Archie Bennetsen

Archie Virgil Bennetsen Sr., age 84, of Katy and former Wharton resident, died Saturday, April 1, 2006, in Houston. He was born on Jan. 16, 1922, in Ganado, son of the late Johannes “John” Pete Bennetsen and Helen Lena Rasmussen.

Mr. Bennetsen was a 1942 graduate of Crescent High School. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy. Following his military service, he worked as a merchant marine for four years. Mr. Bennetsen married Juanita Spears on April 27, 1951, in Wharton. Mr. Bennetsen was a 31-year employee of Texas Gulf Sulphur, having worked as a maintenance foreman in the phosphate mine in North Carolina until his retirement in 1982.

Following his retirement, he and Juanita moved to Wharton and lived for many years before moving to Katy in 2000. Mr. Bennetsen was a member of the AARP, Senior Friends and was a former Share volunteer. He was a former member and past president of the Aurora High School Booster Club. He was a member of Peace Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church of Wharton and The
Pentecostals of West Houston.

Funeral services were held at 11a.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at Peace Tabernacle Church with officiating ministers being, Rev. Charles Fisher, Rev. Scott T. Lewis and Rev. Guy Broadway. military graveside services and interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton under the auspices of the Wharton American Legion Post No. 87.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Bennetsen of Katy; sons, Terry Bennetsen of Corpus Christi, Mike Bennetsen and wife, Rhonda, of Katy, and Archie Virgil Bennetsen Jr. of Katy; sisters, Dorothy Stewart of Silsbee, Lucille Kohn of Fort Worth, Ruby Skrla and husband, Laddie, of Angleton and Orlee Schultz of El Campo; brother, Leroy Bennetsen and wife, Carolyn, of La Grange; grandchildren, Justin, Kaila, Ryan and Taylor Bennetsen and great-granddaughter, Madelyn Bennetsen. He was preceded in death by a son, Harold John Bennetsen in 1954.

Pallbearers were Ryan Bennetsen, Justin Bennetsen, James Greene, Jesse Odom, Jeff Brintnell, Robert Backus and David Castillo.

Josephine Alaniz

Funeral services for Josephine Barrera Alaniz, 91, of Wharton, were held Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. A rosary service was held Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Alaniz died March 31, 2006, in Wharton. She was born on Sept. 18, 1914, in Hungerford, the daughter of Luis Barrera and Ada P. Padilla Barrera.
She was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton. Mrs. Alaniz married Manuel Alaniz in Fayette County and he preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1983. She was a homemaker all her life.

Survivors include her sons, Luis Alaniz of Houston, Enrique Alaniz, and Teofilo “Charlie” Alaniz, both of Wharton; and sister, Maria Robles of San Angelo; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Emilio Barrera, and son, Hilario Alaniz.

Zula Smith

Funeral services for Zula Mae Smith, 89, of El Campo, will be held Saturday at Mount Sinai Baptist Church with Rev. J.C. Williams officiating. Burial will follow in El Campo Community Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith died March 30, 2006, at Garden Villa Nursing Home. She was born Nov. 9, 1916, in Grove Hill to the late Joe and Martha Hodges.

She was a housewife.

Survivors include her parents; son, Alfred Hodges; and two granddaughters.

Thelma Hayes

Funeral services for Thelma Bea Hayes, 67, of East Bernard, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Temple of Glory in Kendleton with Rev. A. Banks officiating. Burial will follow in Powell Point Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Hayes died March 28, 2006, in Memorial Hermann Fort Bend Hospital. She was born Sept. 19, 1938, in East Bernard to Clyde and Emma Scott Spears Sr.

Survivors include husband, Kermis Hayes of East Bernard; sons, Carl Hayes of Katy, Michael L. Hayes of East Bernard, Van Hayes of Houston and Curtis Hayes of Columbus; daughters, Diane Crump of East Bernard, Elaine Hayes, Jeannette Hayes Curtis and Barbara Hayes, all of Richmond, and Michelle Hayes and Pamela Hayes, both of Houston; brothers, Clyde Spears Jr. of Richmond, C.J. Spears of Houston and Sam Shelton of Wallis; sisters, Bertha Sewell and Emma Jean Richards, both of East Bernard, and Stella White of Houston; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Sarah Ryman

Sarah “Bobbie” Ryman, 83, of Bay City, passed away Saturday, April 15, 2006. She was born Nov. 16, 1922, in New Camp, Ken., to William H. and Ruth Rohrbough Rector.

She was a resident of Bay City for the past 60 years, a member of the First United Methodist Church, and was retired from the Bay City Independent School District as a cafeteria manager.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth Ann Sellers and husband Butch of Victoria and Virginia R. Kreiger and husband Mark of Austin; by her sons and daughter-in-law, William E. Ryman of Bay City and Gary L. Ryman and wife Karen of Hungerford; by her brother, William H. Rector of Omaha, Neb.; her step-brother, Joe H. Jester of Wayzata, Minn.; and by her grandchildren, Tracy L. Sellers of Spearman, Keith Wayne Sellers , his wife Shelley and son Dasen of Amarillo, Jennifer L. Garcia, her husband Tony and children Christalyn and T.J. of Georgetown, Julie K. Wenning and husband Craig of Dallas and Lisa M. Ryman of Hungerford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Ryman; her parents, William H. and Ruth Rector; her brother, John Edward Rector; and one grandson, Brian J. Kreiger.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church in Bay City with Rev. Pauline Harvey officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Richard Savage

A memorial service for Richard G. Savage, 36, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Iago Federated Church.

