James Ivy

James J. Ivy Jr., 78, of El Campo, died Jan. 29, 2006, after and extended illness. He was born Feb. 10, 1927, in Gillette to James J. and Rebecca Ivy.
His family moved to Wharton in 1929. He grew up and lived most of his life in Wharton County with a span from 1968 to 1986 in Canyon Lake, Comal County. Most of his young life was spent working with his family in the dairy business in Wharton and Glen Flora. In May of 1945, at the age of 18, he joined the U.S. Army. Before being honorably discharged on Feb. 19, 1953, with the rank of sergeant first class, his tour of duty included Korea, Washington, Arkansas, Alaska and was completed at Fort Hood.

He returned to Wharton where he owned and operated a service station and beverage store. In 1956 he began a life of public service which included the El Campo Police Department, El Campo Post Office, Wharton Sheriff’s Department, Comal County Sheriff’s Department and Comal County Constable Precinct 4, before retiring in 1997 at the age of 70.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Joyce Ann Hunt Ivy of El Campo; daughter, Vickie Ann Smith and husband, Paul Holub, of Glen Flora; granddaughters, Debbie D. Krenek and Lisa Marie Machen, both of Glen Flora; sister, Dorene Turner of Spring; brother, Clarence Ivy and wife, Mickie Ivy, of El Campo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, James J. Ivy Sr., and mother, Rebecca Ann Cleveland Ivy; brother, Robert Doyle Ivy; sisters, Joyce Nickolyn and Eunice Stewart; niece, Shirley Dees; and numerous nephews and friends.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Wheeler Funeral Home, 612 W. Jackson, El Campo. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Don A. Storey Sr., chaplain for Hospice Support Care in El Campo officiating.

Frances Britton

Funeral services are pending for Frances Britton, 66, of Wharton, at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Britton died Feb. 10, 2006, in a Bay City nursing home following a brief illness.

Angelina Mach

Funeral services for Angelina Helen Mach, 98, of Houston, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, in the chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. A rosary was held Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mach died Feb. 7., 2006, in Houston. She was born Feb. 5, 1908, in Hallettsville to Steve and Frances Zahradnik Zapalac.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Willie Mach; sons, Lonnie Mach, Wilber Mach and Leon Mach; her parents, Steve and Frances Zapalac; her six sisters and four brothers.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Bennie and Dorothy Mach of Wharton; daughters and son-in-law, Shirley and Bill Gay of Long Beach, Miss., and Laurie Ann Mach of Houston; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home, 3900 B. F. Terry Boulevard in Rosenberg.

David Mazel

Funeral services for David J. Mazel, 58, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Mazel died Feb. 10, 2006, in El Campo after a sudden illness. He was the owner of Wharton Farm and Ranch in Wharton.

James Sherrill

James Franklin Sherrill died Feb. 4, 2006, with his wife, Ann, and family by his side. Mr. Sherrill was born in Wharton, Jan. 19, 1933, to James O. and Ovie Meeks Sherrill.

He attended schools in Boling Independent School District, graduating from Boling High School in 1950. In BHS, Mr. Sherrill was very involved in sports, lettering in basketball and football. Among wonderful friends in the Class of 1950, he was elected senior class favorite. After graduation, he attended Wharton County Junior College and was employed by Texasgulf, Inc. In 1952, Mr. Sherrill married Ann Cross of Newgulf. Soon, he was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve his country in the Korean War. Upon returning from Korea, Franklin and Ann moved into a company house in Newgulf as he resumed his employment with Texasgulf. Soon, the Texasgulf Fannet Plant opened for operation and the young Sherrill family moved to Beaumont to begin a new life.

While in Beaumont, he earned a degree in accounting from Lamar University. His career with Texasgulf resulted in many moves to many mine locations. The things most important to Mr. Sherrill were his family, his church, his military service to his country and his 35 years with Texasgulf, Inc.

Survivors include his wife, Ann C. Sherrill of Austin; daughter, Ann Katherine and husband James Caskey, MD, of Lufkin; daughter, Gaye Carolyn and husband Paul Millsap of Austin; brother, Hartzell and wife Marie of Wharton; grandchildren, Michelle Ann Caskey and husband Ron Haney of Lufkin, Camille Sherrill Caskey of Dallas, Charles Franklin Caskey of University of California-Davis, Angela Katherine Caskey of University of Texas-Austin, Paul Brian Millsap Jr. of TCU in Fort Worth, Taylor George Millsap of Austin, and great-granddaughter, Alexandra Ann Haney of Lufkin. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Mrs. Willis Sherrill of Bay City and Mrs. J.B. Gary Jr. of Boling.

He was preceded in death by his parents James O. and Ovie Sherrill; brother, Willis; sister and brother-in-law, Norma Jane and Lon Allen; and infant son, James Franklin Sherrill Jr.

