Richard Johnson

A memorial service for Richard Philup “Bear” Johnson Jr., age 57, of Wharton, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, at First Baptist Church of Wharton.

Pastor Mack Mathis and Michael Limas of Grace Community Fellowship will preside at the service.

Richard Johnson was born March 16, 1948, to Richard Philup and Mary A. Moore Johnson in Beaumont.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Franklin D. Taylor, William Lee Taylor and John David Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Johnson of Wharton; sons, Justin Vaughan, James Johnson and Clinton Phillip Johnson; daughter, Aimee Johnson; one sister, Margie Willrich of Wharton; granddaughter, Kourtney Johnson of East Bernard; and his ex-wife, Carolyn Vaughan of Dallas.

Lela Wilson

Funeral services for Lela Louise Wilson, 86, of Wharton, were held at Friday at First Baptist Church in Wharton with Rev. Mack Mathis officiating. Burial followed in Wharton City Cemetery.
Mrs. Wilson died Sept. 12, 2005, in a Wharton nursing home following an extended illness.

She was born on Oct. 7, 1918, in Sulphur, La., the daughter of the late Owen Clifford Burton and Margarite Thomas Phillips Burton.

She had been a resident of Wharton since 1937 and was a former resident of Newgulf and Uvalde. Mrs. Wilson married Thurman Neal Wilson on May 9, 1937, in Sugar Land.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Wharton, Wharton Garden Club, W.M.U. at First Baptist Church, The Thespians and the Dairy Queen Club. In the mid 1970s she worked at the Wharton Spectator.

Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Madeline Elaine Graves; and two brothers, Leslie Ray Burton and Ira Daniel Burton.
Survivors include her husband, Thurman Neal Wilson of Wharton; daughter, Harriett R. Montgomery of Highlands; son and daughter-in-law, William Neal and Norma Jeanne Wilson of Batesville; sister, Marilyn C. Collins of El Campo; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Kaye Wilson of Houston.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the First Baptist Church, 507 N. Fulton, Wharton, TX 77488; or the Wharton Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 681, Wharton, TX 77488.

Mary Garza

Funeral services for Mary Ray Garza, 66, of Wharton, were held Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating.
Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Sunday Wharton Funeral Home.

Ms. Garza died Sept. 9, 2005, in a Wharton hospital following a sudden illness.

She was born on March 17, 1939, in Edna, one of four daughters of the late Enrique Garza and Annie Montez Garza.
She had been a resident of Wharton since her early childhood. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Survivors include her sisters, Consuelo Garza of Houston, Lupe Garza of Wharton and Lois Garza of Wharton; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by brothers, Gilbert Garza Sr., Enrique Garza Jr., Paul Garza and Edward Garza.

If desiring, memorials may be made to a charity of personal choice.

Richard Johnson

Margaret Venglar

Margaret Marie Venglar, age 74 of Wharton, passed away Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, in a Wharton hospital following a brief illness. She was born Dec. 9, 1930, in East Bernard, the daughter of Emil Stephen and Sophie Ann Urban Scholz.

Mrs. Venglar was a 1948 graduate of East Bernard High School. She married Roland Alvin Venglar on Nov. 21, 1949, in East Bernard. She worked for 20 years as the classified ad clerk at the Wharton Journal-Spectator and had been at the newspaper for nearly 27 years. Mrs. Venglar was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the KJZT and Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

A rosary service conducted by Dolores Svatek for the Catholic Daughters will be held today, Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Wharton Funeral Home Chapel. Friends may call for visitation after 3 p.m. today at Wharton Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Roland Alvin Venglar of Wharton; mother, Sophie Scholz of Wharton; daughters, Catherine Haraldsen and husband, John, of Denison, Yvonne Wrench of Richmond, Mary Ann Skoog of Victoria, and Karen Davis of Brighton, Ma.; sons, Thomas Venglar and wife, Caroline of Aurora, Colo., Paul Venglar and wife, Kim, of Fort Worth, Joe Venglar and Pam Schmidt of Boling, Keith Venglar and wife, Sandy, of Virginia Beach, Va., and James Venglar and wife, Mollie, of Poland, Ohio; sisters, Juanita Waligura of Garwood and Emily Svoboda of East Bernard; 20 grandchildren, Kirsten, Peter and Erik Haraldsen, Joseph Aitken and wife, Kim, Carrie Venglar Healy and husband, Jon, Christina Venglar, Brent McClure, Anthony and Victoria Wrench, Rikki Wilkins and husband, Jason, Andrea, Gideon and Dylan Venglar, Kimberly Mach, Matthew Skoog, Jeremy Davis, Lisa Venglar, Leslie and Zachary Venglar, Emily Venglar, Stacy McClure, and Clint Skoog; and 13 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Emil Scholz; sister, Agnes Svoboda; and brother, Emil Charles Scholz.

Pallbearers are Brent McClure, Matthew Skoog, Jeremy Davis, Anthony Wrench, Gideon Venglar and Peter Haraldsen.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Lela Wilson

Funeral services for Lela L. Wilson, 86, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at First Baptist Church in Wharton. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.

Mrs. Wilson died Sept. 13, 2005, in a Wharton nursing home following an extended illness.

Friends may call for visitation after 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Diana Mata

Diana Marie Mata, age 32, of Wharton died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, in a Wharton hospital following a brief illness. She was born on July 18, 1973, in Wharton, the daughter of Amador Daniel Mata and the late Beatriz Salinas Mata.

