Daniel Herzik

Funeral services for Daniel A. Herzik, 57, of Rosenberg, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Rosenberg with Rev. Dan Warden officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Rosenberg. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg with a rosary beginning at 7 p.m.

Mr. Herzik died June 13, 2004, in Rosenberg. He was born April 23, 1947, in Richmond to the late Ivan and Lorraine A. Pustejovsky Herzik.

Survivors include sons, Nolan Herzik and Jason Herzik, both of Rosenberg; daughter, Kristin Herzik of Rosenberg; sisters and brothers-in-law, Patricia Graham of Hungerford, Mary Ann Herzik of Houston; Debbie and Wesley Sopchak of Richmond and Brenda and Daryl Schmidt of Rosenberg; brothers, Darrell Herzik and Ivan Herzik Jr., both of Rosenberg; and many nieces and nephews.

Cecilia Kucera

Cecilia Brenk Kucera, age 86 of Boling, passed away Monday, June 14, 2004, in Bay City. She was born on April 12, 1918, in Woodburn, Ore., the daughter of the late Frank Brenk Sr. and Mary Catheryn Duyka Brenk.

Mrs. Kucera was a 57-year resident of the Boling area and a former resident of the Jones Creek area and Wharton. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boling. Mrs. Kucera married Vit August Kucera on Nov. 7, 1938, in Wharton. He preceded her in death on April 7, 1982. Mrs. Kucera was a homemaker, who enjoyed making kolaches and growing flowers and sweet peas in her garden.
Funeral mass services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Ewv. Joe Vrana officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, at Wharton Funeral Home. Friends may call for visitation from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. today, Wednesday, June 16, at Wharton Funeral Home.

Survivors include her sons, David P. Kucera and wife, Suzanne, of Pledger, Ronnie Kucera and wife, Sherry, of Boling and Jerry Kucera and wife, Stephanie, of Wharton; sister, Rose Cervenka of Rosenberg; brothers, Victor Brenk of Glen Flora and Theodore Brenk of Rosenberg. Six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Frances Baca, Agnes Socha, Marie Boyd and Josephine Pavlovsky; and by brothers, Frank, Tony, Fred and Bennie Brenk.

Pallbearers are Mark Koudela, Clint Hatchett, Shane Kucera, Keith Kucera, David Kucera and Jason Kucera.

If desiring, memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 2011 Briar Lane, Wharton, TX 77488; or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 11251 Northwest Freeway, Suite 300, Houston, TX 77092.

Dorothy Martin

Funeral services for Dorothy York Martin, 75, of El Campo, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, at First Baptist Church in El Campo. Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation began at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo.
Mrs. Martin died June 13, 2004. She was born Oct. 21, 1928, in Louise to the late Walter Lorenzo and Glenn Ella Appling Roome.

She was a homemaker and first married Robert Charles York, who preceded her in death, and later married Weldon Martin. Mrs. Martin was a past member of the Kiwanis Club.

Survivors include husband, Weldon Martin of El Campo; daughters, Sandra Moore of Bryan, Brenda Biesel of Eagle Lake, Glenda Legler of Wharton and Melinda Labay of El Campo; step-daughter, Linda Alderson of Louise; sons, Robert York of El Campo, Bill York of Boling, Timothy Brion York of El Campo and Walter William York II of El Campo; sister, Ruth Ella Yackel of Louise; brother, Walter Cecil Roome of Bartlett; 23 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, her parents and sister, Evelyn Moser.

Pallbearers are Matthew Scott Moore, Robby Biesel, Jay Legler, Brent Labay, Brandon Labay and Brion Labay.

Honorary pallbearers are Robert Charles York, Adam Thomas York, Dylan Robert York, Dustin York and Arturo Perez.

If desiring, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Kenneth McCain

Kenneth Ray McCain Sr., age 65, of East Bernard, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in a Richmond hospital. He was born on June 2, 1939, in East Bernard, the son of the late Willie Lee and Ione Singer McCain.

Mr. McCain married Deloris Jean Taylor on Feb. 5, 1961, in Seguin. After serving four years in the U.S. Air Force he returned to East Bernard. Prior to his death he worked as a construction supervisor for Brazos River Construction in Richmond. He was a member of First Baptist Church of East Bernard and a former commissioner of East Bernard Little League. Mr. McCain was an avid drag racer and Dallas Cowboy fan who loved dogs, fishing and playing with his grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2004, at First Baptist Church of East Bernard with Rev. Duane Mayberry officiating. Interment followed in the East Bernard Methodist Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Deloris McCain of East Bernard; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Fate Breedlove Jr. of East Bernard and Michelle Ann and Jeff Gajewsky of East Bernard; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Ray McCain Jr. and wife, Karen, of East Bernard; grandchildren, Ashley Breedlove, Justin Breedlove, Scarlett McCain, Haley Gajewsky and Hannah Gajewsky.

