maxine Aubert of Los Angeles, Calif.; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
One grandchild, two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death. Arrangements are by Pierce Boone Funeral Home.
