Lisa Vidal

Lisa Ann Vidal, age 40, of Pearland, died Monday July 28, 2003, at her residence in Pearland. She was born on Nov. 17, 1962, in Cherry Point, N.C., the daughter of Robert Emil Vidal and the late Barbara Ann Beard Vidal.

She was a 29-year resident of Pearland and a former resident of Houston. Lisa was a 1981 graduate of Pearland High School and she later attended Houston Community College and San Jacinto Junior College. She was employed as a veterinary technician for 14 years for various clinics including, Edgebrook Animal Emergency Clinic, Beechnut Animal Emergency Clinic, and Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists, all in Houston, Clear Lake Forest Animal Clinic, Seabrook Veterinary Referral Service in Houston, Friendswood Animal Clinic and the Docktor Pet Center in Webster. Lisa was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pearland and she was a former member and chairperson of the Pearland PTO.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Bruton officiating. Interment will follow in the Border/Ansley Family Cemetery near Wharton.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara R. Wright of Wharton; parents, Robert E. and Julia Ansley Vidal of Pearland; paternal grandfather, Emilio Vidal of Houston; maternal grandmother, Doris Beard of Houston; sister, Amy Bush and husband Josh of Wharton; brother, Steven D. Vidal and wife, Joanne of Pearland; niece, Emily Vidal; nephews, Robert Steven Vidal and Joseph M. Gonzales. Numerous aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by grandfathers and grandmothers, and a brother, William Robert “Will” Vidal.

Pallbearers are Luis Aguilar, Linda Caldwell, Joseph M. Gonzales, Robert Coler, Adam Firkus, Williams Allen Ansley III, Joel Ansley, Dion Kirschman and Rose MacAskie.

Peggy Williamson

Peggy Marie Williamson, age 74, of Wharton, died Thursday, July 24, 2003, in a hospital in El Campo. She was born Aug. 4, 1928, in Wharton, the daughter of Fredrick Ashford and Leila Marie Medsker Johnston.

Mrs. Williamson graduated from Wharton High School in 1948. She married Billie Joseph Williamson on Aug. 31, 1957, in Wharton, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 28, 1986.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home Chapel with Paul Jones officiating. Cremation followed.

Survivors include her daughter, Leila Jeanette Williamson of Boling; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann and Buddy Tompkins, of Wharton and Patty and J.W. Wilkerson of Bacliff; brothers, Darwin Johnston of Wharton and Fred Johnston Jr., of Jennings, La.; and three grandchildren, Jessica Ruth Flournoy of Houston, Tonya Marie Garza of Austin and Shaun Joseph Garza of Wharton. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Nicholson, and a brother, Wayne Johnston.

Pallbearers were Brian Tompkins, Scooter Tompkins, Shaun Garza and Darwin Johnston.
Honorary pallbearers were Buddy Tompkins and Fred Johnston Jr.

Eula Davis
Funeral services for Eula C. Davis, 97, of Spanish Camp, are pending at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Davis died July 25, 2003, at Avalon Place.

