Ralph H. King

A memorial service for Ralph Harlan King, age 85 of Wharton, Texas, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 4, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in Wharton with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, at the V. A. Cemetery in Houston with Rev. Glenn Ferguson officiating.

Ralph King died Thursday September 30, 2004 in a Wharton Hospital following an extended illness. He was born on January 27, 1919 in Franklin, Texas the son of Wyatt King and Roxie Ferguson King.
He had been a resident of Wharton for the past year and was a former resident of Onalaska. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U. S. Army. He was a retired farmer. He married Dolores Ellen Feilner Brandel on November 11, 1993 in Brenham. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Survivors include his wife Dolores King of Wharton. One niece also survives.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, Texas 77488. Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Edward Krenek

Edward Alfred Krenek, age 67 of Wharton, died Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at the Methodist hospital in Houston, following an extended illness. He was born on July 7, 1937 in Wharton, Texas, the son of Peter Paul and Caroline Krenek.

Mr. Krenek graduated from East Bernard High School in 1956. He married Mary Ann Marek on October 29, 1960 in Hillje. He was a lifelong resident of Wharton County who worked as a farmer and rancher. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed dove, turkey and deer hunting and spending time with his grandkids “hunting” marbles. Edward served as a mentor to many young farmers in Wharton County. He loved country western music and collecting historic artifacts, and was always interested in Texas history and oil and gas exploration. He was very mechanically inclined and even invented and patented a special hay trailer.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, October 2, 2004 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Joe Vrana officiating. Interment will follow in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Hungerford. A wake service and rosary were held Friday evening in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Krenek of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Caryn and Dr. Brandan Hernandez of Austin, Monica and Tim Travis of Seabrook and Linda and Allen Carpenter of Houston; sisters, Doris Brandes of East Bernard and Dianne Calvo of Sugar Land; and grandchildren, Wyatt Travis, Caroline Carpenter, Rian Hernandez and Aidan Hernandez.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son, Marcel John Krenek.
Pallbearers will be Rocky Brandes, Wes Brandes, B.B. Krenek, Dennis Krenek, Gerard Krenek, Mark Krenek, Phillip Krenek and Tim Krenek. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Eric Bernicker, Dr. George Carrum, Dr. Helen Heslop, Dr. Sandeep Kodityal, Dr. Robert Krance, Dr. Jay Maran, Michael S. Oholendt and Dr. Uday Popat.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 5005 Mitchell Dale, Suite 115, Houston, TX 77092 or the Methodist Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 4384, Houston, Texas 77210-4384.

Gonzales Garza

Funeral services for Gonzales “Gonzalo” Garza, 82, of Boling, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Tuesday, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial follows in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary was recited Monday evening at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Garza died Nov. 19, 2004, in a Wharton hospital following an extended illness. He was born Dec. 22, 1921, in Edna, the son of the late Joe Garza and Cruz Montes Garza.

He had been a resident of Boling for the past 30 years and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boling. Mr. Garza married Lydia Rodriguez on Nov. 23, 1946, in Wharton. He worked as a farm laborer for most of his life. Mr. Garza was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Garza Jr. and Rosendo Garza.

Survivors include his wife, Lydia Garza of Boling; sisters, Mollie Garza and Amelia Rodriguez, both of Wharton, and Francis Cantero of Venus; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Hilaria Garza

Funeral services for Hilaria Garza, 88, of Hungerford, were held Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary was recited Sunday evening at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Garza died Nov. 18, 2004, in an El Campo hospital after an extended illness. She was born June 25, 1916, in Louisiana the daughter of the late Gomezino Garza and Maria Sefuentes Garza.

She had been a resident of Hungerford for the past 20 years and was Catholic by faith. Mrs. Garza was a retired homemaker. She was preceded in death by two sons, Salvador Ferrel and Mack Castillo and two brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Salud and Margaret Ferrel of Hungerford and Joe Castillo of El Campo; sisters, Paz Cordero of Wharton, Lidia Gonzales and Elida Gonzales, both of Houston; brothers, Gilbert Garza of Victoria, and Joe Garza of Sweeny; 14 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Margaret McMullen

Graveside services for Margaret Ellen Rhea McMullen, 58, of San Antonio, were held at 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, in Wharton City Cemetery with Paul Jones officiating.

