Allan Butler

Funeral services for Allan Leon Butler, 19, of Hiawatha, Iowa, will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. James Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Johnson Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday 6-9 p.m. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Sunday.

Allan died June 17, 2003, in a drowning accident in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was born Dec. 1, 1983, in Tyler, to Rev. Alvin L. and Linda Frier Butler Sr.

Survivors include parents, Rev. Alvin L. Butler Sr. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Linda Washington of Wharton; grandmother, Annie Mae Frier of Wharton; brother, Alvin L. Butler Jr. of Houston; sisters, Rosalind Watkins of Wharton, Rhonda Watkins of Wharton, Charlotte Johnson of Fort Worth and Monique Niblett of Dallas.

Leonard Cerny

Funeral services for Leonard Wilbert Cerny, 72, of El Campo, were held Friday at St. Philip Catholic Church in El Campo with Rev. Ty Bazai officiating. Burial followed in St. John’s Cemetery in Taiton with full military honors by American Legion Post No. 251. Wake services were held Thursday at Triska Funeral Home.

Mr. Cerny died June 18, 2003. He was born Aug. 20, 1930, in Crescent to the late Emil and Annie Pavlicek Cerny.

He married Irene Dirba and was a farmer. Mr. Cerny was a member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in El Campo. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 251, VFW and DAV. He was also a member of the SPJST, Farmers Co-Op, Farm Bureau and a lifetime member of the Wharton County Youth Fair Boy Builders.

Survivors include wife, Irene Cerny of El Campo; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Carlton Cox of Rowlett; sons and daughters-in-law, Steven Cerny of Wharton, Tom and Margy Cerny and Ricky and Gay Lynn Cerny, all of El Campo; sisters, Helen Peters of El Campo, Leona Coxwell of Sheridan and Marcella Gajewsky of El Campo; brothers, Jim Cerny of El Campo, Victor Cerny of Wharton and Sylvester Cerny of El Campo; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Raymond Cerny.

If desiring, memorials may be made to St. Philip Church Building Fund or a charity of personal choice.

Bernard Dusek

Bernard “Ben” Dusek, age 63, of East Bernard, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at his residence. He was born on Nov. 27, 1939, in East Bernard, the son of the late Frank Dusek and Tillie Prazak Dusek.
Mr. Dusek was reared in East Bernard and was a graduate of East Bernard High School. He attended Wharton County Junior College and Sam Houston State Teachers College and later the University of Houston. Mr. Dusek married Frances Melva Cook on Nov. 7, 1964, in Houston. He was a former resident of Houston, where he was employed as a lineman for Houston Lighting and Power Company for 33 years until his retirement in 1995. He has been a resident of East Bernard since 1983. Mr. Dusek was a member of First United Methodist Church of East Bernard, the East Bernard American Legion and the K.J.T. He enjoyed attending the Wednesday morning Men’s Community Breakfast.

Funeral services were held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at First United Methodist Church in East Bernard with the Rev. Michael Holcomb officiating. Interment followed in the Methodist Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Dusek of East Bernard; daughter, Kelly Dusek of The Woodlands; son, Melvin Dusek of East Bernard; brothers, Syl Dusek and wife, Joyce, of East Bernard and Ray Dusek and wife, Frances, of East Bernard; brother-in-law, Harvey Neubauer of Altair. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Tillie Neubauer.

Pallbearers were Clair McCalla, Robert Hlavinka, Marion Hunt, Randall Dusek, Colin Brock and Elroy Schatz.

Honorary pallbearers were Elroy Hupe, “Big” Ed Marik, Al Zbranek, Syl Kramr, Fred Minks, Charlie Minks and Richard Vacek.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the First United Methodist Church, 421 Pietsch St., East Bernard, Texas 77435; or a church of personal choice.

Arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Daniel Malota

Daniel Louis Malota, age 46, of Hillje, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at his residence. He was born on July 21, 1956, in El Campo, the son of the late Daniel Joseph Malota and Josephine Palinek Malota.

Mr. Malota was a 1976 graduate of Louise High School and he later attended Brazosport Community College. He married Denice Kucera on July 7, 1990, in Hungerford. Mr. Malota was employed as a jailer and deputy with the Wharton County Sheriff’s Office from 1979 to 1986 and in the maintenance department of the Wharton County Courthouse from 1987 until 1992. For the past 13 years, he worked as a heavy equipment operator for Wharton County Precinct No. 4. Mr. Malota was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford and was a retired member of the Wharton Volunteer Fire Department, having served for 22 years.