Antonio Garcia
Antonio E. Garcia Sr., age 68, of Wharton died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in a Wharton nursing home following an extended illness. He was born on Jan. 17, 1935, in San Benito, the son of the late Casemitio Garcia and Margarita Estrada Garcia.
Mr. Garcia had been a resident of Wharton since 1956 and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. He married Constancia Mata on Aug. 29, 1956, in Wharton and she preceded him in death on Dec. 7, 1996. A brother, Mingo Garcia, also preceded Mr. Garcia in death in 2002. He worked for 30 years as a carpenter for Leedo Manufacturing in East Bernard and retired in 1996.
A rosary was recited Thursday evening at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2003, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
Survivors include his daughter, Margie Torres of Wharton; a son, Tony Garcia Jr. of Wharton; sister, Susie Avelos, and a brother, Fidel Garcia, both of Tampa, Fla.; grandchildren, April Torres, Audra Garcia, Anthony Garcia, Andrea Torres and Andrew Garcia. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Pallbearers were Catarino Mata, Steve Munoz, Rene Garcia, Charles Torres, Anthony Garcia and Tony Garcia Jr.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Avenue, Wharton, Texas 77488.
Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Genevieve Sikora
Genevieve Margaret McCabe Sikora, age 100, of Wharton, died Thursday, July 24, 2003, in a Wharton hospital. She was born on Aug. 4, 1902, in New York City, N.Y., the daughter of the late Peter Patrick and Ellen Mae Murphy McCabe.
Mrs. Sikora attended high school and college at Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio. She married Adolph Simon Sikora on Aug. 24, 1925, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. He preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 1963. She was a school teacher at New Vienna, Hungerford and Brooksville prior to working at Sharman’s Jewelry Store for many years. She had lived in Wharton since 1936. While her daughters were in school, she was active in the PTA and with the high school band mothers. After retiring, she volunteered at St. Thomas Thrift Shop and the Wharton County Historical Museum and was a former Candy Striper at Caney Valley Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas in Wharton and East Bernard. She also enjoyed canning and sharing her excellent dill pickles.
Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Tim Bucek officiating. A Catholic Daughters rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m. prior to the mass. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A wake service was held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2003, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating.
Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Ellen Mae and Jack Hays of West Columbia and Betty Joyce Sikora of Wharton; grandchildren and spouses, Jack and Andrea Hays of West Columbia, Jenna and Randy McEachern of Austin and Jeffrey and Gina Hays of Colorado Springs, Colo.; great-grandchildren, Sara and Amy Hays, Bailey and Hays McEachern and Kaitlin, Madeline and Caroline Hays.
Pallbearers are Jack Hays, Jenna Hays McEachern, Jeffrey Hays, Charles Davis, Randy McEachern and Hays McEachern.
Honorary pallbearers are August Brandl, Delfin Marek, Frank Urbanic, Dale Sikora, Brian Greenlees, Jacob Sikora, Irvin Arthur Sharman, Bill Yankowsky, Woody Woodson and Raymond Torp.

Funeral services for Peggy Marie Williamson, 74, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Ms. Williamson died Thursday, July 24, 2003.

Inez Wakefield
Funeral services for Inez Ina Unger Wakefield, 94, of Wharton, were held at 2 p.m. Friday 2003 in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Orville Roberts officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Wakefield died July 23, 2003, at her residence. She was born on Sept. 29, 1908, in Star County, the daughter of the late Emil and Minnie Lee Trammel Unger.
Mrs. Wakefield married Neal Everett Wakefield in 1926 and he preceded her in death on Oct. 26, 1970. She had been a resident of Wharton since 1932.
Mrs. Wakefield and her husband established Wakefield Motel in 1957, and she was the owner and manager until her retirement in 1975. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Wharton.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Maurice and Linda Wakefield of Fort Lupton, Colo.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her son and daughter-in-law, Neal and Margie Wakefield Jr., and infant son, Marcil Wakefield.

Laura Burlingame
Mrs. Laura Virginia Hubbell Burlingame, age 94, of Wharton, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, in a Wharton nursing home. She was born on May 19, 1909, in Hartford, Conn., the daughter of the late Lindley Dodd Hubbell and Nettie Perkins Stone Hubbell.
Mrs. Burlingame had been a resident of Wharton for the past 10 years and was a former resident of Las Vegas, Nev., for 49 years. She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Wharton. Mrs. Burlingame married Lawrence Deane Burlingame Jr. on Feb. 21, 1931, in New York City, N.Y., and he preceded her in death on March 17, 1990. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Madge Carey; sons-in-law, Paul J. Carey and John Holland Wanner; one grandson, Richard Lawrence Pursel; a sister, Madge Delano Hubbell Tweed and a brother, Lindley Williams Hubbell. Mrs. Burlingame was a homemaker and a lifelong Democrat. She was a member of the Connecticut Historical Society, Hubbell Family Historical Society, Platt Historical Society and the Society of the Descendants of the Founders of Hartford, Conn. She was also a member of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament and the Guild of all Souls.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Wharton with Rev. Hoss Guin officiating. Burial followed in the Memory Garden Cemetery in Las Vegas, Nev.
Survivors include her daughter, Ann Deane Wanner of Wharton; grandchildren, Deborah Ann Argo and husband Tom, Michael Deane Pursel, John William Pursel, Paul Deane Carey, Anthony Lawrence Carey and David Michael Carey; two step-grandchildren, Lisa Ann Baker and John Kevin Wanner; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Marcial Sorrel, Bob Brooke, Raymond Harrison Jr., Bob Ziegenhals, Allen Grosser and Curtis Wilkins.
In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorials to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 207 Bob-O-Link, Wharton, Texas 77488 or Hospice of El Campo, 1102 N. Mechanic, Suite B, El Campo, Texas 77437.