Mr. Savage is the son of Rick Savage and Peggy Presley of Yorktown and step-son of Peggy Savage of Yorktown.

He passed away on April 9, 2006.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations made to the Yorktown EMS in Yorktown, TX 78164.

Sidney Berberich

Funeral services for Sidney Anton Berberich, 87, of Wharton, were held at 10 a.m. today, Friday, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Don Hurley officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton.

Mr. Berberich died April 12, 2006, in a Wharton hospital following an extended illness. He was born on July 19, 1918, in Magnet, the son of Anton C. Berberich and Catherine Rimmer Berberich.
He was a lifelong resident of Wharton County and a member of College Heights Baptist Church in Wharton. Mr. Berberich worked as a field foreman with Texasgulf Sulphur for more than 30 years prior to his retirement. He married Clara Mae Mathews on April 29, 1961, in El Campo. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Mae Berberich of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald “Brick” and Mary Berberich of El Campo, Mike Berberich of The Woodlands, Ricky Hall of San Antonio and Kenny and Dina Hall of Palacios; sisters, Juanita Blumberg and Beatrice Appier, both of Wharton; 6 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to College Heights Baptist Church, 1515 Briar Lane, Wharton, TX 77488.

Ida James

Funeral services for Ida James, 64, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Lane City with Rev. Carl Kemp officiating. Burial will follow at Bowden Cemetery in Hungerford.

Mrs. James died April 10, 2006, at Gulf Coast
Medical Center. She was born Aug. 4, 1941, in Wharton to John Henry and Aridulia Earls Lewis.
She was a Baptist by faith and worked as a housekeeper.

Survivors include son, Anthony Tolden; daughters, Winda James Jackson of Pledger and Diana Lewis of Wharton; brother, Andrew Lewis of Lane City; sister, Gladys Marie McJunkins of Kansas City, Kan.; four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Joanne McLeod

Joanne McLeod, 66, of Boling, died April 13, 2006, in a Houston hospital following an extended illness.
Following cremation, a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Harold Bickley

Harold Bickley, 64, of Glen Flora passed away April 8, 2006, after a sudden and brief illness. He will be sorely missed by his wife Faith Bickley and daughter and son-in-law Amy and Jim Hertzog of Avondale, Pa., plus his beloved grandchildren, Phillip, Abbey and Hannah Church, and Jack Hertzog plus Benjamin Harold Hertzog whose arrival he will miss by two weeks. His “favorite” mother-in-law Phyllis DeGelleke, will also feel the loss greatly.

Mr. Bickley’s family came to Glen Flora in the early 1900s to the home place where Harold and Faith resided.

A graduate of Texas Wesleyan College in Fort Worth, he spent 37 years in education beginning in Houston and Fort Worth and later 30 years in Okinawa, Japan, first as a teacher in the military dependant schools and then as a teacher of teachers in those schools. Mr. Bickley was able to enjoy 6 years of retirement and has left many remembrances of his handyman and woodworking skills. Being a member of the Glen Flora Volunteer Fire Department also was a highlight of his retirement years.

There will be a family graveside ceremony at a later time. Remembrances in Mr. Bickley’s memory to the Houston SPCA, 900 Portman Drive, Houston, TX 77024, would please him greatly as his animals, almost all rescues brought to Texas from Japan, were some of the true delights of his life.

Frank Fuller

Funeral services for Frank “Big John” Edward Fuller Sr., 61, of Freeport, will be held Saturday, April 15, 2006, at 11 a.m. at True Honor Baptist Church in Clute with Pastor Wesley Hicks officiating. Burial will follow at Gulf Coast Cemetery in Clute.

He died on Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Mr. Fuller was a member of True Honor Baptist Church where he served on the deacon board, trustee board, the brotherhood and was president or the choir. He also worked with the youth department. Mr. Fuller loved plants.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel Lee Fuller; son, Randy Lunford; and grandchild, Randy Lunford Jr.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Emily Fuller of Freeport; father, Clarette Fuller of Clute; sons, Frank Edward and Jo Ann Fuller Jr. of Lake Jackson, Charles and Julie Lunford of Angleton, Michael and Flora Lunford of Wharton and Calvin and Nornell Fuller of Freeport; daughters, Zenolia Fuller and Bernadette Fuller, both of Lake Jackson, Delores and Joseph Stevenson of Freeport and Yolanda Fuller of Angleton; sister, Pearlie Taylor of Houston; 33 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Active pallbearers will be Cedric Hanks, Kirkland Lunford, Kenneth Lunford, Donald Lunford, Ricky Lunford, Eddie Baker, Lawrence Richo and Leonard Richo.

Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of True Honor Baptist Church, Charles Lunford, Michael Lunford, Frank Edward Fuller Jr., Calvin Fuller, Lorenzo Fuller, Joseph Stevenson Sr. and Joseph Stevenson Jr.

Visitation will be Friday, April 14, 2006, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Dixon Funeral Home in Brazoria. There will also be visitation Friday, April 14, 2006, from 5 to 8 p.m. at True Honor Baptist Church in Clute.
