Margaret McMullen

Graveside services for Margaret Ellen Rhea McMullen, 58, of San Antonio, were held at 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, in Wharton City Cemetery with Paul Jones officiating.

Mrs. McMullen died Nov. 19, 2004, at her residence in San Antonio following an extended illness. She was born Nov. 4, 1946, in Paris, the daughter of the late Floyd R. Rhea and Jewel Gorden Rhea.

She was a graduate of Wharton High School, Wharton County Junior College and attended Sam Houston State University. Mrs. McMullen was a former resident of Wharton and had lived in San Antonio for the last 30 years. She was a former member of Abell Street Church of Christ.

Survivors include sisters, Gayle Rhea Barrett of Madisonville, Judy Rhea Barbour of Bandera and Mary Ann Rhea of Richmond; numerous nieces and nephews.

If desiring, memorials may be made to a charity of personal choice.

Lambert Stavena

Lambert Peter Stavena Sr., age 83, of Wharton, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, in Wharton. He was born on Aug. 12, 1921, in Fayette County, the son of the late Frank and Mary Novosad Stavena.

Mr. Stavena married Joy Adell Koonce on Nov. 14, 1964, in Houston. She preceded him in death on April 24, 1989. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army Air Corps. Mr. Stavena was a longtime employee of Brown & Root and worked as a carpenter prior to retiring in 1987. He was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. John Kunnathukuzhy officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provide by American Legion Post No. 87. A rosary and wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Wharton Funeral Home with Mr. Glenn Erdelt and Rev. John Kunnathukuzhy officiating.

Survivors include daughter, Debra Buzek of Clute; son and daughter-in-law, Lambert Stavena Jr. and wife, Vanessa, of Wharton; brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Nelga Stavena of Wharton; grandchildren, Patricia Clifton and husband, Steve, Joy Hayes and husband, Jason, Connor Stavena, Taylor Stavena, and Evan Stavena; great-grandchildren, Justin, Bailey, Darrin, Ethan and Mykala; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Stavena.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Stavena, Mike Dean, Steve Clifton, Jason Stavena, Connor Stavena and Taylor Stavena.
If desiring, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 204 2nd Street, Wharton, TX 77488.

Helen Stafford

Helen Wood Stafford, age 95, of Wharton,, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004, in Fort Worth. She was born on March 27, 1909, in Bay City, the daughter of the late Ernest Edward Wood and Susie Rogers Wood.

Mrs. Stafford graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in Bay City and earned a bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Texas and an education degree from the University of Houston. She married William Maner Stafford on Dec. 31, 1936, in Rosharon, and they lived in the Harrison Plantation House in Burr prior to moving to Wharton in 1951. He preceded her in death on March 24, 1986. Mrs. Stafford worked as a history teacher at Wharton Junior High School from 1958 until retiring in 1966. She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, the Wharton County Historical Museum and the Chamber of Commerce. She was a former Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Wharton, Girl Scout leader and a volunteer for SHARE and the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Stafford was a charter member of the Friends of Wharton County Library, past president of the Wharton Band Parents, treasurer for the Wharton Book Review Club and secretary of the Philomathians. She was also the last original member of the Tuesday Bridge Club.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with Rev. Lance Ousley officiating. Interment will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Juliasue and Grover Swift of Fort Worth; son and daughter-in-law, Ernest and Joan Stafford of San Antonio; daughter-in-law, Betty Stafford of Manderville, La.; grandchildren, Grover Swift III and wife, Jill, Maner Stafford Swift, Kris Stafford and wife, Shannon, William Maner “Trey” Stafford III, Jill Stafford and Leanne Stafford and great-grandchildren, Kenna Swift and Kael Stafford. She was preceded in death by her son, William Maner Stafford Jr. in 1996.

Pallbearers will be Harrison Stafford, Burr Stafford, Gerard Stafford, Kris Stafford, Grover Swift III, William Maner “Trey” Stafford III, Jeffrey Blair and Randy Blair.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Harrison Stafford, Sr., Maner Stafford Swift, Jill Stafford, Shannon Stafford, Leanne Stafford, William Cline Sr., Grover Swift Jr., Jill Swift, Betty Stafford, Vicki Cook, Nancy Robinson, Joyce Wood, Dr. H.M. Northington, Larry Sitka and David Foehner.

Other Honorary Pallbearers will be all of her many close friends and neighbors.

Randy Kirby

Funeral services for Randy Mel Kirby, 48, of El Campo, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Matthews Funeral Home. Burial will follow in El Campo Community Cemetery.

