Elester Coleman

Funeral services for Elester Coleman Sr., 80, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. L.C. Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow in Gay Hill Cemetery in Columbus.

Mr. Coleman died July 13, 2002, at West Houston Medical Center. He was born Nov. 8, 1921, in Columbus to Steve and Betty Thompson Coleman.

Survivors include wife, Vina Mae Green Coleman of Wharton; son, Larry Coleman of Wharton; daughters, Littie Matthews and Marcella Petitt, both of Wharton, and Linda Cyrill of Missouri City; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mary Dehnel

Funeral services for Mary Vanzura Dehnel, 94, of East Bernard, were held Saturday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Rev. Don Ruppert officiating. Burial followed in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Wake services were held July 19 at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dehnel died July 17, 2002, in Wharton following an extended illness. She was born on Aug. 3, 1907, in Lavaca County, the daughter of the late Cyril and Annie Mitchan Vanzura.

She married Otto “Dutch” Dehnel May 15, 1928, in East Bernard. He preceded her in death in October of 1950. Mrs. Dehnel had been a resident of East Bernard since 1925 working as a seamstress and a homemaker. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and was a former member of KJZT and Christian Mothers.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Jeannette and Bill Kirk of Rockport and Dorothy and Chester Schroeder of Houston; son, Arthur J. “Buddy” Dehnel of East Bernard; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Alicia Rivera

Funeral services for Alicia Rodriguez Rivera, 74, of Wharton, were held Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Wednesday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Rivera died July 23, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born April 7, 1928, in General Bravo NL, Mexico, the daughter of the late Merced Rodriguez and Manuela Cantu Rodriguez.

She was a 42-year resident of Wharton and member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Mrs. Rivera married Trinidad “T.C.” Rivera on April 6, 1947, in General Bravo NL, Mexico.

Survivors include husband, Trinidad “T.C.” Rivera of Wharton; daughter, Mary Alice Quintana of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Trinidad Rivera of Wharton, Norbert and Virginia Rivera of Rosenberg, Oscar Rivera of Corpus Christi and Randy and Kimberly Rivera of Austin; sisters, Manuela Armendariz of Wharton, Altagracia Arizpe of Monterrey, Mexico, and Elida Tijerina of General Bravo, Mexico; brothers, Humberto Rodriguez of Freeport, Ovidio Rodriguez of Wharton and Marcial Rodriguez of Las Vegas, Nev.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by a sister, Concepcion Rodriguez, and a brother, Inocencio Rodriguez.

Theodor Bennetsen

Funeral services for Theodor Andrew “T.A.” Bennetsen, 98, of Wharton, were held Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home with Mickey Reynolds officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Bennetsen died Dec. 3, 2002 at Gulf Coast Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born on Dec. 25, 1903, in Yoakum, the son of the late Evaldt Bennetsen and Anne Bothilde Skodt Bennetsen.

He had been a resident of Wharton County since 1915 and was a farmer all of his life until his retirement. He married Hulda Schunka on Feb. 8, 1928, in El Campo and she preceded him in death on June 6, 2000. He was also preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers. Mr. Bennetsen was an avid hunter and enjoyed working in his yard and garden.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Milton Mazel of Wharton and Mary and John West of Houston; sons and daughters-in-law, Pete and Delores Bennetsen, A.J. and Dorothy Bennetsen and Bill and Clara Bennetsen, all of Wharton; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were his grandsons.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to a charity or church of personal choice.

Catherine Ries
Our loving mother, grandma and friend, Piercy Catherine Ries, age 85, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 4, 2002, in Weatherford.

Mrs. Ries was born on July 28, 1917, in Sabine County in Geneva to John Henry McLanahan and Mary Thomas Williams McLanahan. She married Walter Earnest Ries on April 7, 1951, in Wharton. They lived together with their son, Charles, in Wharton until Mr. Ries passed away on March 24, 1976. Mrs. Ries continued living in Wharton until she moved to Weatherford in the fall of 1991 to live near her son and his family. God, family and friends were first in her life. She was thankful to God for blessing her with two wonderful grandsons, Austin and Morgan Ries, and was grateful for each day the Lord gave her.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Wharton and, after moving to Weatherford, became a member of the First Baptist Church in Weatherford.

