Georgia Phoenix

Funeral services for Georgia Lee Phoenix, 102, of Glen Flora, will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Camp Zion/Rising Star Baptist Church with Rev. Ruiel Taylor III officiating. Burial will follow in New Prosperity/East Gate Cemetery in Sorrel. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Friday at East Gate Baptist Church.

Mrs. Phoenix died Jan. 18, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Sept. 26, 1900, in Wharton to Tom and Nora Johnson Lee.

She was a life long resident of Wharton County. Mrs. Phoenix worked as a seamstress. She was Baptist by faith and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star St. Roseway Chapter No. 102.

Survivors include sons, Lonnie Phoenix of Houston, Freddie Phoenix of Glen Flora and Eddie Gene Phoenix of Suisan, Calif; daughter, Nannie Ruth Johnson of Wharton; 35 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sons, Willie Wells, Tommie Phoenix, Vernon Phoenix, Austin Freddie Phoenix Jr. and Floyd Phoenix; daughters, Lula Mae Phoenix Ducrest, Dorothy Phoenix McClintock and Doris Phoenix; brother, Willie Stephens; sister, Leola Bryant; and step-sister, Cordelia Johnson.

Pallbearers are her grandchildren Michael Phoenix, Randy E. Phoenix, Tony E. Phoenix, Paul McClintock Phoenix, Kurt Phoenix, Larry Phoenix, James R. Phoenix, Maurice Phoenix, Lawrence Phoenix, Eddie L. Phoenix, Doug Phoenix and Wayne Edwards.

Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren Lonnie Phoenix, Eddie Gene Phoenix, Freddie Phoenix, James Henderson, Roselvelt Henderson, Frank Henderson, Lionel Phoenix, Josh Phoenix and Jessie Phoenix.

Funeral services are under the direction of Pierce Boone Funeral Home.

Sybil Shanks

Funeral services for Sybil Shanks, 66, of Wharton, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Wharton Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Shanks died Jan. 21, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center after an extended illness.

Mary Swanson

Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Swanson, 79, of El Campo, were held Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in El Campo with Rev. Sid Spiller officiating. Graveside services followed at Garden of Memories in El Campo.

Mrs. Swanson died Jan. 18, 2002. She was born March 3, 1923, in Fort Worth to the late Joe Reynolds and Hattie Mims Steele.

She was a homemaker and member of First United Methodist Church in El Campo.
Survivors include daughters, Jill Ann Thigpen of Wharton and Mary Jane Wendel of Wharton; son, Jack Swanson of Victoria; brother, Joe Reynolds Steele Jr. of Richmond; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Reynolds and Hattie Mims Steele; husband, F.D. Swanson Jr. on Feb. 27, 1989; and son, Robert Stacy Swanson.

Adeline T. Kughn

Adeline Thekla Kughn, age 82, of Wharton, died Thursday, March 21, 2003, in a Hillje nursing home following an extended illness. She was born on Jan. 14, 1921, in New Braunfels, the daughter of the late Albert Ferdinand Klatt and Rosalie Mathilda Kunde Klatt.

Mrs. Kughn had been a resident of Wharton County most of her life. She attended schools in New Braunfels, Seguin and Crescent. Mrs. Kughn was Lutheran by faith and formerly attended the Methodist Church in Glen Flora. She married Jake William Kughn on Jan. 1, 1950, in El Campo and he preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1988. Mrs. Kughn assisted her husband at the Taiton Feed Mill and with the family farm. Three brothers also preceded her in death, Raymond A. Klatt, Adelbert Klatt and Albertus Klatt; and one sister, Telka Treybig.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2003, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Cartwright officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Laverne Rose and Leroy Bacak of El Campo, Cathy Diane and Robert Cartwright of Alvin, Carol Ann and J. Mark Gresham of Wharton and Linda Faye and Abel Gonzales of Wallis; sisters and brother-in-law, Roma R. Stancliff of El Campo, Zora D. and Edmund Chaka of Wharton and Delrose A. Stevens of Wharton; brother and sisters-in-law, R.R. and Pauline Klatt of El Campo and Edna Guess of Hillje; grandchildren include L. James Bacak, Lachelle Pasak, Ryan Cartwright, Raymond Cartwright, Rachel Cartwright, Jennifer Hart, Lori Krpec, Amy Gresham, Savannah Gresham, Adam Gonzales, Kate Gonzales and Micah Gonzales; eight great-grandchildren also survive.

Pallbearers were James Cartwright, Hart Cartwright, Ryan Cartwright, Adam Gonzales, Melvin Klatt, Jerry Fabrygal, James Chaka, Al Klatt Jr. and Lloyd Klatt.

