Janie Bernal
Funeral services for Janie Bernal, 81, of Wharton, were held Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Carlos Lynch officiating. Rosary services were held Sunday at the Wharton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bernal died Aug. 27, 2005, in Rosenberg. She was born on July 11, 1924 in Ganado, the daughter of the late Santos Rosales and Simona Bernal Rosales.
She was a longtime resident of Wharton County, having lived in Mackay, Lane City and most recently Wharton.
Mrs. Bernal was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and the Guadalupanis. She married Juan Bernal Sr., who preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 1997.
Survivors include her daughter, Dora Castro and husband, John, of Wharton; sons, Felix Ramirez of Wharton, Juan Bernal Jr. of Wharton and Manuel Bernal of Rosharon; seven grandchildren and numerous sisters and brothers also survive.
Mrs. Bernal was also preceded in death by a daughter, Josephine Bernal, and a brother, Matt Garcia.

August Kubes
Funeral services for Augustine “August” Raymond Kubes, 60, of East Bernard, were held Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with Rev. Don Ruppert officiating. Burial followed in Holy Cross Cemetery.
A wake service was held Thursday at Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Mr. Kubes died Aug. 21, 2005, at his residence following a brief illness. He was born Dec. 2, 1944, in East Bernard the son of the late John Kubes and Albina Lucy Dirba Kubes.
He had been a lifelong resident of East Bernard and graduated from East Bernard High School in 1963.
Mr. Kubes was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard and was also a member of the East Bernard American Legion Post No. 226 and the KJT. He worked as a service technician for Southwestern Bell Telephone until his retirement in 2003.
Mr. Kubes was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Kubes.
Survivors include his sisters and brothers-in -law, Judy and August Hartfield of Richmond and Anna and David Huebel of Round Rock; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Mary Ann Kubes of East Bernard, Daniel and Susan Kubes of Phoenix, Ariz., Jerome and Patsy Kubes of Rosenberg, Joseph Kubes and C. W. Kubes, both of East Bernard; sister-n-law, Lynette Atkins of Rosenberg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Holy Cross Cemetery Fund, c/o Holy Cross Catholic Church, 839 Church St., East Bernard, TX 77435.
Lloyd Robinson
Funeral services for Lloyd Robinson, 88, of East Bernard, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Little Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Booker officiating.
Burial will follow in Powell Point Cemetery in Kendleton.

