Gaylan Wade Segrest

Gaylan Wade Segrest, age 55 of Wharton and East Bernard, died Monday, January 9, 2006 in Wharton. He was born on February 4, 1950 in Fort Worth, Texas, the son of Guy Walker Segrest and Dorothy Lee Graham Segrest.

Gaylan moved to Wharton as a young child and was a 1968 graduate of Wharton High School. He later attended Wharton County Junior College and received his bachelors degree in Business Administration with a minor in Real Estate from Southwest Texas State University. He married Dianne Vaclavik on May 21, 1971, in Wharton.
Gaylan was the founder and owner of numerous businesses including, Big G Auto Sales; Big G Auto Glass in Wharton, Bay City and Clute; Big G Auto Shop; 3 G’s Go Kart Tract and Big G Properties, a rental and investment properties company in and around Wharton.

Gaylan was a member of First Baptist Church, Wharton Chamber of Commerce, National Glass Association and the Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standard Council. He was an avid supporter of Wharton Little League, Wharton Babe Ruth League and East Bernard Athletics. He was proud to be able to establish the Big G Auto Glass Scholarship Fund for graduating seniors of East Bernard High School and will always be remembered for his charitable contributions to numerous area charities and organizations.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 13, 2006 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Kris Segrest and Rev. Mack Mathis officiating. Interment follows in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne Segrest of East Bernard; daughter, Ginger Wyn Segrest of East Bernard; sons, Geremy Wade Segrest and Gabe Winston Segrest of East Bernard; mother, Dorothy Segrest of Wharton; brothers, Gary Segrest and wife Jan, of Hot Springs, Ark., G.W. “Birdie” Segrest and wife, Belinda of Sherman, Texas and Grayson West Segrest and Mariel Econg of Houston; one grandson; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mildred and Robert Johnson of Hungerford and Virginia and Dom Mladenka of San Antonio; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Pallbearers are Brian Johnson, Robert Johnson, Richard Johnson, Tony Merta, Stephen Alexander and Jerry Galvan.
Honorary pallbearers are all his former Little League players he had the privilege of coaching and his life long friends and business associates.

Marjorie Duyka

Marjorie Vaughan Duyka, age 82, of Bellaire and a former longtime resident of Wharton, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, in a Houston assisted living center following a brief illness. She was born on Sept. 10, 1923, in Waelder, the daughter of the late Collis Hart Vaughan Sr. and Willie Dee Johnson Vaughan.

Mrs. Duyka was a resident of Wharton since 1978 until moving to Bellaire three years ago. She worked as an office manager for McKesson Chemical Company in Beaumont prior to moving to Wharton. Mrs. Duyka married Louis Henry Duyka on March 6, 1943, in Wharton and he preceded her in death on Nov. 15, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Collis H. Vaughan Jr. and a grandson, Michael Donovan Duyka. Mrs. Duyka was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wharton and was a former member of the Rebecca Lodge in Beaumont.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Mack Mathis officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Donna Kathryn and Taz Thomas of Bellaire; son, Donald Louis Duyka of Missouri City; granddaughters, Erin Duyka and Catherine Duyka.

Pallbearers were Michael Martin, Ben Midulla, Bill Ballard, Roger Haynes, John Hannan and Ernie Ondrias.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to a charity of personal choice.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Nicolas Garcia

Funeral services for Nicolas G. Garcia, 69, of Wharton, were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton. A rosary was recited Monday at the Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Garcia died Jan. 28, 2006, in a Sugar Land hospital following an extended illness. He was born on Oct. 7, 1936, in Lyford, the son of the late Aurelio Garcia and Juanita Gonzales Garcia.

He had been a resident of Wharton since 1968 and was a former resident of Corpus Christi. He was a truck driver with H-E-B Grocery for 22 years until his retirement in 1983. He went to work for Zarsky Lumber Company in Wharton as a clerk and retired in 1995.

He married Berta Cantu on Oct. 29, 1961, in Corpus Christi. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the VFW in Wharton. Mr. Garcia was also a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Guadalupe Garcia and Roberto Garcia.

Survivors include his wife, Berta Garcia of Wharton; daughters, Palmira Garcia and Velma Garcia, both of Richmond, Imelda Garcia of Wharton and Chriselda Simmons of Round Rock; son, Nicolas Garcia of Houston; and two grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family request memorials to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Avenue, Wharton, TX 77488; or The American Diabetes Association, 2400 Augusta Drive, Suite 175, Houston, TX 77057 - 4989.

