Ima Simpson

Mrs. Ima Jo Craig Simpson, age 77, of Boling, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, in a Sugar Land hospital following an extended illness. She was born on March 31, 1925 in Streetman, the daughter of the late William Craig and Lorena Brock Craig.

Mrs. Simpson had been a resident of Boling since 1992 and was a former 40-year resident of Newgulf. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Boling. She married Max Earl Simpson Oct. 11, 1942, in Fairfield.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Skip Holman officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include her husband, Max Simpson of Boling; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Carol Simpson of Pledger and James and Joy Simpson of Newgulf; sister, Murlene Harman of Winkler; grandchildren, Scott Simpson, Craig Simpson, Melanie Simpson and Neil Simpson.; great-grandchildren are Colby Max Simpson, Logan Simpson and Carly Simpson.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Folmar, Larry Folmar, Brad Van Dyke, Scott Simpson, Craig Simpson and Joe Ned Jolley.

Honorary pallbearers are all of her many friends and neighbors.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to a charity or church of personal choice.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Lois Bahner

Lois G. Bahner, age 83, of Wharton, died Thursday night, March 27, 2003, in at Gulf Coast Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born on June 23, 1919, in Oklahoma Settlement in Montgomery County, the daughter of the late John Goodson Jr. and Myrtle Mary Cox Goodson Hill and step-daughter of William Marshall Hill.

Mrs. Bahner had been a resident of Wharton County since 1939 and was an assistant librarian at Wharton County Junior College for 22 years before her retirement. She married Leroy “Sonny” Bahner on March 17, 1936, in Schulenburg. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She and her husband were also members of the Strugglers Dance Club in El Campo and the Wharton Dance Club. She was preceded in death by a son, David Lane Bahner in 1992. She was Baptist by faith.

Following cremation, memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2003, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Hurley officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Sonny Bahner of Wharton; daughter and son-in-law; Linda and William Carl Duncan of Beaumont and La Porte; sisters, Estella Wilson of Columbus, Betty Seifert of Weimar and Ruth Ferguson of Liberty; grandchildren, Lauren Camille Faggard and David Gregson Bahner and a great-granddaughter, Amanda Roseanna Faggard.

Honorary Pallbearers were all of her many friends and neighbors.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the J.M. Hodges Library c/o Wharton County Junior College, 911 E. Boling Highway, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Dorothy Cotton

Funeral services for Dorothy Louise Cotton, 75, of Wharton, were held Saturday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. P.F. Thomas officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Cotton died March 26, 2003 at her residence. She was born on Nov. 26, 1927, in Brownwood, the daughter of the late William G.C. and Opal Louise Womble Stewart.

She married C.J. Cotton on Nov. 16, 1946, in San Marcos. He preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1988. She worked as the manager of the Diamond Shamrock on Richmond Road for more than 20 years prior to retiring. Mrs. Cotton had resided in Wharton since 1973 and was a former resident of Houston. She was Methodist by faith.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and James Swindell of Wharton and Debbie and Roy Barree of Wharton; brother, Bill Stewart of Anson; and two grandsons. Two infant sons and her sister, Bobbye Long, preceded her in death.

Elo Lutringer

Elo Emil Lutringer, age 82, of El Campo, died Thursday, March 27, 2003, in El Campo. He was born on Oct. 23, 1920, in Temple, the son of the late Edward and Adala Kessler Lutringer.

Mr. Lutringer was a veteran of World War II having served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army. He married Laverne E. Elliott on Oct. 20, 1957, in Glen Flora. She preceded him in death on May 14, 1991. Mr. Lutringer moved to Wharton in 1957 and lived in Wharton until late in his life. He worked as a farmer and rancher until retiring in 1985. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Wharton, Farm Bureau, AARP and Senior Friends. He was an honorary member of the Pilot Club.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2003, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his sisters, Nora Lee Fairlee of Austin and Carol Pustejovsky of El Campo and his numerous nieces and nephews. His sisters, Minnie Alice Maerz and Annie Mae Mitchell, and his brother, Joe Lutringer, preceded him in death.

Pallbearers were Paul Pustejovsky, Phillip Parker, Michael Parker, Chad Weishuhn and Heath Mitchell.

Honorary pallbearers were Lucas Maerz Jr., Johnny Lutringer, Doug Fairlee, Charles Maerz, Charles Elliott, Christopher Parker, Gene Guffey and Jacek Szmkowski.

If desiring, memorials may be made to First United Methodist, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Henry Vandegrift

Henry David "Bud" Vandegrift, age 92, of the Burr community, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, in Wharton. He was born on Dec. 21, 1910, the son of the late Ira Vandegrift and Leona Reeder Vandegrift.

He moved to the Burr community in 1911 and was a 1927 graduate of Wharton High School. He married Amanda Marie Allen Lane on Feb. 9, 1935 in Wharton. She preceded him in death on Jan. 5, 2000. Mr. Vandegrift was a self-employed farmer and rancher until his retirement. Mr. Vandegrift loved to fish, garden and share his bounties with his many friends. He also enjoyed visiting with his friends and telling old stories about his life.

Graveside services and interment were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2003, at Wharton City Cemetery with Rev. Don Hurley officiating.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Somers and husband, Jimmy, of Boling; sister, Bessie Pratka of Patterson, La.; grandchildren, Liz Richardson and husband, Jack, of Boling, Gay Joines and husband, Gary, of Boling, Ross Somers of Houston, Amanda Somers of Houston and Sandra Vandegrift of Odessa; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his son, Jim C. Vandegrift, and a sister, Iona Strarup.

Honorary pallbearers were Verlie Sherrill, L.B. Sanders, David Joines, Gary Joines, Weldon Boerger, Jack Richardson, Joe Rebecek and Monroe Breithaupt.