Pallbearers were Ronnie McCain, Tim McCain, Robert McCain, Dale McCain, Michael McCain and David Morris.

Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Geralynn Gray

Following cremation, memorial services for Geralynn Fitzgerald “Jerry” Gray, 72, of Wharton, will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with Rev. Carl Shannon officiating.

Mrs. Gray died June 24, 2004, in the Clear Lake Regional Hospital in Webster. She was born on Oct. 22, 1931, in Wharton, the daughter of the late Jim C. Locke and Geraldine Fitzgerald Locke.

She was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Mrs. Gray was a graduate of Wharton High School and attended Blinn Junior College and Rice University. She married Billy Douglas Gray on Jan. 27, 1951, in Wharton. He preceded her in death on March 9, 1993. Mrs. Gray was employed as an administrative assistant at Wharton County Junior College for 12 years until her retirement in 1994. She was also a professional Pekingese dog breeder. She was a member of the Pekingese Club of America, Pekingese Club of Texas and the Pekingese Club of Houston. Mrs. Gray was also a champion marksman.

Survivors include her daughters, Dr. Kathy Palma and husband, Dr. Doug Hepler of McLeansville, N.C., and Toy Horsfall and husband, Robert Dillard of Alvin; brother, Beau James of New York, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Dennis Jankowiak

Funeral Services for Dennis Alfred Jankowiak, 68, of Brazoria, were held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard, with Rev. Don Ruppert officiating. Burial was in Czech National Cemetery in East Bernard.

Mr. Jankowiak died June 23, 2004, in San Antonio. He was born in East Bernard to the late Mike and Augusta Brandl Jankowiak.

He worked as a machinist in the oil industry. Mr. Jankowiak was of Catholic faith, served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include daughter Deneen Kennedy and husband Brent of Hockley; sons, Rodney Jankowiak and wife Jacque of Cypress and Shawn Jankowiak and wife Dawn of Magnolia; brother, Mike Jankowiak, Jr. and wife Pat of Brazoria; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Wallace Jankowiak.

Harry Norrell

Harry Lee Norrell, age 76, of Wharton, died Monday, June 28, 2004, in Wharton following an extended illness. Mr. Norrell was born on March 8, 1928 in Gulf, the son of the late John Wyot Norrell and Mattie Eugenia Spurrier Norrell.

Mr. Norrell moved to Newgulf at the age of six weeks and was a resident of Newgulf until joining the Navy at the age of 17. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy two years later and went to work for Southern Pacific Railroad for two years. He met and later married Rebecca Ruth Brown on Jan. 1, 1950, in Newgulf. Mr. Norrell was a 32-year employee of Texas Gulf Inc., having worked as a warehouse clerk until his retirement in 1983. He also was a high school football official for many years and was a member of the SFOA Conference. He was a member of the Boling United Methodist Church. Mr. Norrell was a member of the Newgulf Athletic Club since 1951 and with his wife, founded the Newgulf Divot Diggers in 1960. He loved teaching and assisted in coaching various Boling Golf Teams. He was proud of the 17 consecutive district titles and numerous trips to the regional and state golf tournaments. He was a former member of the Boling Athletic Booster Club. Mr. Norrell was an avid supporter of the Wharton County Sheriff’s Association and was named its Citizen of the Year in 1994. He loved to attend his grandchildrens’ various sporting events. His many passions were golfing, fishing, floundering and gardening. Mr. Norrell was well known for his sense of humor, which will be sorely missed.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Pauline Harvey officiating and Rev. Paul Thomasson assisting. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Norrell of Wharton; daughter, Ruth Ann Norrell of Wharton; sons, Harry Glenn Norrell and wife, Debbie, of Wharton and Leslie Frank Norrell and wife, Delisa, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandchildren, Stephen Dowell, Jenna Norrell, Jonathan Norrell, Korenna Dowell, Jessica Norrell, Kaitlyn Norrell, Vail Norrell and Grant Norrell and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters, Beatrice Howell and Minnie Samohyl and by brothers, John, Bill, Robert, Roy and Ferrell Norrell and by his granddaughter, Brooke Norrell.

Pallbearers were Frank Northcutt, Jerry Long, Burlis Bickham, Daniel Lopez, Jess Howell, Leslie Samohyl, Roy Norrell and Glenn Seay.

Honorary pallbearers were Mike Norrell, Terry Williams, Jimmy Lahodny, Jonathan Norrell, Stephen Dowell, John Norrell, Brent Barrett, Roger Gilcrease and all former Divot Diggers.

