Robert Shavers

Funeral services for Robert Lee “Bobby” Shavers Sr., 51, of Wallis, were held Sunday, June 4, at Macedonica Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Leo Humphrey officiating. Burial followed at Powell Point Cemetery in Kendleton.

Mr. Shavers died June 1, 2006, at Oak Bend Hospital in Richmond. He was born Dec. 14, 1954, in East Bernard to Jessie “Jack” and Leon Johnson Shavers.

He worked as a livestock truck driver.

Mr. Shavers was preceded in death by his mother and father; nephew, Gregory Shavers; sister, Janice Shavers; niece, Latasha Shavers; and grandmother, Maude Jones.

Survivors include sons, Bobby Shavers Jr. and Jerome Sparks, both of Wharton; five granddaughters and one grandson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jessie and Shirley Shavers Jr. of East Bernard, Henry H. and Freddie Mae Shavers of Houston, Charles “Charlie” and Carol Shavers of Austin, and Willie Carl and Marcie Shavers of Needville; sisters, Helen L. Shavers of East Bernard, Joycie M. Robinson of Kendleton and Jessie Mae Clemons of Compton, Calif.

Allen Talas

Funeral services for Allen R. Talas, 53, of East Bernard, was held Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with Rev. Don Ruppert officiating. Burial followed in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in East Bernard. A Rosary was recited Monday evening at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard.

Mr. Talas died June 3, 2006, in East Bernard following an extended illness. He was born on July 19, 1952, in East Bernard the son of the late Joe Frank Talas Sr. and Lucy Francis Orsak Talas.
He was a lifelong resident of East Bernard and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. Mr. Talas graduated from East Bernard High School in 1970 and received a BS degree in agriculture from Sam Houston State University. He married Elaine Faye Pelzel on Sept. 30, 1978, in East Bernard and she preceded him in death on Aug. 8, 2001. Mr. Talas was also preceded in death by his father. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2500 in East Bernard.
Survivors include his mother, Lucy Talas of East Bernard; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Gary Eckelberg of Sealy, Yvonne Naiser of East Bernard and Patsy and Charles Verm of Sealy; brothers and sisters-in-law, James Talas of East Bernard, Joe Frank Talas Jr. and wife, Linda, of Hungerford, and Kenneth and Angelia Talas of East Bernard; one godchild and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Holy Cross Catholic Church, P.O. Box 280, East Bernard, TX 77435.

Paul Pietzsch

Funeral services for Paul J. Pietzsch, 86, of East Bernard will be held at 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, May 30, 2006, at First United Methodist Church in East Bernard. Interment will follow at the East Bernard Methodist Cemetery in East Bernard. Rev. Michael Holcombe will officiate the services.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, May 29, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church, 421 Pietzsch Street in East Bernard.

Mr. Pietzsch was born July 21, 1919, in East Bernard, to Paul and Hertha Otto Pietzsch. He passed away May 26, 2006, in Wharton.
He served in the United States Air Force during World War II.

Mr. Pietzsch is preceded in death by his parents, Paul J. and Hertha Pietzsch; his daughter, Lanette Haley; and sisters, Florine Matthews, Dora Bell Pullin, Hertha Drachenberg, Alberta Wagner; and brother, Wesley Pietzsch.

He is survived by his wife, Zera Grantham Pietzsch; son, Dennis Pietzsch and his wife, Cynthia; grandchildren, Jason Haley and Laura Thomas, Jamie and Tim Siegert, Adam Haley and Nicole Kennedy, Ashley Pietzsch, Chris and Cari Cavness; great-grandchildren, Allison Haley and Trevor Siegert, Kirsten Cavness; sister, Pauline Schobel; family member, Madeline Cole, as well as other family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Winfred Pullin, Buck Matthews, Ronald Drachenberg, Donald Guess, Kenneth Grantham and Larry Grantham.

Honorary pallbearers will be The Joy Sunday School Class.

For those wishing, memorials made in Paul’s name can be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 421 Pietzsch Street, East Bernard, TX 77435.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in East Bernard.

Patricia Willey

Patricia J. “Pat” Willey, 55, of Wharton, formerly of Rock Island, Ill., died Saturday, May 27, 2006, at her residence following an extended illness.

Following cremation, memorial services will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Wharton with Rev. Mack Mathis officiating. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens Cemetery, East Moline, Ill.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Grace K. Gladden, 204 Second Street, Wharton TX 77488.

