Martha Kendall

Martha Ann Kendall, born July 11, 1941, to Warner and Wilma Charlene Kendall in Dublin, died at her sister’s home in Frisco, Jan. 18, 2005, after courageously fighting cancer for 16 years.

She taught high school for 33 years; four years at Quanah and 29 years at Wharton. Ms. Kendall graduated from Tom S. Lubbock High School in Lubbock in 1959. She earned her BA in chemistry from Texas Tech University in 1964. Ms. Kendall received a master of education degree in curriculum and instruction-secondary education from University of Houston-Victoria 1986. She was certified to teach high school computer information system, mathematics and science composite. Ms. Kendall retired from teaching in 1997. She was member of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and the National Science Association.

She is survived by a brother, Roger Kendall and his wife, Kaye; sisters Edith Kendall, Epworth Glynn and her husband, Patrick, all of Frisco; nieces Kendall and Morgan Stewart of Frisco, Karissa Kendall of Kingsland and nephew Justin Kendall and his wife, Kyla, of Frisco.

Memorial Service in Wharton at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, First United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Martha Kendall Memorial Scholarship. Contributions should be made out to WHS — Martha Kendall Scholarship Fund and mailed to Wharton High School, Martha Kendall Scholarship, c/o Diana Joines, No. 1 Tiger Ave, Wharton, TX 77488; or call 532-6800.

William Taylor

William Taylor Jr. passed away Jan. 24, 2005, at the age of 95. Mr. Taylor was born in Kendleton, on April 14, 1909, to Virgil and William Taylor Sr.
He graduated from Powell Point High School. He later met and married Erma Simpson and to this union, one son was born.

He was a faithful member of Newman Chapel United Methodist Church and attended regularly until his death. As a member, he served in the following capacities: devoted choir member, member of the Board of Trustees, Building Fund treasurer, and board member of Paradise Garden Cemetery Association, of which he held the office of treasurer/care taker for many years. Mr. Williams later became an honorary member of the Board. He was also a member of the Roosevelt Masonic Lodge No. 8 of Kendleton.

Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, six brothers, and most recently, his wife, Erma, who passed away on Nov. 21, 2004. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, t, Charles and Hazel; four grandchildren, Gregory and wife Eva, William, Robert, Charlexia Taylor-McQueen and husband Willie; two great-grandchildren, Mallary and Vincent Taylor. He is also survived by a sister, Irene Price, and a brother, Oscar Taylor and wife Arlilia, one other sister-in-law and a brother-in-law, Dorothy Taylor and Earnest Hardison. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends to cherish his memory.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan . 27, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Newman Chapel United Methodist Church in Kendleton. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.

Algeretta Jackson

Funeral services for Algeretta Jackson of Kendleton, will be held at noon today, Saturday, at Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Booker officiating. Burial will follow at Powell Point Cemetery in Kendleton. Visitation will be held prior to the service.

Mrs. Jackson died Jan. 19, 2005, at her residence.

She was a homemaker and Baptist by faith. Mrs. Jackson was a member of Court of Calanthe Be On Time No. 401.
Survivors include Alice Mae Jackson, Juarene Jackson Callihan, Judge C. Jackson Jr. and Alfreda Jackson Johnson, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Martha Kendall

Graveside services for Martha Kendall, 63, former Wharton teacher, will be held today, Saturday, in Dublin. Memorial services in Wharton will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at First United Methodist Church.

Ms. Kendall died Jan. 18, 2005, in Dublin.

Aaron Phillips

Funeral services for Aaron J. Phillips, 77, of East Bernard, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Martin Luther King Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Mackey Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home.

Mr. Phillips died Jan. 19, 2005, at his residence. He was born Nov. 22, 1927, in Mackey to the late Archie Phillips and Mildred Young.

He was a retired truck driver.

Survivors include wife, Louise Byrd Phillips; daughters and son-in-law, Brenda and Bobby Growder, Darline Phillips and Gloria Phillips; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Madlin Walker, Aaron and Carrol Phillips, Alfred and Evelyn Phillips, Elonzo and Suress Phillips and Billie and Merlinda Phillips; and brother and sister-in-law, Elmo and Lee Ester Phillips; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Earnest Gibson

Funeral services for Earnest Gibson Sr., 82, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. M. Gray officiating. Burial will follow in Jake Ford Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Friday.

Mr. Gibson died Jan. 31, 2005, at his residence. He was born Sept. 8, 1922, in Victoria to Patrick and Ivory Johnson Gibson.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Freeman Gibson of Wharton, Lenwood and Geraldine Gibson of El Campo and Tim and Leatha Green of Wharton; daughter, Linda D. Gibson of Wharton; sisters, Versie Brown of San Antonio and Dora Crenshaw of Calif.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Eulalio Quijas

Eulalio “Larry” Quijas, age 61, of Wharton died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, in a Houston hospital following an extended illness. He was born on Dec. 14, 1943, in Newgulf, the son of Antonio Quijas and Trinidad Castillio Quijas.

