Vane Hayes

Funeral services for Vane Hayes, 63, of East Bernard, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater New Faith Baptist Church with Rev. C. Spears officiating. Burial will follow in Powell Point Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Hayes died Nov. 28, 2005 at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born March 12, 1942, in La Grange to Bennie and Aurelia Lovie Hayes Sr.

Survivors include son, Charles D. Cook of East Bernard; brothers, Kermis Hayes and Otis Hayes, both of East Bernard; sister, Doris Jean Dean of East Bernard; 18 grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

Albert Kalka

Following cremation, a private ceremony will be held for Albert William Kalka Jr., 66, of Lake Jackson.

Mr. Kalka died Nov. 27, 2005. He was born Feb. 24, 1939, in Newgulf to Albert William Kalka Sr. and Bobbie L. Copeland.

He was employed at Texas Gulf Sulphur from 1965 until 2000.

Survivors include sons, Richard Kalka and Christopher Kalka; and three grandchildren.

Griffin Sanford

Funeral services for Griffin William Sanford, 56, of Spanish Camp, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home with Rev. C. Owens officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Zion Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Sanford died Nov. 26. 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Jan. 22, 1949, in Wharton to Horace Owens and Angie Sanford.

Survivors include sisters, Willie Faye Beane of Dallas, Carla Matthews Brown and Kathy Matthews Davidson, both of Richmond; and a host of other relatives.

Dorothy Viktorin

Dorothy Ruth Seydler Viktorin, age 87, of Wharton, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, in Sugar Land following an extended illness. She was born on Feb. 3, 1918, in El Campo, daughter of the late Henry Seydler and Edna Cleckler Seydler.

Mrs. Viktorin was a 1936 graduate of East Bernard High School. She married Rudolph Gabriel “Rudy” Viktorin on June 20, 1936, in Richmond and he preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 1986.

Mrs. Viktorin was a 37-year resident of Freeport before moving to Wharton in 1979. She was a homemaker, a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and its Altar Society, KJZT and the Brazosport Elks Lodge No. 2200.

She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved dancing and celebrating life with her family and friends.

Funeral mass services will be held 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Rosary services were held Tuesday evening at Wharton Funeral Home.

Survivors include her daughter, Dorothy Chumchal and husband, Gary, of Pleak; sons, Donald G. Viktorin and wife, Loyce, of Worland, Wy., Robert B. Viktorin and wife, Charlotte, of Lampasas and Randy R. Viktorin and wife, Melanie, of Freeport; sister, Mary Ann Daniel and husband, Jimmie, of East Bernard; sister-in-law, Ella Mae Seydler of East Bernard; grandchildren, Terry Viktorin and wife, Mary, Forrest Viktorin and wife, Tracey, Donna McGarvin and husband, Mark, Steven Viktorin and wife, Melanie, Dusty Viktorin and wife, Alison, James Chumchal and wife, Shannae, Misty Sherrill and husband, Todd, and Phillip Chumchal, Tanner Viktorin and Kaylan Viktorin; great-grandchildren, Tori Chumchal, Justin, Jacob and Shania McGarvin and Kirstie, Brian, Shane, Landon, Brandon, Ethan and Connor Viktorin.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, Richard Seydler; and by sisters Lillian Williamson and husband, Ray, and Gayle Webb Altwein and husbands, Russell Webb and Raymond Altwein.

Pallbearers are James Chumchal, Phillip Chumchal, Todd Sherrill, Steven Viktorin, Dusty Viktorin, Tanner Viktorin, Terry Viktorin, Forrest Viktorin and Mark McGarvin.

If desiring, memorials may be made to Holy Family Fellowship Committee, c/o Genevieve Maerz, 721 Frankie Avenue, Wharton, TX 77488; or to Holy Family Memorial Fund, 2011 Briar Lane, Wharton, TX 77488.

Robert Chumchal

Funeral services for Robert Rudy “Bob” Chumchal, 59, of East Bernard, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, from Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with Rev. Donald Ruppert celebrating the funeral mass and rite of committal. Interment will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery in East Bernard.

Mr. Chumchal was born in Wharton, the son of Joe and Bertha Cervenka Chumchal. He attended Holy Cross Catholic School, East Bernard High School and Wharton County Junior College. Mr. Chumchal worked as a machinist for Hudson Engineering in Beasley. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, the Riverside Horseshoe Club, enjoyed spending time with his friends, barbecuing, spoiling his grandchildren, playing with his dog “Buddy”, gardening and watching football on TV. Mr. Chumchal died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, in Houston.