Augusta Stewart
Funeral services for Augusta Mae Stewart, 58, of East Bernard, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mother Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Donald Dickson officiating. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Pierce Boone Funeral Home.
Mrs. Stewart died Aug. 24, 2005, at Houston Hospice. She was born Jan. 20, 1947, in Richmond to the late Rev. Jesse James and Mary Dee Robins Dickson.
She was Baptist by faith and worked as a loan administration officer for J.P. Morgan Chase Bank.
Survivors include sisters, Loretta Dickson Turner of Richmond, Margel Dickson Hough of East Bernard and Wilma Dickson Randall of Wharton. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
Marie Dornak
Marie Emily Dornak of El Campo passed away on Sept. 22, 2005, at the age of 90. She was born July 24, 1915, in Shiner to the late Joseph and Carrie Theresa Svoboda Furch.
She is survived by her son, Lee Roy Dornak of Wharton; daughter, Charleen Johnson of Wharton; four grandchildren, Doris and Keith Dornak of Wharton, Karen and Johnny Womack of Katy, Janet and Albert Hoffman of Wharton and Robbin Johnson of Wharton; two great-grandchildren, Krystal Dornak of Wharton and Mallory Womack of Katy; a sister, Adell Puska of Shiner; and Robert Furch of El Campo.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charlie Dornak; grandson, Troy Wayne Johnson; and great-grandson, Arvil Dornak.
Mrs. Dornak was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, KJZT and SPJST.
Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005, at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo.
A rosary conducted by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at Triska Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow on Thursday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Gary Janak officiating.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Womack, Albert Hoffman, George Legler, Bill Hubenak, Bobby Furch and Louis Edward Puska.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of personal choice.
Elida Longoria
Funeral services for Elida Longoria, 62, of Glen Flora, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
Mrs. Longoria died Sept. 25, 2005, at her residence following an extended illness.
Friends may call for visitation after 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Wharton Funeral Home and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
John Marx
Funeral services for John Edward Marx, 78, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at Mount Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Johnson Cemetery in Sorrel community. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Matthews Funeral Home.
Mr. Marx died Sept. 24, 2005, at Rosenberg Rehabilitation Center. He was born Aug. 9, 1927, in Wharton County to the late Wilbert and Agnes Marx.
He was a retired manager.
Survivors include daughters, Norma Marx, Yvonne Powell and Alisha Marx; son, John Marx Jr.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Robert Roberts
Funeral services for Rev. Robert Charles Roberts, 54, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. G. Alexander officiating. Burial will follow in Roberts Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.
Rev. Roberts died Sept. 24, 2005, at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. He was born Aug. 12, 1951, in Wharton to Emma Roberts.
Survivors include sons, Randy Carl Roberts of Pledger; daughters, Stephanie Roberts of Houston and Laura Flecia Roberts of Rosenberg; sisters, Ora Lee Roberts White and Carol Carr, both of Wharton; and seven grandchildren.
June Scrofne
Funeral services for June Rose Scrofne of Hitchcock will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Hitchcock.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at James Crowder Funeral Home in Hitchcock.
Mrs. Scrofne died Sept. 22, 2005.
Survivors include husband, Joseph A. Scrofne Sr.; son, Joseph A. Scrofne Jr.; daughters, Rose Marie Theiler, Trish Anderson and Barbara Derrick; sisters, Willie Mae Doree Stifflemire of Wharton, Catherine Schmidt, Hallie Bennett, Dot Thigpen and Melba Faye Wolfe; brothers, Edwin Hetzel and Joe Hebert; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Yolland
Elizabeth “Beth” Ann Yolland, 55, of San Marcos, passed away peacefully at her home on Sept. 20, 2005, with her devoted husband by her side.
She was the daughter of Marjorie Thigpen Yolland and the late William Livingstone Yolland.
Born Nov. 28, 1949, she grew up in Wharton, graduated from Wharton County Junior College, then went to Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos to earn a BS and MS in chemistry and biology. Her teaching career as a chemistry teacher was at San Marcos High School.
Loved by those whom she came into contact throughout the years, she tried to be a positive influence. She remained optimistic throughout her long battle with breast cancer.
The simple things are what she enjoyed, never tiring of learning about the computer, crafts, photography, and gardening.
She loved seeing the flowers bloom and hearing the birds sing. Her theory was “Plant ample. Plant enough to share with the caterpillars and other critters. And most importantly, plant enough to share with your friends.”
She is survived by her husband, Dr. David C. Whitenberg; her mother; her brother, David Yolland of Nash; sisters, Mary Cash and her husband Jim Szoeke of Houston and Margie Hubenak and her husband Gene of Wharton; nieces and nephews.
Three sisters-in-law also survive, Marian Bowden of Linden, Martha Jane Wynn of Tyler, and LaJo Stiteler and her husband Glenn of Washington, Pa.
Also surviving are the ladies from the cancer support group and the “lunch bunch ladies.” She enjoyed your true friendship and witty conversations.
From Beth, “Thanks, girls.” Mrs. Yolland gave so much of herself and was an inspiration to all who knew her.
She will be greatly missed and will live in our hearts forever.
A memorial service was held on Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Thomason Funeral Home in San Marcos.
In keeping with her wishes, she will be cremated and her ashes will be buried at Linden Cemetery in Linden.

Narvell Hearn
Funeral services for Narvell Hearn, 89, of Egypt, were held Tuesday at Mount Gilead Baptist Church with Rev. Coby Shorter III officiating. Burial followed in Sand Ridge/Mount Gilead Cemetery in Egypt.
Mrs. Hearn died Sept. 18, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Aug. 1, 1916, in Egypt to William and Bertha Heard Johnson.
She was Baptist by faith and was a homemaker.
Survivors include daughter, Bernice Jenkins of Egypt; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Vernell Hensch
Funeral services for Vernell Hensch, 83, of East Bernard, were held Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in East Bernard with Rev. Michael Holcomb officiating. Burial followed in the Methodist Cemetery in East Bernard.
Mrs. Hensch died Sept. 15, 2005, in a Wharton nursing home following an extended illness. She was born on Feb. 26, 1922, in Houston County, the daughter of the late Roy Cecil and Effie Atkinson Cecil.
She was a longtime resident of East Bernard and a member of the First United Methodist Church in East Bernard. Mrs. Hensch was also a member of the WSCS at the church. She married Charles Henry Hensch on Dec. 20, 1939, in East Bernard and he preceded her in death on June 4, 2005. They would have been married for 65 years on Dec. 20, 2005. She was a homemaker, wife and mother while her daughters were growing up and then went to work for Houston Light & Power Company as an executive secretary for 10 years until her retirement in 1975.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law; Linda and Lee Evett of Pearland, Wanda and Al Wilson and Sandra and Jim May, all of East Bernard; sisters, Carol Ann Stephens of Friendswood and Verniece Clayton of Georgetown; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren also survive.