A memorial service was held Sunday afternoon, Feb. 5, 2006. The service, conducted by Franklin’s brother, Hartzell Sherrill, with readings by granddaughters Angela and Camille, and was held in the Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home in Austin.

Charles Cooper

Funeral services for Dr. Charles Edward Cooper Jr., O.D., 66, of Bay City, were held Monday at Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Moulton with Rev. J. Brown officiating. Burial followed in Moulton City Cemetery.

Dr. Cooper died Feb. 3, 2006, at Matagorda General Hospital. He was born Nov. 25, 1939, in Flatonia to the late Charles E. and Elizabeth Taylor Cooper Sr.

He had been an optometrist for 35 years and worked in Wharton for 25 years.

Survivors include wife, Delores Hajek Cooper; sons, Curtis Cooper of Frisco and Clay Cooper of Plano; sister, Sue Harris of Gonzales; and five grandchildren.

Robert McMicken

Robert Charles “Bob” McMicken Jr., age 49, of Wharton, died Saturday, March 4, 2006, at his residence following a sudden illness.

He was born on Jan. 9, 1957, in Wharton, son of Robert C. McMicken Sr. and Helen Marie Pospisil McMicken.

Mr. McMicken was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford. He was a1976 graduate of Wharton High School and attended Wharton County Junior College. Mr. McMicken married Janice Anne Treybig on May 29, 1982, in Wharton. He worked as a District Sales Manager for Frito Lay Corporation for the past 21 years. He was a former coach in both the Wharton Little League and Wharton Youth Soccer League.

Mr. McMicken was preceded in death by his father and brother, Ronald William McMicken.

A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today, Tuesday evening, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Janice McMicken of Wharton; daughter, Whitney McMicken of Wharton; sons, Jarrett McMicken and Ryan McMicken, both of Wharton; mother, Helen McMicken of Wharton; brothers and sister-in-law, Rodney McMicken of Wharton and Richard and Vickie McMicken of Freeport; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Pallbearers are Ricky McMicken, Leland Treybig Jr., Philip Treybig, David Voulgaris, Mickey Gelber, Raymond Wittig, Aaron Dittmar and Steven Dittmar.
Honorary pallbearers are all Frito Lay Region 6, District No. 639 employees, Freddie Siska, Shawn Wittig, Gene Schumaker, Stanley Kristynik and Mitch Kumaga.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the East Wharton County Heart Association, P.O. Box 226, Wharton, TX 77488; or to St. John’s Catholic Church Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 121, Hungerford, TX 77448.

Funeral services are under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Ann Simmons

Memorial services for Ann Simmons, 69, of Sealy, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, at First Baptist Church in Sealy with Rev. John Morris officiating.

Mrs. Simmons died March 5, 2006, in Sealy. She was born in Paducah to William G. and Jewel Applegate Kirk. She was reared in the Lubbock area.

Mrs. Simmons worked at Fort Bend Feed in Richmond for many years.

Survivors include husband, Jack Simmons of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Dianna and Vincent Lombardi of College Station, Sandra Simmons of Houston, Suzanne and Terry Perralt of Hector, Ark., and Dawn Simmons of Houston; sisters, Sherry Jones of Roanoke and Jackey Wygal of Scottsville, Ark.; twin brothers, Doug Kirk of Idalou and Dennis Kirk of Grandbury; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, William G. “Bill” Kirk.

Alvin Venglar

Rowland “Alvin” Venglar, age 83, of Wharton, died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at his residence. He was born on Feb. 7, 1923, in Fayetteville, the son of the late Paul Peter Venglar and Carrie Cervenka Venglar.

Mr. Venglar was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton and was a member of Wharton Knights of Columbus. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Venglar married Margaret Marie Scholz Venglar on Nov. 21, 1949, in East Bernard and began working for the U.S. Postal Service. He enjoyed gardening and his stained glass hobby.

Rosary services will be held Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at 7 p.m. from the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home. Funeral mass services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 9, 2006, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Joseph Vrana officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his daughters, Catherine Haraldsen and husband, John, of Denison, Yvonne Wrench of Richmond, Mary Ann Skoog of Victoria, and Karen Davis of Brighton, Ma., sons, Thomas Venglar and wife, Caroline, of Aurora, Colo., Paul Venglar and wife, Kim, of Fort Worth, Joe Venglar and Pam Schmidt of Boling, Keith Venglar and wife, Sandy, of Virginia Beach Va., and James Venglar and wife, Mollie of Poland, Ohio; sisters, Lillian Dry of Bay City and Doris Strauss of Caldwell; grandchildren, Kirsten Haraldsen, Peter and Erik Haraldsen, Joseph Aitken, Carrie Venglar Healy, Christina Venglar, Brent McClure, Anthony and Victoria Wrench, Rikki Wilkins, Andrea Venglar, Gideon and Dylan Venglar, Kimberly Mach, Matthew Skoog, Jeremy Davis, Lisa Venglar, Leslie and Zachary Venglar, Emily Venglar, Stacy McClure and Clint Skoog; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Venglar was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Margaret Venglar, and sisters Wilma Strauss, Lydia Price, Martha Carter, Mildred Crosswell and Annie Foyt.