James Ivy

James J. Ivy Jr., 78, of El Campo, died Jan. 29, 2006, after and extended illness. He was born Feb. 10, 1927, in Gillette to James J. and Rebecca Ivy.

His family moved to Wharton in 1929. He grew up and lived most of his life in Wharton County with a span from 1968 to 1986 in Canyon Lake, Comal County. Most of his young life was spent working with his family in the dairy business in Wharton and Glen Flora. In May of 1945, at the age of 18, he joined the U.S. Army. Before being honorably discharged on Feb. 19, 1953, with the rank of sergeant first class, his tour of duty included Korea, Washington, Arkansas, Alaska and was completed at Fort Hood. He returned to Wharton where he owned and operated a service station and beverage store. In 1956 he began a life of public service which included the El Campo Police Department, El Campo Post Office, Wharton Sheriff’s Department, Comal County Sheriff’s Department and Comal County Constable Precinct 4, before retiring in 1997 at the age of 70.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Joyce Ann Hunt Ivy of El Campo; daughter, Vickie Ann Smith and husband, Paul Holub, of Glen Flora; granddaughters, Debbie D. Krenek and Lisa Marie Machen, both of Glen Flora; sister, Dorene Turner of Spring; brother, Clarence Ivy and wife, Mickie Ivy, of El Campo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, James J. Ivy Sr., and mother, Rebecca Ann Cleveland Ivy; brother, Robert Doyle Ivy; sisters, Joyce Nickolyn and Eunice Stewart; niece, Shirley Dees; and numerous nephews and friends.
Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Wheeler Funeral Home, 612 W. Jackson, El Campo.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Don A. Storey Sr., chaplain for Hospice Support Care in El Campo officiating.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Support, Inc., P.O. Box 1417, El Campo, TX 77437.

Marlon Matthews

Rev. Marlon E. Matthews, pastor of New Faith Church and owner/director of Matthews Funeral Home graduated to his heavenly rest on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006.

Pastor Matthews was an excellent businessman and sincerely devoted husband, father, pastor, son and brother.

Moving to Wharton in 1987 his first pastorate was at Prairie Grove and he has previously served as interim pastor at Large Concord.

With a compassionate desire and motivation beyond measure, in the year of 1990, he pioneered New Faith Church located on N. Walnut Street. Though the church was initially temporarily housed in two other locations, in 1997 land was donated and a new building was built. What began as just a dream in the heart of a very daring young man, is now a strong and vibrant church. New Faith Church is also the home of Toddlers of Faith, a fully operating daycare which is dedicated to loving, training and serving toddlers in the Wharton area.

He also served as a musician for several churches in Matagorda, Wharton and Harris counties. Pastor Matthews served in the funeral home industry for 24 years working in Harris, Wharton, Matagorda and Colorado counties.

With great respect for and a striking desire to honor the family name, he established Matthews Funeral Home in 1987. It was first located on Fulton Street and is now located on East Emily.
With much fortitude and many days of extended work hours, Rev. Matthews never shirked at the hard work that was required to build a successful business.

Matthews Funeral Home is a great asset to the City of Wharton and has very graciously served the city and surrounding areas and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Pastor Matthews is survived by a loving and dedicated wife, Felicia Ford Matthews; two daughters who were the apple of their Daddy’s eye, Jarielle and Marlicia; one son, who cherished his father, Temauj; a very devoted mother, Donna Woods; father, O.S. Grant; father-in-law, Leroy Ford Jr.; grandmother, Jessie Edison; two sisters, Rev. Bonita Ford and spouse Rev. Walter Ford Sr. and Ertha Woods; oldest brother, Freeman Woods; youngest brother and best friend, Morris Woods and spouse Tracy Woods; one great-great-aunt, Faye Lewis; the New Faith Church family; five nephews and nieces, including Walter who he raised; and extended family far to numerous to name.

The legacy of Pastor Matthews will continue for generations to come.

Celebration services will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 4, at New Faith Church located at 2412 N. Walnut Street.

Walter Ford

Funeral services for Walter Ford Jr. will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. A.J. Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery in Hungerford.

Mrs. Ford died Aug. 7, 2004, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Oct. 12, 1958, in Wharton to Walter and Irene Aubrey Ford Sr.

Survivors include wife, Ruby Ford of Wharton; mother, Irene Ford of Wharton; daughters, Latrice Williams and Angie Ford, both of Wharton; brothers, Michael Ford, Gerald Ford, Wayne Ford, Wayne Williams and Robert Williams, all of Wharton; sisters, Billie Moore, Dixie Robinson, Kathy Aldridge, Carol Ray, Melanie Harris, Sandra Ford, Debra Byrd and Jeanie Ford, all of Wharton; and three grandchildren of Wharton.