Honorary pallbearers were Christian Bacak, Bailey Pasak, Jacob Schulz, Shane Ryan, Jessica Hart, Kevin Krpec, Mycol Tong and Anthony Tong.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to: American Diabetes Association, 2400 Augusta Drive, Suite 420, Houston, Texas 77057, or Wharton County Library, 1920 N. Fulton, Wharton, Texas 77488 or a church or charity of personal choice.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Ramiro Mendoza

Funeral services for Ramiro Mendoza, 51, of Bay City, were held Tuesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Wharton City Cemetery. A rosary service was held Monday at Matthews Funeral Home.

Mr. Mendoza died March 23, 2003, in Hermann Hospital in Houston after an extended illness. He was born Jan. 15, 1952, in Rio Grande to Ignacio Mendoza and Eduvijes Diaz.

He was a lifelong resident of Bay City and married Tomasa Mendoza. Mr. Mendoza worked as a truck driver and was Catholic by faith.

Survivors include wife, Tomasa Mendoza; daugher, Mary Ann Mendoza; sons, Ramiro Mendoza Jr. and Roman Perez; sisters and brother-in-law, Lidia and Victor Bentacur, Julie Mendoza and Rosa Mendoza; brothers, Joe Mendoza, Miguel Mendoza and Rafael Mendoza.

Richard Seydler

Following cremation, private memorial services for Richard Warren Seydler, 80, of East Bernard, were held.

Mr. Seydler died March 21, 2003, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born on July 25, 1922, in El Campo, the son of the late Henry Seydler and Edna Kleckler Seydler.

He had been a lifelong resident of Wharton County living in East Bernard. Mr. Seydler married Ella Mae Hensley on July 31, 1942, in Wharton. He was a farmer and rancher since 1942.

Survivors include wife, Ella Mae Seydler of East Bernard; daughters and son-in-law, Geneva and Pat Viaclovsky of Wharton and Margaret Wall of Phoenix, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law, Harry and Nancy Seydler of East Bernard; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to: Hospice, 1102 N. Mechanic, Suite B, El Campo, Texas 77437.

Juanita Bowers
Memorial services for Juanita Bowers, 67, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Matthews Funeral Home.
Ms. Bowers died May 15, 2003.

Juanita Castro
Funeral services for Juanita Sosa Castro, 78, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home.
Ms. Castro died May 15, 2003.

Dorothy Johnson
Following cremation, a memorial services for Dorothy Mae Johnson, 73, of Killeen, will be held 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Little Concord Baptist Church with Rev. C. Jackson officiating.

Mrs. Johnson died May 15, 2003, at Metroplex Hospital in Killeen. She was born Feb. 17, 1930, in Wharton to Nook and Nannie Brown Jackson.

Survivors include father, Nook Jackson of Wharton; daughter, Ernestine Evans of Killeen; sons and daughters-in-law, Otis and Ann Jackson of S.W.

Lakeview, Wash., Lawrence Jackson and Roger and Viola Johnson, all of Wharton; sisters, Rosie Amboree of Corpus Christi, Ozie Armstrong of Wharton; brothers and sister-in-law, Willie Jackson of Corpus Christi, Edward and Jo Jackson of San Antonio, Cleopher Jackson of Wharton, Warren Jackson of Houston and Mose Jackson of Sweeny; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Pauline Ramirez
Pauline DeLeon Garcia Ramirez, age 62, of Wharton died Thursday, May 15, 2003, in Wharton. She was born on Nov. 7, 1940, in Boling, the daughter of the late Jesus Garcia and Maria Nives Garcia.

Mrs. Ramirez was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Wharton. She married Guadalupe Driscoll Ramirez on Jan. 11, 1957, in Wharton. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Funeral mass services will be held 9 a.m. today, Saturday, May 17, 2003 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Friday evening at the Wharton Funeral Home.

Survivors include her husband, Guadalupe Ramirez of Wharton; daughters, Mary E. Ramirez of Tyler, Gloria Garcia Ramirez of Austin and Martha Ramirez Flores of Wharton; sons, Lupe Ramirez Jr. of Wharton, Julius Garcia Ramirez of Bay City, David Garcia Ramirez of Wharton, Jesse Garcia Ramirez of Wharton, Joe Angel Garcia Ramirez of Bay City, James Garcia Ramirez of Wharton, Jimmie Garcia Ramirez of Wharton and Luis Garcia Ramirez of Austin; sister, Hilaria Lopez of Bay City; brothers, Daniel Garcia Sr. of Wharton, Frank Garcia of Pearland, Conrad Garcia of Wharton, Luis Garcia of Wharton and Pedro Guzman of Wharton; 31 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Maria Ramirez, and a son, Ruben Garcia Ramirez.

