Rose Flournoy

Graveside services for Rosamond Alice “Rose” Flournoy, 91, of Albuquerque, N.M., and formerly of Wharton, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Mickey Reynolds officiating. Mrs. Flournoy died Nov. 23, 2004. She was born Nov. 26, 1912.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Flournoy; and children, Elaine and J.B.

Survivors include granddaughter, Allison Cloutier; great-grandchildren, Zack, Tiffany, Amanda and Sarah; three nieces, Evelyn Gilbert, Dorothy McKay and Doris Nelson; and nephew, Gene Swearengin of Belen, N.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Vista Hospice Care, Venice N.E. Suite A, Albuquerque N.M. 87113.

Elgean Guffey

Former Mayor Elgean Pershing “Gene” Guffey, age 85, of Wharton, died Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, in Wharton. He was born Dec. 21, 1919, in East Bernard, one of eight children of the late Otis Vernon Guffey and Tressa Blanch Shelton Guffey.

Mr. Guffey graduated from East Bernard High School in 1938, where he lettered in track and field, baseball, basketball and football. He was an all-district end and captain of the 1938 District Championship team. After graduation he moved to Wharton and worked for the Houston Oil Station and Duval Sulfur Co. from 1938-42.

He joined the Navy on April 23, 1942, and served in the South Pacific for 42 months during World War II. Mr. Guffey achieved the rank of First Class Petty Officer and was honorably discharged in September of 1945.

Mr. Guffey returned to Wharton and married the love of his life, Alice Elizabeth Kana, on April 20, 1946, in Wharton. They celebrated their 59th anniversary on that day this year. In 1949 he opened Guffey Packing Company, a meat market and grocery business. After 27 years, the business burned to the ground on Nov. 6, 1976. During this time he also owned and operated Gene’s Do-nut Shop and Ice Cream Parlor for nine years.

During these busy years, he found time to attend night classes at Wharton County Junior College and completed a two-year program including all courses required for a realtor’s license. Mr. Guffey entered the real estate business in November of 1976. He and Alice opened their own real estate firm, Gene Guffey Real Estate, in June 1981 where he worked until his retirement in 2004.

During his 67 years in Wharton, Mr. Guffey led a very active community-oriented and family- oriented life. His list of accomplishments epitomize the Lions Club Motto, “We Serve.” He served as president of Wharton Lions Club, president of the Wharton County 100 Club twice, commander of the VFW twice, president of the W.C.J.C. Booster Club, chairman of First United Methodist Church Administrative Board and also served on its Board of Trustees, chairman of the Wharton County Selective Service Board, served on the Wharton City Council from 1970 to 1972, was Mayor of Wharton from 1972 to 1976, was Municipal Judge of Wharton from 1977 until he retired from that position in 1988. The City of Wharton recognized Gene with “Guffey Park” named in his honor for his dedicated service to the community.

He was a life member of the Boy Builders, life member of the Wharton County Youth Fair, life member of the American Legion and VFW, a charter member of Wharton County Crime Stoppers, charter and life member of Wharton County 100 Club, member of Wharton Masonic Lodge No. 621 and was a Master Mason, member of the First United Methodist Church, former member of the Texas Municipal Courts Association, member of Wharton Country Club and served on its board of directors and Wharton Lions Club for 53 years where, in 2001, he was named a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest form of recognition conferred upon a Lion.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at First United Methodist Church with The Rev. Don Storey officiating. military graveside services and interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery under the auspices of the Wharton American Legion Post No. 87. Friends may call for visitation at Wharton Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 16.

Survivors include his wife, Alice of Wharton; daughters, Nancy O’Hearn and husband, Jim, of New Braunfels, Donna Chambers and husband, Jimmie, of Wharton and Carol Guffey of Houston; sons, Bob Guffey and wife, Sarah, of Sugar Land and Bill Guffey of Houston; sisters, Mary Obenhaus and husband, Donald, of Bonus, Dottie Lechler and husband, Ed, of Wharton; brother, Donald Guffey and wife, Adele, of Bay City; sister-in-law, Margaret Guffey of Bay City; grandchildren, Scott Chambers and wife, Tammy, of Wharton, Todd O’Hearn of New Braunfels, Stephanie Chambers of Austin, Casey O’Hearn of Charleston, S.C., Laura and Michael Guffey of Sugar Land; great-grandchildren, Kirby and Cale Chambers. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Guffey was preceded in death by his sister, Winnie Shroyer, and husband, Cline; and by brothers, Lloyd Guffey and wife, Lilymae, Vernon Guffey and Clifford Guffey.

Pallbearers are Bob Guffey, Bill Guffey, Scott Chambers, Todd O’Hearn, Casey O’Hearn and Michael Guffey.

Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Victor H. Driscoll, Talmadge Fordham, Bob Wynn, Buddy Tompkins, Richard Arnold, J.B. Johse, Ervin Selcer, Bobby Kleas and all members of the Wharton Lions Club, Wharton County 100 Club, Wharton VFW, Wharton American Legion and Masonic Lodge No. 621.

Memorials may be made to: Wharton County 100 Club, P.O. Box 868, Wharton, TX 77488; or to the First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, TX 77488.

Ida Harris

Funeral services for Ida Marie Harris, 54, of Wharton, were held Sunday at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home with Mubarak A. Al-Muid officiating. Burial followed in Bowden Cemetery.

Mrs. Harris died Nov. 11, 2005. She was born April 21, 1951, in Galveston to Lovie and Mary Louise Bosie Winfield.

Survivors include husband, David Harris Sr. of Wharton; brother, La Shay Winfield of Hitchcock; sister, Mubarakah Al-Muid (Linda Faye Reed) of Columbia, S.C.; and a host of relatives and friends.

Sandra Mata

Sandra Kay “Punky” Mata, age 43, of Wharton, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005, in a Sugar Land hospital. She was born on May 3, 1962, in Wharton, daughter of Gil V. Mata and Susie Cerrillo Mata.

Ms. Mata was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. She was a 1980 graduate of Wharton High School and received her associate’s degree from Wharton County Junior College in 1982. Ms. Mata worked as a sales clerk for Wharton Sears Store for 10 years prior to becoming a telecommunication operator for the City of Wharton, where she has worked for the past 14 years. Ms. Mata was named as a former Employee of the Year and Communicator of the Year for the City of Wharton.

Funeral mass services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Lynch officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Tuesday evening at the Wharton Funeral Home.

Survivors include her mother, Susie Mata of Wharton; sisters, Janie Valdez and husband, Roy Rodriguez, of El Campo, Rosa Mata and husband, Robert Sosa, of Wharton, Sonya Mata of Wharton, and Stacy Aguilar and husband, Greg, of Wharton; brothers, Gil C. Mata of Wharton, Rudolph Mata and wife, Milly, of El Campo, David Mata and wife, Karen, of Baytown and Mark Mata and wife, Vicki, of Wharton; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her father, Gil V. Mata, and a sister, Mary Alice Alameda.

Pallbearers are Richard Valdez Jr., Ronnie Valdez, Frank Valdez, John Cerrillo, Ben Guanajuato and Jeremy Eder.

Honorary pallbearers are all members of the Wharton Police Department.

Ola Parker

Funeral services for Ola Mae Parker, 99, of Houston, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Newman Chapel Methodist Church in Kendleton with Rev. Reed officiating. Burial will follow at Paradise South Cemetery in Pearland.

Mrs. Parker died Nov. 7, 2005, at Wharton Manor Nursing Center. She was born June 23, 1906, in Fayetteville to Isaac and Mattie Darden Burton.

She was a homemaker and Methodist by faith.

Survivors include daughter, Veola McDade of Kendleton; and numerous other relatives.

Harvey Parson

Funeral services for Harvey Parson Jr., 73, of Louise, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Sinai Baptist Church in El Campo. Burial will follow in El Campo Community Cemetery.

Mr. Parson died Nov. 11, 2005, at his residence. He was born Feb. 16, 1902, in Louise to Harvey Parson and Fannie Belle Hardeway.

He worked in the construction industry.
Survivors include wife, Helen Marie Murray Parson; parents, Harvey Parson Sr. and Fannie Bell Hardeway; daughters, Della Marie Parson and Kathrine Turner, both of Richmond, Gwendolyn Williams and Tammie Owens, both of El Campo; sons, Willie Ray Parson of Richmond, Oran “Butch” Clay of Wilmer; sister, Jeanette Williams of Louise; 20 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sons, Frankie Lee Parson and Simmie Parson; brother, Paige Hardeway; and sisters, Alma White, Dorothy Parson and Alice Edwards.

Funeral services for Harvey Parson Jr., 73, of Louise, are pending at Matthews Funeral Home in Wharton.

Glen Williams

Funeral services for Glen Williams Sr., 76, of Pledger, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Grove Hill Baptist Church with Rev. J. Lewings officiating. Burial will follow in Union Baptist Cemetery.

Mr. Williams died Nov. 8, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Aug. 19, 1929, in Pledger to A.D. and Mamie Turner Williams.

