Walter W. York II

Funeral services for Walter William “Bill” York II, age 22, of Wharton, were held Monday, Sept. 27, 2004 at New Life Assembly of God Church in El Campo. Rev. Danny Robert and Rev. Jim Lane officiated. Interment followed at Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo directed by Triska Funeral Home.
Bill York died September 24, 2004. He was born in Wharton October 26, 1981 to Bill York and Tina Kimbro.

Survivors include his wife, Monika Davis of Wharton, mother Tina Kimbro of Louisiana, father and step-mother Bill and Maria York of Boling; daughter, Devin York of Wharton; sons Dillon and Dustin York of Wharton; sisters, Sandra Moore of Bryan, Brenda Biegel of Eagle Lake, Glenda Legler of Wharton, Melinda Labay of El Campo, Krista and Karissa York of Boling; brothers, Robert and Timothy York of El Campo, Arturo Perez of Boling; and two grandmothers.
Memorials may be made to Bill York II Children’s Fund.

Ada Buff
Funeral services for Ada Olena Buff, 93, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Wharton Funeral Home. Friends may call for visitation from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Buff died Nov. 29, 2004, in Wharton.

Freddy Carlton

Funeral services for Freddy “Coach” Wayne Carlton, 61, of Texas City, were held Sunday at Baypoint Church with Bobby Gass officiating.

Mr. Carlton died Nov. 25, 2004. He was born Feb. 5, 1943, in Corpus Christi. He was a baseball coach in Wharton from 1971 until 1973 and took the Tigers to the state championship tournament.

Survivors include wife of 40 years, Pattie Smith Carlton; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Rudy Morin of Santa Fe; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Stacey Carlton of Lake Jackson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Cran and Ivon Carlton of Bryan and Lonnie and Betty Carlton of Oklahoma City, Okla. and; sister, Sue Warren of Corpus Christi; sister-in-law, Inez Carlton of Odessa; two granddaughters and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jewel and Clyde Carlton, and brother, Ken Carlton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial fund at any Southwest Bank or sign up to become an organ donor.

Cambri Garza

Funeral services for Cambri Grace Garza, infant daughter of Travis and Kelly Garza of Wharton, were held Nov. 14 at Wharton Funeral Home. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Cambri was born Oct. 14, 2004, and died Nov. 11, 2004.

She is survived by her parents; grandmothers, Margaret Crowson of Hungerford and Karen Garza of Wharton; grandfather, Nick Garza of Wharton; great-grandparents, aunts and uncles, great-aunts and uncles, and numerous cousins. Cambri was preceded in death by her grandfather, Tom Crowson, of Houston.

Regina Genzer

Funeral services for Regina Diane Genzer, 28, of Wharton, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call for visitation after 5 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church and a rosary will follow at 7 p.m. at the church.

Mrs. Genzer died November 28, 2004, in an automobile accident.

Gladys Kurtz

Gladys Victoria Kurtz died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004. She was born on May 29, 1920, in Wharton, the daughter of the late Ed and Lilly Janssen Brandt.

Mrs. Kurtz married Leroy B. Kurtz on Dec. 24, 1941, in Wharton. She was a wife, mother and homemaker for the last 62 years. They lived in Houston for 41 years, returning to Wharton in 1982. Mrs. Kurtz was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy on April 22, 2004. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters.

Our mama was a cherished member of her entire family. She always greeted you with a smile, a kiss and a hug. Her strength came from her bond and personal contact with her family and friends. Her grand and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy B. Kurtz; grandsons, Aaron Frank Kurtz and Jeffrey Lee Graves and brothers, Walter Brandt, Alfred Brandt and Ed Brandt.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Carol Lee Campbell and husband, Dennis of Houston, and Marie Vincent and husband, Rick of Friendswood; son and daughter-in-law, Frank Allen Kurtz and wife, Becky of Pearland; sister, Doris Giesalhart of Poth; brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Ida Brandt of Houston; brother-in-law, Lloyd Kurtz of Wharton; sister-in-law and dear friend, Josephine Brandt of El Campo; sister-in-law, Muriel Brandt of Illinois; grandchildren, Donna Lott and husband, Billy, Kim Campbell, Josh Graves and wife, Amy, Julia Vincent, Andy Smith, Amy Kurtz and Cristy Lujan and husband, Jorge; great-grandchildren, Brian Lott, Ashley Lott, Karsen Graves, Carli Graves and Jorge Lujan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. Interment will follow in the Wharton City Cemetery. A rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at Wharton Funeral Home. Friends may call for visitation from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be Sonny Kurtz, Roy Kurtz, James Bruce, Wayne Brandt, Glenn Brandt, Ray Kacer, Bert Lee Hosea and Robert Newlin.