Mr. Quijas had been a lifelong resident of Wharton County living in Newgulf and Wharton. He worked at Texasgulf Sulphur Company for more than 20 years until his retirement. Mr. Quijas most recently had worked at Maxim Egg Farm. He was a veteran of the Viet Nam Conflict and served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Quijas was a member of Bethel Church CLADIC in Wharton. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and landscaping. Mr. Quijas was preceded in death by his father and by two brothers, Daniel Quijas and Raymond Quijas.

A prayer service was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Joel Ramirez officiating. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Basilio Perez officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with military graveside honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton.

Survivors include his sons, Paul Anthony Longoria of Arcola and Larry Arthur Quijas of Georgia; mother, Trinidad Quijas of Wharton; sisters, Frances Gonzales of Beeville and Mary Elva Quijas of Boling; brothers, Abram “Buddy” Quijas of Tyler and Antonio “Rocky” Quijas of Wharton; grandchildren, Andrew Scott Longoria, Anthony Michael Longoria, Bailey Victoria Longoria and Victoria Quijas.
Pallbearers were Roland Gomez, Richard Gomez, Moe Martinez, Robert Samora, Oscar Diaz and Chris Luna.

Honorary pallbearers were Robert Campos, Robert Lopez, Andy Reyes and Joe Huerta.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the Protestant Chapel Fund, c/o MEDVANC, 2002 Holcombe Boulevard, Houston, TX 77030.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Lawrence Petersen

Lawrence J. Petersen, age 73, passed away on Jan. 31, 2005 at his home in Danevang. He was born on Feb. 13, 1931, in Danevang to the late Verner A. and Louise Olson Petersen.

He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Bliss during the Korean Conflict. He earned a degree in agricultural engineering from Texas A&I University. Mr. Petersen was currently serving as a trustee on the Wharton County Junior College Board of Directors having served six years as chairman, a present member of the Commercial State Bank Board of directors, served 20 years on the board of Cotton Incorporated which promotes cotton research and marketing, helped initiate and served as president of the South Texas Cotton and Grain Association, served as past president of Texas Pest Management and was a former Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria McDonald Petersen of Danevang; daughters, Pamela Pope and husband J. Paul of Reston, Va., Laurie Martin and husband Jimmy of Frankfurt, Germany; son Kyle Petersen and wife Andrea of Chicago, Ill.; grandchildren; Travis Pope, Angela Martin, Corie Pope, Leah Martin, Karis Martin, Jesi Petersen and Scott Petersen; and brother Ralph Petersen of Danevang.
Visitation will begin at noon today, Wednesday. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 7 p.m. at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo. Funeral Services will be held at noon on Thursday at First Baptist Church in El Campo with Rev. Rick DuBroc officiating. Interment will be in the Danevang Lutheran Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Travis Pope, Jimmy Barger, Edgar Beyer, Darryl Petersen, Donald McDonald Jr. and Mickey McDonald.
Honorary pallbearers are his granddaughters.

Memorials in memory of Lawrence Petersen may be made to the Danish Heritage Museum in Danevang.

Charlyne Spaniel

Funeral services for Charlyne Stephens Spanihel, 77, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus. Prayer service and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus and then from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Interment will follow the funeral services in Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake.

Joyce Wynn

Joyce Cox Wynn, age 94, was born in Algoa. On Jan. 28, 2005, she entered into eternal life with Jesus and is now a rookie in Heaven. Mrs. Wynn, who lived in Friendswood came into this world Jan. 7, 1911. She was a longtime resident of Boling and was a lifetime member of Iago Federated Church. Mrs. Wynn was elected Woman of The Year back in the late 1980s by the citizens of Boling for her dedication to helping others.

She was a giver, she loved to help anyone with a need. Her hobby was her flower beds and writing letters to all of her many friends back in Boling and Iago and to her family.

Before her age took over she really enjoyed working on the reunions for Old Gulf School.

She was preceded in death by her husband W.W. “Bill” Wynn III, son James C. “Jimmy” Wynn and her grandsons, Billy Wynn Jr. and Danny W. Wynn. She leaves behind her loving son and loving daughter-in-law, Billy and Ann Wynn of Friendswood; sister, Jewell and husband Gordon Hallenbeck of Houston; sisters-in-law, Aileen Cox of Matagorda and Bernadine Wynn of Houston; grandsons, Wesley Wynn of Friendswood, Rick Vickers of Alvin; granddaughters, Dyane Wynn and her husband Tom Magliolo of League City, Joyce Vickers Pearson of Mabelton, Ga.; great-grandson, Steven and wife Rachel Coleman of Friendswood; great-granddaughter, Shandy Wynn of Deer Park and Christy Coleman and husband J.D. Morgan of League City; great-great grandchildren, Ryan, Brett and Ashely Coleman, all of Friendswood, Cassandra, Cierra and Sebastian Travis Wynn, all of Deer Park; nephews, Raymond Cox of Matagorda, Terry Salley of Indianapolis, Ind., Wynn Norris and wife Margie of Socorro, N.M., and Euclid Norris and wife Bobbie Jean of Baytown; nieces, Alma Humphrey of Houston, Judy Cox of Pearland and Geraldine Noble and her husband Zek of Marble Falls; and a host of wonderful friends.

