Gussie Baumgart

Gussie Mae Tasler Baumgart, 79, of Bay City, passed away Saturday, March 31, 2007. She was born Sept. 19, 1927, in Shiner, to Frank N. Tasler Jr. and Agusta Victoria Nehiba Tasler. She was a resident of Bay City since 1952 and was a retired registered nurse.

She is survived by her husband, Norman C. Baumgart of Bay City; by her daughters, Candace Baumgart Ibbotson and husband Roger Manteufel of Corpus Christi and Christina Marie Baumgart Meyers and husband Ronnie Meyers of Nacogdoches; by her son, Charles Bryan Baumgart of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and by her grandchildren, Timothy Scott Ibbotson, Patrick William Ibbotson, Jacob Daniel Meyers and Rebecca Marie Meyers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank N. and Agusta Victoria Tasler; and by her sisters, Ethelyn Schreiber and Frances Ann Tasler.
A prayer service was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Chester Sassman officiating. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Meyers, Roger Manteufel, Timothy Scott Ibbotson, Jacob David Meyers, David Davis and Bill Johnson.

Polly Dalton

Funeral services for Polly Dalton, 77, of Wharton, willl be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at College Heights Baptist Church.

Mrs. Dalton died April 2, 2007.

Mary Gage

Funeral services for Mary Sue Gage, 76, of Gladewater, were held Tuesday at Croley Funeral Home Chapel with Charles Fisher and Erik Gage officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Park in Gilmer.

Mrs. Gage was born Oct. 10, 1930, in Pampa, she died March 31, 2007.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Sherry Kielman of Gladewater and Sherryl and Darrell LaPona of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Perry and Patricia Gage of St. Jo, Ark., and Jerryl and Linda Gage of Crockett; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Monday at Croley Funeral Home.

Patricia Gilley

Memorial services for Patricia Gilley, 50, of El Campo, were held Friday at First Christian Church in El Campo with Rev. Don Storey officiating.

Mrs. Gilley died on March 31, 2007. She was born on Oct. 7, 1956, to the late Richard Moshier and Faith Ann Marts Moshier of Kentucky.

She was the manager at McDonald’s for 12 years.

Survivors include her mother; husband, Bob Gilley of El Campo; daughters, B.J. Gilley of El Campo and Amanda Miller and husband Lee of Wharton; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Patricia Gilley Memorial Fund with accounts set up at Prosperity Bank or New First National Bank.

Daryl McKee

Funeral services for Daryl Otto McKee, 57, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Saturday, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with Rev. Lance Ousley officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Mr. McKee died April 25, 2007, following an extended illness. He was born on Aug. 14, 1949, in Wharton to Otto McKee and Lillian Cerny McKee.

He grew up in Wharton and graduated from Wharton High School in 1967. Mr. McKee married Pamela Rogers on Oct. 29, 1970, in Lake Jackson. He received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Texas in 1971. He went on to obtain his master’s of business administration from Louisiana Tech in 1980 and his Ph. D. from Texas A&M in 1987. Mr. McKee had a long career in news and education. He worked as an energy editor for the Amarillo Globe News from 1972-1976. In 1977, he served as bureau chief with the Miami Herald and economic editor at the Shreveport Journal. In 1979, Mr. McKee served as the chamber of commerce manager of the business research department in Shreveport. In 1982, he became an adjunct professor for marketing and director of the Center for Business Research at LSU in Shreveport, La. From 1987 until his death, Mr. McKee was working as a marketing professor at LSU-Baton Rouge under the areas of marketing, management, and services marketing. He participated in research in organizational strategy, information technology, employee culture, and marketing ethics.

Mr. McKee was preceded in death by his father, Otto McKee; his brother Danny Charles McKee; and his grandparents, Joe and May McKee and Anton and Frances Cerny.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela McKee of Baton Rouge; daughter, Allison Erica McKee of Baton Rouge; mother, Lillian McKee of Wharton; and son-in-law, Raymond Husser of Baton Rouge.

Carmen Peralez

Carmen Peralez, age 76, of Hungerford, died Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton. She was born on March 18, 1931, in Wharton, the daughter of the late Estaben Peralez and Cirelda Rodriguez Peralez.

Ms. Peraliz was a longtime resident of Hungerford. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. In addition to her parents, Carmen was preceded in death by her brothers; Domingo, Victor, Juan, Felix, Gabriel and Felix Peralez.
Visitation was held on Thursday, April 26, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with a rosary held at 7p.m. Funeral services were held Friday, April 27, at 2 p.m. from Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Ganado with Rev. Michael Lyons officiating. Interment was in the Assumption Cemetery in Ganado.

