Leandro Lopez

Leandro Lopez, age 46, of Hungerford died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at his home following an extended illness. He was born on March 23, 1959, in Union de San Antonio, Jalisco, Mexico, to Jacinto Lopez and the late Anacleta Rivera Lopez.

Mr. Lopez had been a resident of Hungerford for the past 28 years and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton. He married Lucy Maria Ramos on April 30, 1988, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Mr. Lopez worked with the Koonce and Cullers families on the J.D. Hudgins Ranch for the past 28 years. He was also a certified welder and owned his own shop in Hungerford. Mr. Lopez was not only a loving husband and father to his family, but also a respected member of the community. His contributions to organizations such as the Boling FFA, Boling Bullshooters, Wharton County Youth Fair, J.D. Hudgins Ranch and the town of Hungerford will forever more be cherished and sadly missed.

A rosary was recited on Thursday evening, Dec. 8, 2005, at 7 p.m. at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 2005, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in the St. John’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Hungerford.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy Lopez of Hungerford; daughter, Karina Lopez of Hungerford; sons, Marlon Lopez and Eduardo Lopez, both of Hungerford; father, Jacinto Lopez of Union de San Antonio, Jalisco, Mexico; sisters, Theresa Lopez, Annastasia Lopez, Anna Maria Lopez, Sylvina Lopez and Maria Dolores Lopez, all of Mexico; brothers, Trinidad Lopez and Elias Lopez, both of Mexico, and Pedro Lopez of Purvis, Miss.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers were Pedro Lopez, Ramiro Rivera, Modesto Martinez, Efrain Martinez, Porfirio Martinez and Apolinar Lopez.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to be sent to The Leandro Lopez Family Trust, c/o First National Bank of Eagle Lake, Attn.: James Vincek, P.O. Box 460, East Bernard, TX 77435.

Funeral Services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Lou Ann Malone

Lou Ann Baugh Malone, age 67, of Pledger, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born on Oct. 1, 1938, in San Angelo, the daughter of the late Robert D. Baugh and Irene Buford Baugh.

Mrs. Malone moved to Boling as a teenager and was a 1956 graduate of Boling High School. She moved to Pledger in 1956 after her marriage to Melton Marion Malone on July 1, 1956. He preceded her in death on July 14, 1998. Mrs. Malone was a self-employed rancher and she and her late husband were owners of the Malone Grocery, Malone Feed Store and Malone Liquor Store in Pledger. Mrs. Malone retired in 2003. She was Catholic by faith and a former member of the Home Demonstration Club in Pledger and the Quilting Guild in Bay City.

Private family services were held Thursday afternoon at the Wharton Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Lennard officiating. Cremation followed in Evergreen Crematory.

Survivors include her daughters, Carol Roberts of San Antonio and Dana Kresta and husband, Terry of Seguin; sons, Don Malone and wife, Marcia of Pledger and David Malone and wife, Judy of Ashwood; special friend and companion, Thomas Gray of Pledger; sister, Carolyn Garcia of Houston; sister-in-law, Betty Mae Burger of Sealy; brothers, Robert Baugh Jr. of Palestine, Marvin Frank Crockett of Missouri and Eddie Owens of Rockdale; grandchildren, Terri Lynn Martinez, Beau Malone, Benjamin Malone, Crystal Gomes, Cristy McGaughey, Brandon Roberts, Joy Malone, Mark Kresta, Justin Revis and Dean Malone; 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. She was also preceded in death by her step-mother, Virginia S. Baugh.
Honorary pallbearers were Pete Kocurek, Gary Kocurek and Glenn Kocurek.

Willie McQueen

Funeral services for Willie Daniel McQueen Jr., 36, of Pearland, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Rosenberg with Rev. L.C. Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. McQueen died Dec. 5, 2005, at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. He was born Aug. 7, 1969, in Wharton to Willie Daniel and Martha Humphrey McQueen.

He was a police officer for the city of Rosenberg.