He is survived by his parents, Joe and Bertha Chumchal of East Bernard; daughters, Annette Woodruff and husband, Chris; and Susan Hammmer and husband, Chris, all of Granbury; brother, Earl Chumchal and wife, Janice, of Victoria; sister-in-law, Rosie Chumchal of East Bernard; grandchildren, Autumn and Brandon Woodruff and Skyler Hammer and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Chumchal; and brothers, Jody and Gary Chumchal.

Visitation was held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Funeral services were under the direction of Knesek Family Funeral Chapels in Wallis.

Craig Coufal

Craig Brian Coufal of El Campo died Dec. 3, 2005, at the age of 16. He was born May 27, 1989, in Wharton. Craig was a junior at El Campo High School where he played varsity football and participated in track. He was a member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church.

He is survived by his mother, Shelly Coufal of Huntsville; father and step-mother, Emmett Jr. and Cheri Coufal of El Campo; brother, Jeff Coufal of El Campo; step-sister, Larissa Gilbert of El Campo; maternal grandmother, Bobbie Orsak of Victoria; paternal grandparents, Emmett Sr. and Adell Coufal of Victoria; maternal great-grandmother, Mary Orsak of El Campo. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John E. Orsak.

Visitation was from noon until 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Triska Funeral Home. He laid in state from 4 to 5 p.m. at St. Philip Catholic Church, a parish rosary followed at 5 p.m. The funeral mass will be at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church with Rev. Gary Janak officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Triska Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are Wes Cadriel, Trey Orsak, Matt Orsak, Chris Graeter, Jason Morton and Adrian Bustamante. Honorary pallbearers are Brandon Lovell, Brian Labay, Zach Wishert and the Junior Class of El Campo High School.

Memorial donations may be made to the Craig Coufal Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Mark Gaona

Mark Rocky Gaona of El Campo died Dec. 2, 2005, at the age of 16. He was born Feb. 18, 1989, in Wharton, to Rocky Gaona and Abby Hinojosa Vela. Mark was a junior at El Campo High School where he participated in the school/work program and was a member of St. Robert’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and music.

He is survived by his mother and step-father, Abby and Gilbert Vela Jr. of El Campo; father and step-mother, Rocky and Melissa Gaona of Wharton; sister, Mandy Eide of El Campo; brother, Manny Gaona of El Campo; half-brothers, Miles and Gunner Gaona of Wharton; step-sister, Nicole Vela of Georgia; step-brother, Javier Vela of El Campo; maternal grandparents, Santiago and Albina Hinojosa of El Campo; paternal grandmother, Louisa Gaona of Wharton; step-grandparents, Gilbert and Gloria Vela of El Campo. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John Gaona Sr.

Visitation began at noon Tuesday at Triska Funeral Home. He laid in state at St. Robert’s Catholic Church at 6 p.m. and a rosary was recited at 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at St. Robert’s Catholic Church in El Campo. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Mark Gaona Scholarship Fund, c/o First Prosperity Bank, El Campo.

Leona Gee

Funeral services for Leona Gee, 56 of Fort Worth, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olive Baptist Church. Burial will follow in El Campo City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Matthews Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gee died Dec. 4, 2005 at Arlington Medical Center. She was born Feb. 8, 1949, in Eagle Lake to Ruth Cunningham and the late Steve Cotton. She was a certified nurse’s aide.

Survivors include mother, Ruth Cunningham; sons, Gene Gee, Raymond Gee Jr., Marvin R. Gee and Leon Gee; sisters, Glory Geane Hughes and Ruby Willis; brothers, Ellis Cunningham and Marvin Cunningham; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and son, Kevin Gee.

Leandro Lopez

Funeral services for Leandro Lopez, 46, of Hungerford, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford. Burial will follow in the St. John’s Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Lopez died Dec. 4, 2005, at his residence after an extended illness.

Andrew Nelson

Funeral services for Andrew “Chuck” Nelson, 77, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mother Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. C.L. Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church.

Mr. Nelson died Dec. 1, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born July 29, 1928, in Weimar to Andrew Lee and Birdie Shanklin Nelson. He worked as a self-employed paint contractor in Wharton County and surrounding counties for many years.

Survivors include wife, Ernestine Nelson of Wharton; sons, Stephen Nelson of Wharton and Kenneth Nelson of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughters, Peggy Thibodeaux, Winifred Brown, Katherin Hayes and Shelia McNeil Griffin, all of Houston; step-daughters, Sandra Renee Bryant of Pasadena and Sheree N. Bryant of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; brothers, Robert “Bob” Nelson of Wharton, Alpard Nelson of Los Angeles, Calif., and Eugene Wilson of Houston; sisters, Opal Taylor of Houston and Alma Sidney of Los Angeles, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Andrew “Junior” Nelson.