Ammie Sweeney

Ammie Mitchell Sweeney was born in Wharton Dec. 2, 1948, to Clyde Mitchell and Johnnie Hicks Mitchell, the fourth of six children. She grew up in Wharton and attended Wharton public schools. Mrs. Sweeney was a very active “Wharton Wolves” and graduated from Wharton Training High School in 1967.

In her early life, she accepted Christ and was baptized by Brother Eddie Brinkley at the Church of Christ in Wharton.

In September of 1966, she married Haywood Ross and to this union were born two children, Zachary Mitchell Ross and Audrey Mitchell Ross. Zachary preceded his mother in death.

In February of 1976, she married Lionel Sweeney. He also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Sweeney was also preceded in death by her father, Clyde Mitchell, and her brothers, Ellis and Clyde Jr.

In her career, she worked in various professions. She had training in respiratory therapy, welding, and as a certified nurse’s assistant. She also worked for many years as a personal care assistant providing in-home care to the aged. She was a very loving and giving person and touched many lives. Mrs. Sweeney never met a stranger.

She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Dr. Audrey Ross Powell and her husband Larry Powell. Her only grandchild, Lauryn Elizabeth Powell, will forever love and miss “Nana.”

She also leaves her mother Johnnie Mae Mitchell of Wharton; her youngest brother, Lee Andrew Mitchell and wife, Dolores live in Sugar Land; her younger brother Charles Mitchell resides in Houston; her older brother Leroy Mitchell and wife Doris make their home in Denver, Colo. There is also a host of Nephews, Nieces, Cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Martin Luther King Church of Christ. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church located at 1908 Martin Luther King Boulevard. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.

Anna Matusek

Anna Baumruk Matusek, age 81, of Columbus, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, in the River Oaks Health Care Center. She was born on Dec. 28, 1924, in El Campo, daughter of the late Frank Baumruk and Antonia Liska Baumruk.

Mrs. Matusek was reared in El Campo and was a 1941 graduate of El Campo High School. She attended and graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College with her master of education and English degrees. Mrs. Matusek married Sylvester Steve Matusek on June 18, 1960, in El Campo. He preceded her in death on Nov. 24, 1996. Mrs. Matusek was employed as a teacher with various school districts including, El Campo, Crescent, Tidehaven and Blessing before her retirement in 1990. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City and the KJZT in Taiton.

Funeral mass services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at Wharton Funeral Home. Friends may call for visitation from 6 to 9 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home on Friday, Feb. 3.

Survivors include her sister, Mary B. Greer of San Antonio and numerous nieces, nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters, Adela B. Peoples and Dorothy B. Cerny.

Pallbearers are William Greer, Cole Broskay, Mark Matusek, James Matusek, Bennie Matusek Jr. and Michael Dworaczyk.

Dalbert McKey

Dalbert Ray McKey, age 68, of Wharton, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006 in Wharton. He was born on Sept. 16, 1937, in Vienna, son of the late William Guy McKey and Myrtle Klimitchek McKey.

Mr. McKey was a 1956 graduate of Sheridan High School. He was a 44-year resident of Wharton County and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Mr. McKey was a veteran of the U. S. Army and also served in the U. S. Army Reserve until his honorable discharge in July of 1962. He married Doris Stanley on April 7, 1961, in Wagerville, Ala. Mr. McKey worked as a police officer for the City of Wharton for seven years, as a patrolman for Texas Gulf Sulphur for more than 18 years and as a jailer for Wharton County until his retirement in 1999. His favorite hobbies were playing dominoes with his many friends, hunting and fishing with his family and spending time with his grandchildren.

Following cremation, memorial services were held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wharton with The Rev. Laura Olson officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Doris McKey of Wharton; son, Billy McKey and wife, Lisa, of Rosenberg; grandchildren, Kristen McKey and Drew McKey; step-sisters, Annie Lea Hoy, Gloria Kuecker and Janice Janicek; and step-brother, Donald Brown.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Rhoda Brown McKey and half-brother, Marvin Smith.
Honorary pallbearers were Ray Reed, Leland Treybig, David Brewer, Dan Tesar, Daniel Lopez, Bob Wynn, Buddy Koehne, Charles Bollom, Willie Ford and C.H. Kulak.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 325 N. East Ave., Wharton, TX 77488; or to Wharton County 100 Club, P.O. Box 46, El Campo, TX 77437.

Arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