Her mother and father; her sister, Gertrude Chamrad; and her brother, John Lovell McLanahan, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her son, Charles Ries and his wife, Jamie, of Weatherford; and her two grandsons, Austin and Morgan Ries. Many loving nephews, nieces and cousins also survive her.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Wharton Funeral Home with Dr. Donnie Melton, of First Baptist Church in Rosenberg, officiating the service. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Clara Vesely
Funeral services are pending at Wharton Funeral Home for Clara Vesely, 92, of Wharton.
Ms. Vesely died Dec. 6, 2002.

Jeanette Mazurkiewicz

Jeanette Bartos Mazurkiewicz, 51, passed away Nov. 26, 2002. She was born in East Bernard on April 24, 1951, the daughter of Julia Bartos and the late Stanley Bartos.

She was a very active member of Holy Family Church and a perennial contributor to the annual fall festivals.

Survivors include her husband of 31 years, Jim of Stafford; daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Steve Guzzetta of Katy, Alison and Art Ortega of Roswell, Ga., and Sandra Mazurkiewicz of Stafford; one grandson; mother, Julia Bartos of East Bernard; sisters and brothers-in-law, Annette and James Hlavinka of Wharton, Bernadette and Jerry Starustka of Richmond; and her brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Linda Bartos of Wharton; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Danna and Ronny Herrmann of Caldwell, Jimmie Reinicke of Cypress, Sherry Mazurkiewicz of Sugar Land; and numerous nieces nephews, and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial followed at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery in Chappell Hill.

Jesus Navarrette

Funeral services for Jesus P. Navarrette Sr., 75, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery. A rosary was held today, Wednesday, at 6 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today.

Mr. Navarrette died Dec. 2, 2002, at Southwest Memorial Hospital. He was born March 30, 1927, in Ojiniga, Mexico, to Manuel and Alefonsa Perez Navarrette.

He married Jesusita Ontiveras and she preceded him in death. Mr. Navarrette had been a resident of Wharton for four years and worked as a laborer. He was Catholic by faith.

Survivors include daughters, Margarita Wilkerson and Nora Navarrette; sons, Jessie Navarrette Jr., Rodolfo Navarrette and Octavio Navarrette; sisters, Maria Guiterez, Pilar Gomez and Cruz Navarrette, all of Ojiniga, Mexico, Maria “Cuca” Davila of Odessa, Angelica Pina of Presidio and Pimaña Peña of Pecos; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Jesus Peña

Jesus “Tano” Peña, age 88, of Boling, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002 at Gulf Coast Medical Center following an extended illness. He was born on Aug. 17, 1914, in Beeville, the son of the late Eusebio Peña and PauIa Armijo Peña.

Mr. Peña had been a resident of Boling for 58 years and was Catholic by faith. He worked as a farm laborer until his retirement in 1980. His hobbies included playing his guitar and watching and listening to baseball. Mr. Peña was preceded in death by three brothers, Matias Peña Sr., Edward Peña and Joe Peña.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Bro. Donald Rodgers officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his sisters, Mary Peña and Hortencia Garcia, both of Houston, and a sister-in-law, Ofilia Peña of Boling. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Pallbearers were Miguel Peña, Matias Peña Jr., Edward Peña, John Garcia, Don Martin and Daron Mendoza.

If desiring, memorials may he sent to a charity of personal choice.
Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Pearl Gilliam

Graveside services for Pearl Elizabeth Hollis Gilliam, age 94, will he held 1:30 p.m. today, Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Madisonville City Cemetery. Mrs. Gilliam died on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002. She had been a resident of Wharton since 1994. Mrs. Gilliam was born in Madisonville on Aug. 5, 1908, to James Tipton and Rosa Steele Hollis.

She graduated from Madisonville High School in 1927, attended Sam Houston State College and graduated from Texas A&I College. She married Richard “Mr. Dick” Gilliam in Edinburg in 1937.

Mrs. Gilliam was preceded in death by her husband, Richard “Mr. Dick” Gilliam; daughter, Rosa Gilliam Koehl; son, Leslie Allen, who died as a child; sister, Loyce Hollis Taylor of Madisonville; and brother, John Allen Hollis of Houston. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Charles Norton of Wharton; grandsons, Grady Koehl of San Antonia, Casey Koehl of Uvalde and granddaughter, Hollis Norton of Houston.