Lawrence Petitt
Funeral services for Lawrence Petitt, 79, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen’s Baptist Church with Rev. Ray Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.
Mr. Petitt died July 17, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Sept. 23, 1923, in Wharton to Elijah and Florida Whiddy Petitt.
Survivors include wife, Lillian Allen Petitt of Wharton; daughters, Margaret Evans of Houston and Rosa Colbert of Wharton; brother, Lee Petitt of Houston; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Zora Doris Chaka

Mrs. Zora Doris Chaka, age 79 of Wharton, died Sunday, July 13, 2003 in a Wharton hospital following a brief illness. She was born on October 4, 1923 in Comal County, the daughter of the late Albert Klatt and Rosalie Kunde Klatt.
A Rosary was recited Tuesday, July 15, at the Wharton Funeral Home. A funeral mass was held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Father Joe Vrana officiating. Burial followed in the Holy Cross Memorial Cemetery in El Campo.

Mrs. Chaka had been a life-long resident of Wharton County. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boling and the SPJST. She was married to Edmund Martin Chaka for 62 years. She was a homemaker and raised four sons who loved her very much. More than anything else, she loved visiting with her relatives and friends every chance she got. She and her husband loved dancing, and they loved traveling. She also enjoyed helping others as evidenced by the work she and her husband did for St. Joseph's annual bazaar for many years. Mrs. Chaka was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include her beloved husband, Edmund Chaka of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Rilla Chaka of Round Rock, Ron and Kathy Chaka of Wharton, Sid and Cynthia Chaka of Katy and Thomas Chaka of Richmond; sisters, Roma Stancliff of El Campo and Delrose Stevens of Wharton; brother, Rochus Klatt of El Campo; seven grandchildren, David Chaka, Kristina Chaka, Travis Chaka, Ashley Cha-ka, Brittney Chaka, Jason Chaka and Kevin Chaka. One granddaughter-in-law, Tanya Chaka, wife of Travis Chaka, three great-grandchildren, Shayelynn Chaka, Mason Chaka and Merek Chaka.
Pallbearers were Jerry Fabrygel, Jay Schroder, Al Klatt Jr., Travis Chaka, Jason Chaka, and Kevin Chaka.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, 11251 Northwest Freeway, Suite 300, Houston, TX 77092.

Patricia Duran

Patricia Duran, age 77, of Wharton, died Monday July 14, 2003 in Wharton. Funeral mass services were held 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with Father Raymond Jackson officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Tuesday evening at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church.
She was born on January 18, 1926 in Bonus, Texas, the daughter of the late Augustine Nunez and Macaria Badio Nunez.

Mrs. Duran was a homemaker and a 53-year resident of Wharton. She was a member of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and Mt. Carmel Catholic Church Choir. She was employed by Caney Valley Memorial Hospital as a nurse’s aide in the nursery until her retirement. She married Pete Duran on May 5, 1945 in Wharton County and was preceded in death by him on March 22, 1983.

Survivors include her daughters, Lupe Duran of Houston, Andrea Duran, Mary Olga Duran and Susan Duran all of Wharton; sons, Pete Duran Jr. and Rick Duran of Wharton; stepson, Gilbert Duran of Palacios; brother, August Nunez of Houston; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a step son, Robert Duran.

Willie Jackson Jr.

Funeral services for Willie Jackson Jr., 56, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19 at Sand Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday July 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home in Wharton.
Mr. Jackson died July 13, 2003 in Rosenberg. He was born February 12, 1947 in Eagle Lake to May Lou Jackson. He had lived in Wharton County all his life. Mr. Jackson was married to Rita Bluntson and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He was a Viet Nam veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Bluntson Jackson; daughters Chaudie Jackson, LaKeisha Jackson and Brittany Flowers and three grandchildren.

