Funeral services for Regina Diane Genzer, 28, of Wharton, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call for visitation after 5 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church and a rosary will follow at 7 p.m. at the church.

Mrs. Genzer died November 28, 2004, in an automobile accident.

Gladys Kurtz

Gladys Victoria Kurtz died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004. She was born on May 29, 1920, in Wharton, the daughter of the late Ed and Lilly Janssen Brandt.

Mrs. Kurtz married Leroy B. Kurtz on Dec. 24, 1941, in Wharton. She was a wife, mother and homemaker for the last 62 years. They lived in Houston for 41 years, returning to Wharton in 1982. Mrs. Kurtz was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy on April 22, 2004. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters.

Our mama was a cherished member of her entire family. She always greeted you with a smile, a kiss and a hug. Her strength came from her bond and personal contact with her family and friends. Her grand and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy B. Kurtz; grandsons, Aaron Frank Kurtz and Jeffrey Lee Graves and brothers, Walter Brandt, Alfred Brandt and Ed Brandt.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Carol Lee Campbell and husband, Dennis of Houston, and Marie Vincent and husband, Rick of Friendswood; son and daughter-in-law, Frank Allen Kurtz and wife, Becky of Pearland; sister, Doris Giesalhart of Poth; brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Ida Brandt of Houston; brother-in-law, Lloyd Kurtz of Wharton; sister-in-law and dear friend, Josephine Brandt of El Campo; sister-in-law, Muriel Brandt of Illinois; grandchildren, Donna Lott and husband, Billy, Kim Campbell, Josh Graves and wife, Amy, Julia Vincent, Andy Smith, Amy Kurtz and Cristy Lujan and husband, Jorge; great-grandchildren, Brian Lott, Ashley Lott, Karsen Graves, Carli Graves and Jorge Lujan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. Interment will follow in the Wharton City Cemetery. A rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at Wharton Funeral Home. Friends may call for visitation from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be Sonny Kurtz, Roy Kurtz, James Bruce, Wayne Brandt, Glenn Brandt, Ray Kacer, Bert Lee Hosea and Robert Newlin.

Honorary pallbearers are James Turner, Marcus Melnar, Sonny Giesalhart, Larry Brandt and Bill Hudgins.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home, 515 Boling Highway, Wharton, TX 77488.

Martin Hernandez

Funeral services for Martin Hernandez, 58, of Boling are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Hernandez died Nov. 29, 2004, in a Wharton hospital after a sudden illness.

Willard White

Funeral services for Willard White, 84, of Wharton, were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary was recited Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. White died Nov. 25, 2004, at his residence following a brief illness. He was born March 17, 1920, in East Bernard, the son of the late Tom White and Gladys Odom White.

He had been a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford. Mr. White was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. He was also a member of the VFW. Mr. White married Isabel Leona Stolle and she preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 2004. He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Teresa Lofton and Loretta Mata, and one sister and two brothers.

Survivors include step-sons, Laddie Prihoda of Wimberly and Eddie Prihoda of Lake Jackson; brothers, Billy Joe White of Splendora, Harold White and Ruben White, both of Wharton, and Danny White of El Campo; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to St. John’s Catholic Church, P.O. Box 121, Hungerford, TX 77448; or the American Cancer Society, 204 2nd Street, Wharton, TX 77488.

Willie Ray

Funeral services for Willie Jean Ray, 58, of Wharton, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. B.B. Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Old Bethlehem Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. today, Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. today.

Mrs. Ray died Jan. 12, 2005, in Kindred Hospital in Houston. She was born Jan. 8, 1947, in Wharton to Eugene and Mary Elizabeth Ellis Schooler.

Survivors include brothers, Charles Schooler and Richard Schooler, both of Wharton, and Billie Schooler Sr. of Rosenberg; and sister, Rita Ford of Wharton.

Antonia Montelongo

Antonia Horta Montelongo, age 59 of Wharton died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, in Avalon Nursing Home following an extended illness. She was born on June 8, 1945, in Wharton the daughter of the late Fidencio Horta and Herlinda Sosa Horta.