Pallbearers are John Chris Gutierrez, Joshua Ramirez, Steve Salazar, Michael Ricarte, Phil Salazar, Daniel Gonzales, Anthony Gonzales Sr. and Ryan Salazar.
Honorary pallbearers are Cecily Hernandez, Brandy Gutierrez, Ashley Alvarado, Cassie Munoz, Melissa Gonzales, Amber Gonzales, Kristie Martinez, Arlene Martinez, Deanna Martinez, Salina Martinez, Irma Martinez, Madison Gutierrez, Raeanna Hawkins, Ravonna Hawkins, Gabby Gonzales, Gaylesia Penrice and Aislinn McKinney.

Survivors include her sisters: Angelina Gonzales of Hungerford, Elvida Salazar of Wharton, Andrea Salazar of Wharton, Mary Aguilar of Austin and Mary Dolores Rodriguez of South Houston; sister-in-law, Georgia Peralez of Victoria; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Dorothy Posey

Dorothy Louise Posey, 70, was suddenly called home on April 22, 2007.
Mrs. Posey was born and reared in Houston, and spent the last six years of her life in Wharton surrounded by her many close friends. A person of multiple talents, she enriched the lives of everyone she touched with her beautiful smile and personality, and will be deeply missed by those who knew her.
She is survived by her son Steve and wife Jean; grandchildren, Stephen Posey II, Kristi Keilers and husband Brandon; great-granddaughter, Kaitlynn Rene' Keilers; two brothers, Ira Allen and wife Kaye, Don Allen and wife Rosemary; and sister-in-law, Betty Allen.

A celebration of her life will be held on May 6, at 1 p.m. in the clubhouse of Red River Place Apartments, 1821 Red River Avenue in Wharton, with reception to follow.

Her son would like to thank all of her friends in Wharton, more especially Darwin Johnston, for all of their support and making the last years of her life the most memorable to her.

Juan Reyes

Juan M. Reyes Jr., age 37, of Morris, Ill., died Monday, April 23, 2007, at Morris Hospital in Morris, Ill. He was born on Feb. 20, 1970, in Wharton, the son of Juan Reyes Sr. and Florence Trevino Reyes.

He was a longtime resident of Wharton before moving to Morris eight years ago. Mr. Reyes worked as a construction laborer in the Morris area for many years. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton. Besides being with his friends and family, he enjoyed football and being out of doors. Mr. Reyes also enjoyed horseback riding, singing and dancing, cooking for family and friends and playing dominoes. Some of his favorite memories included playing with his three children.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his daughters, Heather Nicole Reyes and Alyssa Renee Reyes, both of San Antonio; son, Juan M. Reyes III of San Antonio; sister, Michelle Kucera and husband, Keith, of Blessing; grandfather, Felix Reyes Sr.; brother, James Reyes and wife, Melissa, of Richmond. Numerous aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

Mr. Reyes was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bernardo Trevino Sr., Petrita Trevino and Pauline Reyes.
Funeral Mass was held on Thursday, April 26, 2007, at 11 a.m. from St. John Catholic Church in Hungerford. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Pallbearers were Matthew Trevino, Cody Tenario, Ricky Chavez, Marcus Reyes, Santos Estraca Jr., Pedro Trevino and Juan M. Reyes III.

Honorary pallbearers were Juan Reyes Sr., James Reyes, Keith Kucera and Felix Reyes Sr.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

William Foyt
William Arnold “Bill” Foyt Sr., age 85, of Wharton, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, in Richmond following a sudden illness. He was born on June 26, 1916, in Ellinger the son of the late John Foyt and Tracy Horak Foyt.
Mr. Foyt was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He married Theresa Marie Brosman in 1942 in Rosenberg and she preceded him in death on May 27, 2002. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Foyt worked as an oil field driller for various companies including, Parker Drilling, Richards Drilling, Butler Drilling and TNL Drilling until his retirement in 1981. Following his retirement, Mr. Foyt was a self-employed rancher who enjoyed raising cattle.
Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2002, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Father Joe Vrana officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, June 27, 2002 at Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. Friends may call for visitation after 5 p.m. Thursday.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley Ann and Joe Kopecky of Buchanan Dam and Betty Jane and Herschel Ustynik of Rosenberg; son and daughter-in-law, William Arnold and Debra Foyt Jr. of Cedar Lane; brother, Arnold J. Foyt of Tekamah, Neb.; grandchildren, Dwain Ustynik, Shalyn Rosenbaum and husband Ross, Cayse Shirley and husband Robert, Travis Foyt, Warren Kopecky and Bryan Kopecky. He was preceded in death by sisters, Vlasta Barcak, Lilly Heinke, Julie Harper, Theresa Machann and Adele Novelle and by brothers, Joe, John J., Elo and Walter Foyt.
Pallbearers are Travis Foyt, Warren Kopecky, Bryan Kopecky, Robert Shirley, Dwain Ustynik and Elo Foyt Jr.
Honorary pallbearers were his many friends and neighbors.

Paul Hardy
Funeral services for Paul Ted Hardy, 87, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church. Rosary will be recited at the church beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow the funeral mass at Wharton City Cemetery.
Mr. Hardy died June 24, 2002, in Wharton after an extended illness.

