Jessie Hicks
Funeral services for Jessie Lee Hicks, 80, of Hungerford will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. C. Fields officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Center Union Baptist Church. Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hick died May 16, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Sept. 11, 1922, in Wharton to Ike and Easter Burton Moore.

Survivors include sons, George Hicks of Houston, Jesse Hicks of Missouri City, Elijah Hicks of Richmond, Marvin Hicks of Wharton and Melvin Hicks of Richmond; daughters, Ruby Hunter of Hitchcock, Mary Wheatley of Houston, Barbara Bolden of Missouri City, Rebecca Hardy of Houston, Carol Dickerson of Houston, Alma Davis of Missouri City, Joyce Jackson of Houston, Deborah McCary of Missouri City and Shelia Owens of Houston; sister, Selena Mack of Houston; 32 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Juanita Bowers
Memorial service for Juanita Bowers, 67, of Wharton was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Matthews Funeral Home with Rev. M.E. Matthews officiating.

Mrs. Bowers died May 15, 2003, at Triumph Hospital in Sugar Land following a lengthy illness. She was born July 1, 1935 in Marietta, Ohio, to Howard and Gladys McKnight. She had been a resident of Wharton for 24 years. On Nov. 4. 1953, she married Russell Bowers who preceded her in death.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Roy Cunningham of Ohio; son and daughter-in-law, William and Delores Bowers; sisters Kate, Joann McKnight, Doris duffy, Wilima McKnight; a brother, Ralph McKnight; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

George R. Garza
Funeral services for George R. Garza, 61, of Boling, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Wharton Funeral Home chapel with David Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial park Cemetery in Wharton.

Mr. Garza died May 15, 2003, Needville. He was born April 15, 1942, in Boling, the son of Alberto and Julia Rodriguez Garza, now deceased.

Mr. Garza was employed in the traffic department of Texasgulf Sulpher Co. until his retirement in 1992. He married Eva Rangel on August 13, 1977 in Boling. He was a member of Grace Community Fellowship Church in Needville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Aaron Garza Sr.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Garza; daughters Amy Rangel of Wharton and Amanda Garza of Boling; sons Adam Garza and Andrew Garza of Boling, Rick Garza of Wharton; sisters Sophia Rivera of Wallis and Corina Garza of El Campo; brothers, Albert Garza and Larry Garza of Boling, Jesse Garza of Clute, Ray Garza and Santos Garza of West Columbia; and three grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorial be made to Grace Community Fellowship, Needville, 2705 Richmond Road, Needville, Texas, 77461.

Juanita Bowers
Memorial services for Juanita Bowers, 67, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Matthews Funeral Home.
Ms. Bowers died May 15, 2003.

Juanita Castro
Funeral services for Juanita Sosa Castro, 78, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home.
Ms. Castro died May 15, 2003.

Dorothy Johnson
Following cremation, a memorial services for Dorothy Mae Johnson, 73, of Killeen, will be held 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Little Concord Baptist Church with Rev. C. Jackson officiating.

Mrs. Johnson died May 15, 2003, at Metroplex Hospital in Killeen. She was born Feb. 17, 1930, in Wharton to Nook and Nannie Brown Jackson.

Survivors include father, Nook Jackson of Wharton; daughter, Ernestine Evans of Killeen; sons and daughters-in-law, Otis and Ann Jackson of S.W.

Lakeview, Wash., Lawrence Jackson and Roger and Viola Johnson, all of Wharton; sisters, Rosie Amboree of Corpus Christi, Ozie Armstrong of Wharton; brothers and sister-in-law, Willie Jackson of Corpus Christi, Edward and Jo Jackson of San Antonio, Cleopher Jackson of Wharton, Warren Jackson of Houston and Mose Jackson of Sweeny; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Pauline Ramirez
Pauline DeLeon Garcia Ramirez, age 62, of Wharton died Thursday, May 15, 2003, in Wharton. She was born on Nov. 7, 1940, in Boling, the daughter of the late Jesus Garcia and Maria Nives Garcia.