Honorary pallbearers are James Turner, Marcus Melnar, Sonny Giesalhart, Larry Brandt and Bill Hudgins.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home, 515 Boling Highway, Wharton, TX 77488.

Martin Hernandez

Funeral services for Martin Hernandez, 58, of Boling are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Hernandez died Nov. 29, 2004, in a Wharton hospital after a sudden illness.

Willard White

Funeral services for Willard White, 84, of Wharton, were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary was recited Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. White died Nov. 25, 2004, at his residence following a brief illness. He was born March 17, 1920, in East Bernard, the son of the late Tom White and Gladys Odom White.

He had been a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford. Mr. White was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. He was also a member of the VFW. Mr. White married Isabel Leona Stolle and she preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 2004. He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Teresa Lofton and Loretta Mata, and one sister and two brothers.

Survivors include step-sons, Laddie Prihoda of Wimberly and Eddie Prihoda of Lake Jackson; brothers, Billy Joe White of Splendora, Harold White and Ruben White, both of Wharton, and Danny White of El Campo; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to St. John’s Catholic Church, P.O. Box 121, Hungerford, TX 77448; or the American Cancer Society, 204 2nd Street, Wharton, TX 77488.

Mattie Durley

Funeral services for Mattie Mae Durley, 88, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Beulah CME Church in Pittsburg with Rev. C. Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home and from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Home in Pittsburg.

Mrs. Durley died March 1, 2005, at Avalon Place. She was born Dec. 1, 1916, in Pittsburg to Christopher Columbus and Majie Patilla Taylor.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, James and Stella Durley of Wharton, Bose and Carrie Durley Jr. of Channel View and Barbara Durley of Beaumont; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Eugene Koehl

Eugene Emil “Paw-Paw” Koehl, 78, of Hamshire, died Monday, March 12, 2006, at Memorial Hermann Baptist Beaumont Hospital.

A native of Shiner and a resident of Hamshire for 47 years, he was retired from Texas Gulf Sulphur and Benton Casing in Winnie. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus with St. Mary Catholic Church.

His daughter, Cynthia Koehl, and brother, Ernest Koehl, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Margaret Koehl, of Hamshire; daughters, Joyce Jannise and her husband Tommy of Anahuac and Janice Sowell and her husband Rodney of Fannett; grandchildren, Steve Jannise and his wife Audra and Carrie Villemez and her husband Darren, all of Anahuac, Daina Cook and her husband Chris of Winnie, Becky Sowell of Clear Lake and Shelly Duke and her husband Tilford of Fannett; eight great-grandchildren, Garrett Villemez, Kaylie Villemez, Jared Jannise, Aimee Jannise, Darby Devillier, and Dustin Devillier all of Anahuac, and Paige Duke of Fannett and Mally Cook, of Hamshire; and brother, Edward Koehl of Oklahoma City, Okla.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fannett with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Winnie under the direction of Broussard’s Mortuary in Winnie. A rosary was recited 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at the mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hamshire-Fannett Foundation, P.O. Box 223, Hamshire, TX 77620.

Ned Jolley

Ned Frederick Jolley, 72, a longtime Paducah resident, passed away peacefully at is home surrounded by his family who he loved so much, Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at the First Baptist Church of Paducah with pastor Lyn Means and Talmadge Porter officiating. Interment followed in Paducah Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of Seigler Funeral Home.

