William Cox

William Jack Cox, age 74, of Boling, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical following an extended illness. He was born June 28, 1928, in Smithville, the son of the late George Milton Cox and Sally Elizabeth Blair Cox.

Mr. Cox had been a resident of the Boling/Newgulf area since 1958 and was a member of the Community Assembly of God Church in Needville. He was the principal of Newgulf Elementary School beginning in 1965 until his retirement in June 1986. Mr. Cox married Betty Jo Elledge on March 7, 1953, in South Houston. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of American Legion Post No. 87 in Wharton where he held various offices. Mr. Cox was also a member of the Wharton County Retired Teachers Association. He was preceded in death by an infant son, William Stephen Cox, in 1956.

Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with the Rev. Stan Rule officiating. Graveside services and burial were held at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon at Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Franklin.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo Cox of Boling; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Nancy Cox of Wharton and Mark and Cheryl Cox of Groesbeck; brother, George Cox of Friendswood; grandchildren, Elisabeth Erin East and Sarah Elaine Cox.

Pallbearers were Ray Stapleton, Robert Fogel, Lonnie Mrazek, Ray Hobbs, Pete Kucera, Richard Hood, Jeff Garrett and Jack Cox.

Honorary pallbearers were the members of American Legion Post No. 87.

In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorials to the Jack Cox Memorial Scholarship Fund, Kenneth Cox, 1917 Chapel Heights, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Dorothy Hargrove

Funeral services for Dorothy Baylor Hargrove, 59, of El Campo, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Bible Truth Pentecostal Church with Pastor K.W. Baylor officiating. Burial will follow in El Campo Community Cemetery.

Mrs. Hargrove died Jan. 27, 2003, at El Campo Memorial Hospital. She was born June 23, 1943, in El Campo to Jim Baylor and Melissa Whipper.

She was a lifelong resident of El Campo and worked as a nurse. Mrs. Hargrove was Baptist by faith.
Survivors include daughter, Mary Laverne Bryant; sons, Alvin Baylor and Wayne Hargrove; sisters, Veola Perkins and Leona Lee; brothers, Ernest Baylor and Leo Baylor; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

La Tonya Roberson

Funeral services for La Tonya Ray Roberson, 30, of Austin, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Little Zion Jerusalem Baptist Church with Rev. C. Drayden officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Mrs. Roberson died Jan. 30, 2003, at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple. She was born Sept. 4, 1972, in Wharton to Willie and Sarah Ray.

Survivors include grandfathers, Rufus White of Temple and Dave Armstrong of Kendleton; grandmothers, Louise Richardson and Irene Ray, both of Wharton; parents, Willie and Sarah Ray of Wharton; husband, Johnnie Roberson of Austin; daughters, Antonia Ray and Karishaun Bell, both of Austin; brothers, Patrick Williams and Kelly Grundy Jr., both of Houston, and Deshadreal Hill of Wharton; sisters, Caroline Clark of Austin, Earlisha Hayes and Keidri Ford, both of Wharton.

Joel Svatek

Funeral services for Joel Scott Svatek, 33, of Austin, were held Friday at Peel & Sons Funeral Home in Austin.

Mr. Svatek died Jan. 27, 2003, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born Nov. 25, 1969.

Survivors include mother, Katherine Ward of Dallas; father and step-mother, Dennis and Joyce Svatek of Boling; brothers and sister-in-law, Dennis and Marcy Svatek Jr. of Taylor and Dustin Svatek of Dallas; half-sisters, Christy and Melissa Svatek of Wharton; niece Courtney Svatek of Taylor; and nephew Stephen Svatek of Taylor; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in the Wharton area and numerous friends in Austin.

If desiring, memorials may be made to a charity of personal choice.

Robert Wilkes

Deacon Robert Wilkes, 90, of Wharton, went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 29, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. His homecoming celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at St. Stephen’s Missionary Baptist Church, 1213 Bailey St. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Feb., 2, at St. Stephen’s Missionary Baptist Church.