Mrs. Ramirez was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Wharton. She married Guadalupe Driscoll Ramirez on Jan. 11, 1957, in Wharton. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Funeral mass services will be held 9 a.m. today, Saturday, May 17, 2003 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Friday evening at the Wharton Funeral Home.

Survivors include her husband, Guadalupe Ramirez of Wharton; daughters, Mary E. Ramirez of Tyler, Gloria Garcia Ramirez of Austin and Martha Ramirez Flores of Wharton; sons, Lupe Ramirez Jr. of Wharton, Julius Garcia Ramirez of Bay City, David Garcia Ramirez of Wharton, Jesse Garcia Ramirez of Wharton, Joe Angel Garcia Ramirez of Bay City, James Garcia Ramirez of Wharton, Jimmie Garcia Ramirez of Wharton and Luis Garcia Ramirez of Austin; sister, Hilaria Lopez of Bay City; brothers, Daniel Garcia Sr. of Wharton, Frank Garcia of Pearland, Conrad Garcia of Wharton, Luis Garcia of Wharton and Pedro Guzman of Wharton; 31 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Maria Ramirez, and a son, Ruben Garcia Ramirez.

Pallbearers are Joe Ramirez, Jesse Ramirez, Simon Ramirez, Luis Garcia Ramirez, Eric Ramirez, Tim Ramirez, Daniel Garcia Sr. and Julius Garcia Ramirez.

Rinehart Coufal

Funeral services for Rinehart Coufal, 65, of Sugar Land, were held Friday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Orville Roberts officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Coufal died May 27, 2003 at his residence. He was born on Oct. 30, 1937, in Beasley, the son of the late Henry and Hilda Rosenkranz Coufal.

He married Bette Frances Smith on Dec. 28, 1957, in Wharton. She preceded him in death on Feb. 27, 1989. Mr. Coufal had lived in Sugar Land since 1971 and was a former resident of Hungerford and Houston. He worked for Harris County Oil prior to retiring in 2000.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Malinda and Greg Martin of Sugar Land and Judy and Rob Shimer of Lexington; sister, Lillie Talas of East Bernard; and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his brother, Marvin Coufal.

Annie Roberts

Funeral services for Annie Lee Roberts, 85, of Wharton, were held Tuesday at New Mount Olive Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmie Wright officiating. Burial followed in New Mount Olive Cemetery.
Mrs. Roberts died May 30, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Jan. 14, 1918, in Wharton to Robert and Rachel Hicks Fisher Sr.

Survivors include husband, Johnny Roberts of Wharton; sons and daughter-in-law, Johnnie Lee Roberts and Willie and Katie Roberts, all of Wharton; brothers, R.L. Fisher of Houston and Lee Andrew Fisher of Macon, Ga.; sister, Ella Louise Fisher of Los Angeles, Calif.; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Ruth Trow

Funeral services for Ruth Elizabeth Damron Trow, 94, of Wharton, were held Monday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Mack Mathis officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Trow died May 30, 2003, in Wharton. She was born July 30, 1908, in Wharton to Wilson and Mary Zernial Damron.

On April 6, 1928, she married John Harry Trow of Trinity, who preceded her in death in 1979. They had one son, John Trow Jr. Mrs. Trow was a member of the First Baptist Church for 84 years and took an active part in all of the church’s programs, including teaching Sunday School, being active in the W.M.U. and was a member of the Joy Bells, the Senior Adult Choir. She also taught the Bible Study at the Wharton Manor Nursing Home for many years. Mrs. Trow was also a member of the A.A.R.P. and the Wharton Book Review Club, being a “caller” for both organizations. She worked a number of years in the Tax Assessor and Collectors office in the Wharton County Court House and later worked for Houston Lighting and Power Company, as assistant office manager for 30 years, until her retirement in 1971.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, John and Laura Trow Jr. of Houston; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one great great grandson and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

William Hodges

Funeral services for William E. “Trip” Hodges III, 43, of Rosenberg, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call for visitation today, Saturday, from 6-8 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Hodges died May 28, 2003, at his residence. He was born Aug. 23, 1959, in Del Rio, the son of Winona Mae Carroll Hodges and the late William E. Hodges, Jr.

