Mozelle VonDerAu

Mozelle VonDerAu, age 79, of Wharton, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, in Wharton. She was born on Oct. 19, 1923, in Harlingen, the daughter of the late Henry Clifford Martin and Beulah Lea Whitehorn Martin.

She was a graduate of Boling High School and a former drum major. Mrs. VonDerAu was a former resident of Newgulf and Lane City before moving to Wharton in 1946. She married Robert Charles VonDerAu Sr. on July 14, 1942, in Houston. He preceded her in death on March 29, 1991. Mrs. VonDerAu was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Wharton. She was also a member of the Wharton Garden Club and served as president of the Gulf Coast Medical Guild.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. today, Saturday, March 8, 2003, at First Baptist Church of Wharton with Rev. Mack Mathis and Dr. Donnie Melton officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughters and son in law, Becky Escobar and husband, Rick, of Richmond and Jeanne VonDerAu of Wharton; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Charles VonDerAu Jr. and wife, Becky, of El Campo; grandchildren, Erich Hartzog and wife, Amy, Becca Adams and husband, Ronnie, Jamie Harris and husband, Herbie, Dawn Ford and husband, Grady, Rob Van Slyke, Kim Connell, Kirsten Escobar, Karie Durham and husband, Matthew, Kim Miller and husband, Chad, Ann Montalvo and husband, Domingo, Robert Charles VonDerAu III and John Martin VonDerAu; and 10 great-grandchildren; special caregivers, Doretta Autry, Doris Smith, Dora Robles, Dora Lands, Shonda Washington, Yvonne Washington and a very special nurse at Avalon Nursing Home, Carlyn Young.
Pallbearers are Erich Hartzog, Ronnie Adams, John Martin VonDerAu, Robert Charles VonDerAu III, Herbie Harris, Domingo Montalvo and Chad Miller.

Adeline T. Kughn

Adeline Thekla Kughn, age 82, of Wharton, died Thursday, March 21, 2003, in a Hillje nursing home following an extended illness. She was born on Jan. 14, 1921, in New Braunfels, the daughter of the late Albert Ferdinand Klatt and Rosalie Mathilda Kunde Klatt.

Mrs. Kughn had been a resident of Wharton County most of her life. She attended schools in New Braunfels, Seguin and Crescent. Mrs. Kughn was Lutheran by faith and formerly attended the Methodist Church in Glen Flora. She married Jake William Kughn on Jan. 1, 1950, in El Campo and he preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1988. Mrs. Kughn assisted her husband at the Taiton Feed Mill and with the family farm. Three brothers also preceded her in death, Raymond A. Klatt, Adelbert Klatt and Albertus Klatt; and one sister, Telka Treybig.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2003, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Cartwright officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Laverne Rose and Leroy Bacak of El Campo, Cathy Diane and Robert Cartwright of Alvin, Carol Ann and J. Mark Gresham of Wharton and Linda Faye and Abel Gonzales of Wallis; sisters and brother-in-law, Roma R. Stancliff of El Campo, Zora D. and Edmund Chaka of Wharton and Delrose A. Stevens of Wharton; brother and sisters-in-law, R.R. and Pauline Klatt of El Campo and Edna Guess of Hillje; grandchildren include L. James Bacak, Lachelle Pasak, Ryan Cartwright, Raymond Cartwright, Rachel Cartwright, Jennifer Hart, Lori Krpec, Amy Gresham, Savannah Gresham, Adam Gonzales, Kate Gonzales and Micah Gonzales; eight great-grandchildren also survive.

Pallbearers were James Cartwright, Hart Cartwright, Ryan Cartwright, Adam Gonzales, Melvin Klatt, Jerry Fabrygal, James Chaka, Al Klatt Jr. and Lloyd Klatt.