Mr. Wilkes was born to the union of Wash and Emoline Lamb in Yazoo City, Miss., on Jan. 23, 1913. The Lord saw fit to call his mother home shortly after Robert was three hours old. He was then adopted by Robert and Eliza Wilkes, his mother’s oldest brother and his wife. Mr. Wilkes’ family moved to Sherrill, Ark., when he was six years old. There he attended public school. At age 14 he became united with St. Luke Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. J.W. McCrary.

He later joined the First Baptist Church of Pine Bluff, Ark., where Rev. Stevenson was pastor. When the family at last moved to Moscow, Ark., he met and married the lovely Janet M. Allen. He and his wife united with the Belmont Baptist Church where Rev. Nelson was pastor. It was there he was ordained as a deacon at the age of 24 and served until he moved to Chicago, Ill., to be among his sisters and brothers. He and his family became members of the Shiloh Baptist Church, where Rev. C.C. Anderson served as pastor.

In 1947, Deacon Wilkes moved his family to Wharton, where they became members of St. James Baptist Church with Rev. J.J. Dickson as pastor. For many years he served as an officer of the Deacon Board, president of the Usher Board, founder of the Beautification Club and director of the Baptist Training Union. He and his wife served the Lord and taught their children by precepts and examples.

When the time came for him to serve among other members of the Wharton community, he and his wife choose to move their membership to the St. Stephen’s Missionary Baptist Church when Rev. M. L. Harris was pastor. The church has most recently been pastored by the late Rev. John R. Mack. Here, Deacon Wilkes received many honors. Among these honors was a proclamation from the Honorable Joel Williams, mayor of the City of Wharton, which officially named the Fellowship Hall at St. Stephen’s in his honor, The Robert Wilkes Fellowship Hall, and the naming of a street in his honor. He resided at 417 Wilkes St. near where Martin Luther King Boulevard and Wilkes Street nearly intersect. Deacon Wilkes has received various awards and accolades throughout his lifetime. We have been honored to have him in our midst.

He leaves to celebrate his home going, his wife of 66 years, Janet Wilkes; his 10 children and their spouses: the late Ora Lee Reed; Elder Robert Lams and wife Oretta, Altha Morris and her husband Isaac, a deacon; Barbara Carrington and her husband Derrel, a deacon; Virginia Ford and her husband Alfred, an elder; Rev. James and Dorothy Wilkes; Major Wilkes and his late wife Doris; John and Melda Wilkes; the late Robert Wilkes and his surviving wife Peggy; and Doris Turner and her husband Rev. George Turner; 34 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, numerous nephews, nieces and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home.

Zacaris Diaz

Funeral services for Zacaris Diaz, Sr., 56, of Damon, were held Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Bryan Heyer officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A Rosary was recited Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Diaz died Sept. 3, 2007 in a Lake Jackson hospital following an extended illness. He was born on Nov. 5, 1950 in Bonus, the son of the late Norberto Diaz and Antonia Garcia Diaz.

He had been a resident of Damon for the past 30 years and was a construction laborer. Mr. Diaz married Teodora Hernandez on Sept. 16, 1968 in Wharton and she preceded him in death on June 23, 2006. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Rosenberg.

Survivors include daughters, Sandy Diaz of Wharton, Regina Diaz of South Carolina and Francis Zambrano of Brazoria; son, Zacaris Diaz Jr. of Damon; sisters, Patricia Wheat of Talihina, Okla., Lola Diaz of Raymondville, Maria Gasca of Minnesota; brothers, Rosindo Diaz of Needville, Juan Diaz of Richmond, Antonio Muniez of Boling, William Diaz of Sugar Land and Frank Diaz of Florida; three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Ave., Wharton, TX 77488.

Jim Matthews

Funeral services for Jim Ida Matthews, 76, of Wharton, were held Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Mario Perez officiating. Cremation followed the funeral service.
Mrs. Matthews died August 27, 2007 in a Sugar Land hospital following an extended illness. She was born on July 13, 1931 in Hot Springs, Ark., the daughter of the late David C. Bradley and Jewel McKinney Bradley.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, The Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and belonged to the Wharton County Home Extension Club. She married Russell Bennett Matthews on May 9, 1969 in Germany.

She was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

Survivors include her husband; Russell Matthews of Wharton; daughters, Susie and husband David Elliott and Deborah Carter, all of Katy; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Clarence Sabrsula

Funeral service for Clarence Roy Sabrsula, 76, of Rosenberg, will be held at 10 a.m., today, Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007 at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg with Chaplain Phil Parks officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Rosenberg.