He graduated from New Boston High School in 1978. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. Mr. Hodges married Leah Storey Sept. 25, 1993, in Wharton. He worked for Reliant Energy the last 20 years and was currently a plant operator at the W.A. Parish Plant. He is a former resident of Wharton and had lived in Rosenberg for the last 12 years.

Survivors include his wife, Leah Storey Hodges of Rosenberg; mother, Winona Hodges of Wharton; daughter, Jeanna D. Hodges of Rosenberg; son, William E. Hodges IV of Rosenberg; step-daughters, Laurielea Nesbitt of Wallis, Kristen Curry of Channelview and Maegan Curry of Rosenberg; step-son, John W. Nesbitt Jr. of Rosenberg; sister, Pamela Hardeman of York, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

Frances Posey

Funeral services for Frances Posey, 88, of Nacogdoches were held Wednesday at Chireno United Methodist Church with Rev. Farrar Bentley officiating. Burial followed Thursday in Wharton Cemetery.

Mrs. Posey died May 26, 2003, in Nacogdoches. She was born Aug. 9, 1914, in Clarksville to Benjamin and Anna Turpin Hancock.

She was a homemaker and a faithful member of Chireno United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Posey was preceded in death by her husbands, Arthur Lapp in 1963 and Carter Posey in 1975.
Survivors include her son, Benjy Lapp and wife Davalyn of Friendswood; and nephew, Burnavy Munson of Newark, Del. She also leaves two special friends who were her angels in time of need and brightened her days and saw to her needs, Mary Louise Fleniken and Farrar Bentley.

Memorials may be made to Chireno United Methodist Church.

Eula Davis

Funeral services for Eula Clemmie Davis, 97, of Spanish Camp, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Camp Zion Rising Star United Baptist Church with Rev. C. Owens Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today, Wednesday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. today.

Mrs. Davis died July 25, 2003, at Avalon Place. She was born May 19, 1906, in Spanish Camp to W.H. and Alice Bryant Davis.

She spent her life in Spanish Camp. Mrs. Davis graduated from Wharton High School and returned to teach after receiving her teaching certificate at Prairie View A&M College. She remained active in her life both as a professional and with Rising Star Baptist Church. Mrs. Davis sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and held various positions in the Women’s Society. During the Depression, she taught adult classes with the government W.P.A. program. She was active in the 20th Century District Association. She was also a member of the St. Roseway Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and held various positions throughout her membership.

Survivors include daughter, Velma Brown of Las Vegas, Nev.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Johnnie Jedlicka

Funeral services for Johnnie Frank Jedlicka, 54, of Needville, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Needville with Rev. James Ramsey officiating. Burial will follow in St. Michael’s Arc Angel Cemetery in Needville. A rosary was held Tuesday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

Mr. Jedlicka died July 26, 2003.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Needville. Mr. Jedlicka was involved with the Knights of Columbus Council No. 7067 and KJT and volunteered with the Pleak Volunteer Fire Department and Fort Bend County EMS. He had worked for more than 40 years at Texas Instruments in Stafford.

Survivors include wife of 30 years, Vivian Macha Jedlicka; daughters, Ann Jedlicka, Susan Jedlicka and Monica Jedlicka; sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Mac Mazoch, Helen and Charles Orsak, Rosemary and Floyd Srubar and Cathy Coufal; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Cris Jedlicka and Patrick and Sharon Jedlicka.

If desiring, memorials may be made to the Johnnie Jedlicka Memorial Fund, Vivian Ann Jedlicka-trustee, Southwest Bank Branch, Needville, Texas.