Monroe Breithaupt

Funeral services for Monroe Breithaupt, 88, of Wharton, were held Monday at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Jerald Parten officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Breithaupt died Dec. 12, 2003, in a Sugar Land hospital after a brief illness. He was born on Nov. 19, 1915. in Weimar, the son of the late Alvin Breithaupt and Henrietta Kech Breithaupt.

He had been a resident of Wharton for the past 78 years and was Lutheran by faith. Mr. Breithaupt was a farmer and rancher all of his life until his retirement. He married Elsie Marie Rieger on April 11, 1956, in Victoria and she preceded him in death on Jan. 10, 1996. Mr. Breithaupt was also preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Breithaupt was a member of American Legion Post No. 87 in Wharton.

Survivors include sisters, Mae Bell Pierce of New Caney, Lillian Zatopek of Wharton and Viola Blackman of Groves; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to a charity of personal choice.

Ross Ivy

Funeral services for Ross C:. Ivy, 83, of West Point and formerly of Angleton, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Plum with Rev. Stanley Petru officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery . A rosary service was held Tuesday.

Mr. Ivy died Dec. 13, 2003, at his home after an extended illness. He was horn May 14, 1920, in Muldoon to Irvin and Sallie Pitman Ivy.

In Plum he married Marie Julia Reiss on June 21, 1941. Mr. Ivy was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Sons of Hermann Lodge No. 238 at Plum, board member of Woodmen of the World, formerly an umpire and manager of Little League Baseball and Teenage Baseball in Angleton and played for the Lake Jackson Gators Fast Pitch Softball Team for many years. He was on the board of directors of Fayette Electric Co-op for some 12 years, member of the V.F.W. Post No. 5254 in La Grange, a retired volunteer fireman in Angleton; Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and for 15 years was a member of the Angleton City Council. For 10 years he served as a member of the Drainage District in Angleton.

Survivors include wife of 62 years, Marie Ivy of West Point; daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Gerald Buchta of Lake Texoma; sons and daughters-in-law, Anthony and Shriley Ivy of Angleton and Fred Dennis and Cynthia Ivy of Hungerford; brother, John lra Ivy of Muldoon; 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Lynn; a sister, Ruth Darling; by his parents; and by a great-grandchild, Kent.

If desiring, memorials may be made to Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery Fund or to the Muldoon Baptist Church.

Mary Matcek

Mary Matcek, age 91, of Wharton, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, in a Wharton hospital following an extended illness. She was born on Jan. 27, 1912, in Yoakum, the daughter of the late August Chilek and Anna Micola Chilek.

Mrs. Matcek had been a resident of Wharton County for over 50 years and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. She was also a member of the SPJST. She married Charlie Matcek on Jan. 25, 1941, in Wharton and he preceded her in death on June 7, 1992. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

A rosary was recited at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday evening at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Henry Rachunek and Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in the Needville Public Cemetery in Needville.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Charlie and Vickie Matcek of Brazoria, Stanley and Linda Matcek of New Caney and Donald Matcek of Lake Jackson; brother and sister-in-law, Adolph and Elsie Chilek of Boling; sisters-in-law, Nancy Schriewer of Rosenberg, and Tracy Ridenour of Houston; grandchildren, Kyle Matcek, Eric Matcek, Robyn Kendrick and Susan Matcek. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Pallbearers will be John Kubes, John Roades, Julius Pavlas, Clement Chilek, Bernard Chilek and John Chemlik.

Honorary Pallbearers are Eric Matcek, Robert Schriewer and Claude Ray Vickers.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to your favorite charity.

Senara Medrano

Funeral services for Senara Medrano, 95, of Wharton, were held Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary was recited before the funeral mass.

Mrs. Medrano died Dec. 12, 2003, in at Gulf Coast Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born June 26, 1908, in Bay City, the daughter of the late Antonio Luna and Casamira Flores Luna.

She had been a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Mrs. Medrano was also preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.

Survivors include numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Frances Miller

Funeral services for Frances Anne Miller, 98, of El Campo, were held Tuesday at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Hillje with Rev. Clement Quainoon officiating. Burial followed in St. Andrews Catholic Cemetery.

Mrs. Miller died Dec. 12, 2003. She was born Aug. 23, 1905, in Welcome to the late Adam and Sophie Kech Guthmann.

She retired from the Hillje Czech Catholic Home after 22 years of service. She was a Catholic.
Survivors include daughters, Nettie Babcock of Kerrville and Joyce Speigel of Port Lavaca; sons, Alton Miller of El Campo and Richard Miller of Port Lavaca; sisters, Emma Labay of El Campo and Sue Walker of Pasadena; brother, Leroy Guthmann of Lissie; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Miller; daughter, Oleavia Dornak; sons, Leo Miller, Lester Miller, Melvin Miller and Otto Miller; sisters, Viola Ranly, Vlasta Gertson, Leona Miller, Regina Wisnieski and Minola Kissee; and brother, Harold Guthmann.

If desiring, memorials may be made to a charity of personal choice.

Harlan Speidel

Funeral services for Harlan Richard Speidel, 56, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Friends may call for visitation after 6 p.m. Thursday.

Johnnie Williams

Funeral services for Johnnie Willie “J.W.” Williams, 66, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen’s Baptist Church with Rev. A.J. Kemper officiating. Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery in Kendleton. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.
Mr. Williams died Dec. 15, 2003, at Avalon Place. He was born June 6, 1937, in Wharton, to Marion and Mildred Runnels Williams.

Survivors include mother and step-father, Carlos and Mildred Jackson of Wharton; son, Anthony Armstrong of Wharton; daughters, Mildred Scarlett and Marilyn Kearney Jayasingbe, both of Wharton; 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