Lawrence Pettit

Funeral services for Lawrence Pettit, 79, of Wharton, are pending at Gooden-Hatton funeral Home in Wharton. Mr. Pettit died July 17, 2003 at Gulf Coast Medical Center.

Lloyd Wayne Terrell

Lloyd Wayne Terrell, 67, of Boling, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003 in a Wharton hospital following a sudden illness. He was born on April 21, 1936 in Muldoon, Texas, the son of the late Only Terrell and Rebecca Meneley Terrell.

Mr. Terrell had been a resident of Boling since 1958 and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Boling. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for 47 years with Soloco L.L.C. in Bay City. He married Lucille E. Harrison on May 23, 1958 in Lyford, Texas. His favorite past time was gardening and growing tomatoes. A sister, Frances Beck, and two brothers, J.C. Terrell and Bobby Ray Terrell, preceded Mr. Terrell in death.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 18, at the Chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with the Rev. Darlene Perez and the Rev. Skip Holman officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Terrell of Boling; daughters and son-in-law, Peggy Terrell of Boling and Lori and Jack Gibbs of Waller; sister, Lorene Hunger of La Grange and grandchildren Mindy Terrell and Noah Gibbs.
Pallbearers were Jack Gibbs, Billy Beck, Michael Terrell, Andy Gibbs, Johnnie Byrd, Dwayne Byrd, Bob Blair and Walde Schiurring.
Honorary pallbearers were Noah Gibbs, Lee Rogers, Larry Taylor, Joe Perez, Rudy Hunger and Douglas Beck.

Charles Ervin White

Charles Ervin White, 59, of Wharton, died Monday, July 14, 2003 in a local hospital. Following cremation, memorial services were held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, at the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. A. J. Jones officiating. Private graveside services followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

He was born on March 12, 1944, in Cameron, the son of the late Charlie White and Erva Lee Klimple White. Mr. White was a life long resident of Wharton and Assembly of God by faith. He was employed as a truck driver for 30 years until his retirement. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of Viet Nam. He married Kathleen Daugherty on March 18, 1989 in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen White of Wharton; daughters, Dawn White of Willis and Brandi White of Houston; stepdaughter, Connie Bernard of Wharton; sons, Frank White of Wharton and Jason White of Austin; stepson, Chad Bernard of Wharton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanette and Robert Nicholson of Hallettsville, Brenda and Donnie Guess of Boling, Sherrie and Woodie Townsend of Wharton; brother, John Thomas and Linda White of Wharton; and seven grandchildren.

Elton Cox

Memorial services for Elton E. Cox, 71, of Canyon, were held Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Canyon with Dr. Don McDonald officiating. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. Thursday at Brookside Memorial Park with Rev. Jim Butler officiating.

Mr. Cox died Sept. 27, 2003, in Amarillo. He was born on a farm in Magnet and spent his youth in Wharton. In 1950 he graduated from Wharton High School after lettering in tennis, baseball and four years in basketball. Mr. Cox attended Wharton County Junior College on a basketball scholarship and was a member of the National Junior College Championship basketball team. He continued his education at the University of Texas in Austin where he earned both bachelor of business administration and Doctor of Jurisprudence degrees. Mr. Cox married Diana Hester in Houston in 1956. After serving in the U.S.. Army at Fort Chaffee, Ark., he took a position at West Texas State College, School of Business in Canyon. He has been a practicing attorney in Canyon since 1960. Mr. Cox opened his first law office with George Dowlen. Subsequently, he became a partner with A. W. Lair and Dale Williams. His last years of practice were spent with Gene McGlasson after forming the firm of McGlasson and Cox. He served as Canyon city attorney, Randall County Judge and legal counsel for the Canyon Independent School District and the former First National Bank of Canyon. Mr. Cox was a member of the Amarillo Bar Association. He coached in Kiwanis girls softball and boys Little League baseball. Mr. Cox was Kiwanis president and was honored as Kiwanian of the Year. A member of the First Presbyterian Church in Canyon, he served as deacon and elder. He presently was on the board of directors of the Wells Fargo Bank in Canyon. The Canyon branch of the National Secretaries Association International selected him as Boss of the Year, and West Texas A&M business students honored him as favorite professor.

Survivors include wife Diana Cox of Canyon; daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Scott Ferguson of Austin; and three grandchildren.
