Guadalupe Rivera

Funeral services for Guadalupe Don “Poppy” Rivera, age 57, of Wharton, were held Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Rivera died Oct. 10, 2005, following an extended illness. He was born Jan. 7, 1948, in Newgulf, the son of Dionicio C. Rivera Jr. and the late Josephine Tafolla.

He lived in Newgulf until 1959 when he moved to Wharton with his family. Mr. Rivera graduated from Wharton High School in 1966 and then attended Wharton County Junior College where he played baseball. After WCJC he attended Sam Houston State University where he graduated in 1971 with a BBA. Mr. Rivera married Olga Ramirez on June 25, 1977, in Wharton.

Mr. Rivera was employed by Community State Bank in Boling and Wharton for the past 31 years and was currently a senior vice-president and member of the board of directors. He was a very devoted member of Mount Carmel Catholic Church where he served on the Finance Committee. Mr. Rivera was one of the first Hispanic members of the Wharton Independent School Board. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, board member of Cape Carancahua Home Owners’ Association and also coached Little League, Babe Ruth Baseball and Wharton Girls Softball for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Olga Rivera of Wharton; daughter, Kristi Renee Rivera of Rosenberg; son, Kristofor Don Rivera and wife, Christi, of Round Rock; brothers, Daniel Rivera and wife, Gloria, of Rosenberg and David Rivera and wife, Tina, of Wharton; step-brothers, Joseph Rivera and wife Mary of Shiner and Rudolph Rivera and wife Olivia of Victora; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Josephine Rivera on May 24, 1990.

If desiring memorials may be made to the Don Rivera Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Community State Bank, 1610 N. Alabama Road, Wharton TX 77488.

Cleyone Chapman

Funeral services for Cleyone Esther Chapman, 79, of Pledger, were held Sunday at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Mickey Reynolds officiating. Burial followed in the Wharton City Cemetery.

Mrs. Chapman died Oct. 6, 2005, in an automobile accident in Fort Bend County. She was born on Dec. 22, 1925, in Independence, Kan., the daughter of the late Charles Ivan Romig and Frances Garr Romig.

She had been a resident of Pledger for the past 55 years and was a member of Iago Federated Church in Iago. Mrs. Chapman married Jack Charles Chapman on March 16, 1947, in El Campo and he preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1983. She was also preceded in death by two brothers. Mrs. Chapman was a registered nurse graduating from the Lilly Jolly School of Nursing in Houston and worked for several years at Caney Valley Hospital in Wharton.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Franklin Moore of Pledger; sons and daughters-in-law, Tom Chapman and wife Frieda and Dr. David Chapman and wife Martha; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Iago Federated Church, Rt. 1 Box 208, Boiling, TX 77420.

Doug Harrison

Doug Harrison, age 78, of Crockett, passed away Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at his residence. He was born Aug. 14, 1927, in Palestine and had lived in Crockett all of his life.

He was a graduate of Crockett High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps having served during World War II. Mr. Harrison was the owner of Stowe Lumber Company until his retirement and was a member of First Baptist Church in Crockett.

Survivors include sons, Clay Harrison of Allen and Rex Harrison of Wharton; grandchildren, Nicholas Harrison and Douglas Cole Harrison, both of Allen; brother, Gene Harrison of Crockett; nieces, Charlotte Kimble of Crockett and Brenda Welter of Clemson, S.C.; and nephew, Drexel Harrison of Austin.
Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Ann Harrison in 1997.

Funeral services for Mr. Harrison were held Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Crockett with Dr. Ed Hogan and Rev. Keeney Dickenson officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Callaway-Allee Funeral Home in Crockett.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 212 Gene Samford, Lufkin TX 75904; or the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 97089, Washington, D.C. 20090-7089.

Don Rivera

Funeral services for Don Rivera, 57, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Wharton Funeral Home. Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Rivera died Oct. 10, 2005, in Houston following an extended illness.