Honorary pallbearers were Christian Bacak, Bailey Pasak, Jacob Schulz, Shane Ryan, Jessica Hart, Kevin Krpec, Mycol Tong and Anthony Tong.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to: American Diabetes Association, 2400 Augusta Drive, Suite 420, Houston, Texas 77057, or Wharton County Library, 1920 N. Fulton, Wharton, Texas 77488 or a church or charity of personal choice.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Ramiro Mendoza

Funeral services for Ramiro Mendoza, 51, of Bay City, were held Tuesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Wharton City Cemetery. A rosary service was held Monday at Matthews Funeral Home.

Mr. Mendoza died March 23, 2003, in Hermann Hospital in Houston after an extended illness. He was born Jan. 15, 1952, in Rio Grande to Ignacio Mendoza and Eduvijes Diaz.

He was a lifelong resident of Bay City and married Tomasa Mendoza. Mr. Mendoza worked as a truck driver and was Catholic by faith.

Survivors include wife, Tomasa Mendoza; daugher, Mary Ann Mendoza; sons, Ramiro Mendoza Jr. and Roman Perez; sisters and brother-in-law, Lidia and Victor Bentacur, Julie Mendoza and Rosa Mendoza; brothers, Joe Mendoza, Miguel Mendoza and Rafael Mendoza.

Richard Seydler

Following cremation, private memorial services for Richard Warren Seydler, 80, of East Bernard, were held.

Mr. Seydler died March 21, 2003, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born on July 25, 1922, in El Campo, the son of the late Henry Seydler and Edna Kleckler Seydler.

He had been a lifelong resident of Wharton County living in East Bernard. Mr. Seydler married Ella Mae Hensley on July 31, 1942, in Wharton. He was a farmer and rancher since 1942.

Survivors include wife, Ella Mae Seydler of East Bernard; daughters and son-in-law, Geneva and Pat Viaclovsky of Wharton and Margaret Wall of Phoenix, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law, Harry and Nancy Seydler of East Bernard; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to: Hospice, 1102 N. Mechanic, Suite B, El Campo, Texas 77437.

Edna Kassler

Funeral services for Edna Kassler, age 92, of Damon, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Needville with the Rev. Fred Banda officiating. Burial will follow in Needville Public Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers are John Dietz, Warren Smalley, Marvin Mesecke, Ernest Mesecke Jr., Alton Mesecke, and Marvin Preuss.

Mrs. Kassler passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Oct. 25, 1910, in Needville to parents, Ernst and Jane Heuvel Mesecke.

She and her husband, Otto Kassler, farmed cotton most of their lives. She owned the Farmerette Cafe in Damon and was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Vernon Gorka, and a son, Curtis Kassler.
Her grandchildren, Carla Dietz and husband John of Seattle, Wa.; Jimmy Kassler and wife, Sharon, of Arlington; Janet Smalley and husband Warren, of Friendswood; and Harlan Kassler of Austin, survive her. She is also survived by her beloved great-grandchildren, Breanna, Sarah and Andrew Dietz; Devon and Katie Kassler and Sheldon, Hailey and Cierra Smalley and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel United Church of Christ, 9018 Church St., Needville, Texas 77461.

Funeral services are under the direction of Garmany & Carden Funeral Directors, Inc., 3103 School St., in Needville.

Alice Maloy

Funeral services for Alice Ruth Bunch Maloy, 58, of Wharton, were held Friday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Don Hurley officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Maloy died March 18, 2003, in a Houston hospital following an extended illness. She was born on May 13, 1944, in Stevenson, Ala., the daughter of Charles Luther Bunch and Allie Pearl Johnson Bunch.

She had been a resident of Wharton since 1975 and was a member of College Heights Baptist Church in Wharton. She married James V. Maloy on Jan. 3, 1974, in Boling. Mrs. Maloy helped her husband at Dairy Queen in Wharton. She was preceded in death by her step-father, Lloyd C. James; and brother, Charles Luther Bunch Jr.

