Aurelio Rodriguez

Funeral services for Aurelio Garcia Rodriguez Sr., 83, of Wharton, were held Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Wednesday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Rodriguez died Jan. 1, 2006, in a Wharton hospital. He was born on Nov. 12, 1922, in Mexico City, D.F., Mexico, the son of the late Maximo R. Rodriguez Sr. and Estefana Garcia Rodriguez.

He was a former longtime resident of Egypt before moving to Wharton in 1984. Mr. Rodriguez was employed as a ranch laborer for Duncan Brothers Ranch in Egypt until his retirement. He married Evangelina Mejorado in October of 1965 in Wharton. Mr. Rodriguez was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Survivors include wife, Eva Rodriguez of Wharton; daughters, Janie McLain and husband, Aaron, of El Campo and Stephanie Bear and husband, Steven, of Boling; sons, Demencio Rodriguez and wife, Martha, of Wharton, Aurelio Rodriguez Jr. and wife, Destiny, of Wharton and Richard Rodriguez and wife, Amy, of Wharton; sisters, Petra Briones and husband, Joe, Mercedes Moreno and husband, Mike, and Susie Reyes and husband, Refugio, all of Houston; brothers, Nicholas Rodriguez and wife, Catalina, Bruno Rodriguez and wife, M.A. Ernestina, Gus Rodriguez and wife, Maria Del Refugio, and Maximo Rodriguez Jr. and wife, Carmela, all of Houston; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sisters, Cirilda Rodriguez, Mary Rodriguez and Guadalupe Tobar.

Aurelio Rodriguez

Funeral services are pending for Aurelio Garcia Rodriguez Sr., 83, of Wharton, at Wharton Funeral Home. Mr. Rodriguez died Jan. 1, 2006, in a Wharton hospital.

Kathleen Adcock

Kathleen Dempsey “Kay” Adcock, born on July 21, 1933, in Wharton, passed away on Dec. 30, 2005, at the age of 72.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 50 years, Willie J. “Sonny” Adcock Jr.; sons and daughters-in-law, Willie J. and Anna Adcock III, Richard D. and Donna Adcock, David J. Adcock and friend Ray Bomer; grandchildren, Bridget, Lacey, Sarah, Tori, Ryan and Philip Adcock and many relatives and friends.
Visitation was held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Trevino Funeral Home in San Antonio.

A chapel service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Trevino Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Bexar Cemetery in Somerset.

Services are under the direction of Trevino Funeral Home.

George Butler

Funeral services for George Lee Butler, 66, of Wharton, will be held Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. L.C. Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Butler died Dec. 29, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Jan. 23, 1939, in Wharton to L.V. and Evelyn Green Butler.

Survivors include wife, Felicia Renee Jenkins Butler of Richmond; daughter, Andre Griggs of Houston; brother, Sammie Allen of Louisville, Ky.; sisters, Florence Allen and Cynthia Williams, both of Wharton, and Durvine Harris; three grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Mary Collins

Funeral services for Mary Ann Hunt Collins, 63, of Houston, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Houston. Burial will be in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Houston. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Andrews United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Collins died Dec. 28, 2005, at Northwest Memorial Hospital. She was born June 6, 1942, in Opelousas, La., to Mack Hunt and Leager Washington.
She was a homemaker.

Survivors include husband, Robert James Collins; daughters, Kimberly Yvonne Collins Payne, Angel Sparks, Sheila Wyatt and Joyce Bostic; sons, David Orlando Collins, Robert J. Collins Jr. and Darrell James Collins; siblings, Herman Hunt, Sherman Hunt, William Hunt and Shirley Wilder; and 15 grandchildren.

Lillian Heard

Funeral services for Lillian Ruth Heard, 78, of New Braunfels and formerly of Wharton, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Scilla Baptist Church with Rev. Carl Spradley officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Heard died Dec. 31, 2005, at her home in New Braunfels. She was born Oct. 1, 1927, in Wharton to George and Callie Ray White Sr.

She worked for many years as a cook for Wharton Country Club and for Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Helms, who owned Helms Lumber Company.

Survivors include daughter, Callie Simon of New Braunfels; sons and daughters-in-law, W.J. and Bobbie White, George and Ruby White Jr., Alex and Estella White and Leroy and Marilyn White, all of Houston, and Floyd White of Wharton; sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Armstrong, Rosa Bell and James Ward, all of Wharton, Bernice Calhoun of San Diego, Calif., and Eliza Bailey of Houston; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

Crescencio Llanes

Funeral services for Crescencio N. Llanes Sr., 73, of Wharton, were held Saturday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary was held Friday at WhartonFuneral Home.

