Claudine Stalks

Funeral services for Claudine Stalks, 69, of Hungerford, will be held 1 p.m. today, Saturday, at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. A.J. Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Prosperity Cemetery.

Mrs. Stalks died at her residence Nov. 20, 2002. She was born Nov. 2, 1933, in Wharton to Albert and Cherry Brown Knox.

Survivors include son, Steve Ware Jr. of Wharton; daughter, Ruby Ware of San Francisco, Calif.; sisters, Rosie Allen of Wharton, Ruby Parker of Texas City, Jeraldine Johnson and Alice Greer, both of Houston; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Raquel Villarreal

Raquel Gomez Villarreal, 80, of Boling, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002 in a Houston hospital following an extended illness. She was born on Jan. 17, 1922 in Agualeguas, Mexico, the daughter of the late Jose and Amada Vasquez Gomez.

Mrs. Villarreal married Alonzo F. Villarreal on April 8, 1939, in Newgulf. He preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1998. She was a longtime resident of Newgulf and Boling and worked as a cafeteria worker at Boling High School prior to retiring in 1993. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boling and enjoyed playing bingo and tending to her flowers.

A funeral mass was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Raymond Jackson officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home.

Survivors include, daughter and son-in-law, Josefina Raquel and Troy Ocanas of Robstown and Celina Michel of Boling; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Beverly Villarreal of Stafford and Alonzo E. and Bertha Villarreal of Hacienda Heights, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Margaret Villarreal of Boling; brother, Frank Gomez of Victoria; 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Humberto Villarreal and two brothers.

Pallbearers were Bob Ocanas, Rick Villarreal, Mark Villarreal, Bert Villarreal, Lewis Villarreal, Edmund Ocanas, Bobby Villarreal, Omar Michel, Troy Ocanas Jr. and Michael Villarreal.

If desiring, memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Lalla Rock, Boling; Texas 77420.

F. Wayne White

F. Wayne White passed away on Nov. 20, 2002, his birthday, in Austin.

Mr. White and his twin sister, Jayne, were born Nov. 20, 1928, in Dallas. During his childhood years he lived in Plains, Cleburne, Muleshoe, Silverton, and Bryan, while his father was serving as a county agent. By 1939 the family had settled in Dallas where Mr. White completed his high school education, graduating from North Dallas High School.

After graduation, Mr. White joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Francisco, Calif., and Norfolk, Va. In August, 1949, after three years of service, he was honorably discharged from the Navy.

He immediately entered the University of Texas at Austin and received a bachelor of business degree there in 1953. While attending the University of Texas he met Sue Worthing and the couple married on June 2, 1951. They resided their first year in Austin while Mr. White was attending school.
In 1952, he and Sue moved to Beaumont where he was employed by the treasury department of Bethlehem Steel. After being with Bethlehem Steel for two years, Mr. White joined the accounting department of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company in Newgulf. He and his family lived in Wharton for 12 years.

While living in Wharton, Mr. White was active in the First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and was elected deacon. He was elected to the Wharton City Council and served as Mayor Pro-tem, as well as taking part in other community organizations.

In 1966 Mr. White was transferred to the corporate office of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company in New York City where he spent his last 21 years of employment. At time of retirement he was senior vice-president of employee relations and administration for Elf Aquitaine Inc., a French oil and chemical company which had bought Texasgulf in 1981.

He and his family resided in Fairfield, Conn., for 19 years. While in Fairfield, Mr. White was an active member of Greenfield Hill Congregational Church where he served as chairman of the Religious Education Board and chairman of the Minister Search Committee.

Mr. White retired in December of 1988, and returned to his beloved Texas, where he and his wife, Sue, made their home in Austin. Displaying his offbeat sense of humor, Mr. White playfully founded the Austin Snow Removal Business which he operated out of sunny Austin for many years. During his tenure in Austin, he served two terms on the Travis County Children’s Welfare Board, volunteered with the Seton Auxiliary, devoted many hours to The Settlement Club, and was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Mr. White was a charming and compassionate man, with a warm handshake and a winning smile. He spent his life giving service to others.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Finley and Jessie White, and brothers, Albert White of Dallas and Arlis White of Silverton.