Miss Mata had been a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton. She was preceded in death by her mother, Beatriz Mata on Aug. 29, 2001.

A rosary was recited Friday evening, Oct. 21, 2005, at Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass will be held today, Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include her father and step-mother, Daniel and Yolanda Mata of Wharton; sister, Veronica Ann Mata of San Marcos; grandmother, Benita Salinas of Richmond; nephew, Anthony Whitington of San Marcos; three step-sisters, five step-brothers and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Roy Garza, Paul Cedillo Sr., Gary Nunez, Robert Mata Jr., Victor Mata and Ricky Salinas.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Ave., Wharton, TX 77488.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Rose Moore

Funeral services and interment for Rose Marie Moore, 78, of Waco, were held Friday, Oct. 14, at The Mausoleum at Waco Memorial Park Cemetery North with Msgr. Mark Deering officiating.
Mrs. Moore died Oct. 11, 2005. She was born May 18, 1927, in Kingsbury to Eugene Richard Ganske and Frances Bialas Ganske.

She graduated from high school in Boling and became an X-ray medical laboratory technician. Mrs. Moore worked for many years at Outlar and Blair Medical Clinic in Wharton. She married Edward H. Moore on Sept. 7, 1955.

Two of their children were born in Wharton and two in Dallas where they lived for 10 years. The family moved to Waco in 1968 and became members of St. Louis Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, George Ganske; and sister, Hildegard Farmer.

Survivors include husband, Edward H. Moore of Waco; children, David Moore and wife, Toni, of Iola, Annette Moore of Houston, Fran Kroll and husband, Ronnie, of West, and Lisa Davis and husband, Clifton, of Wylie; brother, Eugene Raymond Ganske and wife, Dorothy, of Boling; several nieces and nephews; and eight grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Michael Wrobliski

Michael Ray “Mike” Wrobliski, age 49, of Wharton died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born on March 11, 1956, in Rosenberg, the son of the late Raymond Wrobliski and Edna Wleczyk Wrobliski.

Mr. Wrobliski was a resident of Wharton for the past five years and former resident of El Campo. He worked as a mechanic and fork lift operator at Nan Ya Plastics for the past three years.
Mr. Wrobliski married Sheila Rae Davis Gould on Sept. 29, 2000, in Wharton. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Rosenberg.

His hobbies included fishing and barbecue cook offs with the Round II Cookers.

A wake service was held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Don Storey officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
Survivors include his wife, Sheila Wrobliski of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa and Jake Helfer of Sequin, Shelby and Zachary Andrew of Schertz, Laci Gould and Jordan Gould, both of San Antonio; son, Chad Michael Wrobliski of El Campo; sister, Janie Bohacek of Rosenberg; brothers, Wes Wrobliski, Rick Wrobliski, Jeff Wrobliski and Rodney Wrobliski, all of Rosenberg; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Pallbearers were Leo Garza, Michael Herrera, Mike Malik, Hector Ortiz, Cesar Chapa and Lynn Joyce.

Honorary Pallbearers were Jacob Helfer and Zachary Andrew.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Hospice Support, Inc., P.O. Box 1417, El Campo, TX 77437; or M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210-4486.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Alfred Taylor

Alfred Otto Taylor, age 87, of Wharton, passed away Oct. 15, 2005, in Wharton following an extended illness. He was born Jan. 20, 1918, in Weimar, the son of the late Arthur Neal and Agnes Skrovan Taylor.

He was a 63-year resident of Wharton County, having lived in Newgulf and Wharton. Mr. Taylor married Lorena Koudela on Jan. 3, 1942, in El Campo. He worked for Texas Gulf Sulphur for 32 years as a driller and tool pusher until his retirement. Mr. Taylor was a member of the Wharton Knights of Columbus, Wharton American Legion Post No. 87 and Holy Family Catholic Church. He loved farming and raising cattle.

A rosary service was held Monday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Burial and military graveside services under the auspices of the Wharton American Legion Post No. 87 followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Lorena, of Wharton; daughter, Karen D. Cox and Jim Maltbie of Byron, Calif.; son, Gary A. Taylor and Geneva Kay Wilson of Palacios and Theodore A. Taylor and wife, Elizabeth of West Columbia; brothers, Robert Taylor and wife, Annie, of Kemp and Walter Taylor and wife, Albina, of El Campo; grandchildren, Mark Taylor, Veronica McDonald and husband, Larry, Rex Taylor and Danny Taylor. He was preceded in death by sisters, Annie Hubenak and Hattie Lutringer; and brother, Arthur Taylor.

Pallbearers were Paul Koudela, Raymond Koudela, Jason Koudela, Rex Taylor, Danny Taylor, Danny Staeltje, Sam Staeltje, Larry McDonald, Mark Taylor, Larry Erdelt and Eugene Koudela.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Mollie Hawkins

Funeral services for Mollie Hawkins, 92, of Wharton, will be held at noon Wednesday at Macedonia Baptist Church.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Virgie Moore

Funeral services for Virgie M. Moore, 80, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at The Temple of Glory with Rev. A. Banks officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Monday.

Mrs. Moore died Oct. 12, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born July 29, 1925, in Camerson to Robert and Alma Miller Payne.

Survivors include husband, Willie Moore of Wharton; son, Patrick Moore of Wharton; sister, Lucille Payne Wilson of Abilene; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