Visitation was held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, 2007 in the State Room of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg.

Mr. Sabrsula was born Nov. 5, 1930 in Needville to Zefrin Sabrsula and Agnes Wleczyk Sabrsula. He passed away Aug. 29, 2007 in Rosenberg.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army and was a member of the American Legion.
He was also a member of the National Rifle Association.

Mr. Sabrsula is preceded in death by his parents, Zefrin and Agnes Sabrsula; and brothers, Lambert Sabrsula and Marvin Sabrsula.

He is survived by sons, David Earl Sabrsula and companion, Barbara Yvonne Kay, of Bay City and Cecil Lee Sabrsula of Wharton; daughter, Linda Carol Fisk and husband, Weldon, of Richmond; grandchildren, Victoria Sabrsula Russell, Rachael Sabrsula-Dickenson, Lisa Ann Fisk and Brian Lewis Fisk; great-grandchild, Alyx Marie Fisk; along with other relatives and many friends.
For those wishing, memorial donations may be made in memory of Mr. Sabrsula to the American Heart Association, 10060 Buffalo Speedway, Houston, TX 77054; or the American Lung Association, Houston & Southeast Region, 2030 N. Loop West, Suite 250, Houston, Tx 77018.

Burris Williams

Funeral services for Burris Williams, 72, of El Campo, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at New Hope Community Church. Burial will follow in the El Campo Community Cemetery.

Mr. Williams died Aug. 26, 2007 at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

He was born Feb. 7, 1935 in Garwood to the late Alenia Person and Robert L. Williams Sr.

He was a retire heavy equipment operator.

Survivors include wife, Betty Joyce Mims; daughters and sons-in-law, Lillie Jewel and James Revis, Gwendolyn B. Gray, Sharlotte and Gary Siggers and Ivory and Don Edwards; sons, Russell Williams and Phillip Anthony Williams; brother and sister-in-law, Robert Lee and Ella Mae Williams Jr.; sister, Vivian Bryant; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Edwards

Funeral services for Dorothy Baines Edwards, 51, of Wharton will be held at noon today, Wednesday, at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. B.B. Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Edwards died Dec. 6, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born March 12, 1951, in Wharton to A.J. Jones and Willie C. Baines.

Survivors include mother, Willie C. Baines of Wharton; husband, Curtis Edwards of Wharton; daughters, Necole Bosier of Fort Worth and Natalie Edwards of Huntsville; brothers, Rev.Vernon Baines of Dickinson, Rev. EIvin Baines of New York, N.Y., Rev. Theodore Baines of Kendleton and Rev. Terman Baines of Sugar Land; sisters, Lorene Byars of Wharton, Jerlean Black, Linda Lawson, both of Houston, Alice Autrey of Richmond, Willie J. King of Kendleton and Cheryl Green of Wharton; and two grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Clara Vesely

Clara Zbranek Kalmus Vesely, age 92, of Wharton, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, in Wharton. She was born on June 25, 1910, in Ellinger, the daughter of the late Paul and Emilia Zbranek.

Mrs. Vesely was a homemaker and worked in food services for many years while living in Victoria before her retirement in the early 1980s. She lived in Victoria from 1958 until 1984 when she returned to Wharton. Mrs. Vesely was a former member of St. Mary’s Church in Victoria and a current member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. She loved gardening, baking and taking care of her many house plants.

Funeral mass was held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Raymond Jackson officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held at 12:30 p.m. prior to the mass.

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Eline Kalmus Pekar of Lake Jackson and Delores and Norman Hanke of Cuero; sons and daughters-in-law, Lawrence and Zanelle Kalmus of Lake Cherokee and Jimmy and Gussie Kalmus of Rosenberg; grandchildren, Freddie Pekar, Gary Pekar, Douglas Pekar, Theresa Pekar, Debra Pekar, Joey Kalmus, Kevin Kalmus, Michael Kalmus, Lisa Kalmus Smith, Darlene Hanke Jordan and Karen Hanke Ramirez and 12 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were her grandsons.