Mrs. Willey was born Oct. 16, 1955, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Richard and Shirley Heming Forslund. She married Bennett L. Willey on June 29, 1974, in Rock Island. Mrs. Willey worked in the File Maintenance Department at Kroger Grocery Corporation until her retirement in 2001.

Survivors include her husband, Bennett Willey of Wharton; daughters, Lisa Willey of Wharton and Erin Allen of Arlington; grandchildren, Benjamin Willey, Kayla Allen and Jeffery Allen; sister, Diane Keig of Rock Island; brothers, Jim Forslund of Rapids City, Ill., and Gary Forslund of Franklin, Tenn.

Mrs. Willey was preceded in death by a daughter, Kristen Willey, on Jan. 14, 1979.

Raymond Dickson Carroll

Funeral services for Raymond Dickson “R.D.” Gary Carroll, 78, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Gordon Bergstrom officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Friends may call for visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Carroll died June 26, 2006, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born on Oct. 17, 1927, in Wharton, the daughter of the late J. Brooks Gary and Mildred Mae Fry Gary.

Mrs. Carroll has been a resident of Wharton and Boling all of her life. She married Gene Carroll on June 2, 1952, in Richmond and he preceded her in death on May 18, 1991. Mrs. Carroll was also preceded in death by a sister Ada Cargile and a brother J.B. Gary. She was active in local retail sales from 1957 until her retirement in 1991. Mrs. Carroll was a graduate of Oldfields High School in Maryland and attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Mrs. Carroll was Episcopalian by faith.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Donnie and Evelyn Carroll and Taylor and Enola Carroll, all of Wharton; brother, E.F. Gary, of Boling. Four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.

In lieu of the usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Hospice Support, Inc., P.O. Box 1417, El Campo, TX 77437.

Prince McCann

Funeral services for Dr. Prince McCann, 63, were held Monday at Mount Gilead Baptist Church with Rev. Royal Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Mount Gilead Cemetery in Egypt.

Dr. McCann died June 19, 2006, after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 19, 1934, in Wharton, to Vachel and Addie Glass McCann.

He was the sixth of nine children and graduated from T.L. Pink High School in 1951 in Glen Flora. Dr. McCann went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Prairie View A&M College in 1956 and then served two years in the U.S. Army where he was a first lieutenant. After his service he returned to Prairie View A&M College and received his master’s degree while teaching science and microbiology classes. Dr. McCann was conferred a doctorate in zoology and animal psychology from Howard University in 1970. He began his tenured teaching career in 1969 at Coppin State University in Baltimore, Md., where he remained 37 years.

Survivors include children, Denise Cook of Chicago, Ill., and Brent McCann and wife, Sonya, of Houston; six grandchildren; seven sisters, Christine Martin of Crockett, Serelia Sanford and Rose Hall, both of Egypt, Marion Hunt and husband W.J. of Lewisville, Angie Grace of Gatesville, Joyce Coleman and husband Robert of Seattle, Wash., and Jessie Glasco of Los Angeles, Calif.; and brother, Paul McCann and his wife, Patricia, of Houston.

Stella Boatwright

Stella Boatwright, age 93, of Glen Flora died Tuesday, June 20, at her residence following a brief illness. She was born on May 8, 1913 in Chappell Hill, a daughter of the late Steve Flisowski and Josephine Kubecka Flisowski.

Mrs. Boatwright had been a resident of Glen Flora since 1945 and was Catholic by faith. She married Louis Charles Boatwright on June 6, 1935, in Brazoria County and he preceded her in death on July 6, 1973. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Lee Boatwright; brothers, Willie, Wallis and Steven Flisowski; and sisters, Mary Urban and Martha Flisowski.

She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother and homemaker.

A Rosary was recited Thursday evening, June 22, 2006, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. A Funeral Mass was held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 23, 2006, at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Flossie and James Blair; sons and daughters-in-law, Edmund and Mary Evelyn Boatwright and L. C. and Mary Frances Boatwright, all of Glen Flora; grandchildren, Vicky Quijas, Cindy Cerny, Bubba Blair, Doree Kieborz, Darlene Gonzales, Donna Brown and Charlie Boatwright. Fifteen great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Pallbearers were Kenny “Bubba” Blair, Charlie Boatwright, Cody Boatwright, John Brown, Al Cerny, Blair Cerny, Ronnie Gonzales and David Kieborz.
Honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Ave., Wharton, TX 77488; or The American Cancer Society, 204 Second St., Wharton, TX 77488.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Prince McCann

Funeral services for Dr. Prince McCann, 71, of Washington, D.C., will be at 11 a.m. at Mount Gilead Baptist Church in Egypt.