Mrs. Gilliam was a member of the Baptist church and faithfully served our Lord throughout her life. She was an elementary school teacher for 39 years and was active in various educational organizations. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a 75-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron several times.

William Macha

Funeral services for William “Bill” Frank Macha, 86, of Hungerford, were held Tuesday at St. John’s Catholic Church with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Burial followed in St. John’s Cemetery. Rosary services were held Monday at St. John’s Catholic Church.

Mr. Macha died Nov. 22, 2002, in Hungerford. He was born March 14, 1916, to the late Emil and Annie Barta Macha Sr.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a honorary member of the Hungerford Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Macha was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Cecelia Macha; daughter, Anita Simons; son, David Macha; and brothers, Emil Macha Jr. and Victor Macha.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Veronica and Larry Franks of Hungerford and Jeanette Shibest of Houston; sisters, Cecilia Svajda of Corpus Christi, Martha Krenek of Wharton and Vlasta Hanslik of Wharton; brother, Bennie Macha of Houston; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

If desiring, memorials may be made to the Hungerford Volunteer Fire Department.

Debbie Nix

Debbie Nix, 40, of Victoria, passed away Nov. 23, 2002 after a lengthy illness. She was a certified ACLS paramedic, respiratory therapist, crisis counselor and hospital administrator. She devoted her life to helping her fellow man.

She is survived by her parents Woodrow and Jorita Nix; her sisters, Laura Nix and Misty Nix Dempsey; brother-in-law, Nathan Dempsey; and niece Aurora Dempsey, all of Victoria; grandparents, Woodrow and Lola Nix; and her grandmother, Leota Power of Ballinger.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at 7th Street Baptist Church in Ballinger with Bro. Tony King officiating.

Memorial donations may he made to Destiny: FutureQuest, Inc. God has freed her spirit and she has gone to be in Heaven.

Mary Shaw

Mary Eleise Hodge Shaw was born on Sept. 23, 1908, in Beasley to the union of O.J. Hodge Jr. and Willie Louise Harrison Hodge. On July 20, 1930, she married Melvin Herbert Shaw in Plainview. She passed away at the age of 94 years and two months at Gulf Coast Medical Center on Nov. 23, 2002, after an extended illness.

Most of her married life she lived in Pledger where she and her husband operated a country store and gas station. She was also a patient and dedicated school teacher for 28 years. After teaching in one-room schoolhouses in Magnet and Pledger, she taught elementary school in Iago, Boling and Newgulf. She retired from Boling Independent School District in 1974.

Besides her husband of 49 years and her parents, Mrs. Shaw was preceded in death by a son, Melvin Herbert Shaw Jr. and a brother, Lloyd Hodge.

Mrs. Shaw was devoted to her family and always put their needs above her own. She is survived by brothers, Robert Hodge of Pledger and Dexter Hodge and wife, Jo, of Bryan; a daughter, Bettye Louise Fawcett and husband, Maurice, of Waco; and a son, DeVoy Shaw and wife, Jean, of Boling. Also surviving her are her grandchildren and their spouses, Diana Lee and husband, Ralph, of Waco, Gene Fawcett and wife, Leanne, of Chandler, Ariz., Elizabeth Carson and husband, Chris, of Waco, Diedre Williams and husband, Monty, of Denton, Sadie Jones and husband, David, of Spring, and Laura Bohne and husband, Derek, of Midland.

Her 14 great-grandchildren, David and Sarah Lee, Chelsea, Lauren and Grace Fawcett, Joshua and Jacob Carson, Whitney and Tanner Williams, Jason, Jessica and Jordan Jones and Collin and Kevin Bohne, also survive her. Her loss will also be felt by many nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Iago Federated Church in lago with Mr. Mickey Reynolds officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Pallbearers were Tom Chapman, Dexter Hodge Jr., Richard Hodge, Jimmy Somers, Billy Wayne Tabor and Gene Fawcett.

Mrs. Shaw was a member of Iago Federated Church. In lieu of flowers, those desiring to do so, may make donations in her memory to lago Federated Church, P.O. Box 576, Boling, Texas 77420 or South Texas Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1210, Beeville, Texas 78104.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