If desiring, memorials may be made to a charity of personal choice.

Charles Pumphrey

Charles Milton Pumphrey Sr., age 95, of Boling, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, in Wharton. He was born on Sept. 3, 1908, in Waxahachie, the son of the late Walter Andrew Pumphrey and Beulah Hart Pumphrey.

Mr. Pumphrey was a graduate of Denison High School in Denison. He married Lena Rivers McCraray on Aug. 10, 1930, in Denison. She preceded him in death on Sept. 19, 1996. He moved to Boling in 1932 and worked for Duvall Sulphur Company and later founded Producers Well Service as an oil well servicing contractor. Mr. Pumphrey was a former member of the Wharton Masonic Lodge and the Boling Lions Club. He had a deep and abiding interest in his fellow employees and was Methodist by faith.

Masonic graveside services and interment will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, July 3, 2004, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include son, Walter Pumphrey and wife, Martha, of Rosenberg; daughter-in-law, Rose Marie Pumphrey of Lane City; grandchildren, Walt Pumphrey and wife, Joy, Cathy Popp, Debbie, Valerie and Lena; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his son, C.M. “Son” Pumphrey Jr.; two sisters and a brother.

Pallbearers will be his great-grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be James Sterling, Billy Beck, Al Duderstadt and numerous Boling friends.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

L.V. Brooks

Funeral services for L.V. Brooks, 63, of Edna, were held Monday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Roberts officiating. Burial followed in Washington Cemetery.

Mr. Brooks died June 16, 2004, in Edna. He was born Aug. 17, 1940, in Wharton to the late Kenneth and Bernice Prince Sayles Brooks.

He worked as a carpenter and was Baptist by faith.

Survivors include daughter, Regina Brooks of Edna; sons, Jonathan Brooks of Austin, Gregory Brooks of Laredo and Leonard Brooks of Garland; sisters, Celesteen Mike of Victoria, Creola Barnes of Edna, Karlene Barnes and Ruthie Sayles, both of California; brothers, Kenneth Brooks of Edna, Robert James Brooks of Victoria, Ernest Brooks of Omaha, Neb., Dimple Lee Sayles of California, Victor Sayles of Houston and Dudley Sayles of San Antonio; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Emily Copeland

Emily “Millie” Frances Copeland, age 75, of Wharton, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton following an extended illness. She was born on April 14, 1929, the daughter of the late John and Frances Kliss Luchak.

Mrs. Copeland married James Olin Copeland on Oct. 17, 1946, in Wharton. He preceded her in death on Nov. 12, 2000. She was a caring baby-sitter for many years. She was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of the First Baptist Church, where she was the former nursery director. Mrs. Copeland was a volunteer for the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for many years. She was a former member of the Home Demonstration Club and Wharton High School Band Boosters.

She filled the lives of those she touched with laughter and joy. She never met a stranger and was loved by everyone that ever met her. Her closest friends say, she never disliked anyone and accepted them as her equal.

Mrs. Copeland reared her children, and the many children she cared for in her lifetime, to love and respect others; always reaching out to those in need. Her compassion was unending. She brought happiness to people with her infectious laugh and bright smile. Mrs. Copeland had a passion for family and was the life of the party. She will be dearly missed by those whose lives she has been a part of.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Mack Mathis officiating and Rev. Bill Stroup and Mickey Reynolds assisting. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Susan and John Raines of Rowlett; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Toni Kay Copeland of Wharton, Steve and Debbie Copeland of Willis and Bill and Janna Copeland of Boling; sisters, Martha Sophia of Lake Jackson, Johnnie Jean LaComb of Wharton, Betty Kahanek of Houston, Patricia Sterry of Bay City and Pinky Ainsworth of Holiday Lakes; brother, Bobby Luchak of Channelview; grandchildren, Melissa Copeland James, Jason Copeland, John David Copeland, Jeremy Copeland, Timmy Copeland, Emily Raines, Chris Raines, Kelsey Copeland, Jacob Copeland and Kimberly Wake and great-grandchildren, Amanda James, Ryan James, Kade Copeland, Tyler Copeland, Morgan Copeland, Brett Copeland, Steven Copeland and Jacklyn Ann Wake.

She was preceded in death by her son, James Copeland Jr.; sister, Mary Burr; brother, Willie Luchak; and grandson, James Riley Raines.

Pallbearers were Jason Copeland, John David Copeland, Jeremy Copeland, Timmy Copeland, Chris Raines, Jacob Copeland, Ross Arth and Gale Burr.

Honorary pallbearers were Melissa Copeland James, Emily Raines and Kelsey Copeland.