Mrs. McMullen died Nov. 19, 2004, at her residence in San Antonio following an extended illness. She was born Nov. 4, 1946, in Paris, the daughter of the late Floyd R. Rhea and Jewel Gorden Rhea.

She was a graduate of Wharton High School, Wharton County Junior College and attended Sam Houston State University. Mrs. McMullen was a former resident of Wharton and had lived in San Antonio for the last 30 years. She was a former member of Abell Street Church of Christ.

Survivors include sisters, Gayle Rhea Barrett of Madisonville, Judy Rhea Barbour of Bandera and Mary Ann Rhea of Richmond; numerous nieces and nephews.

If desiring, memorials may be made to a charity of personal choice.

Lambert Stavena

Lambert Peter Stavena Sr., age 83, of Wharton, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, in Wharton. He was born on Aug. 12, 1921, in Fayette County, the son of the late Frank and Mary Novosad Stavena.

Mr. Stavena married Joy Adell Koonce on Nov. 14, 1964, in Houston. She preceded him in death on April 24, 1989. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army Air Corps. Mr. Stavena was a longtime employee of Brown & Root and worked as a carpenter prior to retiring in 1987. He was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. John Kunnathukuzhy officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provide by American Legion Post No. 87. A rosary and wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Wharton Funeral Home with Mr. Glenn Erdelt and Rev. John Kunnathukuzhy officiating.

Survivors include daughter, Debra Buzek of Clute; son and daughter-in-law, Lambert Stavena Jr. and wife, Vanessa, of Wharton; brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Nelga Stavena of Wharton; grandchildren, Patricia Clifton and husband, Steve, Joy Hayes and husband, Jason, Connor Stavena, Taylor Stavena, and Evan Stavena; great-grandchildren, Justin, Bailey, Darrin, Ethan and Mykala; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Stavena.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Stavena, Mike Dean, Steve Clifton, Jason Stavena, Connor Stavena and Taylor Stavena.

Vernon Hollingsworth

Vernon Hollingsworth, age 85, of Wharton, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, in a Wharton nursing home following a lengthy illness. He was born on July 29, 1921, in Liberty, son of the late William Jackson Hollingsworth and Oma Calumbach Hollingsworth.

Mr. Hollingsworth was reared in the Liberty County area and had attended Liberty Schools. He was a resident of Wharton since 1948 and was a member of First Baptist Church in Wharton, where he served as a deacon for many years. He was also a Master Mason in Lodge No. 621 AF & AM. Mr. Hollingsworth was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He married June Benton on May 30, 1942, in Liberty. Mr. Hollingsworth retired from the City of Wharton as director of public works in August 1986 after working there for more than 20 years. He was a longtime member of the Wharton City Council and the Wharton Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid fisherman, gardener and hunter of geese and deer. He really enjoyed coaching little league baseball, going square dancing, and traveling in his motor home.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at First Baptist Church in Wharton with the reverends Dale Pague, Mack Mathis and Lance Ousley officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, June Hollingsworth, daughters; Sharon Krenek and husband, Mickey of Spring and Velda Gilmore and husband, Wendel of Burnet; son, Larry Hollingsworth of Wharton; sister; Eva Simpson and husband, Bill, of Vidor; grandchildren, Brian Gilmore, Amy Thigpen, Alan Krenek, Andy Hollingsworth, Lisa Kelley; great-grandchildren, Madison Bell, Kayli Krenek and Austin Krenek. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Stella Sweezy; brothers, Irvin T., William S., George L., Sidney E. and R. Ellis Hollingsworth and daughter-in-law, Sherry Hollingsworth.
Pallbearers are Brian Gilmore, Alan Krenek, Andy Hollingsworth, Matt Thigpen, Eldon Benton and Merrick Kelley.