Pallbearers are Joe Ramirez, Jesse Ramirez, Simon Ramirez, Luis Garcia Ramirez, Eric Ramirez, Tim Ramirez, Daniel Garcia Sr. and Julius Garcia Ramirez.

Zora Doris Chaka

A funeral mass for Mrs. Zora Doris Chaka, 79, of Wharton, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. Burial will follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery in El Campo. Mrs. Chaka died late Sunday night in a Wharton Hospital following a brief illness.

Elcenner Cheatham

Funeral services for Elcenner Cheatham, 94, of Wharton, were held July 12 at New Mount Olive Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmie Wright officiating. Burial followed in New Mount Olive Cemetery.
Mrs. Cheatham died July 10, 2003 at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born June 29, 1909 in Mackay to James Henderson and Rosa Mitchell Hill. She had lived all her life in Wharton County, was a member of Order of Eastern Star and a homemaker. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include daughters, Rosa Martin of Brusly, Louisiana, Gladys James of Los Angeles, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Mary Lee Hill and brothers Jessie, Charlie, Lonzo, Morris and Oliver Hill.

Robert "Bobby" Dornak

Following cremation, a rosary/wake service Robert “Bobby” Dornak, 57, of Boling, will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at the Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 17 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Joe Vrana officiating.
Robert “Bobby” Dornak passed away Sunday, July 13 at his home in Boling. He was born Dec. 2, 1945 in Pledger, the son of John and Rosie Shimek Dornak.
He was a 1964 graduate of El Campo High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Texas A&I. He was a Veteran of the Vietname War having served in the United States Air Force. He married Linda Lee Brown on May 16, 1980 in Kingsville. Mr. Dornak worked for the Kleberg County Sheriff’s Dept. for 16 years as chief deputy, then for South Texas Nuclear Plant in Security for 11 years and then was self-employed as a carpenter for five years. He was a resident of Boling for the last 16 years and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Boling. Mr. Dornak was a member of the El Campo American Legion and VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Dornak of Boling; daughters and son-in-law, Bobbi Lynn and Wes Prince of San Antonio and Lilly Didear of Richmond; son and daughter-in-law, Shawn and Stephanie Didear of Boling; sisters, Norma Lee Treybig of Victoria, Florence Paladino of Lumberton and Bernice Buss of El Campo; brothers, Johnny Dornak of Wharton, Victor Dornak of El Campo and Jerome Dornak of El Campo; and 4 grandchildren, Trent Prince, Troy Prince, Richard Didear, and Kory Didear.
If desiring, memorials may be sent to the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Lalla Rookh Road., Boling, TX 77420.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Patricia Duran

Patricia Duran, 77, of Wharton, died Monday, July 14, 2003 in Wharton. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with Father Raymond Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Willie Jackson Jr.

Funeral services for Willie Jackson Jr., 56, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19 at Sand Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday July 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home in Wharton.
Mr. Jackson died July 13, 2003 in Rosenberg following a brief illness. He was born February 12, 1947 in Eagle Lake to May Lou Jackson. He had lived in Wharton County all his life. Mr. Jackson was married to Rita Bluntson and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He was a Viet Nam veteran. He is survived by his wife, Rita Bluntson Jackson; daughters Chaudie Jackson, LaKeisha Jackson and Brittany Flowers and three grandchildren.

A.J. Vasina

Funeral services for A.J. “Lefty” Vasina, 84, of Lissie, were held July 14 at Dulany Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Bill Ramsey, pastor of Lissie United Methodist Church officiating. Burial followed in Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake.
Mr. Vasina died July 11, 2003 at his residence. He was born February 11, 1919 , in Plum, Texas, to Joseph and Ludmilla Holik Vasina. He married Gladiola Hartman on March 4, 1946 at East Bernard and had been a resident of Lissie for 57 years. He was retired from Tennessee Gas Pipeline on July 1, 1982 after 32 years of service. He was a member of Lissie United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Gladiola Vasina of Lissie; daughter Marilyn Frank and husband Paul of Alpharetta, Ga.; sons Kenneth and Terry Vasina, both of Houston; sister Lydia Mechura, Rogers Ark.; 2 grandsons, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Vlasta Elolf and Mary Cervenka; brothers Joe and Jerry Vasina.

Charles Ervin White

Following cremation, Memorial Services for Charles Ervin White, 59, of Wharton will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2003 at the Chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Mack Matthys officiating. Mr. White died Monday, July 14, in Wharton following a brief illness.