Survivors include her husband, James Maloy of Wharton; daughters and step-daughters, Yvonne Karlette Pfertner of Round Rock, Lori Lynnette Mata of Wharton, Cheryl Wolcott of Marietta, Ga., Candace Hays of Dripping Springs, Dawna Maloy of Austin and Tammy Payne of Bullard; mother, Allie Pearl James of Boling; father, Charles Luther Bunch Sr. of Ohio; sisters, Carolyn Gerdes of Boling and Sheila Sanor of Alliance, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to College Heights Baptist Church, P.O. Box 106, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Catarino Vega

Funeral services for Catarino M. Vega Jr., 88, of Temple, were held Wednesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Tuesday at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Vega died March 17, 2003, in Temple. He was born on Nov. 27, 1914, in Victoria, the son of the late Catarino Vega Sr. and Dolores Molina Vega.

He married Angelita Carrillo in 1939 in Victoria and she preceded him in death on Jan. 8, 1993. He was employed as an electrician for the Forester Air Force Base in Victoria and the Todd Shipyard in Galveston. He also worked in the maintenance department of the Brazosport High School and as a building engineer for the El Monte School District in El Monte, Calif., until his retirement in 1970. He attended St. Lukes Catholic Church in Temple.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia Campos and husband, Alonzo of Temple; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Rodriguez of Manitoba, Can., Catarino Vega III and wife, Joanmarie of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ramon Vega and wife, Doris of La Puente, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel Vega Salinas; son, Geronimo Vega; sister, Ester Cervantes and brother, Ted Vega.

William Hodges

Funeral services for William E. “Trip” Hodges III, 43, of Rosenberg, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call for visitation today, Saturday, from 6-8 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Hodges died May 28, 2003, at his residence. He was born Aug. 23, 1959, in Del Rio, the son of Winona Mae Carroll Hodges and the late William E. Hodges, Jr.

He graduated from New Boston High School in 1978. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. Mr. Hodges married Leah Storey Sept. 25, 1993, in Wharton. He worked for Reliant Energy the last 20 years and was currently a plant operator at the W.A. Parish Plant. He is a former resident of Wharton and had lived in Rosenberg for the last 12 years.

Survivors include his wife, Leah Storey Hodges of Rosenberg; mother, Winona Hodges of Wharton; daughter, Jeanna D. Hodges of Rosenberg; son, William E. Hodges IV of Rosenberg; step-daughters, Laurielea Nesbitt of Wallis, Kristen Curry of Channelview and Maegan Curry of Rosenberg; step-son, John W. Nesbitt Jr. of Rosenberg; sister, Pamela Hardeman of York, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

Frances Posey

Funeral services for Frances Posey, 88, of Nacogdoches were held Wednesday at Chireno United Methodist Church with Rev. Farrar Bentley officiating. Burial followed Thursday in Wharton Cemetery.

Mrs. Posey died May 26, 2003, in Nacogdoches. She was born Aug. 9, 1914, in Clarksville to Benjamin and Anna Turpin Hancock.

She was a homemaker and a faithful member of Chireno United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Posey was preceded in death by her husbands, Arthur Lapp in 1963 and Carter Posey in 1975.
Survivors include her son, Benjy Lapp and wife Davalyn of Friendswood; and nephew, Burnavy Munson of Newark, Del. She also leaves two special friends who were her angels in time of need and brightened her days and saw to her needs, Mary Louise Fleniken and Farrar Bentley.

Memorials may be made to Chireno United Methodist Church.

Mary Myers

Funeral services for Mary Bratcher Myers, 92, formerly of Hungerford, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Center Union Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Family visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Center Union Baptist Church.

Mrs. Myers died May 23, 2003, in Park Plaza Hospital in Houston. She was born Sept. 18, 1910, in Seguin to the late Rufus and Pricilla Matthew Bratcher.