Honorary pallbearers are Pete Wishert, Tommy Reding, Don Fowler, Lane Johnston, Jerry Allen, Wilbur Degat, Dan Nelson, Jubal Cannon, Tad Simpson, Stewart Simpson, Bobby Sweezy, Buddy Whitmire, Fred Irle, Ronnie Hollingsworth, Jack Hollingsworth, and Leon Hollingsworth and the deacons of First Baptist Church.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the First Baptist Church, 507 North Fulton, Wharton, TX 77488; St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 207 Bob-O-Link, Wharton, TX 77488; or Hospice Support Inc. P.O. Box 1417, El Campo, Texas 77437.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Agnes Samora

Agnes “Nacha” Samora, age 92, of Boling, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born on April 14, 1914, in Port Isabel, the daughter of the late Gumecindo Gutierrez and Maria Angelita Ochoa Gutierrez.

Mrs. Samora had been a resident of Boling for the past 14 years and was a former resident of Newgulf. She married Porfirio Samora on March 7, 1933, in Palacios and he preceded her in death on March 22, 1990. Mrs. Samora was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary De Fries; a great-grandson, Daniel Richard Samora; two sisters and three brothers. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton. Mrs. Samora worked in the housekeeping department of Gulf Coast Medical Center until her retirement in 1973. She enjoyed gardening and sewing.

A Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. today, Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Interment followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
Survivors include her daughters; Olivia Vela and Gloria Guajardo, both of Wharton, Rebecca Krushall and Lu Ella Krobot, both of Boling, Dora Jaure of Lake Jackson, Linda Dearmond of Bay City and Kimberly Munoz of Gloster, La.; sons, Daniel Samora of Iago and Pete Samora of Palacios; 33 grandchildren, 79 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Randy Samora, Dan Lee Samora, Christian Samora, Eric Guajardo, Rick Guajardo, Joshua Krobot, Andrew Vela, Anthony Jaure and Ronald Krushall.

Honorary Pallbearers were Gail Murphy, Bonnie Navarro, Sonya Goodhart, Lisa Waddy, Vanessa Gonzales, Monica Ramirez, Kimberly Munoz, Rebekah Samora and Jacquelyn Krobot.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Ave., Wharton, TX 77488.
Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Evie Shanks

Evie Jean Head Shanks, age 63, of Wharton, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at her residence following a sudden illness. She was born on May 6, 1943, in Bay City, daughter of the late Euell Albert Head and Cora Reddoch Head.

Mrs. Shanks was reared in Bay City and was a 1961 graduate of Bay City High School. She later attended Wharton County Junior College. Mrs. Shanks married Robert Ray Shanks on Jan. 14, 1967, in Bay City. He preceded her in death on June 9, 1983. Mrs. Shanks was a 39-year resident of Wharton County, having lived in Burr and most recently Wharton. She and her late husband, Robert, were owners of Shanks Flying Service from 1970 until 1983. Mrs. Shanks was an administrative assistant for Wharton County Precinct No. 1 for the past 12 years. She enjoyed her monthly lunch meetings with other Wharton county administrative assistants. Her favorite hobbies included bingo, painting, camping, floundering, crocheting and raising animals. Mrs. Shanks enjoyed the outdoors and loved traveling to the State of Colorado. Her favorite time of the year was Christmas. She treasured spending time with her children, grandchildren, and family.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, at Iago Federated Church with Mickey Reynolds officiating. Cremation will follow. Friends may call for visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Survivors include her daughters, Staci Coats of Wharton and Kristi Hester of Round Rock; sister, Wanda White of Wharton; grandchildren, Sara Renee Coats, Brittany Nichole Hester and Ashlyn Jones Hester. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Vera Corine Franks.