Survivors include his parents, Willie Daniel and Martha Humphrey McQueen of Beasley; wife, Charlexia Taylor McQueen of Pearland; daughter, Alexandria McQueen of Pearland; brother, William McQueen of Houston; and sisters, Mardara Riley of Houston and Baundretta Lott of Beasley.

Jack Brinlee

Jack Eugene Brinlee was born Feb. 25, 1928, in Sherman. He was predeceased by his parents, John Edmond and Lucy Ella Hix Brinlee; five sisters and one brother.

Mr. Brinlee is survived by his wife, Honour “Phil” Brinlee, who he married on May 19, 1962 in Wichita Falls, and daughters, Ann Mary Vignes and Jacqueline Mary Brinlee, all of Wharton; granddaughters, Olivia and Hannah Rath and Amanda Vignes; numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was reared in Sherman and was a graduate of Sherman High School. At 17, with his parents permission, he joined the U.S. Army Air Force and served for 26 years, retiring in 1973 as master sergeant. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He returned to Sherman and attained an associate’s degree at Grayson County Community College. Mr. Brinlee moved the family to Wharton in 1977 and taught at the Wharton County Junior College as department head of the Automotive Department for 18 years until his retirement in 1995. While in Wharton, he purchased four acres, built a home, two barns, square danced, raised and showed Arabian horses. During retirement Mr. Brinlee and wife, Phil, traveled extensively to Alaska and throughout the United States. They attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Funeral services will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with The Reverend Raymond Jackson and The Reverend Don Storey officiating.

Graveside services and interment will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at the Bethany Cemetery near Sherman, with The Reverend Lester Skelly and The Reverend Andy Turner officiating. Friends may call for visitation from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Honorary pallbearers are Alfred Vignes, Mark Rath and Ruben Hernandez.

Wonderful, loving and happy memories are what will sustain the Brinlee family now with this deep loss of Mr. Brinlee. He was such as loving, caring, giving, compassionate man, with a sweet and caring disposition. Mr. Brinlee always had a smile on his face and never met a stranger. He is truly beloved by his family and all who knew him.

The Brinlee family would like to thank Hospice Support, Inc. for all of their help and support during this trying time.

Aletha Little

Funeral services for Sarah Aletha Sane Little, 94, of Bryan, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at Covenant Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Elton and Rev. Joe Gossett officiating. The interment will precede the service at the College Station City Cemetery at 10 a.m. There will be a viewing of Mrs. Little on Dec. 14 from 5 to 6 p.m., and a visitation with the family from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hillier Funeral Home.

Mrs. Little died at her home in the Saint Joseph Manor on Dec. 11, 2005. She was born on Sept. 19, 1911, in Campobello, S.C.

She graduated from Ashville Teaching College with a bachelors of science degree and then from James Walker Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, N.C., with a degree as a registered nurse. She met R.D. “Jim” Little while teaching nursing in Wichita Falls. They moved to Wharton in 1949.

Mrs. Little was active in civic activities in Wharton. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Wharton, and a scout troop leader for 17 years. Her interest included sewing, knitting, reading and the pleasure and company of many good friends. Aletha will be remembered mostly for developing meaningful, lifelong friendships and her ability to adapt to each new situation that life presented.

Aletha is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. R.D. Little and son, Jim David “Bo” Little, formerly of New York City. Survivors include daughters Dr. Sara Little of Manassas, Va., and Nina Wright and son-in-law Dr. Mark Wright and granddaughters, Wendy and Sally Wright, all of Bryan.

Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Dial Martin, Dr. Frank Mann, Frank Mann III, Garland Mann, Russell Baird, Brant Baird, Gregory Baird, Dr. John Mehaffrey and John Michael Mehaffrey.

In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to: First Presbyterian Church in Wharton, Attention: Memorial Garden, 1602 John Knox, Wharton, TX 77488; or Covenant Presbyterian Church, 220 Rockprairie, College Station, TX 77845.