Imogene Shelley
Imogene Shelley died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Brazosport Memorial Hospital. She was born Sept. 7, 1917, in Iredell. She spent the last two years of her life with friends and community family at Carriage Inn in Lake Jackson. Previous to moving to Lake Jackson, to be near her daughter, her home was in Wharton where she was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the El Campo Order of the Eastern Star. Wharton was the home of her latter adult life, but Hale Center was the home of her young adult life and the farm where she and her husband, Jack, raised their four children. Hale Center is also where she began the relationship with her beloved Order of the Eastern Star and the work of the Masons.
Mrs. Shelley is survived by her four children, Howard Shelley and wife, Jean, Van Horn; Beth Dickson and husband Gil, of Lake Jackson; Kenneth Shelley and wife, Gayle of Wharton and Peggy Moffett and husband, Danny, of Weatherford. She was loved and cherished by her 12 grandchildren, Cheri Isett, Lana DuBois, Jackie Judd, John Ward, Rick Shelley, Shelley Hawkins, Jeff Reid, David Shelley, Michael Shelley, Kathryn Loos, Reggie Moffett and Robert Moffett. And very special to her were her 19 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Vernon McDougal and Bennie McDougal of Lubbock, and a very special sister-in-law, Pauline Sell of Petersburg also survive her. Imogene was first and foremost a loving wife and devoted mother. Her nurturing instincts were genuine and generous, and she leaves behind a host of friends spread over a large portion of Texas. Mrs. Shelley was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Ernest Riley “Jack” Shelley, two half-sisters and two brothers.
Visitation was held at Lakewood Funeral Home in Lake Jackson from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday and the family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 p.m. until just before the services at the First Presbyterian Church in Wharton at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Wharton.
Donations in lieu of flowers should be given to the El Campo Eastern Star, in care of Grace Hildebrand, Secretary, 422 Frankie Avenue, Wharton, Texas 77488; or to charity of personal choice.

Janie Mangum
Funeral services for Janie Hudgins Mangum, 88, of Hungerford, will be held today, Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at 2 p.m. from Wharton Funeral Home with Mr. Gene Polvado and Mr. Paul Jones officiating. Interment will be in Wharton City Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers are her grandsons, Jay Gubert, Greg Goudeau, Lane Mangum, Robert Goudeau, Michael Goudeau, Matt Gubert and Scott Yackel.

On Jan. 15, 1914, Walter and Ella Hinkle Hudgins became the parents of their third child, Janie who was born in Hungerford. She was reared in Hungerford and while she was growing up she helped out on the family ranch with the cattle and horses. Janie graduated from Wharton High School in 1931. While in high school she excelled in tennis and developed many lasting friendships with her glowing personality. After high school, Janie attended TCU in Fort Worth and also attended the University of Houston. On Feb. 15, 1936, the former Miss Janie Hudgins was joined in marriage to Mr. Ted Mangum at the house of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hudgins in Hungerford. Janie was very active having her hand in all different endeavors. She was an active member of the Wharton Band Parents, the Memorial Chairman of the Wharton County Chapter of the American Cancer Society for more than 30 years, and would volunteer her time to take people to M.D. Anderson for their treatments. She was a member of Abell Street Church of Christ and a devoted Christian that showed through her life. Her main enjoyment was watching her children, grandchildren and even great- grandchildren grow. There was never a want that her “kids” were doing that she was not attending from sporting events to graduations to weddings. Mrs. Mangum had a special gift from God when it came for caring for others. She was always giving to others whether it was her time or food or a little something to get them by. Many were adopted into her family. She loved people and being around others to share her happiness. She will be missed by all who she touched with her special kindness and love. Janie Mangum passed away at her home in Hungerford on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Adrian Gubert of Alvin, Sarah and Harry Goudeau of Hungerford and Hollis and Earl Yackel of Wharton; son, Walter Joe Mangum of Wharton; sister, Eleanor Locke of Hungerford; grandchildren, Jay, Susanne and Matt Gubert, Greg, Robert and Michael Goudeau, Kelly Bockel, Scott Yackel, Lane Mangum and Beth Grady; great-grandchildren, Nick, Jennifer, Devin, Aaron, Garrett, Emily, Taylor, Dawson, Kelton, Jack Logan, Hunter, Austin, Max, Cheyenne, Savannah, Lauren and Bailey. She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter J. and Ella Hudgins; husband, Ted Mangum; brother, Edgar Hudgins; and sisters, Nettie and Evelyn Hudgins.

Memorial contributions may be made to Abell Street Church of Christ, 501 Abell Street, Wharton, Texas 77488; East Wharton County Cancer Society, 6606 Reid Road, Wharton, Texas 77488; or Hospice Support Care, 1102 North Mechanic, El Campo, Texas 77437.

Lovie Matthys

Funeral services for Lovie Noles Matthys, 85, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Wharton. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.

Mrs. Matthys died Oct. 26, 2002, at her residence following a sudden illness.