Mr. White is survived by his wife, Sue, of Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Sally and David Beck; and their children, Meagan Worthing, Amanda Edwards and Tyler Stovall Beck, all of Houston; daughter, Cynthia White, and husband, Richard Hernandez, and their daughter, Brigeda Sue Hernandez, all of Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Cara Louise White and Christopher Crockett Lowrimore and their daughter, Anna Christian Lowrimore, all of Austin. He is also survived by his sister, Jayne Winkler and husband, Max Winkler, of Georgetown.

A graveside service will be held at the Historic Wharton Cemetery in Wharton. A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Austin today, Saturday, at 1 p.m. Donations can be sent to Covenant Presbyterian Church in Austin.

Rivers Mackie

Funeral services for Rivers Mackie, 95, of Grand Prairie, will be held today, Saturday, at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, La., with Fred Luker Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivette Cemetery in New Orleans, La.

Mrs. Mackie died Jan. 21, 2003, at Charlton Methodist Hospital in Dallas. He was born Oct. 15, 1907, in Lindsey, La.

He was a longshoreman and member of ILA Local No. 300. Mr. Mackie was Baptist by faith.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Julia and Raymond Woodard of Dallas; sons and daughter-in-law, Johnny B. and Ardelia Hayes and Theodore Hill; and 14 grandchildren.

Lucy Peterman

Funeral services for Lucy Peterman, 79, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Seven Star Baptist Church in Hungerford. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery.

Ms. Peterson died Jan. 23, 2003.

Willie Sanders

Funeral services for Willie Mae Sanders, 58, of Wharton, will be held 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at The Temple of Glory in Kendleton with Rev. A. Banks officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery.

Mrs. Sanders died Jan. 19, 2003, at Memorial Hermann Hospital. She was born Oct. 17, 1944, in Wharton to Willie and Virgie Payne Moore.

Survivors include parents, Willie and Virgie Moore, both of Wharton; husband, Rev. Johnny Lee Sanders Sr. of Wharton; son, Johnny Lee Sanders Jr. of Wharton; daughters, Patricia Ann Sanders, Christine Green and Regina Jerrois, all of Wharton; brothers, James Moore and Patrick Moore, both of Wharton; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.

Reatha Scarlett

Memorial services for Reatha Deloris Scarlett, 74, of Wharton, were held Friday at Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall.

Mrs. Scarlett died at her home Jan. 19, 2003. She was born Sept. 14, 1928, in Wharton to Guy and Millie Myers Ford.

Survivors include sons, Ronald Hicks of Houston and Charlie Hicks of Rosharon; daughters, Rita Hicks of Houston, Wilma Edwards of Fort Worth, Linda Hicks of Houston, Laverne Baker and Pamela Roberts of Seat Pleasant, Md.; sister, Mittie Bailey of Wharton; nine grandchildren with a host of other relatives and friends.

Sybil Shanks

Funeral services for Sybil Inez Shanks, 66, of Wharton were held Friday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Debbie Cenko officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Shanks died Jan. 21, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born May 10, 1936, in Wharton, the daughter of the late Floyd Barker and Ollie Waters Barker.

She had been a life-long resident of Wharton and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wharton. Mrs. Shanks worked as a dispatcher for the Wharton Volunteer Fire Department and the City of Wharton for 16 and one-half years until her retirement in 1997. Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Sue Shanks in 1979, and a brother, Edgar “Pistol” Barker in 1970.

Survivors include her son, James Keith Shanks of Mississippi; sister, Kathy Sikes of Richmond; brother, Joe Barker of Wharton; and one granddaughter.

Honorary Pallbearers were all current and former members of the Wharton Volunteer Fire Department and the Wharton Police Department.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1292, Wharton, Texas; or Wharton Volunteer Fire Department, 319 N. Fulton, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Lillie Shaw

Funeral services for Lillie Lee Shaw, 82, of West Columbia, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia with her nephew William Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Lawn Haven of Rest Cemetery in West Columbia.

Mrs. Shaw died Jan. 23, 2003, in Bay City. She was born April 6, 1920, in Gore, Okla.

