Ellie Kirby

Ellie Kirby, 82, passed away on June 30, 2006, in Wichita Falls. The family was at Lunn’s Colonial Funeral Home for visitation Sunday evening from 6 to 7 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at Rest Haven Funeral Home in Rowlett with Pastor Jason McConnell officiating. Burial will be in Mills Cemetery in Rowlett.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn’s Colonial Funeral Home and Rest Haven Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kirby was born Aug. 19, 1923, to Charles and Merle Man Morgan in Dallas. She married Milton J. Kirby Sr. on Sept. 1, 1983, in Ruidoso, N.M. Ellie was very loving toward her family but she had a special love for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ellie was an expert bridge player and she loved to travel. She enjoyed sports and was an avid Texas Longhorns Fan.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, William and John Morgan; and by a sister, Louisa Belle Mehaffey.

Mrs. Kirby is survived by her husband, Milton J. Kirby Sr. of Wichita Falls; three children, Billy Settles of Victoria, Merle Hughes of Wharton and Robby Settles of Santa Clarita, Calif.; a brother, W.B. Morgan of Houston; a step-son, Milton J. Kirby Jr. of Wichita Falls; 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, and numerous nieces nephews and in-laws.

Marjorie Mays

Marjorie Ann Pearson Mays was born on May 9, 1912, in Sugar Valley to Charles Woody and Elsie May Pearson. She attended school at Burr and Wharton and graduated from Southwestern Texas State Teachers College. Mrs. Mays taught school in Burr prior to marrying Jones Allen Mays Jr. of Wharton in 1933.

They were longtime residents of Rosenberg. After a short period in Pecos, they retired in Alvin. Marjorie also taught school in Orchard and Rosenberg. Mrs. Mays was active in the Order of the Eastern Star and the Alvin Library Society. Her hobby in later years was the card game of bridge, which she played until the age of 92. She was residing at Summerville Retirement Home in Friendswood at her death on July 2, 2006, at age 94.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Wilma Pearson Guess of Rosenberg; her brother, Charles Russell Pearson of Lago; and her husband of 61 years, Jones Allen Mays Jr.
Mrs. Mays is survived by her daughter, Sally Jean Mays of Alvin; and son, William A. Mays; and wife, Doris of Lake Jackson. She is also survived by the following grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Randy Reed and wife Cindy and two children of West Columbia; Rhett Reed and wife Theresa and two children of Austin; Robbe Sebesta and husband Paul and four children of Angleton; Tim Mays and wife Lisa and three children of Richmond; and Susan Hairston and husband Joe and three children of Lake Jackson.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, July 4, 2006, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home in Friendswood. A family graveside service will be held at the Wharton City Cemetery on July 5, 2006, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Paul Quiggins officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that any gifts be sent to the First United Methodist Church in Alvin, Texas, or given to one’s local church.

Natalie Cruz - Polanco

Graveside services for Natalie Jean Cruz - Polanco, infant daughter of David Robert Polanco Jr. and Christina Maria Cruz were held Friday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating.

Natalie died June 25, 2006 in a Wharton hospital.
Survivors include her parents; grandparents, Gary Wayne Terry of San Leon, David Robert Polanco Sr. of Galveston and Mary Cruz of Wharton; great-grandparents, Josephine F. Rodriguez of Dallas and Doris Polanco of Galveston.

Landon Machann

Landon Ennis “Red” Machann, 67, of Wharton died July 9, 2006, in a Houston hospital following a sudden illness.

Following cremation, memorial services will be held at a later date. In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Van Ministry, 207 Bob-O-Link, Wharton, TX 77488.

Dexter Hodge

Graveside Services for Dexter Lawrence Hodge of Bryan, are set for 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Restever Memorial Park with Dr. Tim Owens officiating. Visitation will be held from 11a.m. to noon Saturday at Hillier Funeral Home.

Mr. Hodge was born May 11, 1917, at Pledger in Matagorda County, and passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2006. He was the son of the late Oliver Jefferson Hodge Jr. and Willie Louise Harrison Hodge.
He is also preceded in death by two brothers Oliver Lloyd Hodge, Robert Jefferson Hodge Sr. and two sisters Mary Eleise Shaw and Laura Ellen Hodge.
Survivors include his wife Mertie “Jo” Hodge; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dexter Hodge, Jr. and wife Dianne of Pattison and Jeff Hodge and wife Sandi of Kurten; three grandsons, Philip Dexter Hodge, Andrew Lawrence Hodge and Stephen Jeffrey Hodge.