Billy Biggerstaff

Billy Jack Biggerstaff of El Campo passed away on March 5, 2006, in Houston at the age of 50. He was born on Feb. 25, 1956, in El Campo to Bill and Foy Jean Tinsley Biggerstaff.

He is survived by his wife Jo Etta Boysen Biggerstaff of El Campo, son, Blake Biggerstaff of El Campo ; parents, Bill and Jean Biggerstaff of Pierce; brother, Mark Biggerstaff of Pierce; and step-grandmother, Helen Biggerstaff of Talco. He is preceded in death by his brother, Michael Biggerstaff.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Elks Lodge. He loved to hunt and fish, play baseball with his son and spend time with his family.

Visitation will begin on Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5: to 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Joyce McCormick officiating.

Burial will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Billy Drapela, Richard Zahn, Morris Tinsley Jr., Michael Rolf, Gabe Kahanek, Jeff Reckaway, Al Garrison, and Marshall “Red” Foster.

Honorary pallbearer will be Mike Shelly.

Memorial donations may be made to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, 1515 Holcombe Boulevard, Houston, TX 77030.

J.W. Blackwell

J.W. Blackwell, age 79, of Wharton, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, in a Houston hospital. He was born on April 25, 1926, in Houston, son of the late Willis Blackwell and R.J. Key Blackwell.

Mr. Blackwell was a 28-year resident of Wharton and a former resident of Rock Island, Eagle Lake and Pledger. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Blackwell married Lena Joyce White on Feb. 7, 1953, in Wharton. He worked as a contract welder for most of his life and most recently was a self-employed rancher. He was a member of the Texas Cattleman’s Association and was a member of the Dairy Queen Coffee Club.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, at the Wharton Funeral Home with Mr. Mickey Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow in the Wharton City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Blackwell of Wharton; daughters, Donna Tydlacka and husband, Woody, of Boling, Wendy Foisner and husband, David, of Boling and Cynthia Courtney and husband, Dennis, of Des Moines, Iowa; sons Raymond Blackwell and wife, Cyndie, of Coldspring and Wesley Blackwell of Wharton; sisters, Geraldine Sanders of Mathews and Joyce Barnhill of Wharton; grandchildren, James Larry Capps, Samantha Foisner, Melanie Foisner, Jake Foisner, Brandy Courtney, Ryan Blackwell, Sarah Tydlacka and Sonny Scott Tydlacka and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Lois Boerner, Izora Rice, Darlene Loocke, Billie Mayfield, Aileen Sanders and grandson, Christopher Capps.
Pallbearers are Ryan Blackwell, James Capps, Aaron Prihoda, Robbie Sanders, Randy Sanders and Justin Porter.

If desiring, memorials may be made to a charity of personal choice.

George Hodge

George Washington Hodge, age 96, of Wharton, died Feb. 19, 2006, in Wharton. He was born on May 27, 1909, in Beasley, the son of Oliver Jefferson Hodge and Martha Estelle Walden Hodge.

Mr. Hodge was a former resident of Pledger and Newgulf before moving to Wharton in 1964. He married Alma Ruth McGilvray on Jan. 26, 1935, in Newgulf.
Mr. Hodge was an administrative assistant in the Field Department at Texas Gulf Sulphur Company at the time of his retirement. He enjoyed all aspects of farming and hydroponic gardening. His greatest earthly treasure was his wonderful wife of 68 years. With this union came a large and loving family who are so proud to call him Daddy and Granddaddy. Mr. Hodge was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wharton where he showed his love for God and his church family. For many years one of his contributions to his church was mowing the lawn on a weekly basis.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church with The Reverend Paul Thomasson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Ruth Koonce and husband, Allen, of Taft, Marjory Hurta of West Columbia and Etta Mayfield and husband, Alec, of Wharton; daughter-in-law, Jackie Hodge of Wharton; brother-in-law, Gaylon McGilvray and wife, Frances, of Smithville; sister-in-law, Dorothy McGilvray of Onalaska; grandchildren, Becky Koonce-Meyer, Nancy Humberson, Lori Dawson, Sharon Johnson, Terri Hutchins, Jeanne Smith, Sandy Williams, Ronald Barker, Steven Barker, David Koonce, Keith Barker, Brent Barker, Wayne Hodge and Sammy Hodge; 34 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers are his grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers are Alec Mayfield, Allen Koonce, Gene Barker, friends, neighbors, nieces, nephews, Dr. Jody Gilstrap and his outstanding nurses at Gulf Coast Medical Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Alma Ruth; son, George Wayne; eight sisters; four brothers; and one granddaughter.

If desiring, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, TX 77488; Polycystic Kidney Foundation, 4901 Main Street, Suite 200, Kansas City, MO 64112; or to a charity of personal choice.