Eugene Beyer
Eugene Daniel Beyer, 75, passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2006 in East Bernard. Burial services were held on Monday, June 19, 2006, with Rev. Michael Holcomb officiating. Burial was at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park in New Braunfels.

Mr. Beyer was born on Feb. 18, 1931, in Fentress. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in East Bernard.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores “Dee”; five children and their spouses: Gary and Caroline Beyer of Austin; Randy and Trisha Beyer of Dripping Springs; Debbie and David Yeager of Brenham; Dale and Cathy Pitts of San Antonio; Scott and Mary Pitts of East Bernard. Grandchildren are: Nathan Beyer, Ben Beyer, Alex Beyer, Mason Beyer, Jenna Beyer, David Yeager, Amanda Yeager, Bethany Yeager, Erik Yeager, Aaren Pitts, Patrick Pitts, Tricia Maynard and James Maynard. Also surviving are two brothers and their spouses: Pete and Margie Beyer of Prairie Lea and Roy and Sallie Beyer of Victoria. There are three surviving sisters-in-law: Vera Beyer, Maxine Beyer and Elfrieda Beyer; and many surviving nieces and nephews.
Mr. Beyer was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Beyer and Adolph Beyer; and brothers, Edgar Beyer, Helmuth “Moody” Beyer, Sidney Beyer, Harry Beyer, Adolph Beyer and John Beyer; and one sister, Irma Bielke.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 25, 2006 at First United Methodist Church in East Bernard at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice A-Med Healthcare Group, 3535 Briarpark Drive Suite 220, Houston, TX 77042; or ALS Association, 27001 Agoura Road, Suit 150, Calabasas, Ca 91301-9801.

James Wright

James “Snooks” Wright Jr., age 88, of East Bernard, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2006, at his home in East Bernard. He was born on July 11, 1917, in Harrisburg, now Houston, the son of James Sr. and Emma Josephine Martin Wright.

He graduated from East Bernard High School in 1935 and began working as an automobile mechanic at Union Motor Company. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in November of 1941 and served in all three theaters of battle until honorably discharged in January of 1946. On Jan. 24, 1946, he married Ella Mae Grantham in Luling.

He was the loving father of Jo Ann Wright Shaver Vasina and grandfather of Donna Shaver and Daniel and Elizabeth Shaver, and great-grandfather of Micheal Thomas Shaver.

Mr. Wright worked as an automobile mechanic at Union Motor Company, now Ellison Chevrolet, in East Bernard for more than 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife; father and mother; brothers, Martin and Calvin Wright; sisters, Delphia King, Dicey and Jessie Wright; and son-in-law, Michael J. Shaver.

He loved watching any kind of sport and building or fixing anything mechanical.
Services were held at First United Methodist Church in East Bernard. Burial was in First United Methodist Church Cemetery in East Bernard.

Charles Gilbreath

Graveside services for Charles William “Charlie” Gilbreath, 93, of Victoria, formerly of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Gilbreath died June 30, 2006, at a Hallettsville nursing home following a lengthy illness. He was born on Aug. 5, 1912, in Bell County, son of the late Charles William Gilbreath Sr. and Candace Coddle Gilbreath.

He was a retired cotton farmer in Wharton County and heavy equipment operator loading and unloading large transport ships at the Houston Ship Channel in Houston. He started working at the age of 9 or 10 years as a water boy for the construction crew building the Old Spanish Trail Street, which was one of the first major thoroughfares completed in Houston. Mr. Gilbreath helped establish and build the First Baptist Church in the farming community of Magnet. He also helped build the Little League and Junior League Baseball fields in Wharton.

Survivors include his sons, Charles Wayne Gilbreath and wife, Pamela of Holly Springs, N.C., Ronnie Daryl Gilbreath and wife, Linda, of Victoria; daughter, Nanda Lynn Sheradin of Brodheadsville, Pa.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one half-brother, Earl Gilbreath.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife of 51 years, O’Dell Estelene Thomas Gilbreath; four brothers and five sisters.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Hospice of South Texas, 404 N. Texana, Hallettsville, TX 77964; or the American Cancer Society, 204 Second Street, Wharton, TX 77488.
