Joanne McLeod

Joanne McLeod, age 66, of Iago, died Thursday, April 13, 2006, in Houston. She was born on Dec. 31, 1939, in West Columbia, daughter of the late Rufus Edward Watson and Claudia Vern Terrel Watson.

Mrs. McLeod was reared in El Campo, where she attended El Campo High School and later graduated from Vivian High School in Vivian, La. She also attended Wharton County Junior College. Mrs. McLeod was a former resident of El Campo and Bay City before moving to Iago in 1985. She was a homemaker, a former Bay City Police Department dispatcher and was a retired major with the Texas State Guard. Mrs. McLeod married Karl McLeod on March 21, 1985, in Iago. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Wharton Pilot Club and Wharton Garden Club. Her favorite pastime was her love for growing various flowers.

Following cremation, memorials services will be held 5 p.m. Saturday, April 29, 2006, at Iago Federated Church in Iago.

Survivors include her husband, Karl McLeod of Iago; daughter, Marla McLeod-Ali of Portland, Ore.; sons, Glenn Hayes of Marble Falls, Jay Hearn of Iago, John McLeod and wife, Shelly, of Fort Worth, Darrel Hearn and wife, Becky, of Queen City; Scott McLeod of Maui, Ha., and Wesley Hearn and wife, Joy, of Alvin; sister, Kay Parker and husband, Bill, of Bay City; grandchildren, Levret Hayes, Sonja Wyatt, Journey Hayes, Omri Hayes, Jeremy Peyton, Bryan Hearn, Walsh Hearn, Will Hearn, Megan Hearn, Justen Hearn, Jakob Hearn, Emma McLeod, Safia McLeod-Ali, Leyla McLeod-Ali and Elijah McLeod-Ali; and great-granddaughter, Kyla Ann Peyton.

Alphonse Sciba

Funeral services for Alphonse A. “Sonny” Sciba Jr., 75, of Corrigan, were held Monday at Stryker Baptist Church with Pastor William Lee officiating. Burial followed in the Stryker Cemetery.

Mr. Sciba died April 21, 2006, in a Lufkin hospital. He was born Jan. 23, 1931, in Lane City.
He was a member of Stryker Baptist Church and the Corrigan Masonic Lodge No. 1103 AF&AM.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Sam Sarlton; half-sister, Merle Elkins; and sisters, Evelyn Able and June Able.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mattie Sirman Sciba of Corrigan; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Kathy Sciba of Wharton, Don and Cheryl Sciba of Chandler; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Dan Jones of Waxahachie; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Jimmie Bluntson

Funeral services for Jimmie Bluntson Sr., 72, of Elm Grove will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elm Grove Baptist Church with Rev. N. Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery. Visitation is set for Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Monday.

Mr. Bluntson died at Gulf Coast Medical Center on April 20, 2006. He was born May 11, 1933, in Elm Grove to Willie and Irene Williams Bluntson Sr.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Lee Baines Bluntson of Elm Grove; sons, Jimmie Bluntson Jr. of Elm Grove, Jerry Bluntson of Bellville, De Loyd Baines of Sugar Land and Tommie Lee Bluntson of Egypt; daughters, Jeanette Armstead of Richmond, Norman Wright of Atlanta, Ga., Sadie Bluntson, Wanda Bluntson, Peggy Johnson, all of Elm Grove, Brenda Woods of Wharton and Ann Allen of El Campo; brothers, J.C. Bluntson, Willie Bluntson Jr. of Elm Grove and Arvis Bluntson of Garwood; sisters, Irene Tolliver of Eagle Lake, Bobbie Thompson of Texas City and Ruth Sewell of Galveston; 25 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Mary Garcia

Following cremation, a memorial mass for Mary Elaine Salazar Garcia, 55, of Houston, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Garcia died April 13, 2006, in a Houston Hospice following an extended illness. She was born on Feb. 9, 1951, in Wharton the daughter of the late Eutimio Salazar and Carolina Gamboa Salazar.

She had been a resident of Houston for most of her life and was Catholic by faith. She was a homemaker for many years.
Survivors include a sister, Hortensia Salazar Alaniz of Houston; two brothers, one step-daughter, two step-sons and two step-grandchildren.

Dorothy Garrett

Dorothy Lorraine Garrett, age 89, of Wharton, died April 18, 2006, in Wharton. She was born on Jan. 13, 1917, in Winterset, Iowa, the daughter of Walter Scott Garrett and Anna Marie Teske.

Ms. Garrett was a Wharton resident since the age of four. She was an operator with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Wharton for more than 30 years until her retirement in 1973. She enjoyed her flower garden and yard work and was a very good cook. Ms. Garrett was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wharton.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 20, 2006, at the St. John’s Lutheran Church with The Reverend Barry Sharp officiating. Internment followed in Wharton City Cemetery.