Survivors include sons, Glen Williams Jr., A.D. Williams II, Lynn Anthony Williams and Cleon Williams, all of Wharton; daughters, Bobbie Brown of Houston, Elvira Bess, Mary Allen and Kaye Williams, all of Wharton; sisters, Louise Watson of Freeport, Mamie Etta Piper of Houston and Mary Alice Gordon of Wharton; 16 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

Margaret Willrich

Mrs. Margaret Ann Mullins Willrich, age 64, of Boling, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born on Feb. 15, 1941, in Wharton, the daughter of the late Richard Plumb Mullins and Johnnie Dee Fechtner Mullins.

Mrs. Willrich had been a lifelong resident of Boling and was a graduate of Boling High School in 1959. She was Postmaster of the Boling Post Office for 31 years prior to her retirement in January of 2002. Mrs. Willrich married George J. Willrich on Aug. 26, 1990, in Needville. Her hobbies were reading, gardening, horseback riding, dancing and music. She was Christian by faith. Mrs. Willrich was also preceded in death by a sister, Carol Rolf.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with David Allen officiating. Burial followed in the Wharton City Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, George J. Willrich of Boling; daughter and son-in-law, Leslie Kulak Spacek and Anthony of Boling; sons and daughters-in-law, John D. and Karen Kulak, Steven M. and Tonya Kulak, all of Boling, Darrell and Dana Kulak of Hungerford; step-son, George R. Willrich of New Waverly; step-daughter and husband, Lynn and Jimmy Watson of Damon; sister and brother-in-law, Nettie Dian and Mike Floyd of Tyler; brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard P. and Deon Mullins of Sugar Land and A.A. “Gus” and Irene Mullins of Boling; grandchildren; Trey and Tyler Kulak, Hannah and Heath Kulak, Elton and Cynthia Kulak, Hayden, Jordan and Madison Spacek and Brent and Haverty Watson.

Pallbearers were Elton Kulak, Trey Kulak, Tyler Kulak, Michael McCloud, Kenneth Mullins, David Rolf and Dennis Rolf.

Honorary Pallbearers were Heath Kulak, Hayden Spacek and Brent Watson.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to: The American Cancer Society, 204 Second Street, Wharton, TX 77488.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Jessie Curtner

Following cremation, memorial services and burial for Jessie Frank Curtner, 69, of Wharton, were held on Wednesday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Curtner died Nov. 22, 2005, in a Wharton hospital following a brief illness. He was born on July 22, 1936, in Houston, the son of the late Carl Curtner and Annie Allen Curtner.

He had been a resident of Wharton for the past 15 years and was a former resident of Missouri City. Mr. Curtner was a construction worker prior to his retirement and was Baptist by faith. He married Mamie Paralee McLeod Clark on Aug. 6, 2005, in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Mamie Curtner of Wharton; daughter, Carrie Hope of Wallis; son, Robert Curtner of Wharton; sister, Myrtle Curtner of El Campo; and brothers, Calvin Curtner of Blessing and Carlton Curtner of Wharton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the East Wharton County Heart Association, P.O. Box 226, Hungerford, TX 77448.

Viola McMicken

Memorial services for Viola “Margie” McMicken, 74, of Aurora, N.C., will be held at 7 p.m. today, Saturday, at Paul Funeral Home in Washington, N.C. There will be a private burial at a later date.

Mrs. McMicken died Nov. 23, 2005. She was born June 11, 1931, to the late William L. and Viola West Smithey.

She graduated from Boling High School in 1949 and also graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College with a degree in business. Mrs. McMicken married Albert L. McMicken Sr. on Oct. 15, 1950. She worked in inventory control for Texas Gulf Sulphur and was curator for the Aurora Fossil Museum. Mrs. McMicken was a member of the Bath Garden Club, Bath Historical Society, attended Aurora Methodist Church, Edward Christian Church and presently attended White Hill Free Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband, Albert L. McMicken Sr.; sons and daughters-in-law, Albert Louis and Kay McMicken of Charlotte, N.C., Michael Layne and Nancy McMicken of Richmond, Va., and David Leonard McMicken; three grandchildren; brother, Darroll Mark Smithey of Houston; sisters, Erlene Barta and husband, Melvin, of Hull and Wilma Barta and husband, Ervin, of Sour Lake. She was preceded in death by a brother, W.L. Smithey Jr.; and sister, Joy Lord.

Memorials may be made to a charity of personal choice.

Lucille Baines

Funeral services for Lucille Baines, 96, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at New Mount Olive Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmie Wright officiating. Burial will follow in New Mount Olive Cemetery.

Mrs. Baines died Nov. 25, 2005, at Wharton Manor Nursing Center. She was born April 12, 1909, in Victoria to the late Tom and Celia Bess Grimes.

Funeral services for Andrew “Chuck” Nelson, 77, of Wharton, are pending at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home.