Mrs. Montelongo had been a resident of Wharton for the past five years and was a former longtime resident of Boling. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boling. Mrs. Montelongo was preceded in death by her first husband, Benito Bermudes Sr.; two daughters, Elida Bermudes and Beatrice Bermudes; a brother, Rudolph Horta Sr.; and three sisters, Olivia Ortiz, Hope Campos and Mary Horta.

A rosary was recited Thursday evening, Jan. 13, 2005, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boling with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Berta and Jesus Guerrero of Wharton and Belle and Francisco Hernandez of Boling; son and daughter-in-law, Benito and Cynthia Bermudes Jr. of Wharton; sisters, Delores Lopez, Rosie Machuca and Mary Jane Hill, all of Boling, and Lucy Quintanilla of Palacios; brothers, Robert Horta and Joe Horta, both of Boling, and Rudy Horta of Wharton. Eleven Grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Pallbearers were Francisco Hernandez, Jesus Guerrero, Gary Hill, Mark Raymond, Johnny Castro and Joe Pena.

Honorary Pallbearers were Jose H. Hernandez, Juan B. Hernandez, Jerome A. Garcia and Ceasar Allen Pina Jr.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Odyssey Hospice, 2636 South Loop West, Suite 210, Houston, TX 77054.

Reginald Weaver

Funeral services for David Reginald “Reggie” Weaver 52, of Wharton, were Saturday, at Peace Tabernacle Church in Wharton with Rev. Charles Fisher officiating. Burial follow in Wharton City Cemetery.

Mr. Weaver died Jan. 4, 2005 in Houston. He was born Aug. 10, 1952, in Houston.
He was in the vending business and was the owner of Kip’s Construction. Mr. Weaver graduated from Powell Point High School in Kendleton. In 1970 he attended Wharton County Junior College and Texas A&I in Kingsville on a basketball scholarship. His mother, Frances Boone Weaver, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife Valery Weaver of Wharton; sons; Kip Weaver of Pflugerville and Brandon Ford of Wharton; daughter, Kinaye Jade Weaver of Wharton; father, Aaron Weaver of Wharton; sisters, Michelle Weaver and Karen Randle, both of Wharton, and Sabryna Childress of Sugar Land; brothers, Russell Weaver of Wharton and Richard Weaver of Bay City.

Elise Fraley

Graveside services for Elise L. Fraley, 86, of Houston, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Wharton City Cemetery.

Miss Fraley died Jan. 10, 2005, in a Houston hospital. She was born Dec. 24, 1918, in Wharton to Lester Fraley and Katie Belle Rush Fraley.

She attended Wharton schools until 1933, moving to Houston with her mother after the death of her father in an auto accident. Miss Fraley graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1937 and then trained in telemetry navigation and was employed as a telemeter operator for Lykes Steamship Company of Houston for many years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Houston. She cared for her mother until her death in 1975. Miss Fraley was also preceded in death by a number of cousins in the Wharton area.

Maurice Johnson

Funeral services for Rev. Maurice Johnson, 47, of Kendleton, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at St. James Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Eagle Lake Community Cemetery.

Rev. Johnson died Jan. 4, 2005, at Oak Bend Medical Center. He was born July 12, 1957, in Eagle Lake to Thelma Boykins Johnson and the late Alex Jack Johnson.

He was retired from the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Department.

Survivors include wife, Camille Turner Johnson; mother, Thelma Boykins Johnson; sons, Alexander Johnson, Cameron Johnson and Antrone Clark; brothers, Louis Barrow and Rev. Paul Barrow; and one grandchild.

Willie Sparks

Funeral services for Will Sparks Jr., 80, of Wharton, will be held at noon Tuesday at Mount Scilla Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Boone's Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Mr. Sparks died Jan. 5, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born July 22, 1924, in Wharton to Will and Clara Cockrell Sparks.

Survivors include wife, Celestine Brook Sparks; sons and daughters-in-law, Edward Jerome and Gretta Sparks of Los Angeles, Calif., Dale and Sharon Sparks of Houston, Craig and Gwen Sparks of Las Vegas, Nev., Roy Murry and Chris Bachiller, both of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Gail Armstrong, Joan and Joe Norris, all of Wharton, June Sparks, Jackie and Kim Viola of West Columbia and Judy and Floyd Aldridge of Houston; and many great and great-grandchildren.