Mr. Jolley was born in Henderson to William Frederick and Elbertie Deason Jolley. He learned and loved the farming way of life during his early childhood. In his early adult yeas he received his high school diploma and proudly served our country with the U.S. Army. After his tour of duty with the Army, Mr. Jolley became a dedicated law enforcement officer, spending most of his 39-year career as a deputy sheriff with the Wharton County Sheriff’s Department and he was an active member of the Texas Sheriff’s Association.

He also served for several years on the board of the Boling Water Commission and was a member of First Baptist Church. Mr. Jolley was a dedicated family man and loved spending time with his wife and children. He was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time. When he couldn’t hunt or fish he played dominoes.
Mr. Jolley was preceded in death by his parents and son, Michael Steven Jolley.

Those loved ones left to mourn his passing are his wife of 54 years, Laverne Havins Jolley; two sons, Thomas Frederick Jolley of Tyler and Jone Ned Jolley of Houston; brother, Joe Edd Jolley of Robstown; sister, Vinnie Lehew of Corpus Christi; five granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations made to the American Cancer Society or Childress Regional Home Health and Hospice.

Emma Behrens

Emma Jean Behrens, age 77, of East Bernard, passed away at Fort Bend Healthcare in Rosenberg on April 18, 2007, after 19 months recovering from a severe stroke. She could not speak and was paralyzed on her right side during this period. She was born on Dec. 1, 1929, in Newgulf, the daughter of the late George W. Chancey and Ora Anna Jones Chancey.

Mrs. Behrens is survived by her husband, Hugh C. Behrens of East Bernard; one son; Felix Charles Korenek Jr. of New York City; and one daughter and her husband, Patricia Behrens Martin and William Martin of Sugar Land; and her two grandchildren, Jacquelyn and Shelby Martin. She was also survived by three sisters and brothers-in-law, Jo Ann Melton of Goldsboro, N.C., Jeannette and Charles Banken of Henderson, Ken., and Adrienne and Howard Pfaff of Canton, N.C. Numerous loving nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Behrens was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Alan Korenek; brother, George Chancey Jr.; and sister, Norma Elaine Tasker.
Mrs. Behrens enjoyed serving her community, church and diocese through the years working and volunteering in many facets such as the Professional Secretaries International, Altar Society, CCD secretary and teacher, diocesan training committees, CYO sponsor, Rosenberg District Council of Catholic Women president, Galveston Houston Diocesan Council of Catholic Women president, Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, Sunday Home Ministry chairperson and most recently, Regent of Catholic Daughters of America Court St. Bernadette 1997 to 2001. She served two terms on the City Council of Angleton. She was an avid bridge and 42 player.
She was employed as a secretary and office assistant most of her adulthood and, at the age of 57 realized a lifetime goal of returning to college and becoming a registered nurse with a deep love for home health nursing.

Visitation will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard on Sunday, April 22, 2007, from 5 to 7 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.
Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 23, 2007, from Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with Rev. Don Ruppert and Rev. Tim Bucek con-celebrating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Frances Lawson

Frances Edith Lawson, 87, of Palacios died Sept. 27, 2002, at Kindred Hospital in Houston. She was born Oct. 8, 1924 in Globe, Ariz., to the late Joseph Alexis and Fannie Leah Patton Wamsley.

Mrs. Lawson was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she was the church organist from 1962- 1980 and was a resident of Palacios since 1961. She was a retired school teacher and taught in the Palacios School District from 1962-1980. Mrs. Lawson also was a member of Theta Chi Delta Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Athena Club.

Survivors include: daughter, Helen Frances Lawson of Bay City; son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Deborah Lawson of San Antonio; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry J. Lawson.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. John Episcopal Church with Rev. Jim Eli officiating. Interment will follow in the Palacios Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements with Palacios Funeral Home.

Birdie Shanklin-Nelson

Funeral services for Birdie Shanklin-Nelson, 98, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. Leo C. Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Pierce Boone Funeral Home.

Mrs. Nelson died Sept. 27, 2002. She was born April 17, 1904, in Wharton.
She was a housewife.

Survivors include sister, Ruth Shanklin-Andrews; children and their spouses, Andrew and Ernestine Nelson, Opal and Willie Taylor, Bob Nelson, Alfred Alpard and Johnnie Mae Nelson, Alma and Meredith Sidney and Eugene Wilson; 20 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