Pallbearers are Steve Wasicek, Ray Rolf, Herman Johnson, Weldon Helfer, Jerry Laitkep, Leo Castillo, Pedro Salazar, Robert Stolle, Marvin Shelton, Jason Miller, Clint Dickerson, Kelly Grundy, Jerry Kucera, Lester Aldridge, Cruz Gebera, Bubba Broesche, Preston Shannon, Tyler Barker, and Jason Johnson.
If desiring, memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, in memory of her sister Vera Corine Franks, c/o Susan Franks Barnard, 2010 Desert Springs Court, League City, TX 77573.

Ruth Viereck

Funeral services for Ruth Mae Viereck, 64, of Bellville, will be held Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at 9 a.m. at Knesek Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Bellville with Rev. Jennie Jones officiating. Interment will be at Oak Knoll Cemetery in Bellville.
Pallbearers serving are Chris Janik, Jason Janik, David Janik, DuWayne Pfeffer, Glen Huebner and Greg Janik.

Honorary pallbearers are Braden Chovanec, Allen Gerloff, Dr. Gene Huebner and Dr. Welton Hill.
Mrs. Viereck was born in East Bernard, the daughter of Rudolph and Martha Chuhchal Janik. She was reared in Wharton and graduated from Wharton High School in 1960. On July 23, 1960, the former Miss Ruth Janik was joined in marriage to Mr. Charles Viereck with a ceremony held at St. John Lutheran Church in Bellville. She was a lifelong homemaker. Mrs. Viereck loved to fish and she also had a beautician license and worked at it for a hobby. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Ruth Viereck died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006, in Houston.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Viereck of Bellville; daughter, Donna Chovanec and husband David of Bellville; son, Michael Viereck of Bellville; brothers, Gene Janik and wife Elaine of Wharton, Irvin Janik of Wharton, Vernon Janik of El Campo and Larry Janik and wife Donna of El Campo; grandchildren, Jennifer Gerloff and husband Allen, Braden Chovanec and Erica Viereck; great-granddaughter, Kymberlyn Gerloff; brother-in-law, Douglas Viereck and wife Terri of Magnolia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Rudolph and Martha Janik; grandson, Austin Chovanec; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Melvin and Lenora Viereck.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bellville General Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 997, Bellville, TX 77418.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Knesek Family Funeral Chapels in Bellville.

Bonnie Krenek

Memorial services for Bonnie Lavonne Krenek, 51, of Bay City, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at College Heights Baptist Church with Rev. Don Hurley officiating.

Mrs. Krenek died March 12, 2007, in Wharton after a sudden illness. She was born June 1, 1955, in Wharton to Burlon L. and Polly Whiddon Parsons.

She was reared in Wharton. Mrs. Krenek married Christopher Albert Krenek on Aug. 17, 1977, and were later divorced. She worked as a store manager for many years in Bay City and had been a resident there for the past 20 years.
Survivors include daughter, Polly Kay Owen of Bay City; son, Christopher Edward Krenek of Bay City; mother, Polly Dalton of Wharton; grandchild, Dylan Dean Owen of Bay City; sisters and brothers-in-law, Susan Paulette Whaley of Bay City, Melanie Yvonne and Christopher Krenek of Hungerford and Angel Jean and Paul Dirba of Midland; brothers and sisters-in-law, Burlon L. and Betsy Parsons of Wharton and Patrick L. and Terri Parsons of Weimar; longtime friend, Charlie “Red” Burnette III of Bay City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father; and brother, Edward L. Parsons.

Margorie Lee

Funeral services for Margorie Lee, 92, of Robstown and formerly of Kendleton, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Newman Chapel Methodist Church in Kendleton with Rev. James Crabb officiating.

Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery in Kendleton. Viewing will begin two hours before the services on Friday.

Mrs. Lee died March 11, 2007, at River Ridge Nursing Center in Corpus Christi. She was born Oct. 11, 1914, in Wharton to Elijah and Louisa Taylor Campbell.
She was a Methodist by faith and a homemaker.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Herman and Dalma Lee of Robstown; grandchildren, Kevin Lee and Tyeishe Brown of Kendleton and Jan Stevens of Corpus Christi; brother, Elijah Campbell Jr. of Houston; and one great-grandchild.