Mr. Hodge served in the United States Army and Air Force from 1940 to 1962, retiring from the USAF as a colonel with more than 22 years active service. During World War II his combat decorations included the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaves. His B-24 Squadron, which he commanded as a captain and later as a major, was awarded two citations. First for the Air Battle of Kiel, and second for the Air Battle of Ploesti. Non-combatant awards included the Army and Air Force Commendations Medals. Among his many duty station assignments was Texas A&M in 1946 to 1949 as its Professor of Air Science and Tactics, which was activated upon his arrival.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bryan. He was a 50-year member of: Bay City Lodge No. 865 AF&AM; Bryan Chapter No. 222 Order of the Eastern Star; the Tampa, Fla., Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, S.J. USA, and many veterans organizations including the 44th Bomb Group Veterans Association, and 2nd Air Division Association that represent his WW II combat organizations that has been de-activated.

After retirement from the USAF in 1962, Mr. Hodge lived in Pledger, Matagora County, until 1986. During this period he served various terms as a member of the following agencies: County Hospital District; County Conservation and Reclamation District No. 1; County Soil Conservation District No. 316; County Re-districting Committee; Boling School District Property Tax Re-appraisal Board; and Community 4-H Leader. He made Bryan his home since 1986. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and active with Disabled American Vets.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund or a charity of personal choice.

Hetty Jefferson

Memorial services for Hetty Mae Jefferson, 68, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness.

Blas Barrera

Blas Moreno Barrera Sr., age 76, of Boling, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2006, in his home. He was born on May 19, 1930, in Old Gulf, son of the late Jesse Barrera and Aurora Moreno.

Mr. Barrera was a former long time resident of New Gulf before moving to Boling. He married Hermina Garza on Aug. 14, 1950, she preceded him in death on July 21, 1995. Mr. Barrera worked for Texas Gulf as a field technician. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Boling. He enjoyed fishing, barbecuing with friends and family.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with a rosary starting at 7 p.m. Funeral mass services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, July 20, 2006, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
Survivors include his sons, Blas Barrera Jr. and wife, Sharon, of Boling, Jesse Barrera and wife, Susie, of Rosenberg, Raymundo Barrera of Boling, Rodrigo Barrera and wife, Sylvia, of Clute, Ruben Barrera of Boling, and Edward Barrera of Boling; daughter, Rosario Barrera Hernandez of Boling; grandchildren, Blas III, Zachery, Brandon, Jesse Jr., Abel, Rod Jr., Bryan, Nick, Stephanie, Lori, Brittany, Edward Jr., Celeste Barrera and Michael Trevino; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Jesse III, and Joshua; siblings, Raul Barrera and wife, Lois, Alice Garza and husband, Gilbert, Yolanda Campos, sisters-in-law, Olga Jones and Victoria Holt; brother-in-law, Jose Trevino and wife, Faye; close cousins, Mary Rodriguez and Carol Driscoll; and a special friend, Josephine Becerra.

Mr. Barrera was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and daughter-in-law, Linda Barrera.
Pallbearers are Blas Barrera Jr., Jesse Barrera Sr., Rodrigo Barrera Sr., Ruben Barrera, Edward Barrera and Jesse Barrera Jr.

Honorary pallbearers were Raymundo and Abel Barrera.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Lillian Brandes

Lillian Marie Brandes, age 91, of East Bernard died Monday, July 17, 2006, in Crosby. She was born on May 17, 1915, in Tavener, daughter of the late Arthur Albert and Emma Woltersdorf Bremser.
Mrs. Brandes was a lifelong resident of East Bernard and a 1932 graduate of Boling High School. She married Raymond L. Brandes on Feb. 1, 1935, in East Bernard. He preceded her in death on March 17, 1972. Mrs. Brandes was an accomplished seamstress, who loved to sew for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a former Cub Scout Leader and Home Demonstration member.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday,
July 19, 2006, at Wharton Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael G. Holcomb officiating. Interment will follow in the East Bernard Methodist Cemetery. Friends may call for visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2006, and 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, at Wharton Funeral Home.

Survivors include her daughters, Shirley Thomas and husband, Dan A. of Crosby, and Flossy Forgason and husband, Richard, of Hungerford; son, Bubba Brandes and wife, Doris, of East Bernard; grandchildren, Dana Lundgren and husband, Lance, Dan B. Thomas and wife, Felicia, Tamara Herbert and huband, Page, Lana Jo Stanley and husband, Bill, Lex Forgason and wife, Stacey, Wes Brandes and Rocky Brandes. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Hilda Preisler, Elsie Preisler and Gertrude Brandes and by brothers, Eric, Fred, Albert and Walter Bremser.
Her life is celebrated with loving memories of her giving and caring.

Pallbearers are Rocky Brandes, Wes Brandes, Lex Forgason, Page Herbert, Lance Lundgren, Chip Shelton, Bill Stanley and Dan B. Thomas.

If desiring, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 421 Pietzch St., East Bernard, TX 77435; or to a charity of personal choice.

Landon Machann

Following cremation, memorial services for Landon Ennis “Red” Machann, 67, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with Rev. Lance Ousley officiating.

Mr. Machann died July 9, 2006 in a Houston hospital following a sudden illness. He was born on April 15, 1939 in Houston.