Beth Yolland

A memorial service for Beth Yolland, 55, who died on Sept. 19, 2005, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church.

The family will host a reception after the service in the Fellowship Hall at the church.

Malachi Baylor

Funeral services for Malachi Baylor, 2-month-old son of Kristy Baylor and Larry Lee Cunningham Sr. of Palacios will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Olive Baptist Church in El Campo. Burial will follow in El Campo Community Cemetery.

Malachi was born Aug. 23, 2005, in Bay City. He died Oct. 20, 2005.
Survivors include his parents and siblings, Jakambrem Johnson, K’Veon Johnson, Ayaana Cunningham, Larry Cunningham III, Brittany Breanna, Malcom, Torsyiah and Sebastian Cunningham.

Charles Davidson

Funeral services for Charles Lee Davidison, 55, of Richmond, will be ehld at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Gilead Baptist Church with Rev. R. Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Gilead Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.
Mr. Davidson died Oct. 21, 2005, at Memorial Hermann Southwest. He was born July 19, 1950, in Wharton to Felbert and Ruth Ellen Davis Davidson.

Survivors include wife, Kathy Matthews Davidson of Richmond; daughter, Caroline Clark of Austin; sisters, Lillian Sanford of Garwood, Sarah Ray of Hungerford, Ruth Brooks of Egypt and Deborah Davidson of Wharton; five grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

Arthur Gillis

Funeral services for Arthur Lee Gillis, 83, of Houston, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Camp Zion-Rising Star United Baptist Church with Rev. C. Owens officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Zion Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Gillis died Oct. 18, 2005, at Memorial Hermann Southwest. He was born Jan. 27, 1922, in Wharton to Edison and Daisy Batts Gillis.

Survivors include daughter, Daisy Gillis of Houston; brother, Earnest Gillis of Port Lavaca; sister, Dorothy Ellis of Victoria; three grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

Sherry Hollingsworth

Following cremation, funeral services for Sherry Bourne Hollingsworth, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Joe Vrana and Rev. Walter Montondon officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Beaumont.

Mrs. Hollingsworth was born Sept. 2, 1949, in Houston, to Alston E. and Myrtis Roper Bourne. She died on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005.

Mrs. Hollingsworth was preceded in death by her mother, Myrtis Bourne; one brother, Philip Bourne; and grandparents, Philip and Lucille Key and Ralph and Ollie Roper.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Hollingsworth; daughter, Amy Hollingsworth and fiancé, Matt Thigpen; son, Andy Hollingsworth; granddaughter, Madison Bell; father, Alston E. Bourne and wife Joyce; brothers, Alston E. Bourne Jr. and Michael Bourne. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Thoracic Department, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210-4486 or a charity of personal choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Clarence Phynon

Funeral services for Rev. Clarence Phynon Sr., 77, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. A.J. Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Rev. Phynon died Oct. 23, 2005, at his residence. He was born Nov. 4, 1927, in Wharton to Milton and Lucille Kelly Phynon.

Survivors include wife, Bernice Moore Phynon of Wharton; sons, Clarence Phynon Jr. of Egypt, Alvin Phynon of Charleston, N.C., Carlton Phynon, Edward Phynon Sr., Melvin Phynon, Kevin Phynon Sr. and Kenneth Phynon, all of Wharton; daughters, Regina Phynon of Hungerford, Linda Phynon and Girthrie Phynon, both of Wharton; brother, Tony Phynon of Wharton; sisters, Wilma Moore and Alice Humphrey, both of Wharton; 35 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

Maria Eureste

Funeral services for Maria De Los Angeles Eureste, 67, of Wharton, were held at 10 a.m. Oct. 24 at Our Lady of Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary was recited Oct. 23 at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Eureste died Oct. 21, 2005, in a Wharton hospital following a sudden illness. She was born on June 1, 1938, in Doctor Arroyo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, the daughter of the late Maximino Reyna and Jovita Obregon Reyna.