Grace Nelson

Grace Marie Hill Nelson passed away on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, in Wharton after a short illness. She went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Mrs. Nelson was born on Feb. 28, 1912, in Thompsonville, the daughter of the late Leander Harold Hill and Ophelia Blundell Hill.

Mrs. Nelson was a very kind, loving, and generous person. She had a huge heart and was always ready to help anyone in need. Mrs. Nelson came to Boling on the 30th day of November 1930 to help her older sister, Virgie Hill Jones, take care of Virgie’s daughter, Ellie, when Virgie’s husband was killed in a drilling rig accident near Wharton. She indeed lived an exemplary life. Mrs. Nelson was a member of numerous social and religious organizations like First Baptist Church of Boling, which she was one of few living charter members, The Philomathians, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 58 years. Her fondest memories were of living and rearing her two sons in the company town of Newgulf, a very special place to grow up.

She always had an indomitable spirit. Mrs. Nelson radiated sunshine everywhere she went and was always there for people in times of sorrow. She led a storied life as well. After Prohibition, she served the first mug of beer in Boling by sliding it down the bar in the old “Green Lantern Cafe”. Mrs. Nelson also told of serving Bonnie and Clyde at the same establishment. She will be surely missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 13, 2005, at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Skip Holman officiating. Interment followed in the Wharton City Cemetery.

Survivors include her son, Steve Wayne Nelson of Boling; sister, Ella Gardner of Texas City; brother, Norman D. Hill of Boling; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, D.O. “Dunk” Nelson on March 16, 1983; son, Don Barkley Nelson on March 21, 1986; sisters, Virgie Hill Farley and Agnes Vickery Young; and brothers, Walter Lee Hill, Preston R. Hill and Alton Vickery.

Pallbearers were Larry Hill, Gary Hill, Dean Hill, Wayne Cox, Lynn Joyce and Frank Hill.

Ernest Priem

Ernest Harold Priem, age 74, of Wharton, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005, in Wharton. He was born on Nov. 19, 1931, in Pflugerville, the son of the late Ernest A. Priem and Marie Montgomery Priem.

Mr. Priem was a graduate of San Marcos High School and later attended Texas A&M University Cotton Classing School. He married Frances Johnson on Feb. 14, 1953, in Sinton. Mr. Priem was a former resident of Brenham and New Braunfels prior to moving to Wharton in 1969. He was employed as a cotton buyer for numerous companies including the Sorrel and Heyne Cotton Company before becoming co-owner of Caney Valley Cotton Company in Wharton until his retirement in 1981. Since retirement, Mr. Priem has stayed very busy as a self-employed rancher, raising cattle and horses. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Wharton. Mr. Priem enjoyed fishing, riding his horses and spending time with family and friends.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, at Wharton Funeral Home with The Reverend Mack Mathis officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Priem of Wharton; daughter, Charlene Frances Leopold and husband, Don, of Nada; son, Alan Priem and wife, Teresa, of Wharton; sister, Norma Moss and husband, Harlan, of New Braunfels; grandchildren, Justin Rodgers and wife, Tiffany, of Eagle Lake, Kurt Rodgers and fiancé, Jennifer Wright, of Eagle Lake, Lacey Priem and fiancée, William Wilcox, of Wharton and Matt Priem of Wharton.
Pallbearers are Jimmy Ermis, Daryl Fromme, Michael Moss, Steve Lipsey, Richard Zahn and Wayne Hacker.

Honorary pallbearers are his numerous friends and coffee shop buddies.

Arthur Ray

Funeral services for Arthur James Ray will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church in Needville with pastor A.L. Edwards and Rev. John Pyles officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery in Hungerford.

A wake service will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Gooden Funeral Home in Rosenberg.

Mr. Ray died Dec. 12, 2005.

James Washington

Funeral services for James Leonard Washington, 39, of Spanish Camp community will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Camp Zion-Rising Star Baptist Church with Rev. C. Owens officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Washington died Dec. 11, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Oct. 28, 1966, in Wharton to Tony and Vera Williams Phynon.