Survivors include sisters, Charleen Dixon and husband, Thurman, of Wharton, Irene Garrett of Wharton, and Marjorie Matthys and husband, Lothar, of Lampasas; nieces, Shirley Koenig and husband, Walter, of Lumberton, and Terri Fisher and husband, Jeffery, of Jackson, Miss.; and nephew, Dr. Tom Matthys and wife, Naomi, of Copperas Cove.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Anna Garrett; and sisters, Gladys Matthys, Leona Garrett and Bertha Garrett.

Wilma Guess

Wilma Gladys Pearson Guess, 98, passed away April 19, 2006. Wilma was born in Shawnee, Kan., on Jan. 28, 1908, to Charles W. and Elsie Mae Pearson.
The family moved to Sugar Valley, in 1909. Several years later the family bought a farm on Pearson Road near Burr. Mrs. Guess attended school in Burr and Wharton and received a degree from Texas Woman’s College in Denton. She taught school in Burr and Boling. Mrs. Guess married Winston Harold Guess of Rogers in 1936. The Guesses resided in Galveston until Harold’s death in 1957, at which time she moved to Rosenberg. Mrs. Guess was the registrar at Lamar Consolidated High School until her retirement. In retirement, she was a volunteer at the First United Methodist Church of Rosenberg and the Richmond State School. Mrs. Guess was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Lamar Consolidated Retired Teachers.

Mrs. Guess was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, Charles Russell Pearson.
She is survived by her sister, Marjorie Ann Pearson Mays of Friendswood; nephew, W.A. Mays and wife, Doris, of Lake Jackson; niece, Sally Jean Mays of Alvin; niece, Jackie Rose Pearson Traylor of San Antonio; five great-nephews, two great-nieces, seven great-great-nephews, and nine great-great-nieces.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 22, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating.

Jim Hubenak

Jim D. Hubenak, 59, of Spring, went to be with his Lord on June 10, 2006. He was born on Jan. 29, 1947 to Vince and Bessie Hubenak of Wharton.

Mr. Hubenak graduated from Wharton High School in 1965 where he was a star basketball player during which time he was selected to play on the All State North/South team. He was granted a full basketball scholarship at Rice University where he graduated in 1970.
He began his professional career at Hess Oil in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, and continued with Union Pacific in Corpus Christi and Houston. Mr. Hubenak was a lifetime member of the “R” Association and the Westin A. Price Foundation. He was an avid reader who also enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Holly Allen Hubenak; two sons, Jake, who is a senior at Auburn University; David, who is an attorney in Houston and wife Colbie; grandsons Rylan and Benjamin; sisters, Bessie Mae Boone, Evelyn McVey, Mildred Ripple, Shirley Davis, Clara Dahlstrom, Nancy Sablatura and one brother, Roland. Jim was preceded in death by his sister Isabelle Michaelsen.

A memorial service will be held at Klein Funeral Home on June 14 at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Westin A. Price Foundation in support of Mr. Hubenak’s passion for organic foods and his strong beliefs in protecting the environment.

Ricky Hough

Ricky Ray Hough, age 49, of East Bernard, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was born on June 17, 1956, in Eagle Lake, the son of the late John F. and Clara Graves Hough.

Mr. Hough was a lifelong resident of East Bernard. He was a 1974 graduate of East Bernard High School and later attended and graduated from Sam Houston State University with a degree in agribusiness. On Jan. 15, 1988, he married the former Suzanne Hlozek in East Bernard. Mr. Hough worked in the agriculture industry in the sales department of Boettcher Hlavinka Company. He previously worked for Shoppa’s Farm Supply in the East Bernard area. Mr. Hough enjoyed being with his children, hunting and having fun with the Bimbo Cookers and members of the Black Jack Ranch deer camp.

Funeral services will be held today, Friday, June 9, 2006, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton with Rev. Don Storey officiating. Graveside services follows at Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Suzanne Hough of East Bernard; sons, John Jacob Hough and Jeremy Wade Hough, both of East Bernard; brothers, Charlie Hough of East Bernard, Jack “Bubba” Hough and wife, Patti, of Lissie, and Randy Hough and wife, Lisa, of East Bernard.

Pallbearers were Stephen Dybala, Corey Hough, Brady Hough, Cole Hough, Dusty Hough, Eugene Dusek, Bud Graves and Darryl Kutach.

Honorary Pallbearers were William Dybala, members of the Bimbo Cookers and the Black Jack Ranch deer camp.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Francis Plunkett

Following cremation, memorial services for Francis “Sonny” Plunkett, 82, of Magnet will be held at a later date.