Funeral mass services were held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003, at St. John’s Catholic Church with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Cremation followed. Rosary services were held Wednesday evening at St. John’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Denice Kucera Malota of Hillje; brother, Joe Malota and wife, Jen, of Cypress; niece, Molly Malota of Cypress; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ervin and Dorothy Kucera of Wharton; brother-in-law, Bo Kucera of Wharton. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Malota.

Pallbearers were Frankie Peter, Bobby Peter, Darrell Nohavitz, Jimmy Kainer, Kenny Cicherski and Brad Tupa.

Honorary pallbearers were Sid Border, Gordon Newton, E.R. Matus, Mike Orsak and Nacho Rodriguez.

If desiring, memorials may be made to Hospice Support Care, 1102 N. Mechanic, El Campo, Texas 77437; or to St. John’s Catholic Church, P.O. Box 121, Hungerford, Texas 77448.

Arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Lee Munoz

Mr. Lee Anthony Munoz, age 25, of Wharton died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at his residence. He was born on Aug. 29, 1977, in Wharton the son of Anselmo Munoz Jr. and Elvira Longoria Munoz.

Mr. Munoz graduated from Wharton High School in 1995. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1995 and served for four years. He was employed as an operator at J&M Plastics in Wharton.

A Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. A Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his parents, Sam and Vera Munoz Jr. of Wharton; sisters, Terri Elmore of Austin and Nancy Munoz of Wharton; brother, Michael Adam Munoz of Austin; one niece, one nephew and numerous aunts and uncles also survive.

Pallbearers were Gabby Araguz, Richard Lara Jr., Michael A. Munoz, Jason Villareal, Robert Velasquez and Ray Gonzales.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

John Toman

Funeral services for John Edward Toman, 62, of Rosenberg, were held Friday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Rosenberg with Rev. Wencil Pavlovsky officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Rosenberg. A rosary was recited Thursday at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg.

Mr. Toman died June 17, 2003, at his residence. He was born July 28, 1940 in Houston to Steve R. and Norma Smith Toman.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Rosenberg. Mr. Toman retired after 33 years from WKM-Missouri City.

Survivors include wife, Janice Toman; children and their spouses, Cindy and Dennis Heiman, Jackie and Bully Mercer, Nancy and Perry McCain, Becky and Paul Donham, Gerald and Bobbie Toman and John (BJ) Toman Jr.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; mother, Norma Smith Toman; brothers, Charles Toman and James Toman; sisters and their spouses, Carolyn and Clyde Grimit, Elrose and Jimmy Kresta and Marilyn and Fred Iosue; sisters-in-laws, Margie Toman and Bernadette Toman; numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Vision 2011, 1416 George Street, Rosenberg, Texas 77471.

Frances Bedynek

Funeral services for Frances Bedynek, 89 of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bedynek died Aug. 21, 2003 in Wharton.

Aileen Berberich

Aileen Ruth Matula Berberich passed away on Aug. 18. 2003, in Wharton. A memorial service was held on Aug. 21 at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Kersten officiating.

Mrs. Berberich was born to Emil Richard and Mildred Klacman Matula on March 25, 1934, in East Bernard, and moved to Wharton in 1938, where she attended Wharton schools, Wharton County Junior College and Texas Lutheran College in Seguin. She married Louis John Berberich of Burr community. Mrs. Berberich was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and a bookkeeper/accountant for Hawes Company for almost 40 years.

She was an avid reader, a talented writer, a wonderful cook, a creative decorator, a seamstress, a quilter, a green-thumb gardener and an old-movie buff. Mrs. Berberich was a devoted wife, mother and Maw. Her greatest joys were her four grandchildren, Paul and Jessi Zimmerman and Kayci and Kelli Ermis. She loved to spend time talking to them, but more importantly, listening to them. She was a walking “Grandma Brag Book,” and the feeling was mutual. Her grand kids adored her, and their lives an the richer for the wonderful times spent with her.