He was a lifelong resident of Wharton and was Episcopal by faith. He worked as a postal clerk in the Wharton Post Office for 38 years until his retirement in 1999. Mr. Machann served in the U.S. Army from 1958 until 1961. He served as the van driver for St. Thomas Episcopal Church where he drove children to and from Calvary Episcopal Church School in Richmond.

Survivors include his son, Robert Machann of Kingwood; sisters, Mary Ann Jones of New Braunfels and Clara Jean Machann of Katy; brother, Edward Machann Jr. of Huffman; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Joseph Breaux

Joseph Percy Breaux, 77, of Wharton, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, in a Houston hospital following a brief illness. He was born on Oct. 24, 1928, in Crowley, La., the son of the late Delmas Breaux and Evella Hebert Breaux.

Mr. Breaux and his late wife, Inez T. Arceneaux Breaux, were residents of Wharton since 1978. He was preceded in death by Mrs. Inez Breaux who died on Jan. 28, 2001. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Leonard Breaux; one grandson, David Breaux; and a former wife, Mildred Sittig. Mr. Breaux served in the National Guard and was placed on active duty in the U.S. Army when the Korean War started. He served with Btry. C, 187 FA Observation Battalion. Mr. Breaux served 13 months on the front lines in the Korean War, rising to the rank of staff sergeant and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and several other medals. He received an Honorable Discharge, Sept. 10, 1952. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton and was a very close friend of the late Rev. Joe Koebel. Mr. Breaux had worked for Barbins Novelty Company in Crowley, La., for Keton Novelty Company in Wharton, and Lone Star Cleaners, part-time until his death. He enjoyed cooking, woodworking, putting together vintage model cars and trucks, working with electronics and fishing. He enjoyed family, home, and Cajun music.

A Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. A Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Roger Hawes officiating. Graveside services followed at the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton.

Survivors include one son, Richard Breaux of Iota, La; daughters, Bonnie Fergerson of Houston, Mona Woodward of Moss Bluff, La., Monora “Cookie” Broussard of Iowa, La.; step-daughters, Mylinda Foreman of Kaplan, La., and Shelby Thibodeaux of Rayne, La.; steps-sons, Shelton Terro of New Iberia, La., and Timothy Terro of Rayne, La.; grandchildren, Ricky Breaux, Tommy Breaux, Josh Breaux, Terri Middleton, Trisha Seagler, Micah Woodward, Rachel Bourque, Jennifer Woodward, Michael Broussard, Grady Broussard and Crystal Broussard; seven great-grandchildren, 15 step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Donald Foreman, Tommy Breaux, David Cormier, Doug Middleton, Lupe Castillo and Bill Ansley.

Honorary pallbearers were Frank Heikamp, John Heikamp, Tres Ansley, Joel Ansley, Micah Woodward, Michael Gomez Sr., Michael Gomez II, John Price Sr., J.J. Price and all of his fellow co-workers at Lone Star Cleaners and his many friends and neighbors.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 15186, Austin, TX 78761.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home, 515 Boling Hwy., Wharton, TX 77488.

Ernest Brown
Ernest Doyle Brown Sr., age 85, of Lane City, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, in a Houston hospital. He was born on May 23, 1921, in Bastrop, son of the late John Homer and Susie Colander Bush Brown.
Mr. Brown was a longtime resident of Wharton. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army until his honorable discharge. Mr. Brown was awarded the American Defense Ribbon, the American Theatre Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon. He married Ethel Evelyn Morris on Sept. 12, 1947, in Bartlett. She preceded him in death on Aug. 20, 1985. Mr. Brown worked for Cochran Motor Company in Wharton as a mechanic for many years. He enjoyed spending time raising his cattle, chickens, and hunting with his grandchildren, and loved to mow the lawn.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006, at Wharton Funeral Home with Brother Kenny James officiating. Interment and military graveside services followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery under the auspices of the Wharton American Legion.

Survivors include his children, Ernest Doyle Brown Jr. of Florida, Roy Anthony Brown of Pasadena, Judy Brown Jeffries and husband, Jeff, of Old Ocean, Bobby Ray Brown and wife, Shelly, of Wharton, Ricky Lynn Brown and wife, Jeanette, of Pledger, Earl Gene Brown and wife, Teresa, of Wharton, Pamela Ferguson and Steve Ward of Cleveland, and John Christopher Brown of Houston; sister, Julia Howell of Rosenberg; brother, R.L. Brown of Kosse; 28 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren with three on the way and two great-great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews and many friends also survive.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Brown was preceded in death by son, Tommy Wayne Brown and grandchildren, Jason Doyle Jeffries, Thomas Wayne Brown and Amanda Kay Huffman.

Pallbearers were Bryan Brown, Allen Jeffries, James Jeffries, Justin Jeffries, Franklin Brown, Jay Stell, Todd Brown and Ricky Huffmann.
Honorary pallbearer was Eric Alonso.