Mr. Llanes died Dec. 28, 2005, in a Wharton hospital following a brief illness. He was born on April 19, 1932, in Yorktown, the son of the late Santiago Llanes and Francisca Nunes Llanes.

He had been a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Mr. Llanes married Ramona Salazar on Feb. 18, 1950, in Wharton and she preceded him in death on Nov. 15, 2005.

He was also preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. He worked as a maintenance mechanic for W-K-M Cooper Industries in Richmond for 15 years. He also worked as a farmer for many years.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Isabel Llanes of Richmond, Carmen and Marcus Longoria, Minnie and Richard Gomez, Mary and Henry Longoria, Juanita and Alfredo Garza and Lori and Eloy Enriquez, all of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe Rudy and Martha Llanes of Brazoria, Chris and Maria Llanes and Michael and Sharon Llanes, all of Wharton; sister, Rosie Hattaway of Alabama; brothers, Amador Llanes of Bloomington, Valerio Llanes and Sixto Llanes, both of Wharton, Roy Llanes of Houston and Primo Llanes of El Campo; 22 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Our Lady of Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Avenue, Wharton, TX 77488.

Joanne London

Funeral services for Joanne London, 73, of West Columbia, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Revelation Missionary Baptist Church in Anchor. Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery in Pearland.

Ms. London died Jan. 1, 2006, in Sweeny Hospital. She was born Sept. 11, 1932, in Raeford, N.C., to Tom and Ora Jane Brunson.

She was a retired caregiver.

Survivors include daughters, Linda Hamilton, Veronica London, Delores London and Kim Hughes; sons, James McNeil, Robert London, John London, Joel London, Ronell London, Donell London and Tim London; brother, Willie Brunson; 47 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Esther Chambliss

Following cremation, memorial services for Esther Ruth Chambliss, 87, of Humble and formerly of Wharton, will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Mack Mathis officiating.

Mrs. Chambliss died Jan. 10, 2006, in Humble. She was born on June 7, 1918, in Wichita Falls, the daughter of the late Emil Gensler and Emily Summer Gensler.

She was a resident of Wharton from 1938 until 2001 when she moved to Humble. Mrs. Chambliss was employed as a private duty nurse, having worked at Gulf Coast Medical Center, Rugeley-Blasingame Clinic, Matagorda General Hospital and Polly Ryon Hospital until her retirement. She married Earl Houston Chambliss on April 5, 1947, in Bay City.
He preceded her in death in 1968. Mrs. Chambliss was a member of First Baptist Church in Wharton.

Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Sam C. and Pam Gensler of Humble and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to: First Baptist Church, 507 N. Fulton, Wharton, TX 77488; or a charity of personal choice.

Deloris McCain

Deloris Jean Taylor McCain, age 65, of East Bernard, died Tuesday Jan. 10, 2006, in Houston. She was born on Dec. 27, 1940, in Jourdanton, daughter of the late James Taylor and Johnnie Bell Howard Taylor.

Mrs. McCain was reared in Jourdanton and was a 1959 graduate of Jourdanton High School. She married Kenneth Ray McCain Sr. on Feb. 5, 1961, in Seguin and he preceded her in death on June 9, 2004. Mrs. McCain was a 42-year resident of East Bernard, a homemaker, and a member of the First Baptist Church of East Bernard. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed watching all of her grandchildren’s sporting events and was a devoted Dallas Cowboy and San Antonio Spur Fan.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at First Baptist Church in East Bernard with the Reverend Duane Mayberry officiating. Interment followed in the East Bernard Methodist Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughters, Sharon Breedlove and husband, Fate Jr., of East Bernard and Michelle Ann Gajewsky and husband, Jeff, of East Bernard; son, Kenneth Ray McCain Jr. and wife, Karen, of East Bernard; step-mother, Billie Nell Taylor of Jourdanton; half-brother, Tim Taylor of Jourdanton; grandchildren, Ashley Breedlove, Justin Breedlove, Scarlett McCain, Haley Gajewsky and Hannah Gajewsky.

Her family members served as pallbearers.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Mallie Miska

Funeral services for Mallie Francis Miska, 96, of Wharton, will be held 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Vrana and Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Miska died Jan. 11, 2006, in New Braunfels. She was born on April 8, 1909 in Moulton, daughter of the late Joe Stephen Zapalac and Francisca Knebel Zapalac.

She married Joe Steve Miska on Nov. 8, 1932, in Holman. He preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 1992. Mrs. Miska was a homemaker and a 58-year resident of Wharton. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters and the Altar Society.