She had been a resident of Wharton for the past 26 years and was a former resident of Defiance, Ohio, and Monterrey, Mexico. Mrs. Eureste married Irineo Z. Eureste on Dec. 25, 1974, in Monterrey, Mexico. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and two brothers.

Survivors include her husband, Irineo Eureste of Wharton; daughters, Herlinda Reyna Eureste of Wharton and Dinora Reyna Eureste of Houston; sister, Edelmira Cisneros of Wharton; brothers, Nicolas Reyna of Houston and Jesus Reyna of Mexico. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

George Hodge

Funeral services for George Wayne Hodge, 60, of Wharton, will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Hodge died Oct. 31, 2005, in Wharton.

Friends may call for visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Wharton Funeral Home.

Clayton Irwin

Clayton Hugh “Bo” Irwin Jr., 21, of Wharton, passed away Friday, Oct. 28, 2005. He was born Dec. 29, 1983 in Wharton to Tammy Short Irwin and Clayton H. Irwin Sr.

He was a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wharton.

He is survived by his mother: Tammy Hann and husband Fred Hann of Bay City; by his father, Clayton H. Irwin Sr. and wife Beverly Irwin of Bay City; by his sister, Jessica Mejorado of Wharton; his step-sisters, Vanessa Sanea Granger of Dallas, Lora Gene Guzman of Bay City, Amanda Petrosky of Angleton, Rebecca Moore of Bay City, Olivia Irwin of Bay City and Valerie Irwin of Bay City; and by his grandparents, Mary Ann Irwin of Wharton, Pat and Howard Anderson of Pflugerville and Doug Short of Austin.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005 at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mack Mathis and Rev. Gary Irwin officiating. Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Pallbearers were Jarred Hohensee, Lee Rose, David Mejorado, Richard Williams, Dale Rowland and William Tabor.
Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Colette and Kevin Kerr.

Arrangements were with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City.

Phillis Jackson

Funeral services for Phillis Ann Jackson, 55, of Wharton, were held Monday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. A.J. Kemper officiating. Burial followed in Wharton City Cemetery.

Ms. Jackson died Oct. 25, 2005, at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. She was born Feb. 11, 1950, in Wharton to C.L. and Geraldine Shropshire Jackson.

Survivors include daughters, Nicole Jackson and Vernice Jackson, both of Wharton; brothers, Charlie and Carl Jackson, both of Wharton; sisters, Donna Byars of Kendleton, Samantha Oluation of New Mexico, Cathy Jackson of Houston and Carol Jackson of Wharton; four grandchildren and a hose of other relatives.

Addie Maxwell

Funeral services for Addie Lenora Maxwell, 94, of Wharton, were held Tuesday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Nash officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Maxwell died Oct. 30, 2005, in Victoria following an extended illness. She was born July 20, 1911, in Evergreen. She was one of eight children of the late Jessie Hoot and Annie Peggy Carter Hoot.

She was a former resident of Victoria before moving to Wharton in 1975. Mrs. Maxwell was a homemaker and a member of the Wharton Assembly of God Church. She married Edward Bryan Maxwell May 5, 1928, in Wharton and he preceded her in death on June 9, 1978.

Survivors include her daughters, Annie Viola Dickey of Mathis, Fay Lenora Alley and husband, Charles, of Lockhart, Peggy O’Dell Blackmore of Houston and Donna Janette Bentley and husband, Bill, of Forth Worth; sons, Edward Wilkerson Maxwell and wife, Zelda, of Cuero, Ernest Virgil Maxwell and wife, Joellen, of Houston, Roy Earl Maxwell and wife, Mary, of Refugio, Orvel Lynn Maxwell and wife, Marlen, of McAllen, Doyle Ray Maxwell and wife, Patricia, of Robstown and Bryan Wayne Maxwell and wife, Celia, of Victoria; 29 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.

If desiring, memorials may be made to a charity of personal choice.