Mr. Plunkett died June 6, 2006, in a Wharton hospital following a brief illness. He was born on Aug. 26, 1923, in Boling, son of the late Walter Plunkett and Bessie Camel Plunkett.

He was a lifelong resident of Magnet and worked as a rancher until his retirement. Mr. Plunkett married Tomasa Olivares on Sept. 2, 1961, in Bay City. Mr. Plunkett was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Tomasa Plunkett of Magnet; sisters, Geraldine Mullins and Violet Peterson, both of Angleton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Travis Cockrell

Travic Cockrell was born on May 5, 1908, to Frank and Elizabeth Cockrell in Panola County Texas. He went to be with the Lord on June 3, 2006, in Columbus at River Oaks Health Care Center. He was 98 years old.

He was retired from Atlantic Richfield. He was a deacon in the Baptist church.

After his retirement he loved to mow, work in his garden, fish and play dominoes. His greatest joy was all the special times he had with his five grandchildren and their families.

He was preceded in death by his two sisters and one brother, his wife Ruth Mitchell Cockrell of 54 years and one grandson, Brian Matthew Cockrell.
He is survived by two sons, Darryl Cockrell and his wife La Juana of Bellville and James Cockrell of Wharton; one granddaughter, Debbie and Larry Doneley; four grandsons, Dale and Belinda Cockrell, Mike and Beth Cockrell, Randy and Kathy Cockrell and James and Marcia Cockrell Jr.; eight great-grandchildren, Travis, Matthew, Allison, Lisa, Kelsey, Jason, Jared and Jamie.

Funeral services will be Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and the funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, with Rev. Jimmy Turpin officiating. Graveside service will be at Rekobeth Methodist Cemetery in Carthage at 2 p.m. Thursday with Don Harrison officiating.

Norman Hill

Norman D. Hill, age 81, of Boling, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, in Houston. He was born on Sept. 2, 1924, in Gonzales County, son of the late Lee Hill and Ima May Blundell Hill.

Mr. Hill was Baptist by faith and a 66-year resident of Boling. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the 44th Tank Battalion as a 1st sergeant in the U.S. Army before receiving an honorable discharge. Mr. Hill received the following medals while serving in the U.S. Army: Meritorious Unit Award, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon, and 3 Overseas Service Bars. Mr. Hill married Lena Jurek on Dec. 24, 1946, in Boling. He was employed as a painter for Texas Gulf Sulphur for 35 years before his retirement in 1982.

Following cremation, memorial graveside services with military honors will be held 10 a.m.

Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Mickey Reynolds officiating. military honors will be provided by Wharton American Legion Post No. 87.

Survivors include his wife, Lena Hill of Boling; sons, Larry Hill and wife, Kathy, of Boling, and Gary Hill and wife, Mary Jane, of Boling; sister, Ella Gardner of Texas City; grandchildren, Carman Adell Tanner and husband, David, Kathryn Colleen Forasiepi and husband, Marvin, Courtney Elizabeth Hill, Josh Granado, Leslie Granado, Andre Batilla and Rudy Batilla; great-grandchildren, Larry David Tanner, Elyse Kathryn Tanner, Rhett Gary Tanner, Abigail Krysti Forasiepi, Emily Antoinette Forasiepi, Maddox Jay Prentice, Joshie Granado, Angel Granado, Andre Jacob Batilla and Elizabeth Batilla.

He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Ray Hill; sisters, Virgie Farley, Anges Young, Grace Nelson; brothers, Walter Lee Hill, Preston Roy Hill and Alton Vickery.

Honorary pallbearers were all his fellow Texas Gulf Sulphur employees.

William Malek

William Louis Malek departed this life June 4, 2006. He was born Dec. 29, 1925, in Yoakum to Edmund and Mary Maresh Malek.

Mr. Malek retired in 1988 as foreman of Channel Industries Gas/Tenneco after more than 40 years in the oilfield business. He served in World War II as an Army staff sergeant where he was awarded Army of Occupation Medal and WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 39 years Delores Stelzel Malek of Bay City; daughter, Monica Chumchal and husband Kenneth of El Campo; son, James Malek and Fiancee Kay Kurtz of East Bernard; five grandchildren, Cody William Chumchal, Paige Danielle Chumchal, Justin William Malek, Tyler Jacob Kurtz and Emily Faith Kurtz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Mary Janis, Albina Vahalik, Toni Morris, Alma Holy and Lillian Bilicek; and two brothers, Edwin and Frank Malek.

A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Rev. Gerry Cernoch officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Pallbearers will be Danny Pless, David Pless, Hans Stelzel, Ronnie Faul Jr., Henry Morris and Randy Chumchal.

His grandchildren and former co-workers will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Holy Cross School Foundation, P.O. Box 571, Bay City, TX 77404; American Heart Association; or charity of personal choice.