Survivors include her daughters, Johnnie Mae Davidek and husband, Tom, of New Braunfels and Tracy Wolff and husband, Nelson, of San Antonio; sons, Raymond Miska and wife, Adeline, of Wharton and Larry Miska and wife, Margaret, of San Antonio; sister, Martha Hlozek of Houston; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Gaylan Segrest

Gaylan Wade Segrest, age 55, of Wharton and East Bernard, died Monday Jan. 9, 2006, in Wharton. He was born on Feb. 4, 1950. in Fort Worth, the son of Guy Walker Segrest and Dorothy Lee Graham Segrest.

Mr. Segrest moved to Wharton as a young child and was a 1968 graduate of Wharton High School. He later attended Wharton County Junior College and received his bachelors degree in business administration with a minor in real estate from Southwest Texas State University. Mr. Segrest married Dianne Vaclavik on May 21, 1971, in Wharton. He was the founder and owner of numerous businesses including, Big G Auto Sales, Big G Auto Glass in Wharton, Bay City and Clute, Big G Auto Shop, 3 G’s Go Kart Tract and Big G Properties, a rental and investment properties company in and around Wharton.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Wharton Chamber of Commerce, National Glass Association and the Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standard Council. Mr. Segrest was an avid supporter of Wharton Little League, Wharton Babe Ruth League and East Bernard Athletics. He was proud to be able to establish the Big G Auto Glass Scholarship Fund for graduating Seniors of East Bernard High School and will always be remembered for his charitable contributions to numerous area charities and organizations.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Kris Segrest and Rev. Mack Mathis officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Dianne Segrest of East Bernard; daughter, Ginger Wyn Segrest of East Bernard; sons, Geremy Wade Segrest of East Bernard and Gabe Winston Segrest of East Bernard; mother, Dorothy Segrest of Wharton; brothers, Gary Segrest and wife Jan of Hot Springs, Ark., G.W. “Birdie” Segrest and wife, Belinda of Sherman; and Grayson West Segrest and Mariel Econg of Houston; one grandson; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mildred and Robert Johnson of Hungerford and Virginia and Dom Mladenka of San Antonio; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Pallbearers were Brian Johnson, Robert Johnson, Richard Johnson, Tony Merta, Stephen Alexander and Jerry Galvan.
Honorary pallbearers were all his former Little League players he had the privilege of coaching and his lifelong friends and business associates.

Bonnie Zernack

Bonnie May Zernack went to her eternal rest on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, amongst her friends, great-niece Kem Ford and the loving caregivers at Hearthstone Assisted Living in Wharton, where she had resided since August of 2005.

Mrs. Zernack was born at home between Boling and Newgulf to John and Ethel Fechtner on Feb. 13, 1924. She married 1st Lt. James G. Ater in 1942 and left Texas with her husband and three sons in 1956. She lived and worked in Colorado, California and Idaho before returning to her beloved Texas in the early 1970s.
She married Clarence Zernack and lived with him until his death in Angleton, finally returning to Boling to be near her loving sister, Johnnie Dee Mullins. There she remained in “Aunt Bonnie’s Cottage” that had been restored for her use on the Mullins’ ranch by her loving nieces, Carol Mullins Rolf and Margaret Ann Mullins Willrich and their families.
She remained there amongst her loving nieces and nephews, under the care of Gus and Irene Mullins until August of 2005 when her health required her to go to Hearthstone in Wharton.

Passing before her were her eldest son, Robert K. Ater of Maryland; her brother, Robert Fechtner; her two sisters, Norma Lee and Johnnie Dee; mother-in-law, Elanor Jane Sterling Ater; and her nieces, Carol Mullins Rolf and Margaret Ann Mullins Willrich.

Surviving are her two sons and their families: Gail S. Ater, his former wife Victoria Roper and their daughter Ellie Roper-Ater; Gail’s daughter Ashley Kranov and husband Yanko and their children Henry Apgar-Ater and Alexander Kranov; Derrick and Tisa Ater of Asotin, Wash., and their children Deidre and Austen.

Mrs. Zernak leaves behind, her loving nephew and his wife, Gus and Irene Mullins of Boling; her niece, Dian Mullins-Floyd and husband Michael Floyd of Tyler; nephews, Dick and Dean Mullins of Houston; and nephews by marriage, Alvin Rolf and George Willrich of Boling; 16 very special great-nieces and great-nephews and 24 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. They will all miss “Aunt Bonnie.”

By her request, there will be no formal memorial service. She asked that you celebrate her life by living yours to the fullest every day. “If you’re going to have a cookie – Have a Cookie!”