She was a lifelong area resident and member of the West Columbia Church of Christ.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Donald Joe and Dianne Shaw of Goliad and Earl L. “Boogie” and Norma Shaw of West Columbia; daughters and sons-in-law, Debra Ann and Clinton Long of Wharton and Judy Gail and Greg Goodwin of Justin; brother and sister-in-law, James and Ruth Edwards of Huntsville; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Jessie Hicks
Funeral services for Jessie Lee Hicks, 80, of Hungerford will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. C. Fields officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Center Union Baptist Church. Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hick died May 16, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Sept. 11, 1922, in Wharton to Ike and Easter Burton Moore.

Survivors include sons, George Hicks of Houston, Jesse Hicks of Missouri City, Elijah Hicks of Richmond, Marvin Hicks of Wharton and Melvin Hicks of Richmond; daughters, Ruby Hunter of Hitchcock, Mary Wheatley of Houston, Barbara Bolden of Missouri City, Rebecca Hardy of Houston, Carol Dickerson of Houston, Alma Davis of Missouri City, Joyce Jackson of Houston, Deborah McCary of Missouri City and Shelia Owens of Houston; sister, Selena Mack of Houston; 32 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Juanita Bowers
Memorial service for Juanita Bowers, 67, of Wharton was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Matthews Funeral Home with Rev. M.E. Matthews officiating.

Mrs. Bowers died May 15, 2003, at Triumph Hospital in Sugar Land following a lengthy illness. She was born July 1, 1935 in Marietta, Ohio, to Howard and Gladys McKnight. She had been a resident of Wharton for 24 years. On Nov. 4. 1953, she married Russell Bowers who preceded her in death.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Roy Cunningham of Ohio; son and daughter-in-law, William and Delores Bowers; sisters Kate, Joann McKnight, Doris duffy, Wilima McKnight; a brother, Ralph McKnight; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

George R. Garza
Funeral services for George R. Garza, 61, of Boling, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Wharton Funeral Home chapel with David Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial park Cemetery in Wharton.

Mr. Garza died May 15, 2003, Needville. He was born April 15, 1942, in Boling, the son of Alberto and Julia Rodriguez Garza, now deceased.

Mr. Garza was employed in the traffic department of Texasgulf Sulpher Co. until his retirement in 1992. He married Eva Rangel on August 13, 1977 in Boling. He was a member of Grace Community Fellowship Church in Needville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Aaron Garza Sr.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Garza; daughters Amy Rangel of Wharton and Amanda Garza of Boling; sons Adam Garza and Andrew Garza of Boling, Rick Garza of Wharton; sisters Sophia Rivera of Wallis and Corina Garza of El Campo; brothers, Albert Garza and Larry Garza of Boling, Jesse Garza of Clute, Ray Garza and Santos Garza of West Columbia; and three grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorial be made to Grace Community Fellowship, Needville, 2705 Richmond Road, Needville, Texas, 77461.

Eula Ganske

Eula Grace Howell Ganske, age 73, of Sugar Land and a longtime resident of Wharton County, died Thursday morning, Nov. 20, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born on March 15, 1930, in Sherman, the daughter of the late John and Grace Smith Howell.
She married Walter Sam “Bo” Ganske on April 24, 1949, in Bay City. He preceded her in death on May 13, 1992. Prior to retiring, she worked as a secretary for Texasgulf Sulfur. Mrs. Ganske was a former member of Newgulf Baptist Church and was a member of First Baptist Church of Wharton. She was a volunteer for SHARE.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at First Baptist Church in Wharton. Interment followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Rosenberg.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, John and Terri Ganske of Boling; daughter and son-in-law, Chris and Pete Brooks of Sugar Land; sister, Beaulah Warren of Midwest City, Okla.; brother, Jack Howell of Dallas; grandchildren and spouses, Shane and Vikki Ganske of League City, Ty and Ronda Ganske of Austin, Samantha Brooks of Sugar Land, Mickey Brooks of Sugar Land and Nihla Rae Perry of Eagle Lake. Three brothers preceded her in death.
Pallbearers were Lyle Burns, Melvin Baca, Edgar Roades, Bubba Altenburg, Pete Brooks and Mike Saizon. Honorary pallbearers were Norman Brown, Clinton White and Melvin Ganske.