Pallbearers are Jordan Taylor of Cypress, Euclid Norris, Rick Vickers, Tom Magliolo, Wesley Wynn, Dick Chamrad, all of Friendswood, and Karl McLeod of Iago.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at 10 a.m. at Forest Park East Funeral Home with Pastor Mickey Reynolds of Iago Federated Church officiating. Interment followed at Forest Park East Cemetery.

Marjorie Zeidman

Longtime Wharton business and civic leader Marjorie Todes Franklin Zeidman, 87, was buried in Shearith Israel Cemetery on Thursday, Jan. 27. She died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005.

She was born on Dec. 7, 1917, in Galveston to Lew and Dorothy Littman Todes. She was the wife of the late Mervin Franklin and is survived by her husband, Morris Zeidman. She is also survived by her sons, Rabbi Wayne Franklin and his wife, Dr. Anne Presser Franklin, of Providence, RI; Gordon Franklin and his wife, Linda, of Sugar Land; her step-son, Fred Zeidman and his wife, Kay, of Houston; her brother, Lew Todes Jr., and his wife, Josephine, of Houston; her sisters-in-law Vivian Salinger of Wharton and Nancy Todes of Dallas. She was the sister of the late Dr. Jay L. Todes.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Debra Zalvan, David, Batya, Mark and Lauren Franklin; by her step-grandchildren, Leslie, Mark, Jay and Nancy Zeidman; and by her great-grandchildren, Emma and Jacob Franklin.

Marjorie was a co-founder with Mervin Franklin in January of 1947 of the Franklin Furniture Company in Wharton. She was active in Shearith Israel Congregation, Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, the Wharton Chapter of Hadassah, Wharton Lions Club, Wharton Historical Museum, Wharton Chamber of Commerce, and Wharton Garden Club.

Funeral services were Thursday, January 27, 2005, at Congregation Beth Yeshurun, in Houston at 11a.m. Burial was in Shearith Israel Cemetery in Wharton at 1 p.m.

Orrie Baade

Orrie Elizabeth Overton Baade, who died on Jan. 26, 2005, was born in Slaughter, La., on Nov. 22, 1912, the fourth of 12 children of Charles Pinckney and Blanche Coleman Overton.

Mrs. Baade lived in Austin with Berenice and Thomas Cox, her father’s sister and husband, from age seven until she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Texas in 1932. She taught in Independence and Nixon before moving to Newgulf in 1935, where she taught for four years before marrying. In 1954, she returned to the classroom and taught English in Boling and then Iago Junior High School for 18 years. Mrs. Baade was honored that many of her former students expressed their appreciation for her whenever they met.
Mrs. Baade married her husband of 56 years, Henry Howard Baade Sr., on June 14, 1939, and made her home for the next 65 years in the house near Iago which her husband had had build for them.
A proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mrs. Baade in 1998 received her 50-year pin. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the teachers’ honorary society, for more than 40 years. With her husband, she belonged to the Methodist denomination in the Iago Federated Church, where for many years she taught a Ladies Sunday School class.

Mrs. Baade is survived by daughter, Laura Lee Baade Gracy and husband, David B. Gracy II of Austin; son, Henry Howard Baade and wife, Mary Walker Roberson Baade of Washington, N.C.; grandchildren, Laura Annette Gracy Juba and husband, Joseph “Jay” Juba of Austin, Mary Beth Gracy Martinez and husband, Jason Martinez of Houston, Benjamin Baade Gracy of Boulder, Colo., Ann Catherine Baade Jouett and husband, the Reverend Jason Jouett of Houston, and Howard Roberson Baade and wife, Jennifer Christensen Baade of Galveston; great-grandchildren, Jacob Paul and Gracy Elizabeth Juba of Austin, Elizabeth Alice Martinez of Houston, Walker Harrison, Corbett Andrew, and Caroline Elizabeth Jouett of Houston, Corynn Elizabeth Baade of Galveston; three sisters, one brother, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Howard Baade Sr., on Jan. 13, 1996.

Services are being held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at the Iago Federated Church, with burial in the family plot in the Sealy City Cemetery in Sealy. The minister officiating is Mickey Reynolds.

Pallbearers are Howard Baade, Benjamin Gracy, Jason Jouett, Jacob Juba, Jay Juba and Jason Martinez.

The family requests that memorials be made to Iago Federated Church or a charity of personal choice.