As a young child growing up in East Bernard she joined Little Zion Baptist Church in Kendleton. After marriage to Hannibal Myers they became lifelong members of Center Union Baptist Church in Hungerford. Mrs. Myer was an active member in the church. She sang in the choir, kept her children involved in Sunday School, the choir and any other activities relating to the church. As a member of the community she was active in the PTA and worked at Hungerford Consolidated High School until she retired. Mrs. Myers was a devoted wife for more than 50 years.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Hannibal and Betty Myers Jr. and Melvin Lewis Myers, all of Houston, and Carol Dawson Myers of San Pedro, Calif.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hannibal Myers Sr., four sisters, seven brothers and her youngest child, Forrest Lancaster Myers.

In lieu of flowers a contribution may be made to Center Union Baptist Church in her memory.

Lucy LaDieu

Lucy Macha LaDieu, age 90, of Wharton, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at her home. She was born on Dec. 18, 1912, in Hungerford, the daughter of the late Frank John Macha Sr. and Mary Kneitz Macha. She was one of the first born American generation of the Hungerford Macha family.

She married Julius Thomas LaDieu of New Orleans, La., on July 22, 1937, in Hungerford. He preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 1988. On May 24, 1943, she was hired as a stenographer at Texasgulf Sulphur Company, in Newgulf, and 33 years later in July of 1975, retired as an accounts payable supervisor.

Mrs. LaDieu graduated from New Vienna Grammar School and attended the Hungerford Independent School District. In 1927, at the age of 14 years, her father died and she was forced to quit school to pick cotton in order to help save the family farm. After her marriage, she took a correspondence course with the Chicago Career Institute, attended Boling ISD for one year and thereafter, attended Wharton County Junior College on several occasions.

She was very active in numerous church and community affairs including, serving as president of the following organizations: Wharton County Heart Association, East Wharton County Heart Association, Wharton County Tuberculosis Association, East Wharton County United Fund, Wharton County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, Wharton Business and Professional Women’s’ Clubs, Inc., Wharton County Junior College Booster Club, Wharton Chamber of Commerce and WCJC Foundation. Mrs. LaDieu served on the Board of Directors for the District 13 Coastal Bend Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association, Wharton Chamber of Commerce, Wharton County March of Dimes, Wharton County Youth Association, District 3 Texas Federation of Business and Professional Women’s’ Clubs, Inc., and the Czech Catholic Home for the Aged in Hillje. She also served as a Crusade Chairman for the Wharton County Chapter of the American Cancer Society and as County Chairman of the 1959 March of Dimes. She was honored to receive the 1988 Citizen of the Year award from the Wharton Chamber of Commerce and the first Hall of Fame Award from the WCJC Alumni Association. She was finance chairman of St. Joseph’s Catholic Mission, and in 1982-83 raised $300,000 to build its new church. Lucy and Julius each have a $10,000 WCJC Scholarship Endowment Fund and in 1991 Mrs. LaDieu presented WCJC with a $100,000 initial gift in the form of a grant to begin a capital fund drive for the construction of the LaDieu Technology Center on WCJC Campus.

Mrs. LaDieu was a member of Holy Family Altar Society, National Council of Catholic Women, KJZT Lodge No. 57, SPJST Lodge, Catholic Daughters of America Court No. 1990, St. Joseph’s Parish Council and St. Joseph’s Catholic Mission of Boling.

Funeral Mass services were held 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Monsignor Dan Scheel and Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Monday evening at Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating.

Survivors include her brother, August E. Macha of Hungerford and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Sophie Macha Krenek, Mary Macha Sikora, Emma Jane Macha, Annie Macha Pilcik and two infant sisters; brothers, Emil Macha Sr., Frank J. Macha Jr., Louie Macha, Joe Macha and two infant brothers.

Pallbearers were Clinton P. White, Johnnie D. Svatek, Adolph Chilek, Dr. Elbert Hutchins, Sylvan Miori and Kenneth Johse.

Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Herman Wolff, Dr. John Wissinger, Byron Soderman and Charles Drees.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Mission, Boling, Texas 77420 or to the WCJC LaDieu Tech Building Fund, 911 E. Boling Highway, Wharton, Texas 77488.