Survivors include parents, Tony and Vera Williams Phynon; son, Landon Washington of Wharton; daughter, Jetta Washington of Wharton; brothers, Thomas Washington of Missouri City, Curtis Washington and Charles Washington, both of Wharton, and Demetris Washington of San Diego, Calif.

Charles Altenburg

Funeral services for Charles R. “Buba” Altenburg, 73, of Boling, were held Friday at Iago Federated Church with Mickey Reynolds officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Altenburg died Dec. 26, 2005, in Wharton. He was born Nov. 18, 1932, in Newgulf, the second son of Waymond Henry Altenburg Sr. and Ada Viola Whitaker Altenburg.

He was a 1951 graduate of Liberty High School and received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Sam Houston State University. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. Mr. Altenburg married Jo Rene Graves on May 13, 1972, in Liberty. He was a former resident of Liberty and Newgulf before moving to Boling in 1958.
Mr. Altenburg worked in the Accounts Payable Department of Texas Gulf Sulphur for 35 years until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1994.

He was a member of Iago Federated Church and was a former member of Newgulf Baptist Church where he served as treasurer for many years. Mr. Altenburg was a SHARE volunteer and was a member of the Boling Lions Club where he had served as president, vice-president, treasurer, Tail Twister and as a member of the board of directors.

Survivors include wife, Jo Rene Altenburg of Boling; daughter, Jada Seppanen and husband, Travis, of Huntsville; son, Charles R. Altenburg Jr. of Burr; sister, Joann Gloff and husband, Dr. Donald Gloff, of Clifton; brother, Waymond Altenburg Jr. and wife, Corky, of Wharton; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Clark Flournoy

On Wednesday evening, Dec. 21, 2005, Clark Elder Flournoy died peacefully at Kindred Hospital in Houston surrounded by his beloved family.

Mr. Flournoy was born in Ganado on Jan. 19, 1927, the first of two sons born to Daniel and Elizabeth Flournoy.

He attended public schools in El Campo. After high school graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Returning home he married his local sweetheart, Margaret Jane Walters of Wharton. They moved to Lake Jackson in 1948 where Mr. Flournoy launched a long successful career of 41 years in sales with Allstate Insurance Company. For many years he was the only Allstate agent for Brazoria County, fostering lifelong friendships with many clients.
He was a devoted member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church where he actively participated in the ministries of St. Vincent de Paul charity and St. Michael’s Men’s Retreat group, where he served as captain.

Sports were his passion. His athletic giftedness as a star quarterback tagged him with the nickname “Fleetfoot” in honor of his shifty, swift movements on the football field. The local tennis community will remember his vitality and agility while competing on the court.

Mr. Flournoy cherished family and fervently worked to shape strong ties. He encouraged the diverse interests of his children and grandchildren with pride and enthusiasm. His positive spirit, optimistic nature, and understanding heart leave a rich legacy to all who were fortunate enough to know him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Maurice Flournoy.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret Flournoy; his sons and their wives, Randy and Linda Flournoy of Houston and Scott and Joan Flournoy of Angleton; his daughter and her husband, Gale and Tom Butler of Lake Jackson; and his daughter, Marcia Flournoy of Lake Jackson. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Shawn Flournoy of Gaithersburg, Md., Keith Flournoy of Houston, Sabrina Flournoy of Houston, Michelle Butler of Houston and David Butler of Austin, Brant Smith of Angleton, Meagan Flournoy of Angleton; step-mother, Mary Ann Flournoy of Seadrift; sister-in-law, Joyce Eveld of Houston; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Monsignor Leo Wleczyk officiating.

Pallbearers were grandchildren and nephews Shawn Flournoy, Keith Flournoy, David Butler, Brant Smith, Gary Walters, Charles Walters, Mark Eveld and David Eveld.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 100 Oak Drive South, Lake Jackson, TX, 77566. Phone (979) 297-3041.

Arrangements were under the direction of Lakewood Funeral Chapel in Lake Jackson.