Orville Roberts

Rev. Orville H. Roberts, age 85, of Wharton, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, in a Wharton nursing home following an extended illness. He was born on Aug. 11, 1920, in Plainview, Ark., the son of the late Charles Oliver Roberts and Cora Craig Ford Roberts.

Rev. Roberts was a resident of El Campo from 1960 until 1973 when he moved to Wharton. He was the director of missions of the Coastal Plains Baptist Area for 13 years until his retirement in 1986. Rev. Roberts was a graduate of Ouachita University. He married Ruby Lee Wright on June 3, 1945, in North Little Rock, Ark. Rev. Roberts was a former member of the North Little Rock Masonic Lodge and was also a former member of the Rotary Club. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Roberts, and a brother, Aubrey Roberts.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, at the First Baptist Church in Wharton with Rev. Mack Mathis, Rev. Harold Sellers and Rev. Rick DuBroc officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Roberts of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda Kay and Jerry Stanton of Corpus Christi, and Lisa Ann and Mike Moritz of Brenham; sons and daughter-in-law, Darrell Dean and Teresa Roberts of Edmond, Okla.; sister, Ruby Nell Brannon of North Little Rock, Ark.; grandchildren and spouses, Chad and Michelle Roberts, Kirstin and Albert Hesskew, Curtis Moritz, Robert Moritz and Jeremy Stanton; great-grandchildren, Abbey Roberts, Ryan Roberts, Kaleb Hesskew and Arin Hesskew.

Pallbearers were Russell Roberts, Wayne Allen, Ray Reed, Gene Frankum, Bill Kirkpatrick, James, Collins, and Chris Skinner.

Honorary pallbearers were his many fellow pastors and friends.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the Texas Baptist Encampment, P.O. Box 1265, Palacios, TX 77465; or First Baptist Church, 507 N. Fulton, Wharton, TX 77488.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Adolph Wobbe

Adolph A. Wobbe, age 87, of Pledger died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, in Wharton following an extended illness. He was born on Oct. 3, 1918, in Nada, the son of the late Henry Wobbe and Elizabeth Boenisch Wobbe.

Mr. Wobbe had been a resident of Pledger since 1978 and was a former resident of Wharton and New Gulf. He married Margaret Valencia Baca on June 25, 1946, in Wharton. Mr. Wobbe was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boling. Mr. Wobbe worked with Texas Gulf Sulphur Company for 32 years was a supervisor in the machine shop for four years before his retirement in 1984. He was also preceded in death by a brother Henry Wobbe in 1967.

A rosary was held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Carlos Lynch officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with military graveside honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Wobbe of Pledger; sons and daughter-in-law, Bernie and Louise Wobbe of Richmond and Lloyd Wobbe of Pledger; sister, Ione Brown of Iago; grandchildren, Ryan Wobbe, Leann Wobbe, Michael Wobbe, Michelle Wobbe and Trina Wobbe.

Pallbearers were John Ellis, Henry Brown, Raymond Brown, Frank Ellis, Ryan Wobbe and Henry Wobbe.

Honorary Pallbearers were Joe Marshall, Tommy Hanks, Earl Harrell, Slim Harnden and Jamie Pugh.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 2011 Briar Lane, Wharton, TX 77488.

Kenneth Bell

Kenneth G. Bell, 68, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005. He is survived by his children, Kenneth R. Bell of Alpharetta, Ga., Alison Lewis and husband, Mark of Centennial, Colo., Stephen G. Bell and wife, Shannon of Albuquerque, N.M., and Derek Bell of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandchildren, Lexi Lewis and Bonnie Bell; brother, Curtis R. Bell and wife Charlsie of Conroe; sister, Betty Bell Andrews of North Zulch. Mr. Bell was preceded in death by his wife Sally Jo Brumbelow Bell.

He graduated from Sam Houston State University with a degree in physics. Mr. Bell retired from the U.S. Navy at the rank of lieutenant commander. He recently retired from a long career as a senior explosives research scientist. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and especially spending time with his family.

Visitation was held on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005 from 5 to 7:00 p.m. at Garmany and Carden Funeral Directors in Rosenberg.
Burial was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at Brown-Beard Cemetery in Fort Bend County.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to The Salvation Army, 1500 Austin, Houston, TX 77002.