Marjorie Zeidman

Longtime Wharton business and civic leader Marjorie Todes Franklin Zeidman, 87, was buried in Shearith Israel Cemetery on Thursday, Jan. 27. She died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005.

She was born on Dec. 7, 1917, in Galveston to Lew and Dorothy Littman Todes. She was the wife of the late Mervin Franklin and is survived by her husband, Morris Zeidman. She is also survived by her sons, Rabbi Wayne Franklin and his wife, Dr. Anne Presser Franklin, of Providence, RI; Gordon Franklin and his wife, Linda, of Sugar Land; her step-son, Fred Zeidman and his wife, Kay, of Houston; her brother, Lew Todes Jr., and his wife, Josephine, of Houston; her sisters-in-law Vivian Salinger of Wharton and Nancy Todes of Dallas. She was the sister of the late Dr. Jay L. Todes.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Debra Zalvan, David, Batya, Mark and Lauren Franklin; by her step-grandchildren, Leslie, Mark, Jay and Nancy Zeidman; and by her great-grandchildren, Emma and Jacob Franklin.

Marjorie was a co-founder with Mervin Franklin in January of 1947 of the Franklin Furniture Company in Wharton. She was active in Shearith Israel Congregation, Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, the Wharton Chapter of Hadassah, Wharton Lions Club, Wharton Historical Museum, Wharton Chamber of Commerce, and Wharton Garden Club.

Funeral services were Thursday, January 27, 2005, at Congregation Beth Yeshurun, in Houston at 11a.m. Burial was in Shearith Israel Cemetery in Wharton at 1 p.m.

Orrie Baade

Orrie Elizabeth Overton Baade, who died on Jan. 26, 2005, was born in Slaughter, La., on Nov. 22, 1912, the fourth of 12 children of Charles Pinckney and Blanche Coleman Overton.

Mrs. Baade lived in Austin with Berenice and Thomas Cox, her father’s sister and husband, from age seven until she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Texas in 1932. She taught in Independence and Nixon before moving to Newgulf in 1935, where she taught for four years before marrying. In 1954, she returned to the classroom and taught English in Boling and then Iago Junior High School for 18 years. Mrs. Baade was honored that many of her former students expressed their appreciation for her whenever they met.
Mrs. Baade married her husband of 56 years, Henry Howard Baade Sr., on June 14, 1939, and made her home for the next 65 years in the house near Iago which her husband had had build for them.
A proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mrs. Baade in 1998 received her 50-year pin. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the teachers’ honorary society, for more than 40 years. With her husband, she belonged to the Methodist denomination in the Iago Federated Church, where for many years she taught a Ladies Sunday School class.

Mrs. Baade is survived by daughter, Laura Lee Baade Gracy and husband, David B. Gracy II of Austin; son, Henry Howard Baade and wife, Mary Walker Roberson Baade of Washington, N.C.; grandchildren, Laura Annette Gracy Juba and husband, Joseph “Jay” Juba of Austin, Mary Beth Gracy Martinez and husband, Jason Martinez of Houston, Benjamin Baade Gracy of Boulder, Colo., Ann Catherine Baade Jouett and husband, the Reverend Jason Jouett of Houston, and Howard Roberson Baade and wife, Jennifer Christensen Baade of Galveston; great-grandchildren, Jacob Paul and Gracy Elizabeth Juba of Austin, Elizabeth Alice Martinez of Houston, Walker Harrison, Corbett Andrew, and Caroline Elizabeth Jouett of Houston, Corynn Elizabeth Baade of Galveston; three sisters, one brother, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Howard Baade Sr., on Jan. 13, 1996.

Services are being held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at the Iago Federated Church, with burial in the family plot in the Sealy City Cemetery in Sealy. The minister officiating is Mickey Reynolds.

Pallbearers are Howard Baade, Benjamin Gracy, Jason Jouett, Jacob Juba, Jay Juba and Jason Martinez.

The family requests that memorials be made to Iago Federated Church or a charity of personal choice.