Mr. Kirby died at his residence. He was born Sept. 25, 1956, in El Campo to Loretta Long and the late Jesse Kirby Jr.

He worked as a clerk.

Survivors include mother, Loretta Degree; and sister, Joy Robertson.

A.T. Leveridge

Funeral services for Aubrey Thomas “A.T.” Leveridge Jr., attorney and rancher from East Bernard, are pending with Garmany & Carden Funeral Directors, Inc. in Rosenberg.

Mr. Leveridge died Dec. 2, 2004, in a San Antonio hospital.

Ada Buff

Lena Olena “Lena” Buff of Wharton died Nov. 29, 2004, at the age of 93. She was born Dec. 4, 1910, to Joseph and Ollie Helmer in Dime Box.

Mrs. Buff married Willard Buff on Jan. 4, 1930, and moved to the Cockburn Ranch on the Colorado River in Wharton County. There, they raised their three children Bobby Lee, Joyce Marie and Willard Jr.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was affectionately known as “GaGa” (Gaw-Gaw) to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all of their many friends. Mrs. Buff is survived by son and daughter-in-law Bobby and Dorla Buff of Wharton; son and daughter-in-law Willard Jr. and Lorene of Spring; and daughter and son-in-law Joyce and David Culver of Paris, Ill. Lena leaves behind four grandchildren, Bobby Lee Buff Jr. of Hondo, Karen Lynn Buff-Garza of Wharton, Kimmelyn Jean Buff of The Woodlands, and Willard Troy Buff of Spring; and six great-grandchildren, Christopher Garza, Travis Garza, Kelsi Buff, Zachary Buff, Blaine Isbell and Cole Isbell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard on Nov. 10, 1971, and grandson Michael Dean Buff on Dec. 18, 1982. She was also preceded in death by her great-great granddaughter, Cambri Grace Garza, on Nov. 11, 2004. Mrs. Buff was the last surviving sister of eight children.

Services for Mrs. Buff were held Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at Wharton Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were her grandsons and great-grandsons Bobby Buff Jr., Troy Buff, Christopher Garza, Travis Garza, Zachary Buff and family friend Alton Clark.

Regina Genzer

Regina Diane Genzer, age 28, of Wharton, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, in an automobile accident. She was born on March 30, 1976, in Richmond, the daughter of Rudolph John and Veronica Cecilia Rosniak Prihoda Jr.
Mrs. Genzer had been a resident of Wharton since 1998 and was a former resident of Damon. She graduated from Needville High School in 1994. Mrs. Genzer was employed as a teacher’s aide with the Boling Independent School District. She married William Curtis Genzer on June 13, 1998, in Needville. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton and was a former instructor with the CCD at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Needville. Mrs. Genzer was preceded in death by grandparents, Martha Rosniak, Louis Rosniak, Rudolph Prihoda Sr.; aunt, Barbara Cieslewicz; godfather, Robert Stratman Jr.; grandparents-in-law, Curtis Lunday and Charles Boyd.
A rosary was recited at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. A funeral mass was held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. James Ramsey and Rev. David Zapalac officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Genzer, daughter, Elizabeth Marie Genzer, and son, William Rudolph Genzer, all of Wharton; parents, Rudolph and Veronica Prihoda, sister, Vanessa Lynn Prihoda, brothers, Rudolph John Prihoda III, and Reece Alan Prihoda, grandmother, Sophie Prihoda, all of Damon; father and mother-in-law, Bill and Suzette Genzer of Boling; great-grandparents-in-law, William A. and Sarah Ann Genzer of Wharton; great grandmother-in-law, Bernice Boyd of Austin; sister-in-law, Monica Joy Jordan of Rosenberg.

Pallbearers were Michael Bosch, William Brod, Todd Helmcamp, Thomas Stratmon, Eric Cieslewicz, Jimmy Lee Prihoda and Zachary Prihoda.

Honorary pallbearers were Dale and Pat Potter, Pete and Beth Kucera, Dennis Imhoff, Clay Lundy and Brian Riendeau.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to The William & Elizabeth Genzer Scholarship Fund, c/o NewFirst National Bank, 101 E. Milam, Wharton, TX 77488.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton.

Martin Hernandez

Martin Z. Hernandez, age 58, of Boling, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, in a Wharton hospital following a sudden illness. He was born on Nov. 23, 1946, in La Presa, Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico, the son of Refugio Hernandez and Soledad Zamora Hernandez.

Mr. Hernandez had been a resident of Boling since 1977 and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ in Boling. He married Petra Arriaga in December of 1981 in Angleton. He worked as a welder and mechanic for Sterling Vacuum Service for the past four years. Mr. Hernandez was preceded in death by his father and a grandson, Jaime Hernandez Jr. He enjoyed rebuilding cars and trucks.