Mrs. Berberich is survived by her husband Louis, and son Rick, of Burr; daughter Amy and husband Keith Ermis of Burr; daughter Mona and husband David Zimmerman of Jersey Village; and her grandchildren, Paul and Jessi Zimmerman and Kayci and Kelli Ermis. She also leaves two sisters, Nell Marquart of San Antonio and her family, and Jeane Jacobs and family of Ojai, Calif.

Honorary pallbearers were Richard E. Berberich David Zimmerman, Keith J. Ermis, Paul Zimmerman, Patrick Johnston, Paul Hobbs, Keith Archer, Jessica Zimmerman, Kayci Ermis and Kelli Ermis
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to St. Paul Lutheran Church Campers’ Fund, 325 N. East Avenue, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Pearl Boyd

Funeral services for Pearl Baldwin Boyd, 77, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at New Faith Church with Rev. Bennie Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.

Mrs. Boyd died Aug. 20, 2003, at her residence. She was born May 13, 1926, in Wharton to the late Saunders Johnson and Essie Lee Branch.

She was a seven-year resident of Wharton. Mrs. Boyd married Wilbert Boyd. She was a retired caterer and a member of the Heroines of Jericho and was Baptist by faith.

Survivors include husband, Wilbert Boyd; daughters and son-in-law, Carrol Dean and Aaron Phillips, Patricia Anne Baldwin and Jacqueline Bouvier Farris; sons and daughters-in-law, Earnest Lee and Marilyn Baldwin, Jimmie Baldwin III and Rev. Bennie Louis and Denise Baldwin; sister, Ora Mae Tyler; and 18 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.

Stazie Kasmir

Funeral services for Stazie Kasmir, age 88 of Beaumont and a former resident of Schulenburg and Freeport, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. A rosary was recited at 10:15 a.m. Thursday. Burial followed in St. John’s Church Cemetery in Hungerford.

Mrs. Kasmir died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, in a Beaumont Nursing Home following an extended illness. She was born on Oct. 2, 1915, in Lavaca County, the daughter of the late Joseph Ludwig Peters and Frances Lepik Peters.

She was a resident of Schulenburg from 1991 until 2002 when she moved to Beaumont. She married John Kasmir in October of 1934 in Rosenberg and he preceded her in death on Oct. 6, 1990. Mrs. Kasmir was also preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Swain, in 1997. She was a retail manager for several variety stores including Butler & Grimes in Freeport from 1944 until 1963. Mrs. Kasmir was Catholic by Faith. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Schulenburg. Mrs. Kasmir was a member of the Golden Troopers in Freeport and also volunteered at numerous nursing homes in Schulenberg.

Survivors include daughter, Eleanor Coleman of Beaumont; sisters, Elizabeth Wetz of Wharton and Emilie Wagner of Schulenburg; brothers, Frank J. Peters of Schulenburg, August Peters of Guy and Jerry Peters of Crosby; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, 11251 Northwest Freeway, Suite 300, Houston, Texas 77092.

Celestine Phillips

Funeral services for Celestine Phillips, 70, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at New Mount Olive Baptist Church with Rev. Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in New Mount Olive Cemetery in Mackay.

Mrs. Phillips died Aug. 15, 2003, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Houston. She was born Feb. 6, 1933, in Wharton to Lonnie and Sarah Green Phillips Sr.

She was a lifelong resident of Wharton and worked as a housekeeper. Mrs. Phillips was Baptist by faith.

Survivors include daughters, Tonie King, Rae Clark, Heroin J. Dye and Arlene King, all of Wharton, and Earnestine Lewis of Bay City; sisters, Vivian Williams of El Campo, Vera Jones of Bay City, Sarah Butler of Wharton and Mary Phillips of Bay City; brother, Lonnie Phillips Jr. of Wharton; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Nellie Phillips.

James Smith

Funeral services for James Smith, 86, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith died Aug. 21, 2003 in Bay City.

Mary Smith

Funeral services for Mary Jane Smith, 77, of Egypt will he held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Mount Gilead Baptist Church with Rev. R. Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Gilead Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Smith died Aug. 19, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born June 25, 1926, in Wharton to Alonzo and Rosetta Shelton Davis.

Survivors include son, Everett Davis of Egypt; brothers, Harry Davis and Coy Davis, both of Egypt, Robert Davis of Eagle Lake and Charlie Davis of Hitchcock; sisters, Nellie Moses of Wharton and Ida Davis of Atlanta, Ga.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
