John Gayle

John Phillips Gayle Jr. passed on to larger life on April 3, 2006. A lifetime spent in the service of others ended while working cattle, a fitting end for this good soul.

Mr. Gayle was born May 11, 1925, at East Columbia to John Phillips and Lavinia Brock Gayle. He graduated as valedictorian from Columbia High School in 1943. He resided in rural West Columbia for the past 61 years.

He married Doris Fussell of Angleton on April 25, 1944, beginning a 57-year partnership that enriched the lives of all who knew them and ended only with her death in November of 2001. They were blessed with three children, Lavinia Annette, John Benton and Regina Kay.

A lifelong farmer and rancher, Mr. Gayle raised Brahman and Brahman crossbred cattle on his ranch outside of West Columbia. He also farmed rice for several years. President John F. Kennedy appointed him to the Texas Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Committee in 1961. He had been an active member of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association since 1936 and served on the board of the Houston Agricultural Credit Corporation for many years.
He was elected county commissioner for Brazoria County Precinct 2 in 1962, serving until 1979. He was elected again in 1982 and served until 1991.

After his family, he was most proud of his service to the citizens of Brazoria County. Until the end of his life he maintained active participation in the affairs of his county and his state. While serving as county commissioner he served as president and as a board member of the South Texas Judges and Commissioners Association. He was particularly proud of the fact that during his 24 years on Commissioner’s Court there were no tax rate increases.

There was not a civic activity in West Columbia that he did not support with his time and money. In particular, he was proud of his support of the Columbia Emergency Medical Service and the Columbia Cemetery Association.

He was a descendant of Emily Austin Bryan, the daughter of Moses Austin and sister of Stephen F. Austin. He was interested in preserving historical sites in Brazoria County, supporting the construction of the replica of the first Capitol of the Republic of Texas and playing a key role in creating a memorial at the actual location of the death of Stephen F. Austin.