A prayer service was held Friday evening at the Chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at the Chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Bobby Charles officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Petra Hernandez of Boling, daughters and sons-in-law, Amanda Hernandez and Monica and Walter Pospisil, all of Boling; Theresa and Francisco Ramos of Tribune, Kan., and Veronica Hernandez of Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico; sons and daughters-in-law, Alex and Irene Arriaga, of Boling, James and Kristin Hernandez of San Diego, Calif., Juan and Mary Hernandez of Atlanta, Ga., Martin and Juanita Hernandez Jr. of Lakewood, Fla., Jaime and Norma Hernandez of Ft. Worth, Macario and Jerri Alaniz of Brazoria and Christopher and Eva Alaniz of Lake Jackson; mother, Soledad Zamora Hernandez of Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico; sisters, Sofia Hernandez of Stockton, Calif., Luz Hernandez, Amalia Hernandez and Guadalupe Hernandez, all of Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico; brothers, Raul Hernandez and Elias Hernandez both of Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico, Refugio Hernandez of Stockton, Calif., Jesus Hernandez of Palacios, Carmen Hernandez and Javier Hernandez, both of Atlanta, Ga.; 22 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Mena, Christopher Alaniz, Macario Alaniz, Tony Arriaga, Carmen Hernandez, Martin Hernandez, Jaime Hernandez, Javier Hernandez, Juan Hernandez and Raymond Mena Jr.

Honorary Pallbearers are all employees of Sterling Vacuum Service and his grandchildren.

Funeral services are under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

George Collins

Funeral services for George Augusterie Collins Sr., 66, of Kendleton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Baptist Church with Rev. P.R. Mayfield Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Powell Point Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the church. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Collins died Nov. 28, 2004, at Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital in Richmond. He was born Aug. 24, 1938, in Kendleton to Andrew Charles and Annie Lee Johnson Collins Sr.

Survivors include wife, Dorothy Gean Williams Collins of Kendleton; sons, Harold Terrance Wayne and George Jr.; daughters, Rosalind, Carrie, Tarmeka, Trineshea, Syetta, La Nita, Sherry and Gloria; brother, Andrew Collins Jr.; sisters, Ester Lee, Neotha Marie, Annie Lee, Lula B. and Sarah; 34 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Lloyd Fenix

Funeral services for Lloyd M. Fenix, 57, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. C. Spradley officiating. Burial will follow in Boones Bend Cemetery in Hungerford. A wake service will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
Mr. Fenix died Nov. 28, 2004.

Ivory Mitchell

Funeral services for Ivory Lee Mitchell Jr., 59, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mother Zion Baptist Church with Rev. C.L. Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in New Prosperity Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Thursday.

Mr. Mitchell died Nov. 28, 2004, at Wharton Manor Nursing Home. He was born Aug. 1, 1945, in Wharton to Ivory Lee and Adlena Bryant Mitchell Sr.

Survivors include son, Rodrick Paul of Needville; daughters, Shelia Mitchell and Wanda Anderson, both of Wharton; and three grandchildren.

Freddy Carlton

Funeral services for Freddy “Coach” Wayne Carlton, 61, of Texas City, were held Sunday at Baypoint Church with Bobby Gass officiating.

Mr. Carlton died Nov. 25, 2004. He was born Feb. 5, 1943, in Corpus Christi. He was a baseball coach in Wharton from 1971 until 1973 and took the Tigers to the state championship tournament.

Survivors include wife of 40 years, Pattie Smith Carlton; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Rudy Morin of Santa Fe; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Stacey Carlton of Lake Jackson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Cran and Ivon Carlton of Bryan and Lonnie and Betty Carlton of Oklahoma City, Okla. and; sister, Sue Warren of Corpus Christi; sister-in-law, Inez Carlton of Odessa; two granddaughters and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jewel and Clyde Carlton, and brother, Ken Carlton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial fund at any Southwest Bank or sign up to become an organ donor.

Cambri Garza

Funeral services for Cambri Grace Garza, infant daughter of Travis and Kelly Garza of Wharton, were held Nov. 14 at Wharton Funeral Home. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Cambri was born Oct. 14, 2004, and died Nov. 11, 2004.

She is survived by her parents; grandmothers, Margaret Crowson of Hungerford and Karen Garza of Wharton; grandfather, Nick Garza of Wharton; great-grandparents, aunts and uncles, great-aunts and uncles, and numerous cousins. Cambri was preceded in death by her grandfather, Tom Crowson, of Houston.
